If Samsung hadn't discontinued their professional camera line, they could have outshined everyone. They were introducing groundbreaking ideas that outpaced the competition, but then they abruptly halted. It felt like they stopped because the market was too simple to tackle. The Samsung Galaxy NX camera and NX1 were both revolutionary during their time. They could easily revive the Samsung Galaxy NX camera, making it even better. Simply updating the software and incorporating a new UI would make it a hit on the internet.
It was doomed from the start, their business plan was slapdash and pretty flawed. They started from scratch, their R&D cost was too high and they were always having to play catch-up. They also didn't have any experience or expertise in the other parts of the camera (such as autofocus, colour science, etc.) and pursued partnerships rather than acquiring the companies to vertically integrate their supply chain. T E.g. their main partner early on was Pentax, and you had co-developed pro level cameras which were internally identical, with minor external differences and different branding. This meant that people bought the Pentax (which was an extablished brand) over the Samsung. Piggybacking of Pentax also meant that early Samsung cameras using the Pentax mount did not have compatibility with lenses of later proprietary models, which is also a massive turn-off. They ended up competing with these partners who had more cachet in the camera space. This also meant when they went complete independent in the 2010s they had massive skill and expertise gaps which their competition did not have. Basically they did everything opposite to Sony in the Mirrorless space and failed where Sony succeeded. Sony bought Minolta and integrated decades of specialist expertise and experience. This meant that when they "mainstreamed" Mirrorless tech, their products were much more polished and complete compared to Samsung. E.g. both companies' first major full frame mirrorless - launched at about the same time - The Nx1 on paper had better specs than the A7, but in practice was much less polished and showed the lack of experience working with professional camera kit: the autofocus was unreliable, the manual focus wasn't intuitive and awkward to use. The biggest issue IMHO was that Samsung didn't have a lot of experience making lenses which led to much poorer quality pictures despite the superior sensor. Were these issues Samsung could have solved? Probably if they threw enough money at it. But given that the camera department was haemorrhaging money and at the same time their mobile sales were through the roof, they probably made the right choice in killing the NX.
The Samsung NX series should have stayed alive a lot longer than it was, it was a shame that they dumped the entire camera division for no apparent reason. And for us people who invested in the NX series, we were left out in the wind with no information why.
The reason for dumping the camera division most likely was that they never got a decent market share. Not that surprising since the cameras was OK, but not outstanding compared to other established brands. The exception was the NX1 which was excellent but never got the chance to be a huge seller as it came out just before Samsung gave up on the camera business. Maybe they did the right thing as the digital camera market collapsed around that time.
I have the NX200 with the kit lens and a 20mm pancake. I find it's well made and an easy logical menu. I'd say hang on to any you might have as any day now TH-cam will discover that these APSC cameras are actually good value for money, followed by prices on eBay reflecting this!😂
I have one and it is a blast to use among friends and family. Incredible for black and white photos and highly pocketable. I also have the Samsung nx 2000, incredible camera. Samsung nx line should have more popularity, i guess they focused on smartphones over cameras
I've wanted one for a while. My favorite camera is my Samsung NX3000. I use it pretty regularly, got it in 2017. I've tried to get an NX Mini for a long time, they used to go for only about $100-150 but was never able to justify it. Nowadays I can't even justify it since camera reviews shot the price up 5x (dang it, MarkusPix...). The trick is not using Samsung's first party lenses though. Maybe the 30mm. The 16mm 2.4 prime isn't too great. It's great for vintage lenses though, the Mini should be excellent for C-mount lenses too.
I believe in around 2013 Sony released their Sony RX1, full frame compact mirrorless with 35mm fixed lens, it was so small you could easily put in a pocket or so sadly they abandoned that line, imagine this today but with like 28mm lens and their new 61mp sensor
Come on, RX1 is huge and in no way easily pocketable and it is expensive as hell. It is 480 grams and has the depth of 7 cm. I do not get people who think bigger is always even when one needs a small camera.
the rx1 definitely gained some traction again during the pandemic as folks were digging through their old gear. albeit small, the rx1 is definitely not pocketable but is by far the most compact full frame sensor camera you can purchase today for a decent-ish price.
Leica refined the concept and launched the Q - which is niche for sure, especially given the price, but within that niche it stands alone and sells like hotcakes (comparatively)
Thank you for this presentation. Is it possible to use this camera as a webcam to register conferences and courses throught Keynote to be broadcast on a TH-cam channel ?

I got that NX Mini in 2019 for about $150 US dollars, it's super uncommon but it's wonderful, the only cons are its tiny sensor and its lack of lenses. I don't remember if it has manual lenses or adapters out there. It was a point and shoot camera but with interchangeable lenses.
It sucks that they killed the division quietly, I hope they will return in the scene due to experience in making traditional cameras and computational photography. Samsung S and Z series are very competitive in the smartphone market by combining a traditional photography, it will simplify have capability to compete in camera industry, influencer media as a vlogging and vernacular scene
Imagine if they had made the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with this lens mount in the middle of the surface of the phone that currently has a plane metal look. Mirrorless flip phone camera!
There is a company trying to do this, idk what company it was but they changed the look of all their cameras to be circular to mimic the look but still a 3-4 camera standard. But the phone that has the sensor is I think $5k…. But it’s really cool, Mrwhosetheboss did a video on it. But I see an issue with how stable the lens will be since it doesn’t have a good way of mounting
I want to buy my first camera within a budget. So far ive only taken pixtures using my Samsung phone. I'm indecisive between this camera and the NX3000, any recommendations?
As a long time nx-mini owner, I absolutely adored this camera. I used it primarily for inventory photography at work taking around 1,700 to 2,200 photos a day. The contrast detect while slow was accurate and rarely let me down. The only real ussues I had were the low light performance and occasional software glitches that had me taking out the battery from time to time. However for a camera that actually fits in your pocket, I loved it. I have since sold my mini and upgraded to the lumix lx-10 as my pocket camera and the lumix s5 as my work horse, but the nx-mini will always hold a special place in my heart. Without that camera I wouldn't be doing photography for a living. It's also the only camera I've sold at a profit. Those little buggers hold their value

Samsung were ahead of their time , imagine what would have happen if they'd still make cameras , maybe we'd get decent smartphone tech in cameras or something.
I still have my Samsung NX Mini in Mint. I bought it around the time it was released and it was a good decision for sure! It's old but still works just fine! I bought it mostly for vlogging but it's great for when we need to fit a lot of people in the frame since it's a wide angle camera.
Samsung was ahead of its time with its camera technology for the time. I was sad when they discontinued their camera line. I still own 3 of their models, NX300, Galaxy 2, and WB2200.
One of my favourite things about Tom's videos is that there's always going to be one, and only one micropenis joke hidden somewhere, and it's getting really entertaining trying to predict when it's gonna happen
Canon’s EOS M line is similar in size, maybe slightly bigger by a few mm. I had the M200 and it was too small for my liking, no grip and awkward in the hand. Got the M6 to replace. Not as pocketable, but has a decent grip with an awesome retro rangefinder look to it and will remain as my compact travel camera. I can also adapt all my other canon EF lenses and use as a B cam if I need to as well
I have the NX Mini with all three lenses. I've actually thought seriously about selling it because I like manual controls and changing the aperture on the screen is a bit fiddly. Battery life is mind boggling good for a camera this size. But it is a fun camera. Smile or wink a d it will take a selfish. The two prime lenses are good but the zoom feels cheap. After watching your video I'm thinking about putting this camera back in the pocket.
I have two bodies and all lenses. I have sold already my NX300 and NX500 with all my NX lenses. NX mini has a special place in my heart especially 17mm f1.8 lens.

It’s my favorite camera! I have my NX-Mini with my 17mm lens. But for fun I have my NX-M adapter with a 85mm lens. It’s amazing what you get out of this little camera.
I like that idea. If made well not too thick and and still possible to game and watch vids holding it comfortably and have modern android on it it would be sweet. So I wouldn't mind them bringing it back but more modern. The old camera phone beats every smartphone.
Does anyone know how to open up these lenses for cleaning? My 17mm has dust inside and I really need someone who may know how to disassemble so I can clean then inside glass!!! Thanks to anyone and all
Funny you mention the Nikon 1 series in here. I actually bought a Nikon 1 V1 even AFTER reading about how horrible the series failed because of a few reasons. Got mine for dirt cheap, completely understood that most of the lenses for it are almost impossible to find in working conditions, was excited for the built-in EVF, was super small, and it actually uses the same batteries as my D810 I was already shooting with. It'll just be a permanently-adapted system, and I'm totally fine with that. I'll take the challenge when I can get a stellar price.
That's not true. Lenses can't create digital noise, only sensor gain does that, or editing afterwards. The ISO used for that example photo I showed was 200. It was absolutely caused by the camera/RAW file as it was present in every shot I took whenever I lifted the shadows in Lightroom.
Honestly, where the hell are these cameras in 2024. I would kill for a modern super portable camera like this with even the punching power of an older a6000 series. I'm convinced part of the reason people love the Fuji X100 series so much isn't just the aesthetics (though that's a big part) it's the small camera that you can take with you anywhere without lugging multiple big lenses, a strap, and just all the things that come with a modern camera system.
There is no sense in them. It is 9 mm f/3.5. Canon G7 X has 8.8 mm f/1.8 at the widest. Simply put compact cameras using the same sensor are faster and more compact buy phones are killing much of those also like the Canon G9 X.
@@okaro6595 yeah but that’s what I’m saying, is a modern version would be built different to this one. This tech is 9 years old, and in the same time we’ve made a lot of technological upgrades in both software and hardware. Phones will always be limited by being 1. Multi-purpose devices and 2. Simple physics.
I still have the box of mine, I lost it about 9 years ago, it was really handy taking around and getting the pics until I realised I'd left in the hotel room already way back on the train. With the price of it now I also seem to have lost something valuable

Samsung NX Mini Samsung Galaxy Camera Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 Samsung Galaxy NX Samsung NX30 Samsung NX500 Samsung NX1 I also have several of the Samsung kit lenses. I also have the Samsung NX 45mm and the Samsung NX 85mm which are 2 of my favorite lenses. I also have gotten several amazing shots from the NX 50mm to 200mm lens which is an amazing lens. I’m also currently looking for for the NX 18mm to 200mm lens and the NX 60mm lens.
i always wanted to get the nx mini, but decided to start with nx11. i have the nx210 right now and i’m really happy with it. i actually want to get the nx300 now (but i still NEED the nx mini it’s just co cute lmao)
I used to work as a sales rep for Nikon in London, back when these were being released. They were always the odd ones out - interesting novelty items, some good idea here and there, rather lousy build quality (especially the lenses). All of us reps felt quite safe, with mirrorless not yet being the zeitgeist, and DSLRs outperforming most other things out there. And the colours, and over sharpening of the photos in these meant they weren’t particularly popular even with just the general staff, nor customers. The NX1 hit different - it still had some remnants of over processing in the files, but other than that it was modern, fast, well built. We all started paying attention when that hit the shelves - it could’ve been a turning point; but alas, it was too late, and Samsung must have caught on to Sony becoming the one giant in that space, and wasted too much money on the range, and let go. Shame, really.
I keep hearing how modern smartphone cameras are better than these older 1 inch sensor cameras. But here's the thing, I have a RX100 m4, soon 10 years old, and I take it everywhere. Coincidentally I take photos at the same time and place as my friends who all have samsungs and iphones of the latest, and almost latest variety. We usually compare shots afterwards, and 90% of the time the rx100 m4 produces a better image, jpeg straight from camera, than the phones does. Admittedly it's my own picture profile as the stock sony one sucks, but still.
I just want small mirrorless camera with Smartphone software just imagine what it can do, smartphone was limited by the hardware but can produce good quality image and video that can sometimes confused us whether it was taken on Smartphone or camera if it just glance at once
I had NX200. At the time it was a good camera for great price with good system but it was almost impossible to get any other lens than kit lens. Good hardwere but marketing was disaster.
I never understood why companies made 1 inch interchangeable lens camera's, while you could get something smaller like the Sony RX100 with the same sensor size, IBIS and a convenient 10,4 - 37,1mm F/1.8 - 4.9 zoom lens built in.
If this camera or the Nikon 1 series had continued, they would have adopted some kind of computational photography like smartphones now. Small fast sensor, no mechanical shutter, very fast AF for its time....... It would have evolved in to stacked raw files at least. A shame really.
The limitation: back then you couldn't do video in a body this small. the first generation of tiny mirrorless sadly couldn't 1080p and it's really down to that. We''d be loving them still to this day if they could record video
I have it but please samsung bring back to Life the NX mini System, i cover a wedding with one of those, a Samsung NX mini 2 or more lenses, it's my favorite camera, more 17mm lenses for sale and NX adapter
Ok, hear me out as my ADHD type 3 and default right side brain goes into overdrive. Imagine, if a programmer quit Samsung and released a “hack” that turned the NX mini into a cinema camera with RAW image sequencing. I’ll see myself out.
Ok, hear me out as my ADHD and right brain hemisphere goes into overdrive. Imagine, a developer flipping $hit and quitting Samsung and later releasing a “starter pack hack” similar to Magic Lantern. Ok, I’ll see myself out.
I'm looking for a nice camera to replace my crappy point and shoot. SO many choices it's confusing. I want one to last the rest of my life. I am mostly interested in a good sensor that will take shots in less than favorable conditions without blur.

I'll take the challenge when I can get a stellar price.
I'm now expecting the price of these to inflate far more than they currently are haha
Great video! I wonder in what way, can this NX mini better than an iPhone 10 or later models?
Why is this video so wide
1" sensor same as on xiaomi 14pro ultra?
I had two NX300s. Absolutely fantastic camera.
4:24 😂 love it 😂
That plus a handmade pinhole lens from a disposable camera would go so hard
2:07
I single handedly liked the video for this 😂
I had this camera. It was very impressive and did great video. I only wish it had a greater selection of lenses.
8:29 That was an issue with that cheap lens, not the gm1 itself.
I'm curious about alternatives to this camera. The size sure is nice.
I have multiple Samsung Cameras. My entire collection of cameras is made up of 7 Samsung cameras and the DJI Osmo Action and the DJI Osmo Pocket.
Samsung NX Mini
Samsung Galaxy Camera
Samsung Galaxy Camera 2
Samsung Galaxy NX
Samsung NX30
Samsung NX500
Samsung NX1
I also have several of the Samsung kit lenses.
Can you do comparison with Sony ZV 1
i always wanted to get the nx mini, but decided to start with nx11. i have the nx210 right now and i’m really happy with it. i actually want to get the nx300 now (but i still NEED the nx mini it’s just co cute lmao)
What's a good camera - small to fit in my jeans pocket - for a pretty blurry portrait backgroud? Family stuff. Thanks!!
Mine is turquoise and I wish I could get my hand on one of these 17mm lenses.
I also have the turquoise color.
Love my NX300. Prices on these Minis are a bit too inflated for what they provide.
I have this camera, bought on ebay with 9mm lens in mint condition 8 months ago for £116...
NX1 was waaaay more than "pretty decent". I actually might have been the best mirrorless camera, when it came out.
I have three NX1's for filmmaking and photography. It was their flagship. Too bad they threw in the towel on their camera division.
Welp, there goes the price of the NX mini!
Admittedly it's my own picture profile as the stock sony one sucks, but still.
a mini camera: why would someone want to carry another little box in addition to their smartphone?
Because even the smallest mini pocket camera produces better images than the largest smartphone sensors. It’s just physics
@@khanmimaadyes, I can always tell it's a smart phone photo, especially in nature shots.
Nice camera but as you said $$$ , I’m looking for inexpensive pocket camera with good zoom and geotag/gps … any thoughts?!
What a shame they didn't produce more lenses for it.
I just want small mirrorless camera with Smartphone software just imagine what it can do, smartphone was limited by the hardware but can produce good quality image and video that can sometimes confused us whether it was taken on Smartphone or camera if it just glance at once
It should have a little grip. At least the same size as the 9mm lens.
I had NX200. At the time it was a good camera for great price with good system but it was almost impossible to get any other lens than kit lens. Good hardwere but marketing was disaster.
I loved mine so much unfortunately the sensor on mine no longer works during recording but takes great photos still 😢
THEY SHOULD RELEASE UPGRADED VERSION OF THIS SINCE IT'S VLOGGING ERA
The camera is so cool! I really want to buy it (im broke).
No, don't do it!
@@TomCalton HAHAHA okay
@5:12 Had to go back and see how you managed to film the lens you didn't have... Just to realise it's very obviously not there! 😅😅😅
slightly disturbed by the dust on your GM1's sensor
Make a video with samsung NX1
This looks fun! It seems like I can pick one up for about £100 here in Korea. Looks like a fun pickup.
Where are you able to find it there?
this camera arrived in the Philippines, sadly it failed big time and then samsung gave up their camera line up.
Wish I could get my hands on lumix gm 1, too bad can’t find one in India
My first camera was the Samsung NX300
I never understood why companies made 1 inch interchangeable lens camera's, while you could get something smaller like the Sony RX100 with the same sensor size, IBIS and a convenient 10,4 - 37,1mm F/1.8 - 4.9 zoom lens built in.
This is #SAMSUNG 💙
Really wish they make the new Ones, just in Compact category.. 🙏
Forgot they made cameras
I still have mine and all the lenses ❤
Compared to Sony NEX 3N : almost as small. Lenses are bigger though, except for a few pancakes. And the Sony is a bit heavier.
If this camera or the Nikon 1 series had continued, they would have adopted some kind of computational photography like smartphones now. Small fast sensor, no mechanical shutter, very fast AF for its time....... It would have evolved in to stacked raw files at least. A shame really.
BBROOOOO, THAT WAS MY FIRST CAMERA!🤣🤣😭😭
The limitation: back then you couldn't do video in a body this small.
the first generation of tiny mirrorless sadly couldn't 1080p and it's really down to that. We''d be loving them still to this day if they could record video
Just bagged one on eBay for £240 will see what I missed all those years ago - probably shouldn't even dream about finding a 17mm NX-M lens never mind
your jokes are the main reason I come here. Slightly thicker huh.
Reminds me a lot of the canon EOS m200 I have 😂
I have it but please samsung bring back to Life the NX mini System, i cover a wedding with one of those, a Samsung NX mini 2 or more lenses, it's my favorite camera, more 17mm lenses for sale and NX adapter
Why did it show up in my feed? 😢 I threw it away a few months ago... Because the image quality was way lower than my phone does
Found one for about 200 bucks cause im in korea on holiday
And I thought my Nikon 1 J1 was tiny.
Ok, hear me out as my ADHD type 3 and default right side brain goes into overdrive. Imagine, if a programmer quit Samsung and released a “hack” that turned the NX mini into a cinema camera with RAW image sequencing.
I’ll see myself out.
Trying to get one now! Sold out everywhere! TT
Nikon 1w/phase detect af far superior !
Well...now I can sell mine for wayyy more I bought it at. Only bought it at €75...
wait wait, slightly thicker than your what, sir? 🤨
