    • @LamboWalker23
      @LamboWalker23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      If you really want to look that way then I would say Lewis, Vettel, Kimi, Riccardio are much more closer to the triple crown then him, inspite of being 1/3 since Monaco is the toughest to win IMO, and that has nothing do to with the skills or the track. Finding a competitive F1 car takes decades and may not even happen.

    • @dani-elperezroveda4237
      @dani-elperezroveda4237 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      LamboWalker that’s somehow true but I disagree. Monaco has a lot to do with driving skills because to win in Monaco you’ll need pole and in a track like that drivers must be really really accurate and keep a winning pace during all gp. It’s true that nowadays just three teams are in the fight but it’s also true that good drivers stay in good teams (at least once in their career😂)

    This is probably your best video yet. There's so much hate for the non-stop talk of Alonso but it's 100% completely justified as he is the most interesting driver in the world at the moment. He is the hero motorsport desperately needed and we need more drivers to do the same.

    • @christophermichael8010
      @christophermichael8010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jared Round The hate on Alonso IMO was just because the hype around him was too much and even WEC Decided to move the Date of the Fuji Round only because Alonso wanted to participate full season in WEC. Alonso might be the greatest motorsport personality but he is overhyped.

    • @alansmith7158
      @alansmith7158 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      In my opinion he is not over hyped, his performances in F1, Indy 500 last year easily justify the hype.

    • @simrigpc27b12
      @simrigpc27b12 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      alan smith Absolutely justified. I really didn't like Alonso back in 06 and through the original McLaren years (Luis first 2 years). Was mad he landed at Ferrari and then his string of luck went south. Few seasons of that and I started to really feel bad for the guy.
      Then, I realized what a very real talent he was. I hope nothing but success for the guy, the hype is absolutely justified in every way, shape & form.

    • @kuyt20
      @kuyt20 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Christopher Michael - In what way is Alonso overhyped? Over-exposed maybe, but not overhyped or overrated. Nobody from the current F1 driver roster has ever done anything close to what he did with a poor Ferrari car in 2010 and 2012. He ended Ferrari and Schumi's dominance in 2005 and 2006. And he would've certainly took a third in 2007 if not for Ron Dennis' bias for Hamilton at McLaren, which ironically, lost both of his drivers the championship to Ferrari.
      The Fuji round was moved, NOT because Alonso wanted them to move it, but because Toyota did not like the idea of losing their most popular driver for their own home race, and McLaren were unwilling to lose Alonso from F1 for that weekend either. So Toyota made a formal request to the FIA to change the Fuji round. It had nothing to do with what Alonso wanted, but what Toyota wanted.
      Finally, Alonso is not the greatest motorsport personality. And even most of his fans would agree that he isn't. He has many faults personality-wise. But he gets attention because he is an incredible racing driver. Even fellow and former drivers, including long-time F1 pundits have said so on multiple occasions.

    • @Cain353
      @Cain353 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Mitch
      Funny, I remember Alonso pissing away the win at Fuji in 07 in the Mclaren. If he hadn't crashed through no fault but his own, he would have been champion. Even if he had scored just 1 point in that race...
      And all that Ron Dennis favoring Hamilton bullshit is tiresome at best. You really think McLaren would pay Alonso 20 million pounds or more to have him play second fiddle?
      Not to mention the fact Ron Dennis actually favored Alonso in the first half a dozen rounds including the Monaco GP where Hamilton wasn't allowed to qualify with the same fuel load as Alonso giving Alonso a 2 tenth advantage out of the box.
      Lastly, Alonso didn't stop Schumacher and the Ferrari dominance. Renault did with the help of the FIA. The FIA decided to introduce the 1 set of tyres per race rule knowing the Michelins would be better than the bridgestones. There's a reason Ferrari went from practically unbeatable to 3rd best without regulations for the cars changing much.

  • @Tristeroe
    @Tristeroe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +163

    There’s a further point we’ll see in 2019: if Alonso wins the current WEC championship he’s racing with Toyota, he’ll be 2/3rds away from another goal nobody has ever done, which is winning the Indy, WEC and F1 championships. We are dealing with something way bigger than a triple crown, but there are 6 races left on the WEC championship yet (including Le Mans 2019). I’m excited thinking about it.

    I know you mentioned him, but it was Hulkenberg who really kicked this whole thing off I feel. I still remember the talk around F1 at the time, and people almost in mild disbelief that it was able to happen, and then he won the damn thing too. It really seemed to puncture the bubble that is around F1 for teams and drivers (and those snotty fans who have never watched any racing besides it) and woke the whole paddock up to the possibilities of going and doing these things. I remember a lot of press questions asking other drivers when and where to may go and race, and I think this is that idea finally getting a look in. Just my two cents.
    And as a Fernando diehard for years, I'm just thrilled to see him happy and winning a race or two again.

    • @wejhvabewjty
      @wejhvabewjty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Fernando has been talking about doing racing outside of F1 since 2013 (or even earlier), you can check the interview he did with Mark Webber called "Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber | The 200 Club BBC". He also waved the starting flag in the 2014 Le Mans race and even rumors much earlier told Ferrari was could return to Le Mans with an LMP1 car after someone raced a P4/5 Competizione in the 2011 24 hours of Nurburgring.
      But now that you mention Hulkenberg, I believe that if he can be lucky enough to get a top car for a couple seasons soon enough he could also become an strong candidate for the Triple Crown. He also needs to get rid of his never better than 4th place curse, but that is a different story I guess.

      @sonoafafayon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TakeNoPrisoners To be honest, both Sebring and Daytona are a bit shit. They're fine as the American Triple Endurance Crown. Europe should have Spa 24h, Nürburgring 24h and Le Mans. And Sebring and Daytona should be replaced by Nürburgring 24h and Bathurst 12h, they're some properly difficult events and seem better than Sebring and Daytona. That is just my opinion of course.

    • @takenoprisoners6604
      @takenoprisoners6604 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sono Alright so I understand both Nürburgring and Bathurst are very famous tracks around the world. But for this reason people get caught up with a popularity contest instead of looking at the event itself and not just the track. To find the answers of what makes a sports car/endurance race more prestigious or famous you have to look at a number of factors. You have to look at the drivers that raced their, the teams, and the cars and manufacturers that raced at these events. Some of the greatest sports car drivers ever have never even raced at Nürburgring 24h or Bathurst 12h. Tom Kristensen, Derek Bell, and Jacky Ickx to name a few. Some of the greatest drivers of all time like Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Juan Manuel Fangio, Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, and Aj Foyt have all raced and won Sebring 12hr. Neither one even competed at Nürburgring 24h or Bathurst 12h. Another big factor is how long the race has been running. Sebring 12hr first race 1952, 65 races. Nürburgring 24h first race 1970, 45 races. Bathurst 12h first race 1991, 17 races. So the actual unofficial (the Triple Crown of Motorsport is also unofficial) triple crown of endurance races is Le Mans 24hr, Sebring 12hr, and Daytona 24hrs. But if anyone of those races were to be replaced it would only be Daytona for Nürburgring 24h. There's no question the Sebring 12hrs deserves to be the second best endurance race ever.

    I'm only three legs away from achieving the title. First of all I have to get a racing licence, then work my way up to the top of a particular field. Then win one of the races in that field, and then when the time is right move internationally to perhaps gaining a Le Mans seat, and have a crack at that, and then if someone would be polite enough to let me have a go in an IndyCar, I might just win a race at Indianapolis.
    I know it's a long shot, but it is possible.

      IndyCar engines and chassis hadn't been built by the same company in years. The Mercedes, and the earlier Chevy were the same engine, both built by Ilmor. The first time Chevy left, Mercedes ponied the money and took over with some technical assistance. So Ilmor's first job was to make new valve covers. Bada-boom. Instant Mercedes.

    I feel like you missed one of the biggest reasons that the Triple Crown, both American (Indy, Daytona, and 24hr of Daytona) and International Triple Crowns is that the Indianapolis 500 was moved from memorial day to the Sunday before memorial day, making many top-level competitors have to decide between their contractually obligated series race in either Nascar (Charlotte) or Formula 1 (Monaco, almost directly barring completion of the "true" triple crown) and the Indy 500. Many drivers would not have even had it as an option due to contractual obligations. Sure, many drivers could attempt these, but in most cases it would be after their careers or during a break in the primary careers, both not being simple to do. In the past, the event could be completed alongside their normal seasons.

    Completely disagree that this was one of the weakest grids in Le Mans history. I'm surprised that you believe that, David, just because there was only one credible manufacturer competing for the overall victory. Too many people are already putting an asterisk next to 2018 but they completely ignore many of Audi's wins in the 00s with no opposition or the failure of the GT1 factory teams to beat the open-top privateers in the 90s. 2018 was by no means a guaranteed victory for Toyota and they deserve plenty of credit for the 20 years of effort to finally win.

    • @wejhvabewjty
      @wejhvabewjty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True. 1996 and 1997 were won by the open-top private Porsches even though the offical team ran the 991 GT1s, than only won in their third year, 1998. The R8-R10-R15 era was only interrupted by the Bentley win (only because Joest decided not to race to support the Bentley cars instead who had Audi engines anyways) and a bit more with the 2009 Peugeot win (though they still won 2010, and from 2011 to 2014 with the closed cockpit R18s).

      Not the weakest one, but the FARCES in history of Le Mans. FIA and ACO failed to balancing the performances (BoP) between the Factory team and the Privateers in LMP1 class. The factory outlet had advantages on the hybrid system whilst the privateer keen to do that because the system is very VERY Expensive. This is exactly same when the 2014 IMSA's merger between grand-am and ALMS where the Daytona Prototype was much faster than the ALMS's LMP2 car, It was more than 3 year that IMSA finally did the balancing the DP/DPi and the LMP2 right. This balancing thing is not an easy feet, it needs time, development, and money to make the LMP1 car right on balance.

      Totally agree. I stayed up to watch the full 24 hours and I can assure you that the amount of puts overtakes, fatigue etc is all it takes to make a mistake and not even finish. Toyota were the best. They can’t do much about that though. Alonso also stepped into a team of that calibur because of his status in the motorsport world so he deserved t be in that car. All anyone has to do is google some of his overtakes during the Le Mans race and they’ll see the fine line between success and failure. Well deserved Toyota and Alonso.

    Guys some correction....
    1.: There is only F1 Monaco GP and the championship title doesn’t count here...
    2.: In LeMans only overall victory matters... So for example if you win Lmp2 but you finish 8th overall than, it’s not a LeMans win, it’s just a category win, so it’s not part of the tripple crown.... The same goes for GT cars.
    And btw i don’t think that any current indycar driver could ever win in monaco, simply because they should win F2 or stg like that to even get into F1, and then spend some more years in a midfield team to get to a top car, when they could fight for it.. So they are simply to old for that... Just think about it... Every one, who was in F1 and have won indy500 was first in F1 and went to America and not the other way around....
    Also Stevens... Yeah, he won indy500 but he was in F1 previously and after his first year nobody wanted to sign him, guess why... 😜

    I only got to watch racing either live or on playback from 1999 onwards. One race that caught my attention was the 2001 Daytona 24 hours.
    It was the first and sadly last sports car race to be run by Dale Earnhardt, and I remember listening to commentary by Jackie Stewart on Speedvision about how a lot of drivers are very specialized and how he wished to see more of drivers going out of their comfort zones trying different things.
    One other reason for why there wasn't as much crossover with some cases was due to how some teams would not want to risk losing drivers in other forms of motorsport. Namely with Formula 1.
    At least according to Wikipedia (reliable source I know - sarcasm-) drivers like Stefan Bellof and his tragic accident at Spa 1985 were some supposed reasons, since he was also competing in F1 at the same time (even if he wasn't doing well with Tyrell. That being said, it would be something to see more drivers do this in some way.
    Not just from F1 to elsewhere, but dare I say Indycar and so forth.
    We see hints of this with the Daytona 24 hours. Even before the Weathertech series, during the Rolex Sports car series, sometimes Indycar, ex F1 and Indycar drivers took part.
    I can't recall which Grand Am race it was but I saw Kyle Busch climbing into a Daytona prototype with what appeared to be the same gear he'd wear at a NASCAR race (as in the At the time M&M's sponsored suit, helmet, HANS device and all). We'll see how time goes by.
    My pointless rambling for what it's worth.
    Does anyone even remember the 2001 Daytona 24 hours?

    David, you forgot to mention how Bernie Ecclestone tried to torpedo involvement in in sportscar racing by killing off group C by lobbying changes favorable to F1, moving dates of races to conflict with Le Mans, and other shady deals to maintain F1s "superiority". Contracts also play a big role( this is why a Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, or even Fernando Alonso couldn't compete with Porsche in Le Mans, for example. These are very important parts of why F1 drivers rarely competed.
    And of course there is the tangible fact that Alonso has not had competitive machinery in Formula1 from 2014 onwards. Had Alonso a car to win a Monaco Grand Prix, nevermind another world championship, that (and he's more or less said this too) would be his number one focus.
    Do not get me wrong here. Fernando Alonso doing this is amazing for motorsports, and this is how it should be, plus with better regulations this interconnected world will become even better as a whole, with more drivers competing in the different series. But I do not think it is fair calling these other drivers one trick ponies for doing well in an environment that(at least for F1) encouraged isolation both passively and aggressively. There is also the matter of contracts and the admitted lack of competition in F1 and general incompetence by McLaren that would drive an attempt to achieve glory somewhere else(hence why it is thought that Alonso is headed to Indycar full time).
    This video was great but it missed those key points and some context where it was needed.
    I'm still rooting for Alonso to do it though. I think it's his time. And he could very well be the only one to win all the championships with Fuji being moved allowing him to be available for the Superseason and him potentially going to Indycar.

    Other notable racing feats: Michael Schumacher winning the F1 title five years in a row. Jimmie Johnson winning NASCAR's Cup championship 5 years in a row, Bourdais winning the CART championship 4 years in a row. I think these feats are just as tough as winning the motorsports Triple Crown. As far as Triple Crown in one form of motor racing you had the NASCAR Winston Million which awarded a million dollars to any driver who could win 3 of the four crown jewel events at the time in the same season. These events included the Daytona 500, Winston 500 at Talladega, Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte & Southern 500 at Darlington. Only 2 drivers won this prize in 13 seasons & that was Bill Elliott & Jeff Gordon. NASCAR current crown jewels includes those four events but now includes the Brickyard 400 & Jimmie Johnson in 2006 is the only driver to have won three of those 5 races albeit the former spring Talladega race was swapped with the fall race so now that race would be the crown jewel race. Another NASCAR Triple Crown could be winning 3 of the 4 plate races at Daytona & Talladega in the same season, only 1 driver has done that: Dale Earnhardt in 1990 & it woulda been 4 for 4 had it not been for a last lap flat tire in the opener at Daytona. IndyCar's Triple Crown was any driver that could win all 3 500 mile races in the same season that is when there was 3 500 mile events on the schedule. Winning a 500 mile race in an IndyCar period is major BUT winning all three in the same year would be epic, this was only done one time by none other than Al Unser Sr in 1978 the year before the formation of CART. For that matter even winning 2 500's in the same year is tough in an IndyCar your who's who list of winners includes: Bobby Unser, Gordon Johncock & Rick Mears to name a few. Another tough IndyCar feat is 500 mile wins at multiple tracks at - at least 3 different layouts & this would be drivers such as Al Unser Sr, Mario Andretti, Danny Sullivan, Rick Mears, Tony Kanaan, Juan Montoya & as of late Will Power with this years win at Indy he's now won at Indy, Pocono & Fontana...

      idk why I actually want to see him go boat or moto racing. Unlimited Hyroplane (essentially the F1 equivalent of boat racing) or P1 Offshore and then MotoGP.

    I would like to see Alonso win the Triple Crown. Alonso is a Great Driver and his winning the T-crown would help bring back the excitement of motor sports that has been lost.

      Santiago Velo Barros no, that’s been in place since 2016. That’s because they extended the pit garages so that it could accomodate 60 cars instead of the original 56 that had been in place since 2011. But no 2018, is not the most overall because both the 2016 and 2017 events both match it in terms of grid size.

    Where's they hype for Montoya's journey to a Triple Crown? It's not like he's not desparate to prove he's one of the fastest drivers - his record with the Bugatti Chiron is the most recent addition I can recall.

    Huge respect to Fernando Alonso! (Great upload btw!!!) I really hope Alonso goes back to Indy - and wins! (And also maybe tries the Daytona 500, that would be amazing and also i really think out of the F1 fraternity Alonso would stand the best chance).
    I also really hope Juan Pablo Montoya competes at Le Mans, and wins!!
    Hope youre well :)

    I agree with you!
    More f1 drivers would help the Indy 500 not so much in the US, but with a world wide audience.
    Same with LeMans.
    The other way around f1 drivers being successful at Indy would help the f1 in the US. Perhaps even more NASCAR drivers would come to Indy, if they could compete with Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel and the others on an oval. Indy could and should be the real race of champions! That would help the race even in the United States.
    Now with american owners, I hope there is a chance f1 letting a spot open for Indy, maybe even counting it for the WDC.
    Btw: Please ignore my bad english. It's not my native language.

    Umm, what about Dan Gurney? First driver to win in Sports cars, Indy Cars, F1, and NASCAR. LeMans overall winner, with AJ Foyt, of whom it was them who started the tradition of spraying Champagne from the winner's podium. Won in F1 and IndyCars, in his own cars, in arguably one of the most dangerous era's in practically ALL forms of motorsports. Cars he built won the Indy 500 three times. Trans-Am, Can-Am winner. Owners championship in Trans-Am. First driver to wear a full-face helmet in F1. I like Alonso, because he is a bit of a throwback to the AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, Al (Sr.), Bobby, and Jerry Unser, and Dan Gurney days. He just needs to build some cars of his own, and run some dirt races. Then he will be a true well rounded racer.
    I think Dan deserves at least a mention in this conversation. I don't see where his accomplishments can't make up for his twice runner-up positions at Indy.

      Dan Gurney was a great driver who excelled in many different series. However, he didn't win Indy or Monaco or an F1 title, despite winning in virtually every series in which he competed. In fact, Gurney won the first race I ever attended (1970 Can-Am at Mosport). I was very sad to hear of his passing not long ago.

    Actually, Ford's Triple Crown "Victory" isn't accurate, as it was actually Lotus who had designed the F1 and Indy 500 winning cars. And while I'm at it, their first F1 WCC was 2014, with their first win at Monaco the year before.
