    I really love your style and how you cover the older eras of F1 but I must point out another near grand slam of motorsports. Mario Andretti was F1 champion, Indy 500 winner, Daytona 500 winner, 24 Hours of Daytona winner and runner up in the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans with a class win in that race in addition to many other wins of note in all sorts of cars and series.

    I saw Graham Hill racing from his very early days in the mid fifties till the end of his career. Graham was always one of the great characters of Motorsport.

    Le Mans in 1972 was a very different track compared to when the chicanes were introduced.
    Cars in his era were very dangerous with nothing like the safety standards in modern machinery.
    Add to that the differences in reliability in recent years and Hill's achievements can never be equalled in status terms.

    I had followed F1 racing back in the mid-1960s to the early '70s, where Graham Hill was a highly respected and gentlemanly driver, where there was never a critical word spoken about him in his driving career.
    He was instrumental with the development of the Lotus 49 F1 car with the Ford-Cosworth DFV in 1967, only to be overshadowed by Jim Clark's successes with that car/engine combination in that season.
    His recovery from his two broken legs was nothing short of remarkable, given the medical technology of that era when it came to treating such traumas.
    I still have an edition of _Auto Racing_ magazine that contains a written article of his recovery and strenuous preparations he went through to race at the South African Grand Prix. The fact that South Africa has its summer in January helped in his preparations for the race, as Hill spent some of his time sunning himself in the warm climate.
    Hill had a spoken cameo role in the 1966 movie, "Grand Prix," playing the part of F1 driver "Bob Turner." He looked and spoke at ease on camera, as his charisma shown through on the screen. Considering the attributes of his determination and work-ethic he possessed to become a racer of worldwide renown, he could have become a first-rate movie actor had he chose that profession, as a British version of Clark Gable.

    Another great video!
    Graham Hill's "problem" is that he raced at the same time as Clark. And, when someone talks about greatest drivers, usually starts with Clark.

    30:30 if Alonso continues to race into 2025, I believe he'll be the first 44-year-old since Graham to race in F1. The oldest F1 driver in 50 years, and still competitive.

    • @nedzosf1gridbox
      @nedzosf1gridbox  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    @MosportRacingSchool 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The original triple crown, as reported by the motoring press in the early '70s and by Graham in at least one of his books, is victory in the Indy 500, Le Mans, and the World Driver's Championship. I never heard of Monaco being part of it until recently. Why that would change is beyond me.

    It's insane, how history repeats itself, arguable the most naturally talented driver ever in Jim Clark is killed in a terrible accident, Graham Hill has to pick up the pieces in 1968, 26 years later in 1994 arguably the most naturally talented driver ever Ayrton Senna is killed in a terrible accident, Damon Hill has to pick up the pieces in 1994, absolutely insane, they should make a movie about it to honour and pay homage to these great drivers!

    I don't think there is anything "under the radar" about Graham Hill. That 'Stache! I started checking out picture books about race cars in the 70's when I was just a little kid and he was the first driver I could name, even after he died.

  • @richardwilton722

    I always enjoy hearing about Graham Hill, but if you want to commentate on international sport, you’ve got to pronounce non-English names better- not perfectly but at least so it’s recognisable. Reims is the English spelling of the French city of Rheims. There is an English pronunciation of it, which is reams, like reams of paper. Alternatively, the French pronunciation is somewhere between rans and rangs. Willy Mairesse came from the French-speaking part of Belgium. His name is pronounced meh-ress not marry-essi.

      @@nedzosf1gridbox Thanks for the reply. Sorry if my tone was severe. In Graham Hill’s era, Spanish and South American drivers were scarce in F1. In the 50’s there were some and they came back in the 80’s.

  • @kitko33
    @kitko33 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Not to take anything away from Graham Hill but but a tripple crown is Indy championship, F1 title, and Le Mans win. The closest anyone got to that is Jacques Villeneuve - won the Indy title AND Indy 500, F1 Champtionship and came 2nd at Le Mans.
    Hill won an Indy 500 race but not the champtionship. Alonso made a laughing stock of himself at Indy.

    • @nedzosf1gridbox
      @nedzosf1gridbox  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s widely known that Indy 500 is the race in the crown. And Alonso performed well he was just fucked by reliability

    • @richardwilton722
      @richardwilton722 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@nedzosf1gridboxAgreed. The Indy 500 race, not the championship has always been the American component of the crown. Suggesting it’s the Indy championship is just plain wrong. The Indy car championship didn’t exist in Graham Hill’s day.
