Inside look at becoming an Elite Hotshot Firefighter

  • This 22-minute documentary movie short goes deep into the wildland fire academy's militaristic training methods and Marine Corps style of hardcore discipline to motivate young fire trainees.
    Former Marine Corps DIs take command of 30 individual civilians, weed out the toughest 18, and transform them into a working team of gung-ho, can-do wildland firefighters.
    From check-in to graduation, the three-week academy employs tough physical and mental challenges, and uses a steep 800-foot San Diego mountain "MF Mountain" as a metaphor to overcome and conquer personal preconceived notions of mental and physical limits through teamwork and close group comradery.

    Just remember *Republican* U.S. Rep. *Tom McClintock* called wildland firefighting an unskilled labor and voted against additional funding. Mean while his state California is currently on fire...If he's in your district I suggest voting for someone else.

    Well this certainly ain't how my hotshot crew was. I would say our PT was probably worse but we didn't do all this militaristic stuff. Overhead must all be ex-military. Most fire crews are not like this, although the PT is just as hard if not harder.

You can also get on an engine that is stationed near a shot crew. During fire season they pull from engines and other crews to “fill in” during assignments

    I see many asking "Is the paramilitray training really necessary?"
    My answer is maybe, maybe not.
    I believe the main thing this sorts out is if each individual has a strong enough WHY in their mind.
    Don't like the paramilitary gauntlet of training? Quit. Don't like Running, hiking with heavy pack, digging fire line? Quit.
    You HAVE to know your WHY and have the motivation to see it through.
    As many have stated here not all IA , Hotshot, smokejumper training is Paramilitaristic but it is still very challenging. You will still need a WHY.

      USAJOBS.GOV
      The forest service deadline was around October, usually falling somewhere around the end of September. If you hop on it now, the National Park Service still has app’s open up until tomorrow for some jobs, and early February for others, as does the Bureau of Land Management. You can still get on a crew for the upcoming season if you get your resume squared away, submit your app, and start making calls. You’d be applying at the GS-3 level as an entry level forestry aid/technician, unless you’ve got a Bachelors degree in a forestry related field. Then you might be able to qualify for a GS-4. The NPS and the BLM are both solid agency’s and getting on a handcrew would be your ticket towards training to get on a shot crew. There’s a hotshot app open on usajobs for the bureau of Indian affairs as well out of Arizona.

    • @DiamorphineDeath
      @DiamorphineDeath 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also dude you don’t have to do any academy’s where they shave your head and make you do boot camp. You can if you want I guess, but just put in an application, find some contact info, call the crew’s overhead and tell them how stoked you are to get a job, work hard, and learn. Then ask if you can stop by in person and drop off your resume and put a face to the name. Then if they like you, you’ll get a callback and a tentative job offer and be good to go for the season. Then train your ass off for it and show up in shape and ready to go.

      You do realize what these guys actually do right? They jump into the middle of fires without almost no support to combat massive wildfires. A few die every year. Hell, I think more wildland firefighters die in a year than marines in combat. Don't act like the marines haven't already been disrespected. I've seen plenty of little 5ft 3in goblin looking mexicans join the marines and act hard because they are marines, in reality they are doing inventory in a warehouse. Far away from any real danger. If you cannot understand why wildland fighters who need lots of discipline to simply not run away from the job need this type of training. Then I'm guessing you are one of those crayon eating 5ft 3in marines sweeping a floor somewhere. This isn't the early 2000s anymore. You guys aren't going house to house in Fallejuh so spare me the dishonor crap.
