They definitely didn't play this song in S3 cause Hopper died. They played it cause Mike lost Will again 😭 The fact that they cut out "and we kissed part" makes me think they shot more scenes for the rest of the song and will show Mike thinking of Will when Will left as a flashback in s5
It definitely applies to Hopper too! Just because a song has a significant meaning to one group of characters doesn’t mean it has to be exclusively about them. This show doesn’t work like that most times the songs have multiple meanings. The song Heroes is introduced with Hopper on the screen first in season 1. Then it transitions to Will, then the party, then Mike, then Joyce and Jonathan. So it was chosen again in season 3 for similar reasons it’s another fake out death scene. People thought Will was dead but he wasn’t. People thought Hopper was dead but he wasn’t. The lyrics they cut out in season 3 however, are very specific to Mike and Will. But only that section!

The interesting bit about this is that the term Upside Down only came along later in production. The original script refers to it as the Other Side. And who is on the Other Side in season 1?
I came here after I read the Flickergate theory (I personally think it’s too amazing to be true sadly) that whole idea even without the song Heroes would be a perfect full circle for these two and part of the mysteries as well 😊 In the first episode’s light flickering way before the demogorgon - it is caused by Mike and Wills kiss in the Upside Down in the future.. just imagine that! 🥰 Looping time / time travel stuff included ☝️🤓
