Her one and only solo album The Misseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of the greatest albums of alltime IMO. NO skips and she broke almost every record with this album which was both critically and commercially successful. She wrote one of the most beautiful , deep and vulnerable albums when she was only 22-23 years old and is an icon to MANY❤❤
This is SUCH a brilliantly written and composed song with lyrics that go into deep and dark places in a relationship. Lauryn was writing/singing about a lover who could never give her everything she wanted but who also didn't want to let her go. Note the lyric, "And when I try to walk away you'd hurt yourself to make me stay" -- that is a VERY specific and direct reference to self-harm. She knows the relationship is no good, but every time she tries to end it, her lover threatens to hurt himself (or maybe even kill himself) and that pulls her back. It's a terrible form of emotional manipulation. That's why the song opens with "Loving you is like a battle/And we both end up with scars", she's telling us up front that this is about a toxic relationship. And there's a nice flip when she goes from "No one loves you more than me and no one ever will" in the first verse to "No one's hurt me more than you and no one ever will." That conflation of "love" and "hurt" shows how you can genuinely love someone and want to be with them even as the relationship is causing you pain and is ultimately bad for you.

They don’t take requests from their reaction video comments. They post a video on their channel every week titled “request weeks here” (usually wednesday or thursday). When they post it go there and put your week in the comment section. You put the artist’s name then under it list the songs you want and number them. You can comment as many weeks/artists as you want but make them separate comments. If a week you post gets enough “likes” to be in the top4 then it will be voted on in the following livestream (usually saturday or sunday). If it wins the vote then they will react to your week. Good luck! I’m rooting for you! ♥️
My all time favorite song by Ms. Lauryn Hill. Her voice is chef's kiss👌🏾😘 And the aesthetics in this video, especially for '98 was so clean and modern. As a filmmaker, The visuals are immaculate! PS, and Beyonce said blue light doesn't look good on Black girls. smh I know you lyin! It's like girl, have you watched this video or those scenes of Keisha in the movie Belly? Both proved that was a whole lie
Really cool observation that you linked this video with ‘98’s Belly. The director of this video is Malik Sayeed and he was Hype Williams’ cinematographer for Belly 💫 I used to be obsessed with music video directors back in the days. I could always identify their style by watching music videos on MTV, BET, The Box etc.
@@finefeatheredfriend9240 Yes! I still listen to the two singles she had and I actually just last week sent SMG a request for her subway scene from that hbo special.
Maybe it has to do with undertones? I'm guessing that Beyonce has a warm undertone and Lauryn & Taral have a cool undertone so the blue light suited them better? So what Beyonce really meant was that the blue light doesn't work for HER. 😂😂
My favourite Lauryn Hill song. Her voice is truly unmatched. For anyone who doesnt know, this song is allegedly about Wyclef Jean, as the two reportedly had a very tumultuous on-off relationship back in the 90s (even though he was married!). If any of you still haven't listened to "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill", PLEASE do it!
The miseducation of Lauryn Hill is considered one of the best Hip-hop/r&b albums of all time. I recommend listening to all or anything from that album. As for familiarity with her voice, haven't you guys seen Sister Act 2?
Lauryn has won EIGHT(8) Grammy’s and FIVE(5) of them she won for her debut album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”…… Ya’ll missed out on this particular moment in time…… Ms. Lauryn Hill is in a league of her own talent-wise and as an artist…… There is even a video of Nikki Minaj kneeling on the floor bowing down to her repeatedly when Nikki was blessed to meet Ms. Hill for the first time….. Lauryn is Nikki’s favorite rapper of all time……. Just to put things into perspective 😊
I had horrific heartbreak in 1998 when this song came out and I listened to this song on repeat and cried for days until I looked like a frog. I can’t hear this song without thinking about it 😬I’m pretty sure the album version goes on for longer after the guitar kicks in.
Fun fact lauren hill wax even still pregnant or gave birth her second child when she filmed this music video because she was pregnant with her second child in the doo wop (that thing) music video in 1998
The video colors, lighting and slow motion really capture the vibe of the song well. The sundrenched room, the club with blue light on dark skin, so beautiful.

I can sing this song word for word verse for verse. Add my own lil adlibs for a lil extra razzle dazzle. Beyonce covers part of this song in her OTR Tour performance.
One thing at a time. It's always best to start the reaction with the official recording first, besides Lauryn's voice been seriously on the decline since the 2000's. It is very rare to find recent and decent live performances of her, except we only sticking to The Miseducation & Fugees era.

people set themselves ablaze because she has only one album and she's not all that because that's all there is in her catalogue. Which i think aims to diminish her value and her talent as an artist. Looking back, at the two years since the first single came out - she was many a categories with some heavy hitters across several award shows and cleaned up really well during that time off of this one album. This one album opened alot of doors for her as a songwriter, producer and arranger - not just for herself, but for other heavy hitters. People don't acknowledge or value the impact and time between albums or appearances. Anytime a black woman sweeps the grammy's they always reference Lauryn Hill. For awhile, it was just her whose talent and one album cleaned up majorly. Also, it's rumored that this song is about her 'relationship' with Wyclef while he was married to his wife (whom he's still married to this day).
