Both of the new ones, sound like Mick songs, Keith's bass on ANGRY is very encouraging.
Mick addressed the book topic on the CBS interview last weekend, and he said he isn't doing it because it requires like 2 years of essentially living in the past, and that doesn't interest him. While we'd all love to read it, I respect him further for this. He's about living in the now, the thing so many of us miss. Mick has always had a sort of more enlightened big-picture perspective than many based on what I've seen of him through the years, and given he's been a megastar since his teens, that's quite remarkable. But who knows, if ever comes a time when the tours don't happen and he has down time, I wouldn't rule it out. Great interview here with DeCurtis!

Funny enough, I'd love to tell you my personal story of when I was also in Keith's Jamaica house after befriending a bartender on a cruise ship that pulled into Ocho Rios. It was like a dream/Alice In Wonderland scene.

What an enjoyable conversation. I’m the same age as Anthony De Curtis, and have been a Stones fan since I was 13. I still have posters photographs and paintings of The Rolling Stones hanging in my house. I believe that they are artists, individually and as a band. An artist never stops creating. Mick is an actor. His life has been the stage. As Anthony alluded to, we will never know the real Mick. It’s his shield, his armor against the craziness that must follow him everywhere. Most of us wouldn’t be able to handle it as gracefully. Keith is a musician through and through. He’s mellowed with age. Sebastian Kreuger, an amazing artist from Germany, who has done some of the greatest renditions of the Stones has spoken about what a talented painter Ronnie is. They are artists in the truest sense of the word.

If they do I hope it's an Andrew Watt production. I heard a bit of Rollin' Stone from the new record and it blows away Blue and Lonesome. They should really keep Andrew for the rest of their career. He is definitely the best producer since Chris Kimsey and it's not even close. Hopefully they rerecord the tracks they have with him guiding the production and telling Mick what to do.

It was never something I came back to but this time around it absolutely floored me.
Some exquisite playing by everyone in the band. Unbelievably tasteful. Almost fitting as the final album with Charlie. A high point for the band absolutely.

The Stones, Beatles, Dylan, Led Zeppelin and other 60s artists were not just musicians. They also were part of a social and cultural revolution that continues to this day. Rock is also now a well established genre. Rock is no longer just for rebellious under thirty year olds.😀
Well the others, at least. Zep just pillaged blues and folk artists to make bank. Nothing deep about them except rehashed Tolkien lyrics.
@@steveconn every artist to a certain extent including the Stones draws from previous works. Led Zeppelin produced some of the most varied and complex music of the rock genre. Your entitled to your opinion.

Maybe. But it's not like the so called "hate" for post Undercover albums is completely universal. Other respected writers like Christgau and Robert Palmer have been very positive towards the later albums. @@captainkirk70

Well done! That interview he did with keef in Jamaica was legendary. I was in college at the time and my buddies and I all knew Keef had to be high. Hopefully you can do Robert Greenfield next! With his Stones podcast, I’m sure there’s a plethora of topics to chat about! I interviewed him for my Master’s Thesis in History on the Stones 1972 Tour, a great interview.

Great job Justin! Love the spliff in Jamaica story 😄 Really like how Anthony is a fan and defends them against the cheap, unwarranted cynicism regarding their later years. Nice of you to give some push back, though, on the Some Girls deluxe outtakes. Mick did a good job, but those songs still sound better with the original vocal vibe! Good call.

Funny, how I feel an unfinished outtake with barely a lead vocal as in No Spare Parts works as a better song than the finished one for me! I'm still glad they put it out. I love "Do You Really Think I Care" and I am VERY pleased with how that turned out. Amazing how Mick fit into that 77/78 voice again!

Fantastic work. Anthony DeCurtis just made me feel good. Both of you , the respect and love that we have. The need. For as Andrew L. Oldham scribed on the album cover backside. They have been and are, a way of life. I’m going to immerse myself in the tour.. when it happens. Hope we cross paths. At a bar across from MSG , NYC. Bill German walked by with couple of friends. I rushed out, he stopped his friends were.. what .. why bother? But he was nice took all of 10 seconds. But he got it. To make that little connection meant something.

Great interview! Two absolutely key discussions at the end: reissues of early stuff, and the new era. On the New Era: you brushed up against the mortality issue, but didn't address it head on. Here's the question nobody can face: could the Stones continue without Keef? Could there be a Mick'n'Ronnie Stones? I assumed they had to stop after Charlie. I grudgingly accepted the necessity for the 2021 Jordan shows as they were booked, but didn't like Steve's thunderous drums. Saw them in Hyde Park in 2022, and like 2018, was wowed. And then the post Charlie work made me really, really appreciate Charlie, as did your Timolex pod! Now I can just about imagine a post Keef Stones, and how much that would throw Keef's playing into relief, and force us to appreciate the scale of his accomplishments, just as we have with Charlie. Also, you gotta remember that Ronnie used to have Keef's job: in the Faces it was Rod & Ronnie writing and leading. As you say, come what may, they will carry on! OK, on to the idea of early reissues. I'd love to hear anything and everything recorded in Chicago in the mid 60s. Take the Around and Around LP, which has a lot of 12x5 as well as Wanna Be Your Man, recorded in London. Compare that to the Chicago stuff! World of difference! IMHO the opportunity to record at Chess, with those producers and engineers, was absolutely key in their development.

Keef's Life is a great read. I'd love one from Jagger, but wholly understand that he just wants to keep plowing ahead.
I dont know about singles but Keith has played bass on a ton of stuff since JJF. I believe Ronnie played bass on ER the song. There was alot of stuff Keith played bass on while Bill was messing with synths in the 70's and early 80s. I only checked after you brought it up. But id didn't pay attention to what songs were singles.
Yeah Keith's played bass on a bunch of stuff. But lead singles not as common or even recent.

Why don't anyone talk about the area the uniqueness of their music with the performance. For example: When the stones are playing "Tumbling Dice" that is pure art. As Mick does the dice moves on stage, as if they all were in a casino playing craps, Keith is doing the same thing on the guitar he is rolling the notes up and down the fret board, as if he is shaking the dice. God rest Charlie Watts soul, it was like he was sitting at the tables as he played the drums to tumbling dice, and Ronnie seemed to be walking the casino floor. Very unique, great music and true art. The same thing with "Memory Motel." Keith and Mick are life time friends, and Memory motel is one friend telling the other friend, about loosing the girl he loved and spent so much time with, and the other friend, "Keith Richards tells Jagger she's got a mind of her own, and uses it well. He's saying the girl is smart, and one of a kind. He is consoling Jagger, two friends talking. Art imitating life. SOMEBODY PLEASE TALK ABOUT THIS!! When I was a kid in grade school in the 60's The Rolling Stones became my favorite Rock N' Roll band to the point my friends in High School called me Rolling Stones Frank, LOL! And I still love em. I saw them @ MSG 75, Keith in 88 on his birthday with the Winos & Steel Wheels in Shea. Crappy Diamonds is the worst thing they ever released. The Stones last gasp was Steel Wheels. Jagger's vocals sound like an old bad lady and what's left of this great band sound as old as they look !!
No way man. Worst thing ever? That song Whole Wide World alone totally rocks. The guitars are straight off Black and Blue or Some Girls. Great energy throughout. Lots of great moments on the new album. The tune with Gaga is awesome. The guest appearances. The Muddy song at the end. All really good stuff. I saw them at Shea in 89 also and I think this record is better than Steel Wheels. I will say Almost Hear You Sigh is a top notch tune and it was great that all five Stones were still together.
Big question: will you be adding 'Doom & Gloom' and "Ghost Town' to the tracklist?

The tracklisting for Hackney Diamonds is set. It comes out this Friday. The ship has sailed for Doom and Gloom, Ghost Town too unfortunately.

A Dirty Work boxset? No offense but do you have a therapist? Lol. Just kidding. I'm 53 and I remember those records coming out and buying them from the store. Back then you didn't know when a record was coming out. They'd just appear. I used to call the record shops all the time asking if they had a new album out. Lol.I mean, anything up to then is ripe for a boxset. ER sessions were some of their most prolific and it did go to #1. You still got Black and Blue and IORR. Both #1 and big sellers. I know they've stolen some songs from those outtakes to put on the incorrect time period boxsets. But DW is their worst and they were struggling to come up with a good album. I'm sure some of the raw outtakes are superior to the official release of DW but you should do some research on the sessions. Charlie was barely if at all on the record. It was Steve Jordan and Anton Fig. I'd definitely be down with an Undercover boxset as they were still functioning as the Stones at that point and had a little respect for each other so the demos are probably worth listening to. I know I come off negative to the post '83 output but they had really stopped functioning as a band. Mick became obsessed by his solo career. He found it to be a flop and couldn't bear it. Thats why we had the Steel Wheels reunion and huge tour. After Jagger turned his back on the Stones and dogged them in the press as past their prime and he didn't feel they were good enough to play with anymore. He actually said that in the press during the promo for his solo albums. I would say his stance on them at that time did the most damage to his relationship with them. He did turn his back on them. I think it took decades if ever till now to gain back their respect for him. Plus his solo career totally trashed his legacy at the time. He was seen as kind of a joke that took years to shake. We don't have a Beggar's Banquet or LiB boxset although that would require them to work with ABKCO but I think they have repaired that relationship a bit. The Stones were able to give the Verve credit on Bittersweet Symphony. Something Allen Klein refused to do while he was alive. So I think they could work out some boxsets for two of the Fab Four albums.
The Stones worst is most other band's middling results. That said, the "Dirty Work Worst Album Ever" Myth is slowly fading. Most younger fans can connect with it easier than the fans who may have lived through it. Despite its shortcomings there's a lot to enjoy on it and by no means can be easily dismissed. But a lot more on that when the time comes 👍👍
@@HangFireStonesPodcast If DW is not their worst what is? I know there could be a no bad albums argument but I highly disagree. I have a thousand better records in my collection. But I have a massive collection of records that includes the cool Jazz and blues greats. Plus some metal and even the underground punk, grunge records. DW is just a bad album with the Jagger contributions being particularly awful. You know the ones. Lol. The production by Steve Lillywhite is terrible but you can tell the Keith songs weren't touched by him. I find the slick production on all the following records to hold back the best songs on the DW and on ecords. Again the Keith songs untouched by Jagger's choice of producer. Jagger had some great songs but way too slick to be truly great on those records. I haven't by choice listened to anything past Undercover in decades. I just took a recent listen based on your opinion of them. I skipped through 75% of the songs. SW being way, way too slick. I couldn't bear my favorite band since I was 8 (1978) sounding like that. I think the Keith songs and records to be very good but far from being the best since Exile as some critics and fans would lead you to believe. They are not as good as TY. I do like most of Wandering Spirit but again the best songs are too derivative of previous highs of the classics. But way better production by Rick Rubin. But you can tell Rick couldn't tell Mick what to do. either. Andrew Watt is their 3rd best producer. Only Jimmy Miller and Chris Kimsey are in the same league.. I'm excited for you to hear Sweet Sounds. By far their best song since side 2 of TY. I'm always surprised by fans who rate any of the '85-'05 records above the previous classics. '68-'81 are just untouchable records. Best run by anybody. Only two songs I can't listen to. Oh Cherry Oh Oh Baby and Indian Girl.. Only Led Zeppelin comes close.Their run is pretty untouchable as well. But even them at their weakest is still better than DW by a landslide.
@@captainkirk70 Well that's my point. You and most people are hung up on the mixes of these later albums. There are still songs underneath all that "bad" production.
My point is the hate on Dirty Work has been wayyyy overblown. Sure it's knives to the ears because of the production but there is still some value in there such as Jagger's vocals and the overal aggression of the album which is super unique to this batch of songs.
"One Hit" is worth the price of admission alone. Overall, DW is not their greatest but I find a lot of these 80's albums for legacy artists like the Stones or Dylan are just blown way out of proportion.
Same goes with Steel Wheels. Not the best mix but the songs are still there. Rock and A Hard Place and Almost Hear You Sigh...missed out because of the mix? That's a shame.
@@HangFireStonesPodcast totally agree on Steel Wheels mix. My 1989 vinyl sounds terrible. By contrast Voodoo Lounge sounds amazing.

I don't think Jagger's voice is stronger now. I enjoy Anthony, but he's not being very objective in this interview.
Jagger may not be putting the same strain on it like he did in his 20's but can you blame him? He's trying to save his voice so it can be used for as long as he possibly can. We wouldn't be here in 2023 listening to Mick if it weren't for the vocal precautions he's had to take in the last 30+ years. The fact that he can still sing in the same keys and still do some great falsetto is a testament to that.
@@HangFireStonesPodcast Anthony mentioned him singing 'Let It Loose' today. Can you really imagine how that would sound? He'd never hit those notes. His voice isn't as good live, or in the studio. He's lost that growl - that gritty sound he used on songs like 'Sway', 'Let It Loose' 'Rip This Joint', 'Crazy Mama' etc.
QUIT the bringing up of dirty work.
