The wrestlers said "Ok, you know this isn't real but we're going to entertain you", the audience said "Ok, we know its a work but we're here for escapism" and it was never talked about. You wouldn't go up to Ridley Scott and say "Well shit, that alien isn't real" - its a similar thing, an unwritten contract. Now, with wrestlers going "well, yeah its a work", they break their side of the contract and slap people in the face with it, probably because they're not skilled enough to make people want to suspend their disbelief. In my view, at least.
I always said that, everyone knew it was a work, but secretly hoped we were wrong. And every now and again you'd see something that would make you think, "there's no way *that* was fake!"

Previously he has worn outfits based on Daredevil, Flash, Captain America, Silver Surfer (which looked awful), Joker, Batman, Spider-Man, ... And let's not forget Triple H's Conan cosplay, or his terrible Terminator cosplay.

So they decided to insert NXT stars. Which made for a completely different show. I'd like to know Brian and your take on this.

Brandon Cutler, Peter Avalon, QT Marshall, Michael Nakazawa, the two guys who teamed with QT, Leva Bates: are all jobbers. Brandi should also be jobbing to all the girls, but she won't. You can also have tag team guys taking losses in single matches and viceversa if needed. What bothers me is that in the women's division it feels that if you're not Japanese or Britt, you're losing, they're killing all of those girls.

Chikara is only trying to be niche, so it would be stupid and pointless to point out that they are and NWA has a 20 year plan that's meant to be a slow burn, time will tell if it's a good plan or not but they're where they want to be at the moment. With the amount of money that AEW is spending they need to grow beyond niche or they will be running in the red and be lucky to make it 10 years. Trust me, I'm not scared of AEW (I'd like to see them succeed) but when I look at them I see TNA from 10-15 years ago on steroids and not in a good way. I've seen this show before, I know how this ends if something's not changed.

I only saw ONE back slap tag on the new Power episode this week It was when One of the 6 man tag guy back slapped James Storm BUT I saw they then grabbed the rope and slapped hands. SO Thank You Corny.
Omega's entrance was a homage to the video game "Undertale". It was a huge Indy hit a few years ago and is still going strong in gaming circles. The video that cut in was also an homage to the game as well as a shot at Ibushi (and maybe a future angle if rumors are to be believed). It was also the most over thing in the house. My kids HATE pro wrestling , for the most part, but we had to watch Kenny's entrance multiple times as they marked out to it. Then they had to go onto social media to see what the creator of Undertale thought of it. I thought it was OK, but i knew what it was. But i'm telling you, as much as I don't care for it, I think they are on to something here. All my kids think the intro was awesome, they think some dude that has a d20 as his logo and is an 'rpg gamer' is far cooler then any other gimmic on the card (to be fair they've not actually SEEN Brandon Cutler yet, so there is still time for them to change their minds). My point is, the younger generation has completely different takes on Society, let alone pro wrestling, then us older guys do. What I see as dumb and ridiculous my kids see as cool. I think AEW could grow, but if they do, it will be cross culture growth with younger folks who are into all the OTHER things the Bucks and Omega are into, and get caught up into pro wrestling. It's not going to be wrestling fans trying to find their wrestling fix.

Jim and Brian are the best tag team in the world of podcasting when they talk about wrestling you know they will offend people because the truth hurts. Fast & Loose doesn't necessarily translate to good wrestling it needs a good structure if not it's a sequel of trainwrecks with no ryhme or reason.
AEW thoughts: *Most matches go a couple of minutes too long and the offense is always close to 50/50 for each individual, and so many movesets are similar so it’s constant suicide dives and kicks...each match feels like two CPUs in a wrestling video game. *Their promise of realism in modern wrestling was a lie. Time limits are great, but multiple matches have had confusing rules and a lack of attention to details - no counts from the refs while on the outside, lack of tags in tag matches, rope breaks in No DQ matches, no DQ finish after outside interference, etc. *To add to that, some of the cute little things they do to make it more realistic are either confusing or pointless. It’s hard to get hyped for someone who is presented to be a big deal when their record on the graphic is “0-1” or “2-2.” Justin Roberts counted the final couple of minutes in the Time Limit from the Moxley/PAC main event, but didn’t do that for Jericho/Allin despite both matches ending at similar times toward the end of the second hour. These sort of things existed in wrestling before, but it’s 2019 and we were promised an alternative to the norm and the mainstream. *They can’t end an episode properly. Darby Allin puts up such a strong fight just to be punched by Hager and then taps out? What did that do for him after the whole idea was that he was refusing to quit? A Time Limit Draw in a main event? Why didn’t we see all of that drama after that match on the actual broadcast? A poorly timed small package to end a major Tag Team tournament with the audience visibly confused and frustrated? And the two teams in the finals are in a blood feud because one team injured the third member of the other team but NONE of that came across in the match, nor was the win presented as much of a big deal. *Their women’s division is currently awful and there’s no promise of it getting any better. *Speaking of, there’s a serious lack of diversity in many ways on AEW. Lack of quality females, lack of guys of different size and wrestling styles, the vast majority of the roster is skinny white guys and they’ve managed to get away with that by throwing what seems to be half of their Hispanics in Jericho’s faction. *Having different wrestlers book different parts of the company could have made for good variety in a wrestling show, but instead it feels very disjointed. *WWE has a lot of awful comedy, but AEW has done it multiple times within one month, and I’m not even talking about the Rick and Morty promotion. *Multiple AEW fans have stated on these and other videos that pro wrestling is “stupid and silly anyway” so why not just have fun, which is a thought process that works for indie style wrestling but never for a major promotion that wants to make big money. *The product becomes more and more niche and insider and the fans are so hostile to outsiders as if they have some kind of ownership of a one-month old product that they are actually alienating new people, to the point where they’ve literally lost close to a million people within one month despite being a hot new promotion with tons of marketing behind it. *The promos feel a lot less scripted which is great, but 90% of the promos are only coming from former WWE guys who are already partially over simply from their work in WWE. It looks like they don’t trust most of their own talent with a microphone. *A lot of the stuff they do feels really self-indulgent at times. Brandi’s stuff already feels that way. Omega had a 3 minute entrance that was all about his journey so far as a wrestler and none of it was properly explained to the audience that didn’t follow him until now. The Cody video packages and entrances are well done but it feels like he gives himself the best of everything. *There are so many spots in each match, particularly each TAG MATCH, that you forget about most of them by the end of the match and the camera only catches half of them anyway. *We’re starting to see some of the same people every single week because the roster is paper thin, but we don’t know any more about some of them since week 1 despite seeing them multiple times.

you’ve eloquently listed a number of things that have bothered me about aew. and i say that as someone who got on a plane to witness ‘all in’ as my very first live wrestling show. all your criticisms combined are the reason i haven’t watched aew live since week 1 and have kept my wkly wrestling viewing to nwa powerrr. i know most go on about the old school feel to it, but for me, nwa gives me the right balance of the opposite of all the things that annoy me about wrestling in general while keeping it all under 1 hr a week. it’s also actually cool that it’s run by the lead singer of the smashing pumpkins. why they don’t push THAT more, i don’t know. anyways, i agree fully with Brian, they’ve neglected opportunities to welcome more fans to their show during the crucial early days of their brand and company. hopefully it’s not too late for them to wise up, but someone with experience and leadership really needs to step in and drive things b/c the crew they’ve got don’t have what it takes to do it yet.

Hers's a summary of Jim Cornette's biased reviews of AEW. He doesn't like most of the people in it (The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, etc.) so he is always going to trash their shows. Brian will always wholeheartedly agree with him because his purpose on the show is to be Jim's "yes man" sidekick.
Here's the thing - I do give AEW a hard time, but this episode pretty much mirrors my feelings about it. I'd love it if it was a product that I could get behind and presented wrestling in a good light. The real reason it gets the bad rap is the same reason that I wouldn't talk about wrestling during 2002 onwards with non fans. The kind of stuff AEW puts on TV, I'd be embarrassed to show to someone I'd want to be interested in it. The same way I was embarrassed with all the stupid stuff WWE was doing from 2002 onwards. Put simply, AEW (and most of WWE for that matter wit the exception of NXT) I wouldn't recommend to someone who isn't a fan (or a lapsed fan like me) because a lot of it is a big turnoff, and way too niche to explain to someone who's first impression is "this is as stupid as I thought it would be". So I get the criticisms - saying that certain things are "over with its audience" don't matter, because it won't get over with anyone else. I know for a fact I'd look like a moron if I shown my non-wrestling fan friends the matches with Cassidy, or Stunt, or Kiss, or any of the other gimmicks that make up half of their rosters. Enough people think like this, as the audience will continue to shrink.

The Brandi Rhodes vignette thing with Kong was similar to what Salina has been doing in MLW which has been done before too but the Salina Vignettes are great.
I became a fan back in Aug 1977 and i was caught in the illusion fo pro wrestling for the first ten yrs till i have gone to my first live event in west palm beach Florida and over the years since 1987 i got to see first hand how it was done the business side and the wrestlers in the ring. I have mega respect for people who have come before the new wrestling. I'm old school Fan Jim hit the nail on the head in what he said i wish i could have gotten into the biz as a ref now I'm just a fan watching the bull that's out there I glad the AEW is the new kid on the block at least they are making the wrestling action be first then the storylines and they have old and new wrestlers in the ranks.
I love Jim and Brian. I will say this though, their critiques are from a standpoint of expertise, and most of it is beyond what the average wrestling fan or enthusiast would be able to pick up on. I appreciate Jim's encyclopedic knowledge, but it is seriously nuanced! I personally hated the outfits and the girls match, and even Orange Cassidy didn't look thrilled to be wearing that outfit when he came out. Skipped both of those segments.

No tv network is going to pay for the wrestling styles that jim wants. It doesn’t draw young viewers which are the most important demo. Aew so far has been top 6 in the target demo every single week. Which is amazing for a show that wasn’t meant to pull 500k a week.

When I tune in and see a guy fake kick someone in the knee and his hand is in his pockets I am out. The only thing good about AEW right now is Jehrico and Cody. They need to give more for MJF to do. AEW was pitched as an alternative to WWE. I just didn’t anticipate it to be a worse version of WCW.
Ronald Cole except they didn’t and that’s now how tv ratings work. Tv ratings are broken down by demo, with the target demo 18-49 being the most important. This is due to what advertisers are looking for. So far aew has been ranked between 4-6 on the cable ranking every wed. The only outlier being week one which they were 2. As for losing 700k fans, this is not exactly true, nor is how you measure the ratings. Aew was 6th last and 6th this week in the cable ratings. Yes they did less viewers, but the World Series literally drew 22 million viewers for game 7. Otherwise the previous 3 weeks they hovered around 1 million viewers and were ranked 4, 6th, 4th in the rankings.
That’s the point though. I love listening to Jim for many reasons, but especially because of the angle from a behind the scenes booking aspect of things. We can get opinions all over the place, but to have someone follow it up with genuine “industry / psychology” reasoning is great.

@@The80sWolf_ I don't hate Indie wrestlers I was one. Many of the ones I delt with until I stopped Wrestling knew very little history of the business and just did high spots. I grew up in Droz's hometown, and we're taught to be more careful. Pat Tanaka and Bam Bam Bigelow taught me the business. At my age (36) I worked in 2 eras pre TH-cam and more recent. The Wrestling style I learned day one in 2000 is leaps and bounds different from today.

Brandon Cutler, Peter Avalon, QT Marshall, Michael Nakazawa, the two guys who teamed with QT, Leva Bates: are all jobbers. Brandi should also be jobbing to all the girls, but she won't. You can also have tag team guys taking losses in single matches and viceversa if needed.
What bothers me is that in the women's division it feels that if you're not Japanese or Britt, you're losing, they're killing all of those girls.

Chikara is only trying to be niche, so it would be stupid and pointless to point out that they are and NWA has a 20 year plan that's meant to be a slow burn, time will tell if it's a good plan or not but they're where they want to be at the moment. With the amount of money that AEW is spending they need to grow beyond niche or they will be running in the red and be lucky to make it 10 years.
Trust me, I'm not scared of AEW (I'd like to see them succeed) but when I look at them I see TNA from 10-15 years ago on steroids and not in a good way. I've seen this show before, I know how this ends if something's not changed.

Omega's entrance was a homage to the video game "Undertale". It was a huge Indy hit a few years ago and is still going strong in gaming circles. The video that cut in was also an homage to the game as well as a shot at Ibushi (and maybe a future angle if rumors are to be believed).
It was also the most over thing in the house. My kids HATE pro wrestling , for the most part, but we had to watch Kenny's entrance multiple times as they marked out to it. Then they had to go onto social media to see what the creator of Undertale thought of it.
I thought it was OK, but i knew what it was. But i'm telling you, as much as I don't care for it, I think they are on to something here. All my kids think the intro was awesome, they think some dude that has a d20 as his logo and is an 'rpg gamer' is far cooler then any other gimmic on the card (to be fair they've not actually SEEN Brandon Cutler yet, so there is still time for them to change their minds). My point is, the younger generation has completely different takes on Society, let alone pro wrestling, then us older guys do. What I see as dumb and ridiculous my kids see as cool.
I think AEW could grow, but if they do, it will be cross culture growth with younger folks who are into all the OTHER things the Bucks and Omega are into, and get caught up into pro wrestling. It's not going to be wrestling fans trying to find their wrestling fix.

AEW thoughts:
*Most matches go a couple of minutes too long and the offense is always close to 50/50 for each individual, and so many movesets are similar so it’s constant suicide dives and kicks...each match feels like two CPUs in a wrestling video game.
*Their promise of realism in modern wrestling was a lie. Time limits are great, but multiple matches have had confusing rules and a lack of attention to details - no counts from the refs while on the outside, lack of tags in tag matches, rope breaks in No DQ matches, no DQ finish after outside interference, etc.
*To add to that, some of the cute little things they do to make it more realistic are either confusing or pointless. It’s hard to get hyped for someone who is presented to be a big deal when their record on the graphic is “0-1” or “2-2.” Justin Roberts counted the final couple of minutes in the Time Limit from the Moxley/PAC main event, but didn’t do that for Jericho/Allin despite both matches ending at similar times toward the end of the second hour. These sort of things existed in wrestling before, but it’s 2019 and we were promised an alternative to the norm and the mainstream.
*They can’t end an episode properly. Darby Allin puts up such a strong fight just to be punched by Hager and then taps out? What did that do for him after the whole idea was that he was refusing to quit? A Time Limit Draw in a main event? Why didn’t we see all of that drama after that match on the actual broadcast? A poorly timed small package to end a major Tag Team tournament with the audience visibly confused and frustrated? And the two teams in the finals are in a blood feud because one team injured the third member of the other team but NONE of that came across in the match, nor was the win presented as much of a big deal.
*Their women’s division is currently awful and there’s no promise of it getting any better.
*Speaking of, there’s a serious lack of diversity in many ways on AEW. Lack of quality females, lack of guys of different size and wrestling styles, the vast majority of the roster is skinny white guys and they’ve managed to get away with that by throwing what seems to be half of their Hispanics in Jericho’s faction.
*Having different wrestlers book different parts of the company could have made for good variety in a wrestling show, but instead it feels very disjointed.
*WWE has a lot of awful comedy, but AEW has done it multiple times within one month, and I’m not even talking about the Rick and Morty promotion.
*Multiple AEW fans have stated on these and other videos that pro wrestling is “stupid and silly anyway” so why not just have fun, which is a thought process that works for indie style wrestling but never for a major promotion that wants to make big money.
*The product becomes more and more niche and insider and the fans are so hostile to outsiders as if they have some kind of ownership of a one-month old product that they are actually alienating new people, to the point where they’ve literally lost close to a million people within one month despite being a hot new promotion with tons of marketing behind it.
*The promos feel a lot less scripted which is great, but 90% of the promos are only coming from former WWE guys who are already partially over simply from their work in WWE. It looks like they don’t trust most of their own talent with a microphone.
*A lot of the stuff they do feels really self-indulgent at times. Brandi’s stuff already feels that way. Omega had a 3 minute entrance that was all about his journey so far as a wrestler and none of it was properly explained to the audience that didn’t follow him until now. The Cody video packages and entrances are well done but it feels like he gives himself the best of everything.
*There are so many spots in each match, particularly each TAG MATCH, that you forget about most of them by the end of the match and the camera only catches half of them anyway.
*We’re starting to see some of the same people every single week because the roster is paper thin, but we don’t know any more about some of them since week 1 despite seeing them multiple times.

all your criticisms combined are the reason i haven’t watched aew live since week 1 and have kept my wkly wrestling viewing to nwa powerrr.
i know most go on about the old school feel to it, but for me, nwa gives me the right balance of the opposite of all the things that annoy me about wrestling in general while keeping it all under 1 hr a week.
it’s also actually cool that it’s run by the lead singer of the smashing pumpkins. why they don’t push THAT more, i don’t know.
anyways, i agree fully with Brian, they’ve neglected opportunities to welcome more fans to their show during the crucial early days of their brand and company. hopefully it’s not too late for them to wise up, but someone with experience and leadership really needs to step in and drive things b/c the crew they’ve got don’t have what it takes to do it yet.

Here's the thing - I do give AEW a hard time, but this episode pretty much mirrors my feelings about it. I'd love it if it was a product that I could get behind and presented wrestling in a good light.
The real reason it gets the bad rap is the same reason that I wouldn't talk about wrestling during 2002 onwards with non fans. The kind of stuff AEW puts on TV, I'd be embarrassed to show to someone I'd want to be interested in it. The same way I was embarrassed with all the stupid stuff WWE was doing from 2002 onwards. Put simply, AEW (and most of WWE for that matter wit the exception of NXT) I wouldn't recommend to someone who isn't a fan (or a lapsed fan like me) because a lot of it is a big turnoff, and way too niche to explain to someone who's first impression is "this is as stupid as I thought it would be".
So I get the criticisms - saying that certain things are "over with its audience" don't matter, because it won't get over with anyone else. I know for a fact I'd look like a moron if I shown my non-wrestling fan friends the matches with Cassidy, or Stunt, or Kiss, or any of the other gimmicks that make up half of their rosters. Enough people think like this, as the audience will continue to shrink.
I would show NWA to non fans before I'd show them AEW.

I became a fan back in Aug 1977 and i was caught in the illusion fo pro wrestling for the first ten yrs till i have gone to my first live event in west palm beach Florida and over the years since 1987 i got to see first hand how it was done the business side and the wrestlers in the ring. I have mega respect for people who have come before the new wrestling. I'm old school Fan Jim hit the nail on the head in what he said i wish i could have gotten into the biz as a ref now I'm just a fan watching the bull that's out there I glad the AEW is the new kid on the block at least they are making the wrestling action be first then the storylines and they have old and new wrestlers in the ranks.

I love Jim and Brian. I will say this though, their critiques are from a standpoint of expertise, and most of it is beyond what the average wrestling fan or enthusiast would be able to pick up on. I appreciate Jim's encyclopedic knowledge, but it is seriously nuanced! I personally hated the outfits and the girls match, and even Orange Cassidy didn't look thrilled to be wearing that outfit when he came out. Skipped both of those segments.

Jim has admitted that he hates the elite besides Cody. He was trashing aew before it even began. Because he wasn’t tony khan to make a show that jim would want.
Here’s the simple facts that cornette can’t face. No tv network is going to pay for the wrestling styles that jim wants. It doesn’t draw young viewers which are the most important demo.
Aew so far has been top 6 in the target demo every single week. Which is amazing for a show that wasn’t meant to pull 500k a week.

Tv ratings are broken down by demo, with the target demo 18-49 being the most important. This is due to what advertisers are looking for.
So far aew has been ranked between 4-6 on the cable ranking every wed. The only outlier being week one which they were 2.
As for losing 700k fans, this is not exactly true, nor is how you measure the ratings.
Aew was 6th last and 6th this week in the cable ratings. Yes they did less viewers, but the World Series literally drew 22 million viewers for game 7. Otherwise the previous 3 weeks they hovered around 1 million viewers and were ranked 4, 6th, 4th in the rankings.
That’s the point though. I love listening to Jim for many reasons, but especially because of the angle from a behind the scenes booking aspect of things. We can get opinions all over the place, but to have someone follow it up with genuine “industry / psychology” reasoning is great.
He skipped the Kabuki Warriors major fail there, They have more charisma than any of the flippy guys and worked like a proper heel team.

Unfortunately pro wrestling is dead. The internet killed it years ago. Theres too much "behind the curtain" going on. So called smart fans are responsible for its death. I harp back to the wrestling I grew up on. 1991 to 2004.
Then Jim is also responsible, he talks about backstage stuff all the time. And he's done so for years.

@@The80sWolf_ I don't hate Indie wrestlers I was one. Many of the ones I delt with until I stopped Wrestling knew very little history of the business and just did high spots. I grew up in Droz's hometown, and we're taught to be more careful. Pat Tanaka and Bam Bam Bigelow taught me the business. At my age (36) I worked in 2 eras pre TH-cam and more recent. The Wrestling style I learned day one in 2000 is leaps and bounds different from today.

I think this proves tony khan who hasn't watched wrestling since 01 or 02 shouldn't run aew because the librarians aren't a good gimmick and overall he has yet to show leadership, literally cody and the bucks & olivia are the bookers and i view aew at times with some of their gimmicks they have as a indy promotion that finally got over because they found the right billionaire who doesn't understand wrestling from main stream to indy out lawish. Hopefully shahid doesn't take a lost from his son because this isn't looking right on tony's end as someone who should be running this.
