    That lid should have been binned years ago!! 5 years typically… 7 years maximum for a decent composite lid. An ABS lid 5 yeas tops! It’s the EPS inside the shell, that’s the problem, it degrades over time. Running an old helmet like that is just asking for trouble.

      I not longer use this helmet... but I heard a dealer assert on his video that EPS liners shrink by HALF (lose half of their volume) if you go much beyond the 5-year lifespan... which is complete nonsense. I would love a cite to an actual study by a materials lab, or by Snell Labs, or anyone else reputable as to EPS degradation. Got one? How about the chemistry of EPS deterioration? I read somewhere that UV light degrades styrene. I suggest you avoid UV transparent helmets.

      The leftover high-density polyurethane foam from the Lithium battery was adhesive-backed, as stated.

    a helmet that old is good for the bin and nothing else,the outher scale looses impact capacity every year

    • @lsgettier
      @lsgettier  ปีที่แล้ว

      By "scale" I assume you mean shell. But how do ABS, fiberglass, and carbon fiber shells compare? Which binders are best? What is the chemical mechanism of deterioration for each material? So this is based on: 1) your opinion; or 2) studies by .materials labs?

    Where did you purchase your foam?

      The recommended Shorai LiFePO4 (lithium iron-phosphate) battery has higher energy density and is therefore SMALLER than my bike's original PbS04 (lead sulfate) battery, so the Shorai comes with numerous layers of adhesive-backed high-density open-cell polyurethane foam to line the bike's battery box so the smaller Shorai battery will fit. There was plenty of foam left over after installing the Shorai battery. As mentioned, adhesive-backed moleskin foam, from amazon or almost any drug store, may also work.

    9 years?!? Should have been replaced 4 or 5 years ago. ANY modification is a no-no. Unsafe and will void warranty. This is wrong from the start

      There's a TH-cam video with a contrary opinion as to the lifespan of shells-- especially of quality helmets like Arai and Shoei (and I would add Schuberth and Caberg). A shell material used in inexpensive helmets is injection-molded ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). ABS is an alloy of those three plastics. ABS can be extremely rugged. Its downside is that it is heavier than a well-made fiberglass or carbon fiber shell. It doesn't sound like you've done your materials science homework. I hope you don't believe everything "people say."
