    I had a pretty bad wreck at high speed with a Bell Vortex...I slid on my face. No concussion, lost the visor and scraped off some paint...for $45 the helmet did a great job. I have an Arai but haven't looked forward to another 100mph crash with a torn rotator cuff!

      The man did say alot but he did mention materials used... Between the cost of helmets, the outer shell materials are what drive up the cost... Inner protection is a about the same I think, with some dual-density stuff and a few other tricks for protection

    Impact protection is just one aspects of a safe helmet. It needs to provide good vision, good ventilation, good protection from rain or cold, good weight. etc etc.

    Another factor in more expensive helmet comfort is that if fatigue and distraction. A helmet with pressure point, one that doesn't ventilate well, one that wobbles in the wind, or one that is heavy due to cheap materials can result in distraction from fiddling with the helmet or fatigue which can lead to slower response times.

    • @250txc
      @250txc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a long shot to me.... Lighter might be better but due to cheap materials might be off the path... I asked about a simple question on the ice-chest-foam liner that is in all helmets, because it is what allows the brain cushion before slamming into the skull in a crash.

    Here's your quick answer: Buy Shoei, AGV or Arai if you want the safest full-face, 1-piece helmet. And racers don't just wear whatever they get for free... they are VERY particular about their gear and its quality. They ARE a good metric... they battle test this gear more than anyone.

      You cant determine safety by brand. Yes, the more premium brands may have different features in them but the amount of people that purchase a helmet that is the wrong size is a big problem, another of which is the fact that loads of them dont know how to even put on a lid properly but wont accept help from someone trying to advise them.

    Only thing I could argue is that cheaper helmets use cheaper materials. And the problem with that is that the foam inside the helmet is often less good at staying in shape on cheap helmets. So the fit of the helmet deteriorates faster on cheap helmets. But that is based on my own experience and a very small sample size.

    Safer? Think so, but no crash is the same and could create difference injuries. But in terms of passive safety, YES! If your helmet is comfortable, fits well and is quiet, you can concentrate better and the better you feel, the safer you ride. And expensive helmets are also better build. So screws don't get lost, visors don't rattle, ventilates better, pinlock etc...it all ads up to passive safety.

    • @CanyonChasers

      Exactly. I actually don't like the word "safe." IMHO, safety is an illusion. All we can really do is reduce risk or exposure to risk.

      You would be a genius if you stopped riding now while you are ahead. My buddy was selling his sportsbike- took one last ride, last year. He had a new family, baby, great new job, and things were looking up for a change. That all ended when he impacted the back of a truck that was stopped in the slow lane. State vehicle doing construction work. He was also going too fast. Today only one arm works- and that is it. He never leaves his bed or wheelchair and pain is constant. Docs won't even call him back anymore. Nothing they can do and they said he will only get worse- never better. He was a good looking dude in his 20's...and a pretty good rider. Had full gear on too. Stuff happens out there.
      Before you think I don't get it, I rode 20 years and I LOVED it. No major accidents at all- I was more lucky then good. Do learn about counter-steering though. Never ride one handed (almost got me-.hit a bump and throttle hand twisted to hold on.) Install a steering damper.
      Riding became my life. I felt cool and accepted. I've never really been either. Everyone loves a biker. I went to a bar once and before I even sat down, a women bought me a rose- great feeling. No, I was shy and did not close that deal. The bike made me feel good though- rides with friends, etc. I like the bike Rallies too. I know you will not stop- especially because some idi*t on YTbe says so. I really hope you stay safe. These days people do not know how to drive- they text, they turn left in front of us, etc. As much fun as it is, it's not worth the risk. Find a safer hobby.
      Cheers!

Higher end helmets used in professional racing are the safest bet, but there could be others of much less price that do nearly or equivalent of the same job. The more seals of safety like SNELL the better.

      You should look up how a DOT helmet gets certified. It's based on a faith based system. Meaning the manufacture self certifies. It's complete bullshit. I would never trust it unless it was a well known brand that has a lot to lose by cheating on the DOT certification (i.e. Arai, Shoei, Bell, AVG, etc.)

    I like the take that at some point more expensive helmets are better because they're being used by people who care for their equipment.
    I'm getting ready to thread the needle on trying to find a safe helmet with a small budget. I'm a beginner rider on a Honda FT500. I'm not a high need for speed guy, I expect 55mph is going to be my top speed. Does anyone have thoughts on LS2 for a first helmet, and upgrading to AGV when I have more cash on hand? LS2 meets DOT and ECE, but doesn't score very well in UK SHARP assessments. That said, reviews I've seen note that they seem better than others in the cheap end.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We did this video right before the Sharp thing caught on, so with that said, I would encourage you to pay attention to it. It's a great metric. A large percentage of head injuries come from crashes at speeds less than 55kph (35mph). That is to say, my best advice is to get the best helmet you can swing. If it was me, I'd probably start with the AGV.

    • @maxwellschmidt235
      @maxwellschmidt235 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CanyonChasers thanks for the advice. I assume with corona virus my MSF class is going to come later in the season. More time to wrench and make sure I'm ready to ride smoothly. And more time to save and get a nicer first helmet. Lower-end AGVs do seem like the right compromise between safety and budget.
      Glad to know that sharp system is worth paying attention to. And thanks for replying, I figured it was a shot in the dark asking questions on an old video.

    While I agree that Racer’s always wear the most expensive helmets because they can no afford to make a mistake, this by no means does it verify that they are there for the best helmets, they are often locked into a specific brand because of team sponsorships. Part of what makes these helmets so expensive is that they must cover the cost to get their product visible. Certainly you want to stay away helmets that are made from Polycarbonate, and replacing you helmets after spill that even just scratches your helmet, it needs to be replaced if the helmet is more that 5-7 years old. Good helmets are the cheapest insurance in rider safety.

    I have been riding bikes since the 80`s and find it disgusting that a clear cut certification has not yet been clarified, and as anything in life IT STILL seems to be directed to MONEY, I feel very vocal on this subject as governments/manufacturers are still not being truthful and it is surely it is TRULY about time the whole category shenanigans is cleared up, my son bought a helmet that looked stylishly great but the construction was abysmal, please bear in mind he was only riding a 125 his first indocturin to biking at 17 year old here in the uk but it is new riders who will really pay the price for LIES and underhanded manufacturers tricks.
    I am annoyed at the helmet industry and ask, could the big companies see fit to sell a decent helmet to the next generation of bikers by sponsoring/logo in bold print to advertise there helmets and reduce the cost to the new breed of learners:)
    PPS i was born when supposedly we landed on the moon are you telling me manufactures cannot make a SAFE HELMET at a decent life preserving price, PMSL.

    i have to disagree here on a few points, and i would like your views. i can buy a Agv k5 plain for say £200 but Agv k5 with graphics costs £340, so im only paying for graphics considering they are the very same helmet with the same padding and comfort, Now regarding Arai, Agv, Shoei, shark, Icon and other top manufacturers i think they are guilty of this and their prices are more orientated this way rather than its safety. however then there is LS2 who over brand their helmets and the price for an LS2 with less branding and more graphics also costs more. i belive its the only reason top helmet manufacturers can justify the heavy price tags.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I call absolute BS at what he said 2:16. Perhaps there are other factors playing into those stats. Helmets and certainly in the case of decent quality Helmet A vs. decent qualtiy Hemet B does basically NOTHING to prevent concussions. NOTHING.
    I got a mTBI years ago and have studied this subject (and Engineering.) I have also read many books on this topic. A well fitted, secured, high quality brain bucket can do an excellent job at preventing you from cracking your skull. You should wear one. To think for a second they will prevent a concussion is misleading. The only disclaimer I will make is that if you wore no helmet at all, then everything would be worse- much worse. The concussive forces however would not change much. Some newer helmets claim to diffuse some of the impact energy by turning. That "might" help but only slightly. Not enough at all IMHO but better than nothing I guess.
    The brain floats like an egg inside a very hard skull full of impact ridges. When you stop suddenly that soft brain, the consistncy of soft butter slams into the inside of your skull. That is where the damage happens. If it twists that makes things much worse. That is called the dreaded diffuse axonal injury. You really don't want that. Hurt the brain stem and you will be lucky if you survive, but you will likely never thrive again. It often leads to paralysis, coma and/or death. Nothing good.
    In fact, you do not even need to physically impact something to get a brain injury. Blast injuries (changes in pressure), roller coasters can come close, extreme shaking and even extremely hard breaking can have an impact.
    The best solution by far, stop putting yourself in situations where you need a helmet. Now that is winning. I don't ride anyhmore. A brain injury can really mess you up- trust me. Years later and I am still not the same. Not fun.

A Snell rated helmet is better at impact protection than a DOT rated helmet. A smoother rounder shell is better than a super aggressive shape as it reduces chances of creating extra forces on your head and neck while sliding.

      That's why you SAVE up for a helmet in the $500 range. If were able to save up enough to buy the motorcycle you can save a few more bucks for the one item that can save your life. I put off riding my first bike for 3 weeks just to save enough on my paychecks to buy a Shoei helmet.

      @@DoomFinger511 I bought a Helmet before I ever sat on a bike. You though sir are in a huge minority of new riders. I've seen it all at the gear shop I work at. I've even seen experienced riders learn about WHY more expensive helmets are better in most ways.

      @@s70driver2005 Maybe it was because I got introduced to riding by taking the MSF course. They taught me the importance of getting the right helmet first. I went back and forth to Cycle Gear 3 times, getting my head measured, trying on all these different helmets and watching Revzilla reviews until I finally decided to shell out $700 on a Shoei rf-1200 with a photochromatic lens. In hindsight I'm glad I did it. My dad took the route of buying 3 different helmets under $200 each for different situations. For almost the same investment I have just one helmet that works in every situation.

      @@DoomFinger511 you got the right helmet for what YOU needed. While I can argue all day about why Arai is the best helmet that doesn't mean it works the best for ALL riders. When i fit someone in a helmet i ask a variety of questions to get them in the best helmet that fits their needs, comfort, saftey and budget. I wish everyone would/could buy an Arai or Shoei but that isn't always the case.

      @@s70driver2005 I was really torn between the Aria and Shoei. The Aria was super comfortable. The only reason I went with the Shoei was because it offered the photochromatic full lens shield. The Aria only offered a photochromatic pinlock insert which still let light bleed in from the corners. If the Aria had the full shield option I would of gotten it instead. However I also looked at the Scorpion EXO-420. It was $150 and SNELL rated. Only helmet I found under $300 that had a SNELL rating.

    the answer or no. dot is dot. Snell is Snell. ece is ece. all the extra money your paying for is name brand, how light the helmet is, features, noise level, longevity(maybe), ventilation, visibility, and arrow dynamics. As for protection its all the same. a $150 Snell helmet has the same protection as a Snell helmet that cost $500. I personally think some people look like a fool dressed like they going to the track with a full suite on when they just going for a ride. I personally would not buy a helmet for $50, unless its on sale and from a reputable brand.

    • @casualxbobcat8494
      @casualxbobcat8494 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily. A big aspect could be the materials that the shell is made out of. Best example, Shoei's AIM+ shell. It has a much better abrasion resistance and overall integrity than any poly carbonate shell. I wont deny that Polycarb shells are much better than they were in the past. but quite simply saying that a helmet that costs £150 compared to a more premium one at £500 is no different when it comes to safety however you are correct on the field of extras. Liners, Aero Dynamics, ventilation and even visual design all add to the price. But it also comes down to how you define 'safe'

    • @casualxbobcat8494
      @casualxbobcat8494 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is indeed correct however it still meets that standard. If you just look at the certified standard then you cant really compare the lids properly. There are many functions. No one forces anyone to buy a premium helmet but they are more feature rich and more expensive for a reason. There will always be a purchase premium for a brand name. whether its boots, gloves, jackets or trousers too, doesnt mean they are not that expensive for a certain reason....well, unless its RST, then you just get ripped off.

    One thing bothered me about this video... He tried to use the fact that SS racers all used higher priced helmets... Well of course they do... they are getting paid by the makers of every piece of gear they are wearing (Sponsors)... not only do they get all that gear (Helmet included) for free... but they get paid to wear it because every dumb schmuck out there that is a SS racer wannabe will go out and buy the same helmet. Its a sales pitch.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think you missed the point. Yes, it's an opportunity for a manufacturer to showcase their best gear. But what happens to a companies reputation if their helmet has a high fail rate. Look at Jorge Lorenzo. He had so many problems with HJC helmets failing to survive a single race that he eventually had to switch to another brand. And no team is going to leave anything up to chance. There is far more to be lost with an injury or a lost championship than there is to be gained from a moderately sized (comparatively) endorsement paycheck.

      Professional riders don't just take any old helmet because it's free. They are still very particular to make sure it is safe and comfortable. They aren't going to risk losing a race and/or getting injured just for a free $500 they could easily afford anyway.
