I've never been a fan of the "subject to parents" sort of thing. I know its not biblical, but children should be taught that their own body and self is subject to themselves because the "subject to" in regards to body opens up the idea that the kids are supposed to accept abuse emotionally and physically.
In fact the word ''gypsy'' comes from the word ''egyptian''. They are not of egyptian origin or heritage. Later on, the word gypsy was used as an insult and very pejoratively in many parts of the Mediterranean and the Balkans. They came from India. So, it is not PC to call them by their name, which is ''Roma''/Romani, but it is just a matter of respecting the facts. It is a right of every people to be called as it wishes, not as other pejoratively want to call this people.
Excuse me, but that word has always been offensive. Please keep in mind that the Romani are one of the least tolerated, most discriminated against and persecuted minorities in the world. Romani is not a PC term either; it's the proper name for this group of people and it's been around longer than the United States has, and since there has been more than one attempt (most recently the nazis) to exterminate these people, in Christ's name I ask you to consider your words and how they impact others rather than dismissing it as PC when other folks tell us they don't like us calling them certain things or advancing negative stereotypes about them like dishonesty or a proclivity for theft. I'm not breaking your stones or trying to be a jerk, but I wouldn't want to be called a slur and I don't think you would like it either. Therefore, as Christ taught us, we need to be better, and we do that by treating others as we would like to be treated. If I've offended, I ask your forgiveness, but I had to call it out.
The martyrs did not deem that the authorities had a right to put them to torture and death. They had not done anything worthy of death (Which St Paul said of himself). Submission to authority does not require that one cooperate with an evil being done, to oneself or others. As with St Paul and others in Scripture, it is legitimate to evade those who are seeking to destroy one. The Saviour counselled the faithful to flee from Jerusalem when they saw the Roman "authorities" were about to destroy it. A wife is not required to submit to any abuse her husband might wish to inflict on her, nor a citizen to submit to any evil a state might wish to inflict on himself and his family. The authorities are legitimate only when upholding God's righteousness in keeping down crime and promoting the welfare of the populace. They lose legitimacy when they seek to impose evil. Was not Dietrich Bonhoeffer one of your church tradition?
p.s. And what if one of your congregation is in a medical profession and the authorities require that they should participate in abortion? Submission would be wrong. And what if te authorities want to force a dubious medical experiment on you and your family?
But take heart; I have overcome the world. We may think we are on the earth, but we are not of the earth. Jesus showed how to overcome it and not be part of it but be spirit and not bodies. He did that with the Resurrection and with miracles. These and greater things shall YOU do. Judge not by appearance but judge by righteous judgment. Metanoia takes us to reality in which we are still innocent spirit instead sinful bodies. Matt 12.7 If you had known what these words mean, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” you would not have condemned the innocent.
Would you be able to cite your sources for what you accuse the Gnostics of believing? I have never seen that in any of their writings or discussions. Perhaps there may have been an unknown fringe sect that believed the radical things you said, but it would be like saying all Christian denominations now approve of abortion and gay marriage, which everyone knows is not true. Please be fair and accurate. Thank you so much, and may you receive many blessings.
If you think you are under the order of a god that wants sacrifice you will want others to do the same. Not only that, but you will want them to make up for what they have caused you to do because you have not forgiven them for what you think they have done to you. Their sacrifice seems to let you off the hook just like Jesus' sacrifice seems to get us off that hook of punishment by God. It doesn't. Only forgiveness eradicates the hook completely. Matt 12.7 If you had known what these words mean, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” you would not have condemned the innocent. Consider yourself corrected for convicting a people for being pick-pockets. And as Ram Dass once said, quoting one of his teachings, “If a pickpocket stands in a crowd of saints, all he would see is their pockets." We see in others what we expect to see and if they are unforgiven we will see guilt. Submit to your true master/ teacher. The Holy Spirit has no controversial message and you will only hear what God has created. God didn't create evil. We made it up when we left God and put ourselves under our own inheritance thinking we are bodies not Spirit. Bodies seem to create bodies. They don't create Spirit, God does. Bodies seem to do evil, but that world of the body we made up. Forgiveness ends it. Jesus became a man? "I am with you always."...Do you carry around his body wherever you go.? Christ is mind. There is but one mind. John 17.20-23.
While Gnosticism is actually much older than Christianity, it has been a thorn in its side since the beginning. Some of the earliest complaints about Christianity accused Christians of consuming children through cannibalism by deliberately confusing the meaning and means of the holy communion. So from the founding of the official Roman Church and before, Christianity has been confronted with the issue of Gnosticism, but particularly in the form of Arius, a wayward priest in the sixth century. It was this crises that caused the first ecumenical councils which led to the formulation of the Nicene Creed which affirms that this universe is of God, the real God above all others and maker of the heavens and the earth. Gnosticism argues that we live in a false existence created by a false God, and that to return to the true God we must die and exit this existence, often interpreted as suicide by Gnostic groups, as most recently evidenced by the Heaven's Gate group in California. Denial by the Gnostics of the institution of marriage as a spiritual institution would therefore make sense. It is, from my understanding, the Christian belief that marriage was created and blessed by God is a form of ark and covenant. It is a haven, place of safety, a refuge for a man and woman, in union, to weather the storms of life which is created by a solemn vow of union of trust and support. Submission, as discussed in the bible, seems to be more about surrendering to the duties of marriage in recognition of the value and potential reward of such union in terms of life and wealth. In practical terms it creates a bedrock to build a family; which is the cornerstone of religious belief, to be fruitful and to multiply. In submitting to your spouse you are not surrendering yourself and your identity, you are creating a new identity, that of being a family, and striving towards a selflessness in caring for each other which is an ideal not a burden. Gnosticism fails to recognize that while there is much darkness in life there is also much light, does the sun not shine upon us all? It is easy to forget that the Holy Spirit is not just present with God, but is in fact present in our everyday lives. It isn’t just some ephemeral force that is conveyed through magical electricity, it is just as real as bread. When we attend religious activities we are sharing in that common spirit, through our readings, our traditions, and our prayers we are literally of the living spirit. A spirit that is more than hope and promise, it is the light we can turn to in the darkness of uncertainty and it is the proof of the goodness and eternity of this reality. A selflessness that not only sustains the marriage but prepares the way for parenthood.
