  • This Is How You Develop Great Defense in Boxing. Tom Yankello of the @WorldClassBoxingChannel presents to you a defensive counterpunch drill that incorporates weaves, rolls, and slips. Tom first teaches you how to duck and feel. He first has the boxer weave under the right hand with chin down and bending at the waist. This is a strategy that the famous Bruce Lee had mastered. Tom explains in depth how to perform this while boxing.
Tom then proceeds into the drill that starts with the boxer doing two weaves, shoulder roll the right hand, come back with a right hand, left hook, then roll opponent's hook and slip another right hand, weave another hook, and then come back with a right hand and a hook.
    0:00 Introduction
0:18 Greatness is in the details
0:41 Bruce Lee. It's about "feel"
    1:21 Weaving Under the Punch
    2:31 How to Bend

After all these years coaches always say don't bend at the waist. And my defense was lacking. This makes so much more sense. Why have I never been taught this

I used to get screamed at for weaving low like that, but I got framed and lit up when I did it the "right" way. I decided being yelled at was better than getting a headache.

People who say that "he is not looking at the target" are complete ignorants (and sadly boxing trainers are becoming more & more ignorant about what coach Tom is explaining).
We just need to watch Joe Frazier, Archie Moore & all the old school fighters which used with great success what coach Tom is sharing here.
Roberto Durán & Julio César Chavéz were amazing doing this too.
Thank a lot for sharing your wisdom!!

1:49 some very good point. I use a stiff lead arm (like a long guard) to frame a lot especially on smaller opponents which are rushing into me.
Not sure if I would do this weaving in kickboxing though. Danger of getting caught with a knee or highkick seems too great for me. But for boxing great detail.

    0:01 Defensive counter punch drill
    (weaves / rolls /slips )
    0:15 time stamps
0:20 details what important /this is where greatness is
0:40 this weave without look at target (its about feeel)
    Lost art duck and weave
1:24 weaves this way makes me alot harder target
Then weaving with head up (this way he can't still get me punch me /or stop me )
Put head down he can't do that
2:25 I get closer like that /and put my hand on him
2:35 Iam not bend at waist and get/taking head /chin past front foot (past knee is ok for this drill ) /
And my hips not under me
2:48 I bend at waist (head getting past front knee /but head and chin not gettin past front foot )
3:10 weave the other way (head up ) I can still get hit with shots
I have to get down lower / where I can't punch back from there
Iam stressing quads /tight up hip flexers /can't punch
3:37weaving other way I don't put stress in my quads
(just weave and bend the waist /without stress quads ) /not the knee bend weave
3:55 now I am in position to punch back /becz its hip torque
    4:00 different punches to throw
    4:20 or gets an angle
    5:03 2 weaves /shoulder roll
    Rt hand lft hook
Roll hook slip rt hand /weave hook / rt hand hook
5:48 so come back with rt hand hook
    Both times
    5:55 again
6:48 relax no tension / be like water
    Be soft /extend ur shots
7:15 get shoulder up little higher on shoulder roll
7:35 repetion repetion /master technique and all little details
7:45 weave under over hnd rt / rt hook /strgth rt hand
7:55 weave other way /(head up still can get hit ) /he cant counter back ...
8:30 shoulder roll pick shoulder up little more
8:45 roll with hook /not open up too much to get hit wirh rt hand
I got little bit weight on front leg to come back with hook / or sit down on roll and throw rt hand
So in position to do both
9:15 I can add lft hook to body /head too / after slip rt hand
9:25 or just body lft hook
9:35 or body lft hook /then when weaving after lft hook / throw lft body shot on the way weaving
10:02 so keep on adding stuff /be creative /keep on puttin stuff together
Its all about technique of it /when I get it down I am going to keep on being able to flow the next move
Without gettin all thrown off and havin to get reset
10:18 practice it / look at all details over over again (watch way he bend his waist /watch feet not too wide or too close )
    10:30 Strive for perfect
Continue on work on stance every day
Basics basics basics /( just becz its basic dosnt mean its easy )

Love the knowledge should you duck at the waist and weave on the inside but if your farther away can you bend at the knees or is that fundamentaly wrong I'll bend at the knees to slip sometimes but I've definitely seen Tyson do that. Idn great video also I dig what you said about Qawi and Frazier they definitely bobbed at the waist.

i was thinking the same thing ted. i know for a fact as well that tyson in his prime form would do so since i have seen it on jkd tyson channel. parnell whitaker was another. i think the way to go is a hybrid between the two so you can drive up with the back and the legs. One thing to notice is that this is not advice from a trainer nor his student that have tyson legs to draw upon for power. interestingly jack dempsey taught the wait bend as shown in his book.
