For those curious. IFAK is an Individual First Aid Kit issued to troops and contains torniquets, gauze, sterile burn dressing, bandages (non stick latex free adhesive), latex gloves, adhesive bandages, and water purifying tablets.
They told us it was improved first aid kit, had alot of stuff in there to emergency treat damn near anything from broken bones, bullet holes to deflated lungs, thankfully the only thing i ever needed out of mine was some gauze and the 2 tourniquets

As someone who is in the service, hearing someone say "My IFAK's gone", over the radio...you can feel your stomach drop. Now, I love Black Mesa, and while HECU weren't exactly the best guys, there were some who didn't follow orders and were against killing civies. They were just Marines thrown in a situation they couldn't possibly fathom until it was too late.
Bear in mind that the more questionable side of their orders probably sprung up from the sheer lack of context the government had on what caused shit to hit the fan. For all the Marines knew, Black Mesa could have summoned an alien invasion on purpose.

Sure the HECU were enemies for Gordon and surely had some questionable orders, but from their perspective they were only doing their job in trying to contain the whole situation whether they were morally right or not, something needed to be done one way or another. The scientists aren't the good guys, they were given a much more friendly role late in development, but the experiments they run are the type of shit that literally ended human civilization. They also test weapons on captured alien wildlife and Questionable Ethics is called that for a reason. The fact that Gordon is wholly concerned with his own survival and leaves behind every person he meets actually makes more sense than him trying to save them. The HECU are going in with orders to capture, interrogate and execute anybody involved with the sudden alien invasion happening so they don't have room to pull any punches. If they fail, and they did, that means the world is done and dusted. Then some man in a magical orange suit comes running through and wipes entire squads of men out with ease, obviously that guy might know how to fix all this, so they focus on him and the two that throw him into the trash compactor end any chance the military had of figuring out what to do. It's not like it would have made a difference since the Nihilanth was the only reason the Combine hadn't shown up yet and the only way to stop the current alien invasion was to blow up his brain crystal, letting the even worse guys in. At least that was the original lore, they might have retconned stuff so idk.

everytime i heard that audio at the overran HECU underground camp i always just imagined that the bleeding soldier was somewhere nearby in a room or 2 that we can't access.

That's where you can hear the dialogue. Its also before the part where you have to run away from a Gargantuar

This interaction is one of my favorites in the whole game; there's something so deeply emotional about it. Hearing a dying man calling for help, knowing full well that nothing can be done to save him. By the end, he's lost all hope and spends what few seconds he has left being conscious to accept that before his body shuts down. The sound of the sergeant trying to help this dying man save himself only to be greeted by silence must've been beyond heartbreaking. The only thing that saves him from thinking about how he just heard the last words of one of his fellow marines is the chaos that breaks out behind him as his own soldiers are attacked by Xenian forces. Out of every interaction, every conversation, and every scripted scene, nothing sells me the hopeless despair of the HECU's crumbling control over Black Mesa more than this short conversation between two doomed marines.
Would explain the fact that he doesn' respond after that ,i mean ,people can be calm as fuck in shock before dying ...Traumatic things make people sometime react like it's not that bad..Self defense from the brain u know.
I think my favorite detail about this- and there’s a lot of details about this I like- is that he slumps down next to a “wet floor” sign. I’m a sucker for dramatic irony, I guess.
I always imagined it where the soldier had lost most of his leg. The fact you couldn't see it and was only left to imagine how bad the wound was made it horrifying. But this hit hard in an even sadder way. Well done!
The look on his face during "my Ifaks gone" really adds to the line delivery. Like he's just remembered it's still outside and realized he's going to die

Really great animation, but if there were one thing for me to note, bleeding out is more like fading into sleep, slowly sliding into the death pose, rather than falling into it like you got shot. Cool stuff!
I know im late but im glad you made an animation for this because recently I’ve been playing a lot of black mesa and I’ve also heard some of these lines in game. So it’s nice to see an animation depicting what happened!

I wonder if any HECU soldiers that survived black mesa survived the 7 hour war and till the events of half life 2, would be an interesting turn of fate if some did and ended up being part of the resistance fighting alongside freeman though they would probably get inducted to the combine more likely.

The pit worm and the gene worm were the worst of it, too. Besides the shock troopers and, of course, the alien grunts. Shepherd saw and lived through it all. Nostalgia. Both the HECU grunts and the Black Ops forces that followed saw, I would say, some of the most vile and gruesome things when they responded to the Resonance Cascade here at BMRF. 😱☠️☣️☢️

this is why i love black mesa's representation of the HECU. while the HECU losing was implied in half life one, they didnt have as many small interactions like this, where you can hear just how badly the military is fucked. like hearing about that one Vtol that was trying to evac wounded but was being swamped by xen aliens calling for anyone who could help over the radio

We also have to remember that at this point around 40% were dead or wounded with a large chunk of the survivors getting left behind.

The pit worm and the gene worm were the worst of it, too. Besides the shock troopers and, of course, the alien grunts. Shepherd saw and lived through it all. Nostalgia. Both the HECU grunts and the Black Ops forces that followed saw, I would say, some of the most vile and gruesome things when they responded to the Resonance Cascade here at BMRF. 😱☠️☣️☢️

this is why i love black mesa's representation of the HECU. while the HECU losing was implied in half life one, they didnt have as many small interactions like this, where you can hear just how badly the military is fucked. like hearing about that one Vtol that was trying to evac wounded but was being swamped by xen aliens calling for anyone who could help over the radio
