  • Pandit Uday Bhawalkar sings Raag Bhinna Shadaj at 15th Annual Sangeet Mahotsav in Delhi.
Uday Bhawalkar is a standard bearer for Dhrupad, and a strong force in its growing recognition and popularity. Uday believes that when immersed in the note and raga, the self disappears and music takes on its own existence; the principle of ‘darshan’. These values are helping him on the path of devotion to Dhrupad.Dhrupad is one of the oldest forms of North Indian classical music and Uday maintains its majesty and subtle nuances. Dhrupad is a living and evolving classical music tradition. Uday has developed a unique style deeply embedded in raga ras and bhaav.
Bhinna Shadaj or Hindol is a Hindustani classical raga. The raga emerges from Kalyan thaat. It is an ancient raga associated with the spring season. Although a Hindustani classical raga is supposed to have at least five notes in both arohana (ascent) and avarohana (descent), Hindol is an exception. It has only four notes in the arohana, and five in the avarohana. Re and Pa are excluded completely. The only Teevra note used is Ma (henceforth represented by Ma#). All other swaras are shuddha.
Arohana: Sa Ga Ma# Dha Sa.
Avarohana: Sa Ni Dha Ma# Ga Sa.
Pakad: Sa Ga Ma# Dha, Sa Sa Dha Sa Dha Ma# Dha.
The vadi swara is Dha, and the samvadi is Ga.
The raga has Teevra Madhyam at its heart, and revolves around that note, resting on Dha or Ga. A prominent movement in Hindol is the gamak, heavy and forceful oscillations particularly using Ma# and Dha. The Ni in the avarohana is very weak, and in most compositions it is used obliquely or often entirely avoided. Mostly pure classical genre of music like Khayals or Dhamars are composed in this raga.

bhinna shadaj and hindol are different ragas. bhinna shadaj is also called kaushikdhwani or hindoli, hindol however is different, containing teevr madhyam where bhinna shadaj has shuddh madhyam.

The information you are giving here is not correct. Bhinna Shadaj and Hindol are indeed different ragas. The scale of Bhinna Shadja is: Sa Ga ma Dha Ni Sa' / Sa' Ni Dha ma Ga Sa. No tivra Ma. Udayji clearly sings the scale given here (where, in fact, shuddha ma (being the vadi and having Sa as a dominant and Ni as a leading tone) acts like a kind of "second Sa", an important resting point of the scale.
