    I don't claim to be an expert listener of our classical music, but of late I've developed an insatiable appetite for Hindustani classical music. Bhairav, with its heavy, serene aura, comes to me as a personification of Mahadev's meditative side. And without any disrespect to any Khayal vocalist, I feel like this rendition reached closer to the rasa of Bhairav than any of the Khayals that I've heard. I'm forever grateful to the channel for having shared such invaluable rendition on a public platform. God bless this music!

      There are not too many Dhrupad singers, Khayal singers are plentiful. Uday Bawalkar ji is the probably the only leading exponent of Dhrupad, there were initially 4 Gharanas in Dhupad, out of whih only one Dagar Bani survives to this date, others have become extinct. You are right, Dhrupad is much more divine and emotional, than Khayal because, Dhurpad is made for singing in Devotion to Gods, whereas Khayal evolved in Mughal Courts for purpose of entertainment. There should be more promotion of Dhrupad, but very very few exponents of this form of music

      Dhrupad comes across as somber and serious, and is daunting for most people until they have enough of an inculcation in Hindustani classical music, IMO. But here's hoping Dhrupad's resurgence continues ...... it seems to have a small but avid following in many countries.

The taan like singing with the syllables mesmerized me.. Totally different from Khayal.. The bhaav(mood) of Raag clearly depicted! Pranaam.. would continue listening Dhrupad.

      Some ragas just simply suit the dhrupadiya style. Bhairav is a prime example.
      Malkauns also goes very well in the dhrupadiya style.
      It's just that the Kalyan, Khamaj, Bilawal thaat ragas don't sound as fluent and exciting in dhrupadiya style.

      @@DC-zi6se Yes, correctly said. Now I am a regular dhrupad listener and my khayal seems to be influenced with the dhrupad I listen to. The sounds of Rudra veena by Asad ali khan saheb ji hypnotises me! Indian music is amazing and so beautiful that I can't write it down.
      And the point regarding raags you mentioned is very accurate. Bhairav, Malkauns, Multani, Shree, Poorvi, Darbari, Miyan malhar and so many raags having a serious nature struggle a bit in khyal.. these raags find complete expression only in dhrupad.

      The only Khayal artist I think, who truly united (or at least seemed to have) Khayal and Dhrupad was Ustad Amir Khan, ever since he died, vocal gymnastics has taken over khayal and dhrupad has lost popularity.
      Ustad Amir Khan is the only exception, He had the vocal gymnastics required for Khayal but also had the patience and grandeur of the dhrupadiya style.
      One, more is Ustad Sharafat Hussain Khan, but he is more close to pure dhrupad.

    • @shoonnya
      @shoonnya 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Not sure what you mean by same god etc. Raag has nothing to do with a particular god except for some myths about their origins perhaps. As for prayer for a specific god, any Hindu deity could be prayed with any raag - there are no "rules" about it but may be some popular conventions.
      Now about these two raags. These are in fact two completely different beasts. Almost nothing to do with each other. Both are what are called as "Janak Raag" (lit. generator raag) or "Thaat" (style/template, read Wiki for "Thaat"). The basic set of notes for the two are different, the way they develop ("dynamics") is different and the moods they evoke are also different.
      Both use all the 7 notes in ascending and descending movements. If one is singing in C, then Bhairavi notes will be "C Db Eb F G Ab Bb C" and Bhairav notes will be "C Db E F G Ab B C" with b indicating the "flat" version.
      This makes a world of difference in itself, but their different dynamic makes even bigger difference!

    • @nuadtrainer
      @nuadtrainer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much for your clear answer. I understand now the differense of these 2 raags. Yes, nothing to do with the gods. Just 2 different ragas. Thank you for showing me precisely how different they are. This is indeed very kind of you because I am a pure ignorant but I appreciate a lot.

      Your kind information will help me to adjust the tanpura. I am a retired old man. During years I used to listen for hours to Ustad Hussain Sayeedudin Dagar. I love his Rag Bhairavi, even it seems impossible for me to chant with him. As I found Uday by hazard looking for Daggar's Bhairavi, I started to love Uday'Bhairav until I spend hours trying to imitate him step by step, chanting with him for hours until my voice changes as well as my moods. This my best prayer to God . I also believe that God does n't care of the name we use . All my gratitude to all those who keep the true Spirit of India ever alive.

    To me as a layman it seems to be a more fundamental form of music which is also enjoyable like khayal gayaki. It perhaps brings out the form of the raga in a better way.

      Dhrupad focuses on purity and divinity in the performance, while khayal focuses on entertainment while singing. Very few khayal singers focus on divinity. Being a khayal student, I was also running after crisp taans for entertainment, but now I love to listen dhrupad! Dhrupad is the ultimate music!

      What my gurus call margi sangeet. If the voice is produced in synchrony with tanpura with proper learning of voice culture and movement of prana, a spiritual connection can be realized. That’s what I learnt from my gurus, the Gundecha Brothers!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

    Dear Swami: good to wish but world is very big and time eternal, human creation endless. In this vastness, such lofty wishes at a personal level may feel possible but humanity wont have any use for this or any other for that matter. This fact does not diminish this particular rendition or all of music! Enjoy for what it is now. Next moment is neti neti neti.

    My favourite reindition of this song is Sayeedudin Dagar then Bhawalkar ji powerful version & a wonderful Thumri Singer has sung this as well-Shubhra Guha. We are so blessed, so much of choice and interpretation. Why go looking for the purity of roots? It will reach the great lord Shiva himself & Pashupati Mahadeva had indigenous roots- before any of these mainstream religions came. If you heard the elder Dagars you could feel them steeped in Bhakti..Bhakti may have seeds in religion but flowers into greater humanity...

    I have noticed something which wasn't there earlier. The pakhawaj player starts playing before the composition begins. I think it's a new development. I saw it recently at sawai gandharwa music festival at Pune where Vijay ghate started playing the tabla before Pandit hariprasad chourasia had finished the jhala
