The story behind this song
They say that Ibrahim Naji " the poet " loved his neighbor’s daughter , when he was 16 yo, He traveled to study medicine and after studying for years he came back to marry the neighbor’s daughter but unfortunately She went on with her life and got married, but like any pure love, Ibrahim couldn't forget the love that was between them.
Almost 15 years later, after midnight, he found a man in his mid-forties crying out at his door step to save his wife, who was in a state of troubled labour. So he went with the man to his house, and the wife had a face cover and she was in a very dangerous condition, while trying to save her suddenly She suffered a shortness of breath, so “Naji” asked them to remove the cover so that she could breathe, and the shock was that the love of his life was the one giving birth in front of him !!! - “Naji”, although he was in his mid-forties, was full of emotions , so he broke down in tears as he completed the birth process, amid the astonishment of those present. He returned home before dawn, and at the door of his house he sat and wrote “Al-Atlal.” " the Ruins "
He started it with (O my heart, don't ask where love has gone ) and ended it with,(Oh my love, everything is already written .. we are not created in misery by our hands. Perhaps our fates will unite us one day after the scarcity of seeing each other"
Umm Kalthoum did not just have a strong voice, but also a very strong and dominant personality. She was esteemed by all people (when I say all I mean it). She was the idol of all Arabs. In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, 100 million Arabs used to sit down next to their radios on the first Thursday of every month at 9 pm. Umm Kalthoum used to stage a concert on a monthly basis on every first Thursday of each month except August, September, October, and November. In these months, she took a four month vacation to rest and start preparing for the new season which always started on the first Thursday of December. During her first concert of each new season (on the first Thursday of December), she used to sing one new song which she used to keep on singing during the remainder of the season’s concerts (every first Thursday of January, February, March, April, May, June, and July). A French female journalist visited Baghdad in 1958. She was surprised by how lively the city is and how the Iraqi streets stay awake until after midnight. However, on a certain day during her visit to Baghdad, she was dumbfounded that at before 8 pm, all Iraqi streets were empty. On the day after, she asked someone about the reason, she was told that the day before was the first Thursday of the month, so Umm Kalthoum’s day. She was even heard, not merely by the ordinary middle and low classes (which are the dominant classes in the Arab world), but also the very rich, and even the presidents, kings, and princes of the Arab countries. They admired her very much. She was President Abdel Nasser’s favorite singer to the extent that he was paying obeisance to her and esteeming her talent, so that she started to be considered as Egypt’s first lady, especially that President Nasser’s consort did not have a considerable social role which Umm Kalthoum played instead. It was only when President Sadat came to power in 1970, when his consort Jehan Sadat emerged as a dominant female figure and wanted to prove herself as Egypt’s first lady, hence, both Umm Kalthoum and Jehan Sadat were competing over power and influence. But Umm Kalthoum was beloved by 100 million Arabs. Nevertheless, President Sadat himself was in love with Umm Kalthoum’s art and used to attend her concerts during Nasser’s era. Umm Kalthoum was at the time of her rivalry with Jehan Sadat almost 72 years old, whereas the latter was only 40 years old. Umm Kalthoum’s funeral is considered the 8th biggest funeral in history, in which 5 million people participated. Her funeral was not a normal funeral, but rather a military funeral usually held merely for leaders and military high-ranking officials. Even those people who did not walk in her funeral were watching from their balconies, crying, and even millions of Arabs kept on wearing black mourning clothes some days after her death. She was not a normal singer, she was beloved by all Arabs as if she were a very close family member.
Umm Kalthoum’s strong personality manifested itself vividly through many occasions. For instance, in the late 1940s, she was doing the final rehearsal for a new religious song on stage (she always did final rehearsals at the same day of her concert, but in the morning and on the same stage she was supposed to sing on in the evening). During her final rehearsal of that specific religious song, a delegate was sent from the palace telling her that the king was upset because of her new song. The king was disappointed because one verse of the song lauded socialism and considered Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) as a socialist because of his fraternity policies after his immigration from Makkah. Egypt was at the time a capitalist country. So, the palace’s delegate told her the verse of socialism has to be canceled. She said she will either sing the entire song as it is without canceling one word of it or no single word of it. She ordered the musicians to keep up their rehearsals until she comes back. She left and paid a visit to the palace and told them about the situation and that would not sing the entire song, unless she is allowed to sing it entirely. If she had not sung the entire song, this might have caused a trouble because millions of Arabs were waiting for her new song on fire. Eventually, the palace let it go and allowed her to sing it without canceling one word of it.

Originally I am from India but for the past 20 years, I am now Canadian. I listened to this particular song in 1976 when I was only 15 years. I can sing the whole song in its Arabic version. I know every detail of this song. This particular song happened to be one of the greatest songs of this great singer. The critiques have concluded that her greatest song ever happens to be the Rabaiyaat AL-Khayaam, which she sings somewhere in the mid-1940s. I first time listened to that song in 1975.
in Arabic language there is no such thing as an exact synonym, so even though Kalb and Fuoad mean Heart but there is little differences, same as hob and hwa both means love but love has many degrees and hwa is one of these degrees which means "Self Inclination" and it's usually used in reprehensible love. you can search for these differences in google for more info you want.

@@IJayReaction Fouad is a stronger word than Qalb. It is usually associated with broken heart. Many men have this name (Fouad) but none is called (Qalb).
In Quran, both words are used. when the disbelievers didn’t believe that Muhammad PBUH traveled to Jerusalem in one night. Allah revealed in one verse that the prophet’s heart (Fouad) didn’t lie at what it [Fouad] saw, which means you sometimes dont believe what your eyes saw. But when your heart sees it too then it is real and you are most certain of what you saw.
Fouad is like more the emotional part of the heart it shows the strength of feelings faith believes etc heart can be the organ it self

A very important note: when Umm Kalthoum was telling her lover: Free me, she did not mean it physically in the sense of that her lover is imprisoning her physically. She finds herself as her lover’s captive (she was captivated by him and she cannot get rid of her longing for him after they left each other). So, she finds herself imprisoned by her love to him. She cannot live after they left each other because her longing for him and her love are still the same, but she is now without him, so she is being tortured emotionally because she is not able to get rid of her love to him. So she is telling him to free her of her love to him. She does not have anything more. She is totally destroyed. A very meaningful, heart-touching, realistic, expressive part in terms of the music, the lyrics, and the performance of the legend.

This song was written out of a heart breaking story happened to the poet Ibrahim Nagy himself who happens to be a doctor at the same time.
The story is a bout a woman he loved then he had to travel for a long time then returns looking for her but to no avail.
Then one day his neighbor calls him for an emergency in his house, his wife was putting a baby, so the doctor rushed to his neighbor’s house to find his old love he had been looking for in the bed and he has to help her delivering her baby and save her life.
Ibrahim Nagy saved her life and returned home to write one of the eternal and most beautiful poems of all time.
Then the best composer of classic Arabic music of all time Ryad Al Sonbatty turned it into the most beautiful piece of music for the best performer who ever lived to sing on stage.

It's sung by Nagat al-Saghira, known as the Violin of the Arabs for her unique voice. I also recommend you read the translation of the song, as it tells a story, bit the translation doesn't do it justice. Its from the womans perspective, describing that her love for him makes her stay up at night, and how she doesnt think its fair that his eyes are indulging in sleep while shes wide awake thinking of him and so on. Of course I would recommend watching a concert version since you get to see her sing and see the audiences reactions (plus this is very high quality, its a bit newer, but its a classic). L'arabe comme tu le sais est une langue subtile et riche de nuances, pour encore répondre à ta question (car j'ai lu les réponses qui t'ont été données et je voulais rajouté un detail) sur le mot : Qalb, est la partie la plus excentrée ce qu'en anglais on nomme coeur (soit l'organe) mais en arabe il y a des enveloppe plus profonde on dit qu'il y en aurait 7. Fouad "فؤاد" has the same meaning of "قلب" both means heart or thoughts, those four terms are often exchangable in arabic, even in Quran as well.
Btw, there is a famous cardiology hospital in Egypt with the name of "دار الفؤاد".
Oh, in Egypt (not in Arabic, its only Egyptian issue)we never pronounce letters which you have to stick your tounge to the upper teeth like "ث, ذ, ظ" we keep it simple and flow. this is whywe say Um Kolsom or Soma as a nickname.
also we dont pronounce "ج" like J, we keep it simple and delicate as "G in good" the same with "ص, ض, ط"

٥- pericardium: the place of the umbilical .

About the microphone ... there is a reasonable incident for that. The first time Oum Kolthum stood before a mic. was in the Egypt Official Broadcasting as soon as she had started to sing ... the mic went off immediately. They discovered that her voice was too powerful that it burnt the mic. From that day on, Oum Kolthum never stood before a mic., instead the mic always hanged down from upward ... that is why you can't see the mic
