- Historicon 2022 was held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania this July 21-24 and Little Wars TV was there to run games, play games, buy toys, and enjoy ourselves! Historicon is the largest historical miniature event in the USA and we filmed games throughout the weekend to bring you today's recap. There were hundreds of games on display and in this video we'll give you a brief look at some favorites. We wish we could showcase ALL the games, so our apologies for the numerous awesome tables we weren't able to feature in this brief recap. Our club truly had a fantastic time hosting games and meeting friends old and new. We can't wait to return to Historicon 2023 at this awesome venue in the new Marriott and downtown Lancaster convention center.

Best way I can describe the vibe and people who attend Historicon is me and my 2 friends had a opening and went down and got tickets for a game called Take the Bridge it was a 4 player game, but when we finally arrived at the slotted time it turned out it was accidently overbooked and four guys who where experienced players of the rule set where already there since they signed up online. Instead of saying sorry guys tough luck they all got up and said they would rather have beginners play and learn and instead of playing they would help us with the rules. It was a blast this weekend and I encourage anyone thinking of going to make the trip!
That's awesome to hear and exactly what we would hope veteran players would do to welcome newer guys. So glad to hear you had a good experience at the show. It's always a fun weekend.

13:35 Y'know, it's really nice to see a couple that's willing to try out their partner's hobbies, doesn't happen enough IME and "wargaming widows/widowers" always make me feel kind of sad for both folks involved. Hopefully he's similarly open to giving whatever she's into a shot.

While my wife has no interest in wargaming, she still comes along, she is into wool, so she knits, and explores whatever city and/or area we are in, going to museums and such. Then we meet for dinner :)
Truth be told, I like antiquing. I have put to table many a purchase from antique and flea markets that have gotten the "ouss and aahhs" from the guys at my gameing group.
Love it, I can't even figure out what to comment on first. Loved that there were MULTIPLE 3mm games there, the Have Gun Will Travel, Deadman's Hand and Chicago Way tables, or hearing from the kids and volunteers.
That Dead Man’s Hand table looked incredible. Great summary, thanks guys. 👍
The level of painting and modelling on display in that Dead Man's Hand game was some of the best I've ever seen. It was top, top notch stuff.

@@LittleWarsTV A question from a fantasy/sf wargamer - why do these historical figures so often have derpy faces and cartoony proportions, as if they were all Good Soldiers Svejks wearing clothes two sizes too large? For me it takes a lot away from the epic spactacle of a fully painted army doing battle, when they all look like runaways from Looney Tunes. Is there a reason behind this?

I had the opportunity to attend and play some games. I'm looking forward to other HMGS conventions. I had the pleasure of meeting Greg (I hate when Navy plays Notre Dame), Josh, Tony (he drinks Bourbon not scotch), and Mark from Mark's Game Room. I'm looking forward to more excellent content and I hope to meet more Little Wars celebrities at future conventions.
I was there on Saturday. Lots of fun. I bought some old miniatures in the blisters and found the original sculptor at the con. He signed them for me. This was my first con. I am planning to go to Fall-in.

Props to El Guapo Josh on winning an award! I've gotta make it to Historicon sometime. Glad to see things back in full force after two years of being away.
He did a great table for Salerno and lots of folks stopped to ask about the techniques used. Because it was really just a single piece of cheap felt that can be rolled up and stored easily, but Josh dressed it up with lots of custom features.
You owe it to yourself to make the pilgrimage
I love that Josh is still known as El Guapo. He got that nickname playing the Spanish in our Old Trousers Napoleonic campaign from the early 2000s...

Awesome video. Clash of Spears/Katanas is an amazing game with a load of innovative features. Francisco is an awesome guy as well! He was a local in Austin, TX where he first started developing the game.

Great video! I went to one these Historicons in Gettysburg approx 30-35 years ago, and it was significantly smaller and in a smaller hotel venue. There were a couple of really impressive tables, including a massive ACW board with hexagonal terrain pieces - might have been Antietam. But overall, not nearly the scope of what you guys had this year. I know everyone says the hobby is shrinking, and that may or may not be true based on numbers of participants, but I think there seem to be a lot more people now who have the time and inclination to devote the many of hundreds of hours it takes to put together such great terrain tables. Maybe because so many of the boomers who got into the hobby 40-50 years ago are now retired with a lot of time on their hands. I'm still working on the 15mm ACW armies I started on 30 years ago and have only worked on in fits and starts. Now that I'm retired I made more progress in the last year than the previous 30 put together. At this rate, by the time I die I'll have two playable armies!
I'm thrilled that our Burnside's Bridge game got a spotlight at the start of the video, but my longtime friend, and co-GM John Wilk should receive an equal share of the credit!

What a visual treat for someone who began wargaming with Marx's Alamo & ACW playsets & later Airfix, Matchbox, etc.

Time Bandits is cult quality lampoon for people who really like history and the meaning of all things Bill and Ted really didn't provide.
This is a grail convention for me. Some year I'll make the pilgrimage. Happily, our local convention, Recruits, is back on this year. If you are in the Kansas City area on the weekend of September 23rd, drop by.

This was my first Historicon and getting to play in two of Josh's Salerno games was the highlight of the Con for me. And yes, even my wife is looking forward to next year.

Nice report. I wish I could have gone. One day I will make it to Hostoricon. I’m excited to hear that next week the Punic Wars in Sicily campaign begins. I have been dying to hear about it ever since you first announced it way back when.
Saw the "Kill the President"game run by Mike Demena &Co at our local convention(Daycon) here in Dayton,Ohio a couple weeks back. Everybody had fun there to😁
I found that so interesting, I think I'll watch it again! 😄
[ p.s. To be fair, I was also slightly distracted the first time around on recognising the venue - I visited some years back to use the Rest Room! (I know; too much info) 😂 Also, weird for me to see Paestum featured in the Salerno game - by coincidence, I had the pleasure of walking around the ruins only last month when on vacation! 😯 ]

This looks incredible! What a great venue. I’m making plans to attend next year. Do you think an 8 year old is too young to bring to this? I want to get my son into historical gaming, but not sure whether I should do this one by myself first and give him a couple years to grow into it.
There are definitely some kid-friendly games. Not as many as I'd like to see, but enough you could stay busy if you pre-register for a few. There are some kids at the show, absolutely.
Loved the overview and the channel. Any chance your club could put in a game based on Harry Turtledove's alt US/CS Great War history? Be great to see your take on a blitzkreig campaign across the ACW battlefields or even to see Gen Custer's armoured assaults in WW1.

This is an excellent overview of the convention...love it! I have never been to Historicon and am just a bit trigger shy of how I would go about getting myself there. What would be a nice follow-up video or something through Patreon, would be a video on how to plan, execute and get the most out of a convention like Historicon. Out here in Arizona, options for conventions are limited, and would love to venture out east for the "BIG" one. Thanks again.
Take a week, fly Phoenix to Harrisburg, rent car, spend a day or 2 walking the battlefield at Gettysburg. Drive to Lancaster, park rental, game , eat, drink, say hi to friends at LWTV, take rental back to Harrisburg, fly back to AZ. Note that I may have glossed over some details... I 😉
Just a few--but Tony is right. This is the kind of trip where you can easily cover some famous battlefields like Brandywine, Gettysburg, Antietam, etc.

Decent rules we've been playing during the Plague Years. Mostly 1960-70 Belfast.

Wargames are the best alternative going to digital distractions and the "observer culture'. Learn history, crafts, sportsmanship, play games hands-on and make friends. How could a hobby be better than that?

Man, I miss going to this show. Been decades now, and I don't see it in my future either but that doesn't stop me wishing.
Venue looks much improved from the last time I attended. Guess all the refurbishment and construction was worth it.
Different venue; this isn’t the reconstructed Host. It is the Lancaster Convention Center in downtown Lancaster.
@@robertdean52 Oh, that's why it looks so different and yet so familiar. I've attended shows at the LCC as well in years past. Looks like it got spruced up a bit too.
I did a video walkthrough about 1:00 PM on Saturday and posted it on my channel but missed the Malta game. It must have been tucked away. Definitely could get lost up there. El Guapo's Italian game looked great and he explained several things about it to us so that was much appreciated.
I basically spent the whole time in the tourney room where thankfully the lighting was better. I am surprised you didn't cover any of the tourneys.
The lighting in the main gaming areas could have been better, no doubt! As a club, we aren't really into tournament play, hence the lack of coverage I guess. Nothing wrong with tournaments--they are popular--just not our own interests here.

Ugh I wasn't able to make it this year. Ironically the only convention that I would've been able to make it to was last year and canceled by COVID. I need to get there, I'm going to make sure I have vacation time and put in that I will be out of work that day

I really want to get into this but I don't know what to look for, any tips for rule sets and stuff are welcome. I'm using old maps with homebrew rules and paper squares it's fun but I want something established. Would Bolt Action be a good start.

Looked like a great convention. One year I must head over the pond to one show - so question from a Brit….. if there was one US convention I should visit, which one should it be?
Historicon is the biggest one (every July). After that, Cold Wars and Fall In are probably the next two biggest shows. But all three are focused on historical miniatures. If you're interested in tabletop more generally, Adepticon and GenCon are MASSIVE. Almost too big, frankly. But they are spectacles.
Firelock was mentioned, but it's a shame there were no Blood & Plunder games featured. Always a good-looking game.
I looked for Malta, ended up Cyprus.
I was there are on Saturday and I couldn't find the Malta game. I was very disappointed.
You weren't alone! We had many people ask about it. It was tucked away behind the main gaming room down an unmarked hallway. Somewhat inexplicable and a missed opportunity to showcase a special game.

Some very fun games happening in the HAWKs room this year. I didn't even know they were back there behind Commonwealth until Saturday when someone told me to continue down the hallway! The venue definitely could have benefitted from more signage.
Thought I recognized that face. He's quite the fixture at Historicon.

Historicon is held every summer (there's also a Spring and Fall convention) and it's very welcoming for newcomers! You don't need any experience with a particular game, as the people running them always teach the rules. Great way to try out new rules!
These look so fun. Is there a database or something online that has a list of all wargaming conventions? I feel like it's hard to find them sometimes
If you want to play any time, look up the International Kriegsspiel Society.
Agreed, it's not always easy to find the shows. Here in the US you can go to HMGS or one of their regional chapters for a list of many (but not all) shows in your part of the country.

Can you buy any of these games with troops already painted? Avalon Hill eat your heart out!
You can commission figures to be painted, or buy someone else's old painted figures, but the rules don't usually come with painted figures. It isn't like a board game.

Funny you should mention it. A conversation about some wargame campaign around an "Imagi-nation" Monday before the Con sparked our interest. AK-47 Republic was mentioned & I bought a copy in tje flea market
