Edward VII made sure he had a warm relationship with his children as this was denied him as a child of Victoria and Albert. When he died, George V said "I have lost my best friend and the best of fathers, I never had a cross word with him". Such a shame then that George reverted back to the Hanoverian stereotype where his children were terrified of him and had difficult relations with him.

This is sad. Wallis never wanted to marry Edward. The letters they discovered from Wallis to her husband and those from him to her were heart breaking. Edward had an unhealthy obsession with her. People described it as if he was Posessed. He was scary obsessive. She was still in love with her husband. When she told Edward she didn't want him that he needed to fulfill his duties as King he refused. He told her he would kill himself if she didn't marry him. She felt she had no choice. She didn't want that blood on her hands so she married him and they stayed married till he died. What a price to pay for what was supposed to be a short lived affair.
Yes, thanks to Mr. Al-Fayed who purchased their old house in France and discovered those letters and made them semi-public we now know she wasn't really in love with him. She also described him as being 'child like' rather than acting like an adult. But we MUST acknowledge the truth about her. She wanted to be Queen of England. That was her ultimate goal. She was also an adulterer having cheated on her husband with more than one man before. She was no saint. As for Edward, we now know that the Simpson marriage was a ruse. British intelligence knew that he was a Nazi sympathizer. The people who loved him did not know this but the government didn't want him as King. They saw the trouble brewing with Germany. The denial of the morganatic marriage was just the excuse they needed. They were right too. We now know of his pact with Hitler after the abdication to restore him to the throne if Germany was successful in taking over England. Queen Elizabeth wanted to mend fences after her father died and was going to offer him something in the government. Her ministers advised against it and showed her the secret files. She was horrified.
@@teresaareces4995 that is unfair conclusion about simpson. She was crafted an horribly to hide the fact that edward was a nazi supported. It was the government's move and the other royals that had edward do the abdication instead of letting him be as a nazi supporter and with simpson becoming his queen. The win win situation was not given to the brat edward.
Why do they show an image of Edward VIII when they say 'Foolish Rulers', why does this idea get perpetuated? Surely Edward did the monarchy the greatest favour by abdicating the throne? Wouldn't it have been far worse if Edward had stayed on the throne?
I believe the notion HM Edward VIII would be considered foolish is due to his political leanings and affiliations. If he would have stayed the monarch during World War II this would have been an absolute detriment to the UK.
The thing about Queen Victoria is that she really took her husband's death hard. Never recovered, wore mourning the rest of her life and shirked her duties as queen. Naturally you going to be sad and depressed when your spouse died but she really wallowed in it.

Next to Elizabeth, George VI is my favorite British monarch. He seemed like such a kind man, devoted to his family and country. For someone who didn't want to be king, he did a stellar job. And he had to reign through WWII when London....and even Buckingham Palace...was being bombed!
The irony is that The Church of England opposed the marriage to Wallis Simpson because she was a divorcee. Now then in what circumstances was The Church of England founded in 1533? Was it so Henry VIII could divorce Katherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn?
The exact same thing crossed my mind about the divorce and remarriage of King Charles and how the people and even the Queen did not want Camilla to be called queen. But old Lizzie softened in her 90's and allowed it. But I also think Camilla proved herself and earned the title.
@@taraswartzbaugh9780 Well, I think that is a given! At HER age, if she isn't post menopausal, its one for the Guinness Book! I really think the late Queen may have softened in her old age and realized that they have a really good marriage and they should have been together all along. I think she wanted to make sure THIS one would last and there would be no playing footsie with others like the King's LAST marriage!
it is so hard to imagine what it would feel like, actually feel like, being crowned a queen, knowing that you hold a country & a ppl & in turn they simply adore you, that's both queen elizabeths for me, ❤❤❤❤❤
I will never accept Camilla as no fucking Queen 👑 she is simply Charles'(side bitch) period and queen 👑 Elizabeth's uncle Edward Viii was crucified for attempting the same thing for Wallis Simpson (1936) queen Elizabeth shouldn't have had the power to write a note months before her untimely death (RIP) to say that she approves of the marriage to Camilla and wants her to be queen consort upon her death without having to go through parliament, church, etc like Edward Viii
Those disconcerting kings should have been ashamed of themselves. They behaved like stinkers, they wanted absolute power over the people. This is when the monarchy should have been dissolved permanently. They were absolute devils.
@Colonel Gibbs they changed their name because it was too German and they feared people would attack them due to the whole nazi sympathy. That's why they changed their name to obvious British surname.
Agree, although "Happy Days Are Here Again" used with WWI-era footage was kind of a goof. For Americans, at least, that song is powerfully associated with the year 1932 and Franklin Roosevelt.
Why is it when talking about the abdication ppl refuse to realize that david had no children therefore Elizabeth would have been heir and queen when he passed in the 70s anyways
How did Wallis do the world a favor...and I think it's just sad they don't recognize the German heritage in their background as Germans are usually very smart and well educated...the ones captured in the war were sent to my Great grandfather's farm and my dad said they were very hard working people and very strong and resourceful.
Not odd to exclude it. Not all facts about all things fit into all documentaries. It would have stuck out as extraordinarily "odd", in context, had it been mentioned here. The same argument used to include that fact could be used to justify the inclusion of, like, one dozen or one million other facts. IDEA FOR YOU: Make a documentary about George's treatment of his children. Include any information you want. (Somebody will come along and say, "Isn't it SO ODD that they didn't include this ONE THING that I happen to know about?")
In her day and time, she was considered a beauty. Now she would be considered below average. It is a shame that people judge others by their looks and not intelligence or character.
She was in her time. Who are you to judge? She was very attractive. She was no Lauren Bacall but she was attractive in her own right. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
I think she was very pretty and by all accounts very charming. To be charming and appealing seems to add to anyones looks. Of course we cant see this in photos.
For the 1920s, she was a cutie. My grandfather was born the same year as she was, and she was just his type. My cousins and I back in the 1970s used to laugh about the girls he said were pretty.
the thing I have always found a hoot ....was when George V changed the name of the family. I can see his point. but if I decided that an apple is an orange....doesn't change the FACT that it's an apple. Windsor is a very British name. but the actual NAME of the family is German. can't get around it. Victoria was German by blood, although born in Britain. Albert was 100% German.
@@m2ranojaholo79 when the hanover branch took the throne. that was george 1 through the fourth. after Queen Anne died without children....the nearest relative was elector george.
Why is it a hoot? There was massive anti-German sentiment during WWI and George had to listen to this. To not do so was not in the best interests of the royal family and he could see that.
@@m2ranojaholo79 Technically, before the royal family was German, it was rather French for a long time. After the Normans, the Plantagenets were French and spoke French until the 100 years war. The Stuarts also had close ties to France. The only time the royal family was decidedly not French, during centuries of being their hereditary enemies was under the the Hanoverian dynasty. I think this emphasis on the origins of royal blood is over hyped and over emphasized. Strict rules regarding stature of potential spouses, the fractured nature of the HRE meant Germans dominated the pool, and once Catholics were banned the Germans completely monopolized the pool. Germany was not united until 1871 and was not a natural enemy of Britain until Cousin Willy started building ships. Prior to that German states were often alligned with Britain against the French, the traditional enemy.
It's actually Saxe-Coburg AND Gotha. The "and" is important, because it was actually two separate duchies with different governments and parliaments. The ruling duke spent six months of the year in Coburg and the other six months living in Gotha. How that happened is way, WAY too complicated to explain here!
You couldn't possibly eat them all. Wallace Simpson once recalled that at a dinner party when she and Edward first met they were chatting about being a royal and hunting was part of it. Wallace despised hunting for sport as she loved animals. Edward began to tell her how, on one of his father's shoots his party killed 4,000 pheasant. Wallace was aghast and speechless. Edward then told her 'the only word for it is carnage.'
Is it true that Churchill asked QE I what was Wallis' hold on the King, that she replied Wallis had certain talents, acquired while staying in Shanghai?
Its been derided by historians so no; it most likely never happened. Incidentally, I believe the conversation was supposed to have taken place between Churchill and King George VI and it was the king who asked the question.
No, some people made such claims but Simpson simply was very outgoing, lively, witty, charming and knew how they have a good time. With that she totally different than the stiff royal family and like a magnet to the king.
Pity George V refused sanctuary to the Tzar and his family. He could've saved them, but he feared an uprising in UK similar to what had happened in Russia. Prime Minister Askwith took the rap for that decision. So unfair.
That’s typical of the RF. Every time Charles gets caught out doing something illegal he blames his servant Fawcett, who then resigns, and a year later Fawcett is reinstated as though nothing had happened. None of the RF ever takes responsibility for his/her actions. They make me sick!
He made the right decsion. While it was sad that the children (who were mostly young adults) died, the many crimes of the Tsar would have been destabilizing on the house of Windsor and might have ended the UK Monarchy as it is did all the others in Europe.
I find it interesting that after the death of Edward Vlll George V and Queen Mary in one year had a Coronation, an investiture ceremony at Carnarvon Castle for their heir and the Delhi Durbar in India. Here, following the death of Elizabeth ll we've been told that there will be no investiture ceremony for William and the Coronation will be scaled down. Britain is the only country in Europe where the sovereign is actually crowned. The other monarchies have innaugurations etc with the crown sitting on a cushion. God forbid that happens here. The State Opening of Parliament with cars instead of carriages, day clothing instead of robes and tiaras and the crown upon a cushion! No! If you're going to do it,do it right. The fact that our sovereign wears the crown and reads the speech from the throne after arriving by carriage procession is something special. It's continuity and tradition not an anachronism. Crowns were made to be worn. Same with tiaras and robes. We've been having Coronations for 1000 years and I say if it's not broken don't try to fix it.
As for investiture traditions, I wouldn’t want to wear the appalling rig that Edward was obliged to wear for his investiture as Prince of Wales. But for the sake of the public’s voracious appetite for royal scandals satisfied by the tabloid press, the British monarchy is a relic of the past. In a word, too big to fail. Too many jobs involved, therefore too much money to pass up.
Hope the KIng's horse wasn't hurt for that trash. Longest Living Monarchy in the world is the Imperial Japanese Chrysanthemum Throne around for 2600 years. The oldest continuing hereditary monarchy in the world. The House of Windsor is just the most well known, not the oldest.
Wellis was not beautiful, but she gave a great favor to the monarchy, and giving the possibility to the stuttering shy Bertie, (George VI, the favorite of George V, for this he was very demanding with him) was the best thing Wellis did.
The only reason they are so darn interesting is because their characters change all the time and there’s always some kinda drama going on around them and their personal lives....
They would’ve eaten them, used the feathers etc. It was a different time. At that time, meat wasn’t part of every meal. It’s not like they went fishing, had a great day and left the fish on the shore to die. A waste of life. But meat did equal health to fight diseases back then. Also, you didn’t always go to the butchers. May not even have one. They didn’t have the vegetarian mindset that had developed in other parts of the world by then. They were just forced vegetarians till they could get some meat. Any meat. Remember they still had the memories of things like the Potato famine etc. so I’m coming from the POV of an omnivore. I have been a hunter, farmer and then an office worker who now struggles to kill flies without apologising. I still agree with HUNTING(food)and culling. Dispatched as quickly and humanely as possible. Not just murder for a laugh we see sometimes). I just don’t see the need for me these days to kill. Plus you can see, there was way more wild life back then. The supermarket is up the road. My mates hunt boars and deer which are pests here. They do it right, they pack the meat and they use ALL of it. It’s a bit hard to apply modern mindsets to an bistro rival time. I mean, most of these people(royals) married their own bloody family members or had them assassinated etc. One is the circle of life and one is a morality issue.
I sense nothing here in Germany from Brexit, just a Britain that screwed itself to sellout more for pseudo traditional city of London international banister. They will pay badly, bye bye NHS...welcome to murica...
These American divorced woman seem to have a thing for Britain's royal Prince's ... Thankfully Harry came second so wasn't in direct line ... Or we would of had history repeating it's self for real ! 😳 Lol
I doubt it… If the monarchy could survive King Edward VII and his known affairs, possible love children, and mistresses (MANY WOMEN, not just the one, mind you, and in a different time when it was even more taboo), then it can survive Prince Charles and Camilla. 🤷♀️ He wanted to marry her before Princess Diana (bless her) was ever an option, but he was told no, because of her reputation, because of her not being a virgin, and because she was “common”. Kate Middleton was the first commoner to marry a Royal, I’m fairly sure. It changed over the years. Anyway, he never stopped loving Camilla and was pushed to propose to the young, beautiful Princess Diana… The rest is history…

Queenie
I love the Queen she was never horrible, never mean
She was a wonderful head of state,
with all the worlds problems on her plate, Like politicians destroying her country, upholding traditions and all their superstitions,
She was assiduous to her duties, carried out with Grace and Beauty, she Devoted her life to the service of this Country,
A dutiful wife, bringing life, bearing the sorrows of her nation!
Regal and Sovereign, a Jewel in the Crown Of gods beautiful creation

Edward wasn't cut out for royal duties in the first place and Wallis was his exit door whether he loved her or not.
Edward needed psychological treatment.
He didn’t listen to his family, that woman ruin him.
Edward 8 liked Hitler.
I believe the notion HM Edward VIII would be considered foolish is due to his political leanings and affiliations. If he would have stayed the monarch during World War II this would have been an absolute detriment to the UK.
He was forced out ...utter wee shit ...
Because they made him think it was HIS idea to abdicate 😉

The thing about Queen Victoria is that she really took her husband's death hard. Never recovered, wore mourning the rest of her life and shirked her duties as queen. Naturally you going to be sad and depressed when your spouse died but she really wallowed in it.

@@retroguy9494 I think the reason Camilla is allowed, is that she won't be producing heirs.

Those disconcerting kings should have been ashamed of themselves. They behaved like stinkers, they wanted absolute power over the people. This is when the monarchy should have been dissolved permanently. They were absolute devils.

They are worse than Hitler was. Honestly, do you know anything about them at all ?
@Colonel Gibbs they changed their name because it was too German and they feared people would attack them due to the whole nazi sympathy. That's why they changed their name to obvious British surname.
LOVE the musical background!
Agree, although "Happy Days Are Here Again" used with WWI-era footage was kind of a goof. For Americans, at least, that song is powerfully associated with the year 1932 and Franklin Roosevelt.

George was the king we needed to guide us through World War One
I got lost... Wasn't Queen Mary of Tek, Queen Elizabeth's grandmother?
Yeah she was her grandmother
She was born Princess May of Teck and upon marriage became the Duchess of York, then Princess of Wales then eventually Queen Consort.
How did Wallis do the world a favor...and I think it's just sad they don't recognize the German heritage in their background as Germans are usually very smart and well educated...the ones captured in the war were sent to my Great grandfather's farm and my dad said they were very hard working people and very strong and resourceful.
Edward VIII was such a selfish brat. Ugh.
Odd this doesn’t touch on how incredibly abusive George was to his children!
Of course not. That would be considered to be "negative PR" in their minds. Instead, they should tell the whole truth.
There is other documentaries that raise that subject,
Which George? They named like 3 of them.
Hard faytha to his lads, as had been his pa to him by all reports. Thank God those strapping daze have GONE.

I dont know why the MSM persists in this myth that Elizabeth Bowes Lyon was “a beauty”.
To be charming and appealing seems to add to anyones looks.

the thing I have always found a hoot ....was when George V changed the name of the family. I can see his point. but if I decided that an apple is an orange....doesn't change the FACT that it's an apple. Windsor is a very British name. but the actual NAME of the family is German. can't get around it. Victoria was German by blood, although born in Britain. Albert was 100% German.
Do you know how the ruling British family became German from initially being Normans?
@@m2ranojaholo79 when the hanover branch took the throne. that was george 1 through the fourth. after Queen Anne died without children....the nearest relative was elector george.
Why is it a hoot? There was massive anti-German sentiment during WWI and George had to listen to this. To not do so was not in the best interests of the royal family and he could see that.
@@phineas117 The nearest PROTESTANT relative
Correction, the house of Saxe Coburgh Gotha, not Windsor, an adopted name in 1917 to sound more 'British and less German'.

Names change. It wasn’t originally Saxe-Coburgh-Gotha either.
It's actually Saxe-Coburg AND Gotha. The "and" is important, because it was actually two separate duchies with different governments and parliaments. The ruling duke spent six months of the year in Coburg and the other six months living in Gotha. How that happened is way, WAY too complicated to explain here!

I often wonder were those birds eaten or was it just sports? What a shame
