I was in Antwerp last week and I heard his version on the Radio in a supermarket and I went "Who sang this one, I'd like to hear it properly." This song always reminds me of my first girlfriend, oh why can't I go back to 1994?
I hate this show with a passion, but this guy made me tune it just to see what he would pull out, this is one of my favourite songs ever, and he did it better then the original in my opinion.
Totally delicious listening (and watching!) Lol - the judges mentioned that the piano went off-key after it got moved on-stage & under the lights - not Damien's fault they couldn't fix it in time before he sang.I love his mature interpretation too... so real.
Clearly a very good singer and piano player however some songs are hard to cover as they are soooooo associated with the original band. This just makes me want to listen to Neil Finn sing it
In fact, young person, I grew up on Split Enz and can sing this by heart. Neil Finn doesn't slow up before the phrase 'buried in the sand', throwing emphasis on it as though it were the most important message in the song. And thus I believe the phrasing was a mistake, not the lyric.
he is really good, it's not that easy to become famous, they don't just find you and see that you have talent. You have to do something about your talent.
Sure this is a talent contest also. He isnt meant to be able to out do originals etc. He is at the start of his career afterall. I agree, a very good version tho.
Guys if u think this is good have a look for an album titled ENZSO its the original finn brothers aka Split Enz doing a ballad with an orchestra the most awesome music i have ever heard
Weird phrase to end on, though, I think that was a mistake. Also, he's gonna have to choose songs carefully if he does release because otherwise it will be Val Doonicanland x Simon Gallagher.
@tamoril Preferably non-Irish. Although Neil and Tim's maternal ancestry can be traced back to the 'Emerald Isle', I can assure you, emigration was the right choice. God Defend New Zealand.
What a beautiful and timeless performance, Damien truly gave some of the most brilliant performances on these types of shows.
I love listening to Damien sing, and have ever since I saw him on Idol when I was visiting Australia. What a lovely, calming voice.
this song just touched me
heard it so many times in the past
but his delivery is perfect
Omg I thought no-one could sing this better than Neil, but this gave me goosebumps
I absolutely love this whole Winners Journey album. It’s perfection.
he certainly does pick all the best songs, and all my favorite songs
I still listen to this and I'm proud to say so.
A difficult song to cover, but he nails it! Fantastic!
I remember seeing this on TV. It was the only episode of Australian Idol I ever watched & I was awestruck by this performance.
This is a perfectly beautiful rendition of this song by Damien Leith (Australian Idol 2006). Love this version as much as the original.

The original is one of my favorite songs ever. While no one can touch Neil Finn singing "Message to My Girl", this performance is very good.
Yay!! I'm glad this is up again! The old one got taken down.
thank god for you tube ive been searching for these videos everywher
Still love him🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Sensational, from a Split Enz fan
this is an amazing cover.
I just love this so much
Damo won last yr (06) he was simply amazing...i watched every week just to hear him sing
i love this performance
beautiful
Still the best rendition of this song, bar none.... even Neil!
Sorry. A close second to Neil
amazing!

Top version ....
perfect
I feel like this towards a girl I love And i wish she could hear this song
He did a great job !!
Damien is a good singer with great potential. He was named Australian Idol.
I think Damien would have made the Top 6 on American Idol.
I disagree. I think he’d compete in the finale most years actually
brilliant
I like the Split Enz song and this version is beautiful
Clearly a very good singer and piano player however some songs are hard to cover as they are soooooo associated with the original band. This just makes me want to listen to Neil Finn sing it
This is so lacking. Only Neil and Tim Finn can bring this home.
What a great song! I wish our Idols (American) were allowed to play instruments while on the show. How long ago did he win Australian Idol?

Huh....funny, I don't seem to be able to find any versions performed by markduff, vedder12 or albion2304. Wonder why that is.
its by split enz people
no more empty self possession, vision swept under the mat.......its no new years resolution..... it's more than that. .....
@nicknearthebay Agreed. Neil can never be beaten. I heard him do a version of Cry Baby Cry and it was better than The Beatles.
Sure this is a talent contest also. He isnt meant to be able to out do originals etc. He is at the start of his career afterall. I agree, a very good version tho.
the boy can sing

cant believe the message though.

Disagree with literally everything you said here
Ahh Neil Finn actually... and he's got nothing on Neil!
