Thanks for inspiration here. Love your channel. Keep up the good work. I love “Fish Your Way”. I recently came across a Penn 350 and completed new drag system overhaul and general break down and clean up. Last weekend I spooled it with #30 Ande pink and I paired it up with an older Shimano Beastmaster rod and headed off shore here in FL where I live. Boated a 70 plus pound sailfish with this rig. First sail I have caught in over a decade. This old reel is awesome and is Bad-@ss. Thx for the effort you put into teaching on your videos.
They are old wonders that still work better then the stuff made today! I enjoy mine time to time too and how somthing so simple work great and last pretty much forever! beauty of a cartch you boated there would have loved to be there! Thanks so much for your kind words, sincere regards Jere
I saw in an old Penn catalog 350M works best when the first line guide is about 32 inches from the reel. I have a couple of different trolling rods I use and the first guide is a few inches closer to my reel and works okay. Maybe that lead core is not picky?? I don't remember the type of line they recommended. Thanks.
I’m addicted to these vintage reel videos! Especially when being used on the beach for some monsters! I’d love to see more in the future. Thanks for the great content, God bless.
My father passed away 10 years ago and this year I came across his fishing gear( which is now 2020) and the Penn 350 level line reel was in his tackle box. I wanted to see how it worked and your video showed me.
So happy to share thanks Michael so much appreciate the kind words and sorry about your loss it is nice you can still connect with your father through his old fishing gear and to think i helped show you some about really made my evening
would like to see more vintage penn videos, I have a squidder 140 and a 146 and a no77 sea hawk with original line and my dad has a bunch of penn reels. want to start a small collection
My grandfather gave me one when I was in college. I surprised my fishing buddies when I cast across the river with a 3oz weight. I think the reason they don't sell them any more is 1st: Penn probably had the patent. 2nd: they didn't catch on, like many innovative products don't.
Gentlemen/ reel fishermen you produce the most informative videos.... For the last forty years I have been using the Penn 350 for surf fishing. It happens to be an excellent reel that stud up to a great deal of fishing over the years and with a little maintenance will last a couple of generations. I like the use of the twelve inch long nose pliers to remove the hook. I am always learning something new watching your videos.....Thanking you, Sy

I received a large ocean pole with a reel on it many years ago from my father when I was a child. The pole is a Daiwa 7ft Seacoast graphite custom, it has a beautiful deep glossy brown with metal flake, and the knuckles in the pole for the eyes are wrapped with orange and red bands. It's just a terrific looking rod. Of course, it has a Penn 350 Leveline in beautiful condition. One day I'd love to take it to a pier and catch some fish with it, as it's not so good for the trout of the Sierra Nevadas, where I live.
Sounds like a beauty of a rod and the 350 great setup! I hope someday you get to use your dads old rod be perfect for the pier. The trout of the sierra nevadas sound simply amazing as well! I would love to fish for them! Thanks so much for sharing! Kindest Jerry

Go on most party boats in the north East and these old Penn reels are the industry standard. Most boats use OLD RELIABLE PEEN REELS because they are SO reliable and last for generations.
Yea, Tim has my squidder the suckers squicking rusting old beat up but she works! Service her once every 2 years should change the washers but my thumbs fine hehe they go and go!
We have two of these on the boat, purchased for the beginners, however, they are just great reels for anyone. FYI, the closest eye from the real works best when it is at least 30" from the real. I had to have two custom rods made for these.
I picked one up one Facebook and the guy had a Garcia Mitchell 624 as well. I got both reels and two rods for 50 bucks! The 350 is in really good shape. I stole the handle and reel clamp off the 624 and put them on the 350.

Cool, just ordered my 350, perfect for me as I have a fishing injury to my thumb which has very limited mobility and I don't like the normal level winders for beach casting. Can't wait to get it! Great channel BTW! ;)
Hi John, thanks for the kind words and hope you subscribe to the channel be doing some freshwater fishing till tghings warm up then back on the salt! The 350 is a engineering MARVEL a simple mechanism in a big way, enjoy the reel great stuff! Fish Your Way Jerry!
That handle is from the mitchell 600 series captain reels. You will need the handle lock from that as well to fit. It is much lighter and a much better grip it works great! Thanks for asking!
Picked up one of these old Leveline 350 reels and a Abu Garcia Ambassaduer 10000C for $5. I am never going to use them for surf fishing but they are going to be fantastic for catching catfish.
Another nice video! I noticed you use braid on your old classic reels, which is unusual. Do you think the braid will wear on the 350's level-line bar? What about rod guides? Thanks for your series!
Thanks as always mueshow! The bar will be fine as well as the guides. I just use braid, I keep a casting lenght plus more then a mono backing. Its a pretty cool reel!!!
Could you tell me more about the garcia Mitchell handle on the Penn 350? Which G-M handle is it? Which G-M reel handles series will fit? Thanks, and tight lines, brother.
I collect and use penn reels and the 350 is one of my favorites all of my penns are 🇺🇸 made.not 🇨🇳 like they are today big differences. Tight lines to ya.
I AGREE! ll my penns are post 90 from 1960-1989 models what a difference in makemanship! I could not agree with you more fins, thanks for watching commenting and subscribing!
Jerry , while the spiral bar is turning . I very litely put my finger on the spiral bar and the bar stop turning . Is the bar supposed to stop turning ? Is that normal ?
It should turn with slight pressure, lots of pressure it may stop, if it does not turn with slight pressure gear may be worn but should still function perfectly fine, also old hard grease in excess may freeze it and slow it so it may just need blasted with wd40
This is an old penn spin fisher blank, most blanks to do 2-8oz 8-10ft should do ok, don't have to break the bank either with a bait rod, thanks for the comment and good words!
I found one of these at the dump of all places (It's amazing what you'll find there!) and added it to my collection. Next step is to spool both it and my bay master and match them to a rod. As a question tip, how long do you leave your chunk out for before replacing it? thanks - lovin' your vids! :)
I have always liked this reel, and I much prefer this levelline system to the levelwind. I think the reason they stopped making them is that the levelwind nut is too close to the edge of the left sideplate. I have seen a number of these reels with a crack in that sideplate at the nut. Even without putting any kind of pressure on it when snugging it up, as the plastic ages and becomes brittle, it cracks. I have one good one at home, and two with cracked sideplates. Never used it from the beach though. Nice workout with that shark.
Yea, the bakelite as sturdy as it is can get prone to failure if stored improper. You can get plates for them cheap on ebay to replace. the mitchell captain series as great as they are always get spider craks which you can see because of the cream color bakelite. The dark you can not untill well...... Great reel though! Enjoyed reading your comment and hope you subscribe to the channel. have a blessed new year!
Jerry, thanks for the content....love this channel. How is backlash with casting the 350 and do you get a casting distance you are happy with using it with your setup? Thx
Much welcome and thank you! I been using conventional reels for many years so I do not have many problems with backlash. however if you are first starting they may be unforgiving until you get the feel. I say start slow and short. They cast great you can get well over 100yds with a raw sinker easy. rigged as such distance is cut down however as with any buly lob sided rig. but they can cast a weight as far as anything else if not further with a bakelite spool. This setup I am using a chrome spool they are heavy. Good question and thanks so much again, kindest Jerry
Jerry, thx for the kind reply. I started collecting old penn reels about 6 months ago. I had a random memory of myself as a kid looking up at my grandpa's penn reels while he surfed the beach. I grew up in florida. I wanted to relive that at am now hooked!!!! I found your channel and love it! I found it by searching reading the beach and found your tutorials and it just so happened u r a vintage reel guy as well. I ve concentrated on the no 9 209 309 squidder jigmaster....shakespeare marhoff (looks cool), pflueger with the engraving (they dont make things like this anymore...all disposable). I like the Ocean City reel and how you mentioned him being about 70 yo and the history behind it and how he;'s home again. Exactly how I feel! Few folk get it. My brother in law says to just get a fancy new reel....NEVER :) So I've deep cleaned, refurbished ALL my vintage reels including parts if needed and drag stacks. Some with plastic spools, some with aluminum. The aluminum ones I magged internally and can adjust power by changing washer stack size or simply removing magnets. I live in SD now and so no easy access to beach. I cast in the grass to practice.....and you sir are a savant virtuoso at casting the old reels!!!!! I dont think I will ever get to that level of competence but I will try. Well , thanks again for the incredible content and willingness to share/teach. I have resound a passion and its awesome! Keep fishing your way!! Stay safe out there
Much welcome and thanks again. Many of the reels are the same ones I had when I was a kid like the PENN 77 SeaHawk. It was my first reel so I had the touch of them when I was 6 or 7. My main bait reel now is the squidder I have not done a video on that yet but its in many of my recordings. For lures I prefer the ambassadeurs and I still use one I had when I was 17. I would prefer a no.9 but I prefer the left crank when working lures and the penn no 9 LH run rare unfortunately. Agin thanks much for sharing, commenting, watching and the kind words. Tightlines to you! jerry
Just grabbed one off fleabay in great shape for a 20 spot. Will surf fish with it. Crazy how inexpensive some of the old Penn reels are going for. Quality machines for new Chinese Walmart junk prices. No brainer.
Jerry quick question..I noticed you never use the head of a bunker for shark...no luck in the past using it?? I get stripers quite a bit with the head..Thanks
Master angler, AND master salesman. I ordered one of the many extremely reasonably priced examples on EBay. What size rod were you using again with this? Thanks again, Jerry!
they are fun reels perfect for the job thanks DB, I use a 11' 2-8oz rod with a 4-6oz sweet spot anything in that ball park should work, thanks again and Fish Your Way! jerry
Hi Jerry, I have a low profile baitcast reel made by Ardent that has the same type level line. I got it probably 10 years ago. A lot of reviews on it were not good the one I got is great I use it for largemouth bass fishing never had an issue. I also have the same reel you're using in this video. Great catch also.
@@FishYourWay yes you're correct. It's not Ardent it's U.S. reel supercaster with wave bar. I guess I have too many, can't remember what's what anymore. Anyway I think it's a fine reel.
Good questions, thanks for watching and hope you subscribe to the channel. I would have to say any rod that will throw 8oz plus bait around 40yds or more will get the job done! I would not worry you should be able to find many on the market. Its not a distance game you lose it with the bulky rigs and bait anyways
Its a mix, some are mine, some I come across and some are given to me. I also work on reels so I also come across and seen and used ALOT of stuff out there, vintage and new, under and overpriced, shiny and rusty. I test a lot. If there's a reel a good chance I have used or fixed it at some point of time!
Hi Jerry , love your show ! Question : the leveline bar really work 100% to spool the line evenly or is it a gimmick ? Wiuld monofilament or braid work better for the leveline ? Thank you for reply greatly.
Company sold, but also I think they try to keep up with trends in the market they dont make many models but kept a few key ones which id good but the materials are not the same, i prefer the older ones good question!
That Penn 350 is a sweet reel. You really tested it with that Shark you caught! I've got one, need to upgrade the drags to Carbon Fiber and get an appropriate surf rod to match it with. What rod would you recommend to match with the 350?
And surf rod to handle 8 and bait will do! Thants an old penn blank there too big game surf penn mode4l had it for years a awesome rod for the job! Thanks James!
Thanks for this verry informative video! I just got a near mint penn level line of ebay for $30 and plan on using it with a penn prevail or battalion 12' surf rod for sharks in NJ when I go there on vacation to visit family. Will 8 ounces hold in most circumstances or do you usually have to throw heavier to anchor a big piece of bunker or squid?
Much welcome and thanks for watching. They are awesome reels you will enjoy it, I say if you dont hold with 8 you may as well go home and you should hold with 6 in those conditions. I rarely go with 8 only if I have too so pick the weight that hits your rods sweetspot and cast for the stars! but I use 6 90% of the time for big bait, hope that helps! Kindest and hope you subscribe to the channel, tightlines Jerry
Thanks for the reply! That helps alot and yes I am subscribed I enjoy the videos on this channel. I live in IL so it is hard to find information on surf/shark fishing so this channel has been a tremendous help.
Jerry.. Great videos buddy as usual.. I've never caught a shark off the beach but you have inspired me to try. Maybe Ill come down to Jones and run into you guys sometime. lol Ill also try Atlantic beach.. I think the best part of sharking off the beach though is the company your in. Hope to see you out there and keep those vids coming!
Thanks Pino, you are right I am blessed with a great group of folks I keep tight. If your ever near by stop and say hi ok! Sometimes I do like to fish alone but its great to fish with a nice crowd. Thanks so much!
Great reels! Love em all they made one for every ocasion! The only one I wish the made more of in a LH is the no 9 or 10, love the smaller profile for lures but I prefer left hand crank with lures you can find em but they are scarce, I better get looking! Thanks so much for watching, hope you subscribe to the channel and always Fish Your Way!
@@FishYourWay, I will subscribe. I like that line guide on one of those reels, the one that keeps the line even. Maybe I can cast some out of aluminum.
Really good upload, awesome looking reel too. Makes ya think that everything doesn't need to be improved, they work great just the way they are. I can't believe the size of sharks you guys are catching. Thanks for sharing Jerry.
Thanks for watching hybrid, yea i think a lot of the older stuff is just better then the newer reels. Brass components, solid bakelite built for the job!
Yes! I love the captain series handle, light and tight nice palming grip and out of the way! Good observation Edward! Thanks for watching and hope you subscribe to the channel and Fish Your Way!
I have that same real......mine has steel cable on it. Anyway......looked it up on ebay......sadly worth less than $10.00. I don't understand it because it is a nice real.
They are great reels. Some are worth more then others can go up to 100.00 pending on condition but range from 30-50 normally in good working shape. Thanks for sharing, watching, commenting and subscribing! Tightlines!
Why does your hands shake so much? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm interested in the story behind it. Anyhow, love your videos bud, you inspired me to get an old Senator 114HL without the level wind, and it's built like a tank! I just had it serviced, I had the anti-reversed fixed, and I'm taking this bad boy and my Master Blackfinn 25-80LB rod out bottom fishing for Sanddabs at 60 fathoms! Keep up the good work bud!
Thank for the comment and kind words! Not rude at all and glad you asked! I get asked or commented on about my shaking body all the time. My whole body has some sort of tremor and I have no control of it. I have ET Essential Tremor which is a non resting tremor of my muscles, meaning when I flex they shake. It started when I was around 10 as I had a serious neuromuscular disease, rare, it was actually on the news recently as a out break and that was one of the side effects luckily one of only a few. It is some sort of a blessing and It is a good gauge of other peoples character how they respond to it as I got this comment on this video right after your comment oddly "Can u stop shaking!?" th-cam.com/video/V3BzfLH6RQg/w-d-xo.html . Its like a trademark now and I would not want to not shake at this point of my life oddly. I appreciate you asking and always happy to discuss. Those senators are time tested winches about pull up anything from the deep! True work horses. All the old penns are great I use many of the ones I got when I was younger to this day! Made my night reading your comment, thanks for watching, subscribing and always Fish Your Way! Kindest regards Jerry
@@FishYourWay Wow that's amazing! You have such a great spirit about it too. That's a rare quality of character these days. I definitely wouldn't want you to change anything either, it shows great perseverance on your part. I always know it's one of your videos when I'm surfing TH-cam fishing videos, because I can see the old reel and the hands dancing about. You definitely have a great channel here, thanks a ton for all the info. I haven't taken my reel out yet, I'm waiting on March 1st, because that's when our Rock Cod season starts. You're the best dood! -Robert
Thanks Robert again for the kind words. The 1st is right around the corner! hope you have a blessed season and the tackle is ready to go polished and greased I still have to do mine! Kindest, Jerry
@@FishYourWay HI, I have Parkinsons Disease and had Deep Brain Stimulation surgery last year. I have had excellent results! A good friend of mine has tremors like you and she had the DBS surgery a few months ago and is, also, doing quite well. My email is jeffrey.wasson@gmail.com if you have any questions. I would be more than happy to answer. I am sorry if I got off the subject of the 350M. I have 2 of them and I don't think either has ever seen saltwater. I use mine at Shasta Lake in California trolling for salmon, rainbows, and browns. They are fabulous lead core reels! Thank you and keep up the good work.

This reel is outstanding! You changed the handle, can you tell us, which handle you use for Penn reels? Thx in advance!
Very cool
Another nice video! I noticed you use braid on your old classic reels, which is unusual. Do you think the braid will wear on the 350's level-line bar? What about rod guides? Thanks for your series!
Thanks as always mueshow! The bar will be fine as well as the guides. I just use braid, I keep a casting lenght plus more then a mono backing. Its a pretty cool reel!!!
Could you tell me more about the garcia Mitchell handle on the Penn 350? Which G-M handle is it? Which G-M reel handles series will fit? Thanks, and tight lines, brother.
Its the 600 series they are great handles! The lock nut will fit too Has the same thread as the PENN reels it really helps!
I could not agree with you more fins, thanks for watching commenting and subscribing!
i just bought one of these reels im hoping it works well
Hope it works they work great just make sure you use mono works best with that type guide
@@FishYourWay what pound test would you recommend
30lb or 20lb should get it done
Jerry , while the spiral bar is turning . I very litely put my finger on the spiral bar and the bar stop turning . Is the bar supposed to stop turning ? Is that normal ?
It should turn with slight pressure, lots of pressure it may stop, if it does not turn with slight pressure gear may be worn but should still function perfectly fine, also old hard grease in excess may freeze it and slow it so it may just need blasted with wd40
Great video, I just got a penn 350 from my grandfather. I need a good surf rod for it and was wondering what type of rod yours it? Thanks
Very cool! I had people hand me reels of the same! Apeciate that dan. I would say I give 5-10 minutes a chunk then refresh. Thanks again much~!
What rod were you using with the Penn 350 level line reel?
Thanks for watching David thats a old penn spinfisher blank
i have the same reel..very nice job catch and release
They are great thanks for watching and commenting KA!!!!!!
Nice reel
Thanks Airborne! Think Im gonna use it for a little bit i think! Its pretty cool! Thanks for watching!
Hi Jerry that Newell reel nice it's a shame thay don't make this reel anymore 🐟
I know they really had that one down thanks Jeffrey!
Even my new penn Spinfisher, accidentally dunked it in water, left it for like 3 days opened it up dried everything out worked good as new
Good stuff mario!!!
FishJonesBeach Thanks man!
No brainer.
They are great you will love it!
Jerry quick question..I noticed you never use the head of a bunker for shark...no luck in the past using it?? I get stripers quite a bit with the head..Thanks
Great questin, i rarely use them unless things are tight! But do prefer meat as yo7uu see! Great q8uestion!
Where did you get the bigger reel handle crank?
Thats actually from a mitchell captain 600 series reel
Thats so cool, I think US Reels did that as well a neat levelwind system free flowing you just can beat it thanks for sharing Game Hog
@@FishYourWay yes you're correct. It's not Ardent it's U.S. reel supercaster with wave bar. I guess I have too many, can't remember what's what anymore. Anyway I think it's a fine reel.
@@gamehog2696 They look like nice reels! I never bought any cause I have too many just like you but always wanted one!
Just a question: does the 350 still work as good as in the vid? Or does ist take sand and starts to block?
Oh yea, they go pretty good through time really well made good question Robert, I just like my 140 better!
What is a good, cheap rod for surf shark fishing?
Good questions, thanks for watching and hope you subscribe to the channel. I would have to say any rod that will throw 8oz plus bait around 40yds or more will get the job done! I would not worry you should be able to find many on the market. Its not a distance game you lose it with the bulky rigs and bait anyways
Do you ever pick up these reels at yard sales? Ebay? or did you get them new.?
Its a mix, some are mine, some I come across and some are given to me. I also work on reels so I also come across and seen and used ALOT of stuff out there, vintage and new, under and overpriced, shiny and rusty. I test a lot. If there's a reel a good chance I have used or fixed it at some point of time!
Hi Jerry , love your show !
Question : the leveline bar really work 100% to spool the line evenly or is it a gimmick ?
Wiuld monofilament or braid work better for the leveline ?
Thank you for reply greatly.
Certainly mono
I have that same reel I’m getting it back today from the shop
They are awesome reels you will enjoy it! thanks Daniel!
Do you know why penn doesn’t make level line anymore?
Thanks for the kind words Jacob anything ask anytime ok! I think it so cool hearing from people across the country! Thanks again! jerry
I bet that reel and a 5oz sinker would cast a country mile
You got it! Can get a jig or raw sinker about a mile past the bar!!!! Thanks as always!
Lol guess if I waited to the end I would herd you tell of to use of the Garcia handle lol
gotcha! Thanks again Edward!
How much line does it hold?
Close to 280yds/30 mono it varies with line but you could exspect 230-280 on a fill of 30lb good question
@@FishYourWay thank you!
hey do you know any buddy that rebulids these reals on longisland... cause I have one and she seen it uses
I work on my own but I bet most bait and tackles will have a service person for reels! Hope that helps!
Just got a nice Pen 60 Long Beach. I can't keep my hands of it.
Sounds like it would work!
@@FishYourWay, I'll give it a go!
FYW Can u check out Poole Graphics on TH-cam and tell me what u think?
Really good upload, awesome looking reel too. Makes ya think that everything doesn't need to be improved, they work great just the way they are. I can't believe the size of sharks you guys are catching. Thanks for sharing Jerry.
Thanks for watching hybrid, yea i think a lot of the older stuff is just better then the newer reels. Brass components, solid bakelite built for the job!
Had one as a kid loved that reel but that crank handle looks like it came from a Garcia reel
Yes! I love the captain series handle, light and tight nice palming grip and out of the way! Good observation Edward! Thanks for watching and hope you subscribe to the channel and Fish Your Way!
sir what the name rod please
Thats a penn spinfisher big game conventional model great rod!
@@FishYourWay PE 6 ?
@@indrabilal6760 Think its 11'6" 2-8oz
My reel is an old Penn Level Wind 9 I call The Weapon
I love those, wish they had more LH models I prefer a lh with the levelwind or over all guess the suit most to right handed cranking good stuff!
Очередной Вам палец вверх за ролик, заходите в гости буду рад.
Thanks!
