      Actually there have been rumours that Mary herself fathered up to two illegitimate children of the king that he himself did not recognise. She wasn't sent away but banished from court after her secret marriage to William Stafford, which indeed saved her yet she lived in poverty with no support from family. A price to pay for a long, safe life

    I always assumed, especially with Jane Parker's little bit there, that the queen was trying to justify why Mary was there, besides the obvious. She was probably embarrassed that it was obvious she was just there for the King.

    Don't like how Catherine is portrayed as an intimidating, almost bullying character who likes to embarrass Mary and and Anne. Nothing could be further from the truth: as queen Catherine was always respectful, dignified and polite, even with her enemies.

    • @mesmer3780
      @mesmer3780 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Not technically, no. The position was basically a medieval dating service for the 1%. It existed to give the Queen friends, and let her play matchmaker for the daughters of lesser royals and nobility. There was the occasional handmaid-King fling... But because these girls were often the daughters of the King's friends and allies, he would usually cheat with the daughters/bastard daughters of court hangers-on, or upper middle class merchants, to avoid scandal.

    • @susanachristine5101
      @susanachristine5101 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, it means they were servants and companions to the Queen. They did things like dress her and brush her hair and keep her company.
      However, it wasn't uncommon for kings to have mistresses, especially when their wives were pregnant, and royal mistress was an official position at a royal court. However, Christianity was the dominant religion in Europe at that time and adultery and fornication are both sins in Christianity.
      So King Henry probably gave Mary to Katherine as a lady in waiting because he knew it would provide Mary with a legitimate and morally acceptable position in his court than just "the royal mistress."

    In history that was basically true on Mary Boleyn's part. She was known as the reluctant mistress. Cause this was against her will, but she wasn't exactly as smart as her two siblings are because she was the very person to be a wife and mother like sewing, poems, and singing.
    Then just like that, the king loses interest in Mary after the birth of her children who later on believed could be the King's or one of them exactly.
    She was the only surviving Boleyn and they said her father Thomas made amends to Mary and gave her inheritances or whatever houses they had left after the king demoted him and banished him from court.
    Yet in the end, Mary Boleyn's line became the royalty descended and it was by Elizabeth II who was her descendant.

      There were two children she had when she was married and both were rumoured as such yet never recognised but this is heavily disputed as they could have been her husband's as well.. Although she was married in that time she became the king's mistress it is unknown the exact dates of when this started yet it finished when the king wanted her sister.

    Why does the actress playing Queen Katherine not have that thing removed from her lip? It's so gross

      You should pay attention to the fact that this movie is "based" on true events, however, nobody living today know what happened, in detail. Have you read or studied history or just watched a movie and decided you know enough to hate somebody? Making these comments are very immature unless based on real facts. It is also interesting that you seem hate Anne Boleyn, but how about the man who actually killed her and left Catherine? No comment, I guess? I assume you know this was only the first wife he killed, not the last.

    Why on Earth they got American actresses to play Mary and Anne I don’t know - the book is fantastic and the film is good but I can’t distract myself from their stilted English accents 😕
