  • I am sorry about the audio problems for that short bit in the beginning of the video. I am using a new mic and have not figured out what caused the static in that one section of the audio. I will try to figure out what caused it and correct it. Thanks for understanding!
    In this installment of FullThrottleRC, I cover a topic that I receive a lot of questions on. People always seem to ask about my opinion of the Axial SMT10. I decided I would make a video talking about some of the good parts of this truck as well as some of its problems. Hopefully this video can help you decide if the SMT10 is the right truck for you!

    I really appreciate your video because I have always been a basher of large, fast, tough trucks and I appreciate your warning about that. I looked at the SMT10 about three years ago and decided at the time it was not my cup of tea specifically for the reasons you specified. However, now that a builder's kit will be in stores soon, I decided to watch some videos again. I'm somewhat intrigued. One huge plus for the SMT10 is that there is already healthy after-market support for it along with plenty of "how to" videos on what to upgrade for specific results. I might just buy the builder's kit when it hits the stores and see what I can do with it. I've always loved wrenching on my trucks, go out, see what breaks, fix it, then try again. Typical basher mentality. Worst case, it doesn't grow on me, then I sell it having had the fun of working on it. I actually already bought my first piece of kit - a "Max-D" Maximum Destruction body. Somebody had one on FleaBag for a fair price and I decided it was just too cool to pass up: www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.shopify.com%2Fs%2Ffiles%2F1%2F1977%2F4341%2Fproducts%2F2ed3a74d93abf0365fdc42cc163320d7cebf9bd397bf10bbb752aea42e4cd51f_1024x1024.jpg%3Fv%3D1571711620&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fmehobbiesrc.com%2Fproducts%2Faxial-smt10-max-d-body-this-is-a-great-looking-body-fits-the-grave-digger-also&docid=86UvH-v5Lt8YnM&tbnid=BKL9dRp5Kp7IMM%3A&vet=10ahUKEwjt-L7tyu_mAhVFpFkKHR8lCiIQMwiFAiguMC4..i&w=1024&h=768&bih=783&biw=1556&q=smt10%20max-d%20body&ved=0ahUKEwjt-L7tyu_mAhVFpFkKHR8lCiIQMwiFAiguMC4&iact=mrc&uact=8

    I just got one a couple months ago. Like you said it handles just like the real thing. My only complaint is the cost of parts. I'm a newbie and had sticker shock. I guess you gotta pay to play!

    • @FullThrottleRC
      @FullThrottleRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately there aren't many cheap things in this hobby. I would guess some of the part on this truck are more expensive because of their uniqueness and complexity. Up until this recent front axle break, I hadn't had many problems with the truck for a while though.

  • @StratRC

    Great video, but like you said at the end all the SMTs have been discontinued and they are really hard to find now. I'm hoping Axial releases a kit with no Monster Jam licensed body or even an SMT10 ii down the road. I really wanted one of these but just missed my window I guess. Even the chassis alone is hard to find now.

    • @FullThrottleRC
      @FullThrottleRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep they are getting tough and expensive to find now. Something tells me it will be back though. Maybe the Monster Jam license expired so they pulled the trucks from production to work out a few known problems before they re-release it without the branded bodies. I think the platform is too popular and works too well to just kill it altogether. Fingers crossed they come back soon. 🤞🤞👍

    Whats your opinion on the new and "improved" version coming next month? Would it be ready for brushless since it's all metal geared?

    • @FullThrottleRC
      @FullThrottleRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been thinking about getting one. The transmission in the kit would be able to handle brushless. I'm still undecided about the axles though. My main problem with the original is the AR60s don't handle all that abuse well.

    Thanks for the info. Am so close to buy one new, but i don't want to have to fix and tune it every time i run it... so.... Does the axial grave digger monster truck worth the buy for 250 euros brand new in stock form? Will it break easy with "scale driving" on 3s in stock form? Thanks for any good advice.

    • @FullThrottleRC
      @FullThrottleRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I converted it right, 250 euros is about $280 which would be a very good deal for a brand new SMT10. On 3s, the main problem I see you having is the transmission gears. Change them out to metal gears and you should be fine! Hope this helps!

    They Re Released it with a better servo and a 12 turn 550. i Just got A smt 10 digger a couple days ago. Broke the servo saver in 10 minutes. That being said I put an all meatal heavy duty one on it, and other than changing shock mounting around ive had no other problems. My firs real RC truck was a Clod Buster, and straight out of the box this is faster and handles better. As for durability lets just say my clod ended up an almost all aluminum Monstrosity before it was done. Just becareful of sideswiping curbs.

    • @FullThrottleRC
      @FullThrottleRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SMT10 is a great truck. Durability wise, it's fine in stock form. But when you get bored of the brushed motor and are ready to go brushless, the axles will go pretty quickly. I've been through a bunch. Finally bit the bullet and bought aluminum housings, the plastics flex too much causing the diffs to slip. That's my only complaint about the truck. Other than that the SMT10 is a fantastic truck

      @@FullThrottleRC I have a bullit proof basher, an HPI Pro mt 4x4, the only thing it breaks is servos, got a trx with lights sounds and interior, thats actually the slowest even with a mild brushless, its just to turn heads while i get excersize, and i have an Acossciated shortcourse 4x4 thats actualy to fast for anything other than raceing, (its hard on the rear ring and pinion). I got the SMt10, just because it was Digger, and i knew you could get a ton of parts if i broke it. So Far its been a good truck. I have metal axle inserts comming, and Ill probably leave it stock unless i burn up the speedcontroll.
      And i didn't want to try and replace an all aluminum racing clod LOL.

    • @FullThrottleRC
      @FullThrottleRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the MIP driveshafts for the SMT10 are discontinued, unless I just didn't see they started making them again when the 2.0 was released. If you get an actual set for the SMT10 the installation is just swapping out the old axle. If you have a set for a different model, I can't tell you how or if it'll fit.

    It seems every rc car out there from factory isn't actually ready to race at all, lol. It seems like from the fifty videos I've seen today on the topic that, no rc toy is good enough at stock, and that's paying $500+ on them! What the hell is wrong with the industry selling insubstantial crap to the masses? The second hand market is swamped with broken cars and parts bins and full upgrades seem to double build costs. If I had the money I'd start my own rc manufacturing business selling "no upgrade path" cars that are off the shelf class perfection.

    • @FullThrottleRC
      @FullThrottleRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I once had the same opinion until I really understood how the companies operate. The fact is RC is a niche industry, as big as the community is, its also pretty small. Companies have to try to put out a product that is capable but also low on cost. From my understanding, a lot of kits are marked up almost 50% because if not, the companies could not justify the cost of research and development and basically the industry would be non-existent. If they made cars "bulletproof" off the shelf, the price would be outrageous and likely not sell. So the solution is to make a car that's affordable, even if you have to sacrifice a little, and offer upgrades to those who want to go that far. The way I think of it is, sure if the cars were "unbreakable" off the shelf that would be awesome. But the price would drive many people away and the hobby would not survive. Could you image if the only RCs you could buy were the price of an X-Maxx? How many people would actually jump into the hobby at that price?
      Sorry that was very long winded, but I hope some of that made a little sense at least 👍😂
