    Here in north east texas we have our share of wood bees. They bore holes in the structure of our barns and sheds. Eventually causing structural failure. As a youngster we would spend hours hunting these bees. These bees do a lot of hovering wich makes them pretty easy targets. But hitting one on the fly is tricky. We used the old crimped type , that we called Rat Shot. They worked quite well.

      This makes perfect sense to me. I found a box of these in my dad's tool shop (he's deceased) and he used to complain all the time how birds would fly into the shop and shit on everything. The shop is literally a barn with concrete floor so the roof is metal. I don't imagine these rounds going through a roof but they would definitely take out a small bird. Maybe. He only used about 4 out of the box. Maybe he didn't find them effective. Anyway, they look like an interesting bullet so i'm gonna give them a shot.

    When hiking in AZ I carry my Ruger mark 2 with 3 of these in the top of the magazine for rattlesnakes. At 6 to 7 feet, I have shot 3 rattlers, even though the first shot does the job, I always follow with a second shot. The bolt has to be hand cycled as these shells won't cycle the bolt, which the box clearly states "will not cycle semi-automatic firearms". The CCI shotshells are the ones to use, as the winchesters and federals are all brass, and the fired shell sticks in the rifling of the rifle or semi auto pistol - for revolvers this is not a problem

    • @justinfantastic4882
      @justinfantastic4882 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      careful many of those rattlers you have in AZ are federally protected..ignorance is no excuse..they cannot be hunted or killed..killing a federally protected animal on federal land with a firearm can get you into some serious jail time trouble (hope you at least have a license)..as in your nuts for putting your name out here like that.. killing a snake just because its a snake is no justification these days.. unless in your home..Im sure someone will forward this post to AZ game at some point..!! Also without snakes going into burrows and eating the vast numbers of rodents you'll end up with the same problems everyone else has when they have no more.. a big rise in rodents,rabies and the likes.. 90% of people bitten by snakes in the USA were trying to kill them, pick them up etc.. just avoid them ,you could just walk away..I know this.. cause it's my Job.

      Notwithstanding the wisdom of usually leaving snakes alone , and many of them being protected ;
      At 2- 5 feet in outdoor environments , a head shot with solid bullet is instantly incapacitating . Even if head is moving too much , a mag dump to the body is quickly fatal , and impares their mobility in their final seconds .

      @@justinfantastic4882 I have hiked and camped EXTENSIVELY in the Arizona desert since 1980. I have crossed the paths of rattlesnakes many times, even unknowingly standing close (inches) to them while they sleep. The snakes are docile and polite unless stepped upon or otherwise messed with. I cannot understand why people are intent on killing them because, as you say, they do us all a great service. It seems every snowbird thinks it is their duty or right to shoot (or run them over with their ATV) every snake they see. I don't get it.

    When I lived out in the country I used to walk my property with a 22 WMR revolver loaded with shot shells for snake control. I found the magnum loads would dispatch even a large rattler at about 9 feet. Closer than that and you would blow chunks off the critter. I loved the fact I didn't have to be spot on with my target aquisition!

    I have to say, I did actually see these used against a snake. The snake was hit by 4 separate rounds at very close range (probably about 4-5 feet) from a handgun. Specifically, each time the handgun was fired, you could see skin come off the snake's head, however, the snake continued to move and hiss. It didn't stop until I used my handgun (9mm Hornady Critical Defense HP) and nearly removed its head. Personally, I won't even use them as a snake load.

    I've been using these with much success on my backyard rat problem. My latest victim was a large female that was eating birdseed 15 feet away--about the limit of range for this ammo. She went down with no thrashing other than a small case of "helicopter tail." I capped another rat inside the garden shed from about three feet, and it opened him up pretty well, which tells me that there's not a lot of shot spread at that distance. Rifle used was a Valmet M49 youth rifle with a 20" barrel. These things are pretty loud in a revolver, but in the rifle they made about as much noise as an air rifle, so one small "bang" in the evening isn't likely to upset the neighbors. You'll definitely want to wear eye protection when using this stuff in a confined area.

  • @kennethcox421

    Seriously this ammo does its job and shouldn't be expected to be something it is not. I have used this and similar ammo for rodent control for years. I know what it will do and I am thankful to have it especially as our rural area moves closer and closer to urban environment. I have used this prescription on grey squirrels that damage my crops and property. At two to five yards with an old Winchester model 67 .22 rifle or an old single action .22 revolver they are the right ammo at the right time; no worries about the projectiles traveling into the neighbors yard and the squirrels stop inflicting damage. When I met a rattlesnake in the dim light of the saddle shed I was especially appreciative to have this ammo on hand.

      Thats why i don't use them. If I could get a 6 inch pattern at 5-10 yards that would be great, and maybe 2 inches of gel penetration as I want clean kills.(no need for the sand size shot even on rodents.) Until I own such a mini shotgun I will keep testing various subsonic mono-rounds. I want enough energy to reliably kill larger rats but still low enough the 3/8" plywood sides of my shed or chicken coop can act as backstop.

    If used with a rifled barrel, it will only be useful for a maximum distance of 3 feet, but with a smooth barrel, the distance and penetration of the shot increases greatly and can be useful up to 15 to 20 feet. There are special rifles for this ammunition and they are garden rifles widely used for pest control in stables which, due to their short range, do not damage anything that may be behind the rodent or the roof sheets if used to eliminate pigeons.

    what could have caused it to spread so much is the barrels rifling
    a rifled barred would increase the spread of the shot so if you plan on making a update video use a smooth bore barrel. and yes they do make 22 smooth bore barrels

    Nice video, good info. Probably best to use this ammo in a revolver since it is under powered and only good at close range, I load similar rounds for use in my GP100, we have a healthy population of water moccasins where I hunt and at times they can be aggressive.

    tnoutdoors9> There is also another use for this load that I have never seen mentioned. I have heard many people say that they do not have a gun for self defense because they do not believe that they could shoot someone even if they are breaking into their home. This gives that person a new option. They can buy a revolver (because of cycling issues in an automatic) and load the first chamber with a shotshell and the rest with normal ammo. Now they can pull that trigger in defense and not have to worry about sending a lethal projectile into another humans body. If that shotshell does not stop the intruder I think that the possibility of that homeowner pulling the trigger again becomes so much easier. Just my thoughts.

    I shot a 4 foot long, 4 inch thick water moccasin in the face at 6 feet distance, from a Ruger MK2 pistol. It wriggled in place for a few seconds, and died with a pool of blood under it's head. The snake was in a friend's garage. I cast and make my own ammo, including snake shot rounds in various calibers, but the CCI rounds are quite effective and less likely to cause damage to property when shooting indoors. My friend was very grateful.

    As a kid, I had a Belgian rolling block shotgun in .22 caliber. Without the lands and grooves of rifling in the bore, it would group .22 shotshells pretty well. At 15 feet, they would make about a 2" pattern. We also used .22 lead dust shells. They didn't group as well but put many a rat out of his misery. There were also sand loaded shells for the same purpose, and they would really clean out the fouling. America should make these shotguns, they'd sell plenty.

    Over the years gun companies made smooth bore .22 rifles that make those shotshell patterns tighten up quite a bit. I've used them on chipmunks at about 5-6 feet and with head shots were pretty effective. I can tell you I shot a red squirrel inside a wooden shed about 7-8 years back with a .38 Special CCI shotshell, I was no more than 5 -6 yards away, it literally looked like there was an outline of the shot around the squirrel. He was pretty peppered himself but it didn't kill him outright, I found him later and he was hit by a few of them, didn't really impress me.

    Many years ago, when I my Uncle Sam decided to station me in the Mojave Desert. For desert hikes, I carried a Ruger Single Six, loaded with two rounds of these snake loads, and four rounds of regular 40 gr cartridges. I could usually just avoid the rattlers when doing a day hike. No need to shoot them if they weren't bothering me. But setting up camp for the night seemed to be an open invitation to scorpions and such. That's when this stuff came in handy, but be forewarned, it's only effective out to about 5 yards max. I've always felt this would be much more effective in a smoothbore rifle. I've seriously considered finding an old plinker and smoothing out the bore from just beyond the headspace to the muzzle. I am guessing that without the twist, the shot might be effective out to 10 or 15 yards, but that's just speculation. I'd love to hear if anyone has tried this in a smoothbore.

    No .22 long rifle rimfire shot cartridges will pattern well when fired out of a rifled barrel, regardless of barrel length. I have found 5-6 feet to be the maximum 'useful' distance for .22 rimfire shotshells no matter if fired from a handgun or rifle. The key is the rifling imparts such spin on the shot charge that it blows the pattern out too much and disperses the shot pellets to the point that the pattern is pretty much useless beyond 5-6 feet. Contrast that to patterns obtained with my Remington Model 510 smoothbore .22 rimfire 'rifle': that gun will throw patterns dense enough at 25 feet or so to dependably dispatch rats and other small pests. I have also found the 'crimped style' .22 long rifle shot cartridges generally pattern better than the 'plastic nose cap' type .22 long rifle shot cartridges. I have used my Remington Model 510 smoothbore .22 and .22 long rifle shot cartridges many times to dispatch rats, starlings, etc. in my barn long as the distance is kept within 25 feet or so it is quite effective.

    I used this to euthanize a small snake that had gotten trapped on a rat glue board. It's absolutely devastating on very small animals... if you care (or can) get very close to one. Like point blank range! The rifling just opens up the shot pattern too much to be effective past two yards. Otherwise I'd stick to a 410, or an accurately placed .22. Or even an air gun. I took out a possum once with a .177 pellet to the cranium.

    Since the barrel of a .22 is rifled, the rotation of the bullet will disperse the shot as soon as it leave the muzzle, making it impractical for any range greater than what we see in the video. @Harry Kuheim:
      With respect, this is an EXTREMELY poor idea. If anyone is unfortunately compelled to use a firearm to protect himself (or other innocents), the goal is abundantly clear: to incapacitate the threat instantaneously (or VERY near instantaneously). Admittedly, this may not always be achievable; however, in my opinion, one should NEVER select a defensive system (firearm, ammunition, sights, holster, weapons light, tactical approach, and so forth) that is DESIGNED to ensure multiple rounds - and, even worse, considerable time - are required to stop the felon. This is precisely what you have suggested and it is a most dangerous proposal.
      The potency, velocity, design, mass, shot pattern, and so forth of this ammunition absolutely does not ensure an immediate threat elimination; in fact, it does precisely the opposite. Equally bad, this load likely will not cycle many semiautomatic weapons. What do you think the barely wounded criminal will do to you, to your family, or to other innocents while you manually recycle the firearm to fire second, third, fourth, etc. rounds? This will take several seconds and in that time the felon can - and probably will - kill or seriously injure you and/or other innocents. For this exact reason, your recommendation is unbelievably foolhardy.
      The key point is simply this: In extremis, defensive success REQUIRES the instantaneous cessation of the threat(s). Consider, for example, the FBI’s 2006 Miami debacle and you’ll clearly understand that elimination (death, in this case, of the two criminals) of the threat in even a very few minutes allowed two Special Agents to be killed and several others to be severely wounded. We all pray never to be in a situation where we are required to kill or severely wound a criminal to protect innocent life; however, if one is ever compelled to do so, then he must eliminate the threat(s) VERY quickly (within seconds).

      can. A person would be better off with OC spray than this IMO.

    These work much better from a smoothbore or a Rutledge bore. At one time these guns were commonly available. Puts .22 shot shells in an entirely different league.

    Ooohh, the good old days! I used to fire these in my Grampa’s old Winchester 1897 (pump action), re-chambered to .22LR.

    To hell with this. Go get a cheap pump action shotgun, get some of the cheapest shells available, break the shells open, load them with a mixture of about 25% salt, 25% sand and load the tip with 50% fecal matter. Why? If the salt doesn't kill the varmint the infection it causes will. Sounds crazy but it works.

    When I was a kid, my grandad used an early version of this "birdshot" to dispatch sparrows and swallows who took up residence in his tin roofed shed. He used them because the shot would not penetrate the metal and cause leaks, whereas his "pump up" air rifle occasionally would penetrate if you gave it a couple too many pumps. You had to be within 12-15 feet to kill the feathered intruders. All in all, pretty lame, especiallyfor the price.

    I've used these several times to dispatch rats in and around the house. First rodent had taken up residence under the laundry-room sink and was quickly taken care of with one shot from my Ruger SP-101 revolver (loud!). Later "safaris" used a 20" single-shot rifle, which worked just as well and was much quieter. Ranges were all between three and five feet.

    good stuff in the marlin garden gun. a smooth bore .22.

  • @polomare2027
    @polomare2027 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have better groupings when you shoot these out of a smooth bore garden gun. A rifled barrel causes the bullet to spin on exit, which is why your patterns are so scattered even at close range. These shot shells are highly effective at up to 15 feet in a smooth bore. Wish they'd print that on the packaging, because almost no one seems to get this.

    Fun video. I still have some of these purchased 20+ years ago. I used to shoot at mice with my Winchester 1906 gallery gun. They are absolutely worthless, except for a chuckle.

  • @markvaz1961
    @markvaz1961 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have used them out of an old Smith K-22 with a 6" barrel on mice in my barn. From about 6' away, they will kill them cleanly, and do no damage to the walls behind them. They do no harm to the gun, just clean it as you would any gun and figure on a little bit of plastic residue in the rifling like a shotgun wad would leave.
    The .44 mag shotshell will do in a snake at the same distance, but will also damage plywood walls in a barn or garage so don't use them under such circumstances.
