the best fender custom shops are : my partscasters ( tele and strat ) , easy to build these day's , you can buy and type off body , neck , pre loaded pick guard , hardware , ect . on the web , then put it all together , do you're own set up ( wich in my view is something every selfrespecting guitarist should be able to do ) and you're done , it's saves a shitload off money and you don't have to wait 1-2 years for a guitar wich is way to expensive anyways .

But I don’t think a high end Taylor is going to sound much worse than one of their custom guitars. What are your thoughts on that? Driftwood actually used your video of the Taylor factory to laugh at the Taylor v class Taylor makes. I know I keep asking questions but I find this stuff so interesting. Brilliant video! I think the best thing you implied here is it's always better to get another perspective. We all think we know what we would like, but often there's something we're not seeing. For instance, I always thought I knew what I wanted from my 'ideal guitar' until I bought a custom shop Strat. My first guitar had a U shaped neck and I absolutely hated it, so I've always gone for slim necks. But when I got my CS Strat it had a mid-60s 'chunky' C shaped neck. However the rolled fretboard edges made such a difference. It's an absolute dream to play! I think all Fender CS dealers should invest this time with their customers when it comes to builds, a happy customer is a customer who comes back. Thank you once again for a great video!
Nicola thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful sharing here. It is a journey and one that can be very expensive if you don't have the right team to help. Thank you for sharing and have a super super day!
@@tonepilot they smooth off the edges of the fretboard along the top & bottom, making them rounder. This makes the guitar neck more comfortable to play.
Jesus, if you're going to Masterbuilt because you have to have stainless steel frets or pickup combinations, you may want to rethink priorities. $3000 upcharge is a big much. Plus at 68 months on the outside of build time, I think you could have ordered and been playing a new Dumble in less time... I've been a luthier for 15+ years, and I'm still blown away by $7000 & 8000 Strats and Teles. They are still slabs of alder with a maple neck bolted to it. And yes, the neck is probably going to have the most consistent effect on the tone from one guitar to another. With Les Pauls I find a more consistent tonal difference between the slim 60 and rounded 50's than I do with solid body vs chambered vs weight relieved. Though I do find chambered tend to be brighter than the other 2.
I agree, Tim. In the end, Fender's are slabs of wood bolted together. What they are charging for their Custom Shop guitars is outrageous to me. And don't get me wrong, I love Fender. But, with that $3,000.00 upcharge for a Masterbuilt, just think of what you could pick up used on Reverb. You could buy your Teambuilt and have another sweet guitar, as well.
Custom shop guitars have a certain flair but I'm happy with my 59 stratocaster thin skin from 2008, nitro lacquer, 54 custom pus, 7,5 lbs and a 9'5 radius ("poor" man's custom shop)

Great video. I love FCS guitars, own three, would love to have more. One minor peeve I have with the relics is the very rusty hardware. It looks bad and isn't correct--if you look at 60-70 year old Fenders they don't have rusty hardware.

Medium jumbo frets with hand-wound 58's and or 63 pickups with a soft-V neck are what I would be going with if it's a Strat with the '63 body to start. It also should be ash and with a black aged body and white or mint pickguard. If it's a Tele, I'm going for exactly what Jonathan said in regards to the bridge pickup, but would like a PAF-type humbucker in the neck position to get a bit of a Keith Richards-like tone but not too wild. I'd also go with a '52 ash body to start it off with a (and yes, I know, it's basic as hell) black-guard aged butterscotch finish and with a 4 way switch with the controls flipped over so the pickup selector is further away than the typical setup. Both would need to have aged maple fingerboards as well. That's just a preference for myself, but that's the beauty of it all...you can get what you want if you have the money and the patience!! Also...I would choose Todd Krause as my guy even if it takes longer for me to get em. Ron Thorn also would be on my list too, but I really love what Krause has done in the past. Great video! When y'all pointed out to me that getting a Josefina in a fairly basic 51 P bass build idea I had y'all look at would move it from team built to masterbuilt I had to really think hard. Is that pick up really worth a 3k increase? Should I just go team built with a handwound 55 P pickup like in my CS Time Machine 55 P? (which is awesome) Or should I, if I'm going to pay the upcharge, make it worth it and get more creative and put some real thought into it? I decided to hold off a couple years til my 50th birthday, and maybe take the MB plunge. Y'all did a really great job in just that short interaction I had with you. Better than other's I've seen. (I went through a quote process about 7 years ago before stumbling on my CS 55 P barely used and couldn't pass it up) When I finally do get around to ordering it. Even though you're so far away. You're definitely getting my business. Keep up the great work!
You can get Josefina pickups in team built guitars! No need to go masterbuilt for that option. I have two team builds on order now, both done in the last two months and they’ve got Josefina pickups in the order. Sorry if I wasn’t understanding your comment correctly!
@@mattwork99 interesting, that’s not what I was told. I wonder if it’s different because I was ordering a Bass and they have less options at the teambuilt level. I know Fender in the past ten years at every level really started treating Basses like an afterthought as opposed to just as important as the guitars like they used to when Mike ran the shop. So bassists getting less options wouldn’t surprise me.
@@danielphillipsmusic9145 sadly I think you’re correct. The bass may be the issue. I took a quick look at the custom shop order form on their web site and while it’s not 100% clear, there didn’t look to be a Josefina option on the bass pickups. It’s there for Strat/Tele. And to be even more confusing they did pull the Josefina team built option on ALL guitars for some time. In fact many videos mention it as not an option anymore. No idea when they brought it back, but I can at least confirm for strat/tele it’s an option.
The tele in my avatar has fender “original vintage” line pickups. They are definitely distinct and amazing. They were stock on the 52 avri from the 2000s to 2012. They definitely changed after that.
I literally watch all of your videos…like binge watch them while I’m practicing and getting blazed…what I wouldn’t do for you guys to do a FCS video on BASSES, especially the new one..the P Bass special looks awesome, but why is it so much more expensive than other team built basses.?
Thanks a ton for that and you have a great idea there. We have been talking about doing some on the old basses. And yes those are a but more expensive. We will check to see what is going on with those prices. And yes again..they were really cool!
You can sort for light weight which gets you in a ballpark...or you can select an exact weight which will set you back way more than I think is worth it:)
do you have any input on the difference between brass bridge saddles trem block, headstock nut compared to modern materials used when it comes to sustain and tone ? there seemed to be a brass rush in the mid to late 70's that continued into the next decade for a while
Rough idea if I ever had the cash to ever get a Fender custom Shop, reverse offset body 24.75 scale either a electric 12/maverick headstock or jaguar headstock. Bound neck with blocks, rosewood fingerboard. Lollar goldfoil in the neck slanted like a Mosrite neck pickup. Jazzmaster in the bridge with jaguar/jazzmaster trem system. In Sherwood green. Think it would just be too wacky to work and I should stick with my Eastwoods?
It's hard to figure out which specs you like. I don't know if other shops do this but I wish my locals would have a spec tag on the guitars so if i'm playing something I like the feel of, I could take a look at what exactly it is. Most time I end up on my phone searching for the guitar in my hand and I feel like that shouldn't be necessary
I just bought a fender strat cs 60’s nos. The neck on it is too fat. Hurts my hands playing it. The advice Sweetwater gave. Keep playing, it will get better. Your thoughts?
Love these type of videos! Random question, you mentioned that stainless steel frets would only be a Masterbuilt option, what about a modern truss rod? A truss rod adjustment located on headstock. All the relic custom shop guitars I see have them located at the heel.
im the guy from Vermont Waiting on a Ron Thorn Masterbuild AKA Thors Hammer !!! So excited for when the time comes to drive down and see the fellas and slay my %$#@*&
My two favorite guitars I own are Fender CS Teles, a 51 and a 60 Custom. Neither would have probably been what I ordered if given the options, but they're perfect for me.
My luthier and I have been building great guitars. They're all parts casters. Frankly I'd put my Strats against anything ever built. Do the science. Save a ton and dial it in.
If I have to wait 6 years for a guitar or amp I'm looking elsewhere. I'm not a Fender fan anyway but I still wouldn't wait that long for a Gibson Custom shop. I wouldn't forget about the guitar and it would drive me crazy knowing that I have a guitar on the way.....in 6 years! Lol
It is nuts...that's for only two of their master builders and they just have such a wait list that it will be impossible for them to catch up. But damn their pieces are amazing!
When the time comes for me to get a custom shop, I will definitely buy from Casino. I know it will definitely be team built. But Tele or Jazzmaster? British Racing Green JM or 50’s Style Nocaster Blonde Tele with a humbucker in the neck? But like I said, when the time comes it will be bought from Casino. And I will pester them with questions throughout the whole process.
Do you folks accept orders from customers abroad? I’m UK based and have a good bunch of stores here I could through, but I feel the customer service would be a bit more personal through you folks! Not sure if there would be any crazy tax stuff though 🤔
Would you be able to get a 24” scale length tele on a team build? Or a master build? The only thing I would be sure of if I ever got a custom shop is the color: if I’m spending that money, it’s gotta be daphne blue over pink paisley!
I prefer to relic my guitars myself, here's how get a case of beer a bag of pot brush up on your favorite Who songs dry hump your amp while your playing full blast and within no time you will have a relic guitar full of YOUR memories
Thankfully i bought my two Fender Custom Shop strats years ago before todays crazy prices. The first was a Fiesta Red "Hank Marvin" and had to go for a masterbuilt to get the spec i wanted. it was stunning when i eventually received it. The second went badly wrong. it was a team built Bonnie Raitt Strat, and after waiting almost 2 years, i was in tears when it arrived, the blue burst finish had no burst at all, it was covered in fine scratches, all the screw heads were chewed up, a small but visible ding in the headstock. I rejected it, and thankfully the dealer helped me to get Fender at their expense upgrade the order to a masterbuilt, 18 months later i had the guitar as it should have been. I hope my experience of a team built is a rare, but i have heard of other buyers rejecting them. Today i would never order any more from Fender, the prices are way too high with no guarantee of the quality of what you will receive. For the same price of a team built, i have found an excellent luthier capable of building a master built guitar at less than team built prices. I realise that since they are not Fender Custom Shop models ,they will never sell for anywhere near the same price, but they are keepers, and are a delight to play. You pays your money and take a big chance.
Casino Guitars, how long does it usually take to get a response from Fender when you send off the Custom Shop paperwork? What is the turn around time to get the quote back from them?
Preston it can be all over the place. If you are lucky...within a day or two. But more likely it can be anywhere from 1 week to quite a few. They just get slammed over there sometimes! But rest assured, everyone is trying to get them done as soon as possible.
I have many types of new and used guitars ranging from 400 - 4k USD and just can't land on one preference, so it would not make any sense for a custom build. I really want a tele and explorer but need to decide which current guitars to part with, or perhaps time to move some pedal 8-).
Did I just hear that you can't get SS frets on a Team Built? Also, what are the deposit requirements? 50%? 25%? (Does it depend on how weird the build is?) Thanks!
I really wish if you were buying something as spendy as a custom shop that they would send out like hand sized neck profile samples. Id pay for it too just to make sure id get exactly what i like.
How does a Fender Custom Shop compare to something like a Sadowski? They're both hand made, bolt on guitars, how much difference can there really be? How much can either company innovate within the very tight constraints of a Strat guitar or a Jazz bass?
I have seen the pieces at the FCS improve dramatically over the past few years really putting a strain on a large number of the boutiques. Both there are great companies though!
@@danielphillipsmusic9145 Yes they are. Especially when they black and bound in the sorta faded looking white binding. No idea when they brought it back, but I can at least confirm for strat/tele it’s an option.
I just did a strat order I. Dec and Josephinas are masterbuilt level now
@@scottschmidt5198 I did one in January 2022 and one yesterday. Both allowed Josefina team built pickups. Guessing they added it back in 2022 orders.
The tele in my avatar has fender “original vintage” line pickups. They are definitely distinct and amazing. They were stock on the 52 avri from the 2000s to 2012. They definitely changed after that.
Every now and then Fender has an amazing set of pups in a production model and they are amazing. Well done on that one!
I have a 2016 team built ltd '58 jazzmaster. That thing is sweet.
Nice piece there!
Great video guys,
What is that black & white strat back there?
:) That was one a friend painted for me just this week for my birthday...funny thing is my birthday is in August...but I'm not telling anyone:)
I am refinishing a Telecaster sun burst or should I do a metallic red wt and blue with a matt finish!?
Pink with purple polkadots
Metallic!
Will they put a Tele bridge pickup in a Strat?
What about weight? How specific can you be? Great video.
You can sort for light weight which gets you in a ballpark...or you can select an exact weight which will set you back way more than I think is worth it:)
Great work, wish I could get one.
Thank you very much and maybe one day:)
Daintily indeed

Good info right here
Glad it was helpful!
do you have any
input on the
difference between
brass bridge saddles
trem block, headstock
nut
compared to modern materials used
when it comes to
sustain and tone ?
there seemed to be a
brass rush
in the mid to late 70's
that continued
into the next decade for a while
Rough idea if I ever had the cash to ever get a Fender custom Shop,
reverse offset body 24.75 scale either a electric 12/maverick headstock or jaguar headstock.
I say yes...I love the weird ones!
My Squier bullet is perfect.Just new tuners.
Im more of a Classic Vibe guy:)
Do you pay up front or as the build goes on
It's hard to figure out which specs you like. I don't know if other shops do this but I wish my locals would have a spec tag on the guitars so if i'm playing something I like the feel of, I could take a look at what exactly it is. Most time I end up on my phone searching for the guitar in my hand and I feel like that shouldn't be necessary
My Tomatillo strat has a 63 C neck, can confirm it's a very nice neck profile haha.
Nice! I do love those!
Did not know you shipped to the uk could be tempted lol
did you get the contrasting esquires ?
I just bought a fender strat cs 60’s nos. The neck on it is too fat. Hurts my hands playing it. The advice Sweetwater gave. Keep playing, it will get better. Your thoughts?
Dang I haven’t had fried okra in too long, thanks for the reminder!
Great video ... thanks guys!!
i wanna get another CS i want Jimis EXACT monterey pop red strat that he sacrificed but i want it LEFT HANDED.
You guys totally had your "Do you want to go do karate in the garage???" Moment there with your matching Esquires lol
Man that made me smile:)
What if you want a wood that you lot only ever offered once, and even then just for a brief second? I'd love a matching pale moon tele bass.
Bah. I just looked at the design guide. No dice on the Royal Ebony fretboard.
?? do you ever have
the Wide Range
pick-ups
requested for
Stratocaster builds'
Love these type of videos! Random question, you mentioned that stainless steel frets would only be a Masterbuilt option, what about a modern truss rod? A truss rod adjustment located on headstock. All the relic custom shop guitars I see have them located at the heel.
Truss rods are not master build to go modern:) And hopefully the stainless steel frets will change back soon to team build!
Can you still order an Elite Strat?
Would an apprentice build be cheaper?
An esquire is still my dream guitar. Maybe someday a team built will be possible.
I was just scheming with Jonathan about that today as well:)
im the guy from Vermont Waiting on a Ron Thorn Masterbuild AKA Thors Hammer !!! So excited for when the time comes to drive down and see the fellas and slay my %$#@*&
So CS vs aftermarket bespoken neck and body from a small bench builder?
My two favorite guitars I own are Fender CS Teles, a 51 and a 60 Custom. Neither would have probably been what I ordered if given the options, but they're perfect for me.
Will Fender custom shop do southpaw versions of anything and will the bill be more than the right handed counterpart???
99% of the time there is no uncharge for doing a custom shop left handed!
@@CasinoGuitars very cool. Thanks for the response
Lol
That's "Toan Time" you pay for though. /s 6 years is a joke. You can got to Medical School in less time. Alas, there's sucker born every minute....
"Toan" time??
It is nuts...that's for only two of their master builders and they just have such a wait list that it will be impossible for them to catch up. But damn their pieces are amazing!
17:11 Baxter: if anyone actually orders a 12 pound 1978 tele... I will hurt you.
Some of these decisions are intimidating!
We agree and that is why we really try to make it fun, easy to understand, and a great experience all around.
Inflation doesn't matter. They're already inflated.
Keep in mind all the musical greats from the past had of the shelf instruments.
Would you be able to get a 24” scale length tele on a team build? Or a master build?
The only thing I would be sure of if I ever got a custom shop is the color: if I’m spending that money, it’s gotta be daphne blue over pink paisley!
I have had some custom scale lengths before but I am not positive if that is still available in team builds at the moment.
I prefer to relic my guitars myself, here's how get a case of beer a bag of pot brush up on your favorite Who songs dry hump your amp while your playing full blast and within no time you will have a relic guitar full of YOUR memories
Relicing is stolen valor
@@216trixie yes you will not be allowed to enter Valhalla
You had me at the Vahalla bit:)
Thankfully i bought my two Fender Custom Shop strats years ago before todays crazy prices.
The first was a Fiesta Red "Hank Marvin" and had to go for a masterbuilt to get the spec i wanted.
it was stunning when i eventually received it.
The second went badly wrong. it was a team built Bonnie Raitt Strat, and after waiting almost
2 years, i was in tears when it arrived, the blue burst finish had no burst at all, it was covered
in fine scratches, all the screw heads were chewed up, a small but visible ding in the headstock.
I rejected it, and thankfully the dealer helped me to get Fender at their expense upgrade the order
to a masterbuilt, 18 months later i had the guitar as it should have been.
I hope my experience of a team built is a rare, but i have heard of other buyers rejecting them.
Today i would never order any more from Fender, the prices are way too high with no guarantee
of the quality of what you will receive.
For the same price of a team built, i have found an excellent luthier capable of building
a master built guitar at less than team built prices.
I realise that since they are not Fender Custom Shop models ,they will never sell for anywhere
near the same price, but they are keepers, and are a delight to play.
You pays your money and take a big chance.
Thank you for sharing your story there. I am happy it worked out for you in the end. We fortunately haven't had that experience too often.
I topped out with my American Original P and J. If I won the lottery that would change thou.
Sell the pedals...:)
Good stuff, y'all!
I almost get excited about building such a thing, then I look at my bank account...
17:28 I'd like to see some aztec gold over that cory wong translucent blue reliced
You have to jump to Master Built to get stainless steel frets??
Funk that.
How much is a CS with BAMF turquoise inlaid on the fretboard?
Did I just hear that you can't get SS frets on a Team Built? Also, what are the deposit requirements? 50%? 25%? (Does it depend on how weird the build is?) Thanks!
YEah thats weird.
I wouldn't buy anything without stainless steel frets
16:14 I'd like to see THAT headstock. :P
I really wish if you were buying something as spendy as a custom shop that they would send out like hand sized neck profile samples. Id pay for it too just to make sure id get exactly what i like.
We are actually working on making that a reality down the road. We are hopefully trying to make this an in-store thing with showcase dealers!
@@CasinoGuitars omg that is amazing! I bet everyone will like that
Could you do like a Maverick or another model that isn't in production?
Sometimes...those usually need special approval and tend to be master builds:)
@@CasinoGuitars Good to know!
@@CasinoGuitars a rising tide lifts all boats!
Cigarette burns on the headstock? I had a 65 neck 67 body tele that had some charring.
The only decision I would know for sure is that it has to be double bound Tele.
Good cal!! Double bound Teles are so classy looking!
@@danielphillipsmusic9145 Yes they are. Especially when they black and bound in the sorta faded looking white binding. I don't have a Tele with binding but I do have a cherry red 335 and sometimes I literally just sit and stare at the binding. My wife tells me she wishes I would stare at her like I do my guitars. LOL!
Nice, love the binding on the tele's!
My tele is custom like that and it's the mother of all teles. Nobody's is nicer imo.
If you get a team build, do they tell you who worked on it?
Someday I will own a NOS ‘64 purple metallic Strat
How long does the actual build take?
Why don’t they eliminate the middle man? Why does the shop need to be involved?
Is Fender hiring more master builders? The queues keep getting longer and that can’t be good for the store or the customer.
More on that coming soon hopefully...:)
