Keep at roots!!!
That boat’s in great shape. Clean it up, rig it up, and go sailing.
This seems to be the consensus. 😁
You have the cleanest boat shop I have ever seen. Makes mine look so dirty. Love the skipper 20, I have a 1983 Montego 20 and I love it. It’s a 2300 lb boat and sails Lake Michigan beautifully. I’m currently building a 20 ft Paul Gartside designed cutter. I sail out of Holland and love the Great Lakes. Sailing is therapeutic, not a hurry and get there activity. If you have never sailed and like to go boating, I strongly suggest finding someone to sail with. I’m always happy to take people out. ❤
Welcome Aboard Randall! I hope you subscribe 😁 what a great little boat! Have you ever considered sailing your boat across Lake Michigan for some big water fun? I was thinking this might be a great challenge for the Skipper 20 once restored. And I’ve often thought someday there should be a Small Sailboat Adventure Challenge in the Great Lakes. Just like Water Tribe in a Florida.
Hi Joe. Great video, my friend. I love the boat and instantly though that she would be a great boat to take across the Atlantic.
Alan thank you so much. 😊 I have to agree. I think a competent skipper with some modification could achieve something like exceptional. I hope your travels continue safe. I’m watching from afar. Go brother ! Go far ! You motivate me 👍😁👍
Gotta admit, that think is cute as hell!!
😁👍
Pocket trawler would be cool ! Great videos thanks 🇨🇦
😎👍
Love it! Just started a 73 Newport Holiday 19. Replaced ALL the wood, transom, stringers ect. Full resto! Trying to keep the momentum going. Thanks for the wisdom 🤘
Welcome David! Hang in there and keeping moving forward. Can’t wait to see what you’ve accomplished 😁👍
Please keep the boat a sail boat, that is if you are a sailor. Many people are not. And so sailing is slowly becoming a thing of the past. It is not how fast you are, or how you need to get to your destination asap. It's the love of learning new things and adventure. You also learn patience. Whatever you do give olive oil love. All the best greg.
Is that a vote for original or motorsailer?
You can’t cast two votes Greg!😁
American people want electric vehicles and fuel hogging cigarette boats. Not green sailboats
The wife doesn't appreciate that under sail is a journey experience, much like train travel, hiking, exclusions are high-speed trains.
You don't go well, go from A to B, in a set time frame.
It's a travel that will unfold at the universe's pleasure, not yours.
And the pleasure lies there, even if, hours overdue.
Sailing is true freedom.
Out of my ❤. Tom from switzerland 👋🏻
Adding too much additional superstructure could affect the stability of the boat. I wouldn’t do it.
Love that little sailboat just the way it is. It would look nice sailing along the west coast of Florida where it was born.
Exactly. 😎Be sure to subscribe Bob and tell a friend. Thank you
I'm so glad to have found this channel today. Keep up the good work! 👏
Welcome Aboard Danilo😁
About 3 years ago I bought lil aluminium sail boat OVNI 25 constructed by chantier navale Alubat FR in 1978. The previous owner crossed the Atlantic from the Meditaranian to the West Indies SXM with this tiny lil thing. Chapeau ! Amazing
I love it! I absolutely love the French OVNi sailboats. Were I to take to the seas tomorrow it would be in a French aluminum centerboard 👍😁

Brilliant little channel, you are so lucky to have that great shop to work in . I love the idea of a small pilot house. Good luck with the channel .
Thank you John. Be sure to like and subscribe. Wait till you see what’s next 😁👍
With the beautiful lines on this boat, the potential is off the charts. I have a 26’ ex Navy Whaleboat I am restoring. The lines of a boat are the most important aspect of a good boat.
You do nice work. Thanks for sharing your skills!!
Thank you for the great compliment and I agree. There is something about the lines that make me smile😁
i like the pocket trawler and the pilot house .pretty cool ideas.
Thank you Vince. Be sure to subscribe to see what comes next. You’re gonna love it 😁
Maybe so !
Years back I read the first person account of a young sailor from the west coast who sailed his 27' MacGregor Sailboat to Hawall from his home in Seattle, alone.
It was called "The Log of the Mahina".
Great read & his journey was fraught with peril !
So much so, reading it made me simultaneously want to become & avoid such an endeavor !
😁
Definitely a pilot house 😊
I hear you!👍👍
What a little gem. Love your shop. I own a Alberg design south coast 21. Thanks for sharing!.
What a great boat! Be sure to subscribe and check out the Werkers. Werks get a free copy of my classic sailboat restoration book 😁👍 patreon.com/MotorCityBoatWerks
I love the shape of the hull
I know just awesome 🤩
Just found your channel and loved the video. What a crackin' little boat! I get the pilot house idea, but I think it would be a shame to convert her to a motor boat, but that's just me. Looking forward to following your efforts. Greetings from an old sailing enthusiast in South Africa. Subscribed.
Welcome Aboard Cousin Jack!
It does seem a shame to remove the sailing ability 😎
Hello Joe. She's a salty-looking boat. I like the rub rail. Stay well from Joe in AZ
Thanks Joe ! Should be a fun side project reject. Stay tuned 😎
Wow, what a fantastic little sail boat. Pilot house would be fantastic. New subscriber here. Would love to see here sail. Can’t imagine she would point too high but a lot of fun and more sea worthy than her size would indicate I’m sure.
Thanks Darryl! Be sure to subscribe to see what happens next 😁
I looked at this boat several times. I am so glad it is in your hands. I am sure it will turn out great.
Thanks Wade! I will give it my best shot. I think you’re going to be quite pleased 😀
I get where you are at. I've worked on boats for 58 years. Sometimes you see one (don't need it) and you just buy it. "There is nothing better than messing around with boats. I've got a 1989 22'Hurricane deckboat which took 3 yrs. to find a 90 Merc.now it looks like new....total cost $2100.
Also a 17"Slipper (very traditional design) $2k.

Joe, you are my boat restoration momentum guru and I love that you bought another boat to restore. Whatever keeps you motivated right. Gonna be great to follow this.
Really like the planked hull retro look, my grand banks has that as well. Keep it up!

Great video wonderful little vessel. I own an albin 25 Deluxe Built-in Sweden in late 70s. Blessings to you and yours coming at you from Southern Oregon
Welcome aboard and Thank you sir! I am currently looking for an Albin 25 owner who will accept my Albin 25 Challenge for an upcoming episode featuring the amazing Albin 25. I promise this will be a great piece we can both be proud of. Could you be the one? Please email me for details 😃
Micro pocket cruiser w full pilot house conversion!!
Vote counted !
Great little boat. My advice is to keep it as a sailboat no matter what you decide. Adding the pilothouse top or hard dodger would be sweet, especially if you connected a bimini with side curtains for a full cockpit coverage. I can think of many great little adventure with a boat like that in New England where we sail our boat.
Sounds great! Thank you for your vote
@@motorcityboatwerksI vote on keeping her as a sailboat also. Maybe a hard dodger depending upon where and how you plan to sail her. Also think about a breakdown tent type enclosure for the cockpit for staying overnight at anchor or close to shore on lakes or lake island camp spots. She has an abundance of character, it would be a shame to lose it. Especially if adding height and weight that would make her tender on the water.
*Second idea as an addendum to my vote: Go big! Start a new business venture! Make a complete mold of her, both top and bottom shells. Then bring her model back to the market as a trailer sailor/ pocket cruiser. Sell completely finished boats. In addition to offering just the bare hulls with the topsides, (decks, cockpit, and cabin top.) Basically all molded In features that would allow the purchasers to then finish themselves to a standard and budget they can afford.
Next step, achieve success. Now talk to James Baldwin (Atom Voyager), about bringing a new design to the market. With a small sailboat similar and comparable to the ones he refits. Incorporating all of his design ideas, innovations, and refit improvements. Which results in a tremendously capable blue water, adventure sailboat. That is comfortable, and easy to sail single-handed. Then disrupt the market by bringing an attainable, affordable, and capable sailboat. One that does not price out the majority of the market. Those ooking to find an affordable and safe new boat to go cruising. However far or close that may be. So that’s my vote. Do all of the above or something like that. Lol 😂
That’s an ambitious plan! And one that might take more than one guy working in the Boat Werks! I will have to think about that 😅
Get it ready.. I'll sail it to Hawaii for fun...& Maybe on to Indonesia if everything looks good .
Love it! Be sure to subscribe
Out The Box all the way
Thats what I like to hear 😁
Two great projects
Love the lines on both
😁👍
What a beauty ! She would be just the thing for coastal cruising here in the UK. I would think about a spray hood , sort of keeps he original whilst adding weather protection.
Brilliant! 😁
I like it better than my 27' Ericson down here in St. Petersburg, Florida!
The only change I would do would be to rig it as a gaff rigged main sail like I have on the Ericson.
I have thought about that 🤔 but for the effort and simplicity the little rig as-is is probably the way to go. Keep working with the Ericson 27. Great boat 😃
Another vote for headroom; hope you add a pilot house.
Thank you for your vote. I think you will like what I come up with. 😁

Pilot house 😊 leave the sails 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Daniel 👌
What a fabulous little boat. I would love that project. I did a Victory 18 that had the hull pierced on both sides of the bow. It was pulled out of the water on a makeshift trailer. It was filled with water when recovered. The trailer supports up front pierced the hull as it settled on the trailer.
Sailed it several times after i repaired it. The problem was launching and retrieving. It required a twenty foot chain between the trailer hitch and the trailer in order to get it far enough down the ramp so it could float.
Thank you Terry. Victory 18 is fine boat. I have studied them may times and find them proper 😁
what an ace boat ,it will look great with red sails awesome
😳Black sails !
I congratulate you. That is a fantástic boat. Much its looks as the Lyle Hess Balboa. Very nice.
Thank you Antonio 😁Welcome Aboard. I always liked Lyle Hess designs also
Just a simple pilot house would suit this boat and keep it ideal for the solo sailor coastal cruising and more. looking forward to see the project evolve, from the UK.
I think that's the plan. Welcome Aboard !
This is a beautiful boat love it ,with the design ,I really sea no reason why it can't be a world tripper love it.
Thank you ! It’s going to be an interesting project. Welcome to the Boat Werks 😎
I have one good flying fifteen (20 foot sail boats)and then a second one that is essentially just the hull. and been playing with the use of converting the old one to some sort of a lay down camper cabin with a dodger of some sort. Enjoyed this little squiz about this boat 👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent, stay tuned to see what comes next. I think you will enjoy it and it may give you some ideas 😎

I like this boat! I had a twin keel Holt Allen 16' sloop years back.
Nice. Beautiful boat 😊 thank you for the comment
That "Ask me how I know it" made my day :D. A very pretty salty sailboat, would be very nice with the pilothouse, but I think the trawler thing will be a loss. I'll follow your journey in restoring her, even if there's not much to restore. New subscriber here, greetings from Romania :).

When you mentioned Clearwater and it seems to have a similar keel ....skeel as the 16 ft. Compac , now I don't know if the 19 had opening ports . I use to have the 16 , what an easy , care free boat . You probably also know they did do a clever pilot house on the Compac 23 . I don't know how many are out there . I had a Luger kit boat that had come down from Lake Michigan , my uncle liked it so well he bought the 26 kit . He did a great job on it and to date it was my last boat . He use to haul it to Tavenier Key from Ohio but after he died I bought it from my aunt . I can be lengthy 😉
Indeed, thanks for the comment Steven. I just live small proper sailboats ⛵️ just like you 👍
The low headroom is reminiscent of the Nordic folkboat.
Right. I think it's a function of the proportional dimensions. There is only so much room in a shoal draft 20ft sailboat
I saw a sweet skipper 20 on Craigslist. I loved it! but I'm land locked
I hear you. Timing is everything. But fun to trailer to the water 😁
Absolutely I’ve crossed the Atlantic a few times on sail boats… admittedly not one this small but it will do the job !

back in the 60's I circumnavigated the Atlantin in a 24 foot bayliner biccaneer.
Nice 👍 great adventure
@@motorcityboatwerks yeah the first time was dideling around on the grand banks and kept going east till I hit the point of no return. My only choice was to go around. i had heard it was faster going the long way so I did. A couple of years I was nthinking it can't possibly take longer going through the doldrums, so I took the second trip. Yep it took three mponths longer.
🤩
Based on my experience restoring vintage European motorcycles, this is flipper for sure. Looks like it was respected and cared for. Good owner intensions but not used much. Outboard is evidence of that. Not abused or chopped up. Practical improvements using limited skills. Bring it back to life but don't over do it just because you know you can.
Another vote for the quick flip. However a pilothouse if done properly transforms this trailer sailer to a little big ship and increases the resale value by 3X
Its a happy looking cute boat with a name to match. I think the pilot house takes away from that. But I'm not a sailor. @@motorcityboatwerks
😳Cute is how we describe kittens or children with lollipops. The correct term is “salty”😁😂😂
I'd vote for a pilot house and keep it sail-able. Thats the kind of boat a person could sail solo and bop around from port to port for very little money. Would love to take it down to the keys.
I love it! We think alike 👍😁👍
Nice pilothouse it.
Thanks 😊
Cute boat👍🏽
We say salty. Cute is for kittens
@@motorcityboatwerks How ever that maybe, I still think it’s a cute sail boat😂
😁👍
Micro trawler for sure. Great description of what to look for. I am debating building from scratch a pocket trawler or buy and rehab an existing boat.
Mike I always suggest rebar an existing boat and choose fiberglass. For the DIYer it’s always easier and cheaper. And the likelihood of being able to sell or sell off your project should circumstances change-well it just make sense. Welcome aboard and Good Luck! Stay tuned 😎
Fiberglass older boats seem pretty cheap and sound. 😊
😎
Hello! Thanks for the video, i find your channel is great. Watching you from Kazakhstan. I think is pilot house is not necessary. This boat have brave by hes simplicity and minimalism. Just keep them with new rig and it will well sail on water.
Thank you Alex. Welcome Aboard 😁
I love the boats name "Olive Oyle".
😁
Cool boat and I love the new and you need to keep up with your health if you want to able to work on or get on any boat man Thanks for the video it was really interesting

Perky cute boat.
We like to say “salty”. Cute is how you describe a kitten. And we have not kittens in MotorCity Boat Werks

I am also a sailboat guy. I have a VN 23 that is showing its age. Thinking about 1) getting a smalller, eaiser to handle dinghy like a Daysailor, or 2) restoring the VN 23. Your channel looks like exactly what I have been looking for, thanks.
Welcome aboard! Keep that VN 23 a little bit longer and see if I don’t inspire you. 😄If you decide to let it go now worries.
An interesting project! Not sure what I would do to it. Take it for a sail in rough conditions and some things may become apparent.
Right! This is my next step. Let’s see how it sails and what can be done 👍
Please leave it a sailboat. I'd love to get something like that when I retire next year.

Son of a gun, I was seriously looking that boat. I work in TC, great snag!
👍
I watched that boat for a while on Craigslist, looks like I missed out on a Gem. I don't think you can lose on it any way you decide to go with it. Looking forward to seeing what you do with her.
I watched this boat almost a year sold to one owner than another. Perhaps it will be for sale again 😉
Definitely a protected water boat. That foam is likely there to limit the amount of water that can flood up through the motor well in certain sailing conditions. It is a known problem for that hull design. The fiberglass around the keel is also thin and failures from water freezing are out there on the forums. Curious to see what you think once you really get into it.
You may be right in several points. But I always marvel at the keyboard commandos who repeat opinions from Internet forums. This has happened with my Alberg 30, the Mustang 22, the Albin 27 pocket trawler. Misinformation and vox populi….
@@motorcityboatwerks No offense was intended. Every boat is a compromise in some way. As I said it will be interesting to see what you do with the project.
No offense taken😁 we enjoy robust and spirited discussion in The Boat Werks. Be sure to subscribe! Thanks and Keep it coming!😁
It's perfect for a daysailer. For a pocket cruiser the pilot house would be nice along with electronics and kitchen.
Was the great stuff installed because of water entering the space from the motor well? 😊
Fred I think you might be right. I will be discussing this during my live stream this weekend. Thanks for the comment 😁
A second reason for the great stuff would be the well was thought to be flimsy. And the great stuff was used to shore up the well.
Defitely not Great Stuff
It’s commercial close cell
If the well is sound, you could glass over the foam and fill the voids. Drain the water to the well. You could store fuel in the compartment. 😊
Thanks Fred. Please consider supporting the Boat Werks. These episodes would not be possible without your support patreon.com/MotorCityBoatWerks
I used to have a English built 17 ft LEISURE double bilge keel sloop....it was massively fibreglass built with good sitting headroom. In the earlier boats manufactured of fibreglass, they were overbuilt because it was a new product and they were built strong. I was told that my model crossed the Atlantic single-handedly by a German sailor.
Due to the lack of head room in your boat, I could see building it up with a pilot house. I wouldn’t like to live in the cabin overnight, crouched down.....but that’s only me...otherwise, she has beautiful lines....cheers🍷🇨🇦
Exactly, I think you articulated a reason for the pilothouse perfectly. This is perhaps the best argument why a pilothouse should be added. 👍
Yes it can.i crossed the atlantic 4 times in a 22 ft falmouth oyster dredger
Fantastic 👍I always a love to hear about small boat crossings.
First I've seen one of these and instantly fell in love with them, like a mini version of my Hans Christian...please for the love of god don't bastardize it and kill the lines with a pilot house or worse.
Pilothouse conversions if done properly are not dis-pleasing to the eye. The problem lies in the fact that most pilothouse conversions are hideously ugly. We will be discussing this further….
Love seeing old boats brought back to life...
My "Exwife" found a better "Deal" or another "D" word.
So I Located a 1969 Mako 19' (same year I hatched...)We are same age.
I pulled the cap and removed all the saturated floatation foam, Monster re-built the rotten Transom, 2-1/2" thick, and beefing up the stringers.
A few years into the project,. I'm getting back to working on it.
I shattered both bones in ankle so a set back for more than a year.
My plans are too much to even start to describe but it's a Full Resto.
But twin outboards is the 1st. on the agenda.
I have twin 60 gallon fuel tanks that I am fitting under the floor and adding a few extra stringers to corral the tanks.
I have float tested it with the mock up of the weights listed, but it will be a 1-2 people boat rather than 4-6 as original.
Also, in the recent year I obtained a saw mill, So I'm kicking around milling Eastern Red Cedar from my property that has died and still standing for the rest of the project.
Another 1 of a kind build from 50+ year old boat.
Will enjoy following your Build.
It's your ball of wax... make the candle that "YOU" want.
Cheers.
Wow what great projects you have. Welcome to the Boat Werks! Thanks so much and whatever you do Stay Motovated 😁👍
I wouldn't... But I'm close to 80. But, since you asked:
If flipping for profit is the aim, spruce it up, fix what's broken and sell it.
First vote for The Flip. Noted 😁 ✅
Raise the whole cabin roof by 8 inches, put in some forward facing portholes. Put in a mini galley, with small gimballed stove, fold out table and 2 good berths. Extend the engine compartment, put in a small diesel with generator and prop-shaft. Make an awning for the cockpit from 2 solar panels. Put in navigation systems and sounder, a shower, head and water-maker. Then actually cross an ocean as the title suggests it might.
I think if I was going to cross oceans, I’d stick with a sailboat. But your description of the micro trawler idea is interesting 😁
I would still keep the sails, as well as have a little diesel engine. If you had furlers on jib and main sails it would be a great one man off shore cruiser@@motorcityboatwerks
😎
I was stationed at Pensacola NAS in the early 70"s, my friend had a similar boat, he worked on it , (the base had facilities for guys to work on their projects) and would take it out into the Gulf of Mexico. When his enlistment was over he sailed it, (solo) to his home town of Boston
Fantastic! It sure seems like the sort of boat that's just begging for adventure. Thanks for the comment
I sailed around the world on a 43ft sailboat. We spent a year in St Augustine Florida getting ready to leave. There was a boat that came into the marina one day called little boat. It was an old wooden 20 something foot sailboat that looked like it was sinking just sitting still. It had barely any freeboard (distance from deck to the water line). It was tiny inside. We later saw them in New Zealand and i have no idea how they actually made it there in that boat. So you could cross oceans in almost anything but i wouldn't recommend crossing oceans in a 20ft boat. We encountered a massive storm on our way from Bermuda to Nova Scotia Canada. 30+ foot waves and over 55knots of wind for 3 days while sailing over the Grand Banks. The waves were breaking over the stern constantly and we were survival mode with a tiny storm jib up and surfing waves up to 14knots and then smashing into the back of the next wave making the boat want to broach. I cannot imagine getting through that in a 20ft boat.
Thank you for your comments! Wow what an amazing adventure😁 Please be sure to like and subscribe and Welcome Aboard 👍
I like the pocket trawler ides but it might make docking very difficult when it comes to the boat handling.
I'm thinking about a pilothpuse build on a J/24 of all things. It's wide and fast and cheap. Perfect for that, imo.
Welcome aboard ! 😁👍The Skipper 20 is destined for a Pilothouse Conversion. Check out the other Episodes about the design and theory.
@motorcityboatwerks Thank you, I saw it after I posted. Another thing I was thinking about, the Compac 23 Pilothouse looks like they literally just cut the cabin house on a regular Compac 23 and used the piece they cut out as the hardtop for the pilothouse. It just has me thinking about easy solutions and being able to keep the OEM looking sliding hatch. It seems that would be pretty easy on certain applications.
Check out my video on building the Compac 16 pilothouse conversion. That’s exactly one of the steps in my build. Not quite as simple as you think but it is the top sliding hatch repurposed. th-cam.com/video/RPys9TLfwqo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=cFGTZCymA9Wo2sSY
I would love to see a pilot house for more headroom. I'm retired and looking at getting a trailer sailer to enjoy but find the small yachts have not a lot of headroom for a taller person. Any way I think that little boat is beautiful!
I totally hear you. Be sure to some and subscribe so you don’t miss the interesting things I have planned 😁
Hi. First time Iv'e watched your channel. I'm about to purchase a locally built TLC 19 here in Cape Town South Africa, and I am also contemplating a pilot house or hard Bimini of some type. It already has a double opening companionway, which does make space to stand. Given your skillset, would raising the entire cabin be feasible? Find the best cut line, whether the whole cabin at the deck or just the cabin roof, lift an fill the gap. Thanks for the videos. I'll certainly be watching more.
Welcome Aboard Maarten!😎 Raising the deck or cabin is an advanced project that I do not recommend for a novice. While I might try such a project, I just think there’s a number of things that might go wrong and it really takes some planning and investment. I always recommend a pilothouse or hardtop instead as I just think it’s a more manageable project for a beginner. 😁👍
@@motorcityboatwerks I understand. I DID say with YOUR skillset tho... Although mine is also wide enough to attempt such a task with a reasonable degree of certainty, I dont think my boat is enough of a wreck to go chopping it up, lol. To be honest, that little boat is so close to perfect, I'd maybe spend 40 hrs on a cleanup, max. Mine, on the other hand...will need more than 40.
I’ve got plenty of project to keep me busy 😉
Permission to come aboard sir? New to your channel.
I think I would shy away from a trawler build. The over riding factor being center of gravity. But the pilot house concept turned my head, very tasty possibilities there. Nice little boat!
Welcome Aboard 😁👍welcome to the Boat Werks
the hull looks identical to a Dell Quay fisherboat, which were 20ft long, and came with a choice of wheelhouses, and cuddys to choose from, with choices ranging from totally open to the gunnels, to three quarter length wheelhouse, and the rest decked in, and any combination in between,
and with a choice of either an inboard, outdrive, or outboard with a well,
but i never saw any of them rigged for sail,
Interesting find! The Skipper 20 was reportedly made from a mold of a motor launch by Sovereign Sails in 1979 in Clearwater, Florida. The keel is not a bilge keel like the Dell Quay, but an integral encapsulated shoal draft keel.
I’m just in the process of a Fisher 25 . All advice welcome, ps disabled sailor 😎
Beautiful boat !
You kind of remind me of John malkovich when you speak pretty cool
😂😅
I want a MacGregor, strip all the sail rigging, load it up with solar and lithium, run a torqeedo, and do the great loop
That would be a great adventure 😁👍
Hi, I am from Crimea and I vote for spray hood. I am the happy owner of Saga 24.
👌😁 Welcome Aboard !
I just subscribed so I could follow your project. My vote is to leave it original. This also means get rid of the swim ladder. No "character". Looking forward to your videos.
If you get rid of the swim ladder how do you get back in the boat when you fall over board or go skinny dipping?
@@motorcityboatwerks I think that the person that sails that kind of a boat isn't interested in skinny dipping. That's why I recommended that. For falling overboard, if single-handed, you're supposed to be trailing a safety line. The swim ladder will be long gone (and useless) before you realize what happened.
Interesting idea. 🐙Thanks for the comment 👍
Check the ballast if you can I think it’s concrete as I think Compac used too . Fixed up a bit have fun in protected waters and no pilot house please ! Bad idea too much windage and will make it unstable. Unless you are a qualified naval architect please don’t go altering the dynamics of any boat . It is what it is a day sailor in fair weather.
Robert please see my Compac 16 pilothouse conversion and all my other boat restorations. A proper pilothouse conversion does not add too much windage or weight or make it unstable. I have already proven this. Thanks for your comments 😎
They probably put foam in the stern to dampen noise when at anchor
Yes this was my first thought 👌
It’s about the experience of the captain. More so than the boat
Very true 😁👍
Sweet little boat, certainly not meant to cross oceans the way its configured but it'd take a beating and a dunking and probably come upright again, which in why you should always consider its righting angle when you start chopping things up (pilot house) and adding extra weight above your water line and sheer. I love the hulls on these and like somebody in the comments mentioned its like a mini Hans C., they're built like ducks. My thought on a 'pilot house' thing, hm, to me a 10inch raised roof with a split 7-8" front window would be about as far as I'd take that, give a man enough room to strap into a comphy seat without bonking yer head and maybe have enough room to stand up out of the weather. As the design gets taller there become other factors than center of buoyancy due to added weight, like windage and wave-power (for which you'd have to make it tougher/add more weight). Then there's making it into a motoring vessel, which it'd probably make a fine pocket cruiser with decent range, but open ocean? Please don't unless you're like the crazy man sailing his six foot boat across the Atlantic a while ago (fail), or the small-boat solo masochists
Interesting points. But There’s no added weight or extra windage using the pilothouse conversion method. Please see my Compac 16 Pilothouse conversion video 😁👍
done mon.@@motorcityboatwerks
😁👍
Reminds me of the vision that Sven Yrvind and his small world sailing micro sailboats. I love it. I especially love aluminum Tom Colvin Gazelle and Doxy designs. Kinda like the SV Seeker Junk Rigged design. ✨ fiberglass is a hell no for me. But I do appreciate its design. Similar to Wave Rover II ⛵
Welcome to the Boat Werks 👍😎
What was the final purchase price ? I also watched this and many other as I have about 2 years until I totally retire.
very reasonable
After he sailed solo across the Atlantic, the tiny sailboat Sir Francis Chichester used was displayed in American shopping malls....Could not believe how small the thing was...@ 12 '.
Lol pretty sure it was bigger than 12 feet😆… Gipsy Moth III was 39ft, and his boat Gipsy Moth IV was 53 feet long purpose built ocean racer.
I would keep the boat original, the cabin is a cuddly cabin and designed for sleeping, not lounging in. I had a S.F. T.I Sloop that had a similar again and it was nice and cozy to sleep in. Otherwise, as a day sailer you are going to spend your time out in the cockpit, and the odd weekend aboard. A boom ten could be rigged for days of light rain, when at anchor. Cheers
One vote for original 👍
