I vote for hoop house. Living in Zone 4b, you could significantly extend your growing seasons in both spring and fall, increase production and sales and buy the peonies next year. You already have 253 peonies but you don't have any hoop houses! If I had 2,000 I'd invest in irrigation and soil amendments. And my question for you is - is there anything you know now that you wish you had known 2 years ago when you were first starting out?

    • @loriedunbar8722

Oh - follow-up question! I'd love to hear about how you marketed your flowers when you were first starting out. How did you sell your CSAs and start working with local florists when you were a new flower farmer? And thank you for being so generous sharing your experiences and what you've learned. You're inspiring and motivating!

yay Nicole Q&A Live. As for planting peonies, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Just do it. :) $2k peonies get em the ground. The hoop house will come in due time.

As for the hoop house vs peony dilemma. I know we would all love to see both and I know you’ve not wanted to do a patreon or a go fund me HOWEVER I know a lot of us who can’t buy bouquets from you and love seeing your flowers would love to put a few dollars towards peonies or a hoop house. If you could do a $1 Patreon or a go fund me or something it would help you to get both of what you want and the education of either of those things for all of us would be so worth the money. You could think of it as a Virtual Flower Friends bouquet subscription.
Just thought I’d pop in a comment about it because I can’t be the only one wanting to virtually support you.

    Patience pays off !!
My daughter moved up to her new farm place in June two years ago, that first summer was just getting the old farm cleaned up and a section of the huge house livable, so I planted my leftover seedlings in her yard, no till just put down cardboard and dug a hole through it, amazingly it did well. Then last summer she got a garden going, put up a fence, worked on the house, got chickens, ducks and a turkey and grew a ton of veggies. Now this summer she committed to the farmers market, sold a few CSA’s, got the LLC for her business and has seedlings for flowers and veggies galore……her dream is coming true !!!

Definitely get your peonies going ASAP. When you are able to get the hoop house you will feel at peace knowing your peonies are already in progress towards maturity. 🙌 I'm planning to start my 1st cut flower garden next year and I am enjoying the inspiration from your channel. Thanks for the fun motivation!

My first question is similar to Kirra's: How do you keep yourself organized? Binders? Spreadsheets (analog or digital)? If so, what kinds of things do you track or plan for? I ordered waaaay too many varieties of seeds for the coming year, and staying on top of when to start seeds, when to transplant, what to pinch or not, what I planted where and why, and so many other details seems overwhelming for ADHD me. I'd appreciate any concrete tips you can provide.
Second, related question: How do you track your expenses and ensure you profit? Seeds, fertilizer, and tools usually have clearly defined costs, but your time/labor, deliveries, and some other things are squishier or variable costs (for example, how do you determine what kinds of insurance to buy?). I know many flower farms take years to turn a profit, but my sense is you are seeing a profit this year (and maybe last?), and I'd like to take a bootstrapping approach to my tiny microfarm rather than running in the red for several years.
Thanks so much for your generosity in fielding questions, Nicole!

I’m sure you’ve done a video or post about this but I’d love to know how you organise what you will be growing for the season and how you plan your successions (aka what you use e.g a piece of paper or excel or something etc). I’m a super organised person but I’m really struggling with trying to plan successions because I just get SO EXCITED with flowers and just plant without thinking about the timing (I’m sure you can relate 😂).
I’d love to hear some tips for my little problem.

Oh yeah, I'm excited for your first live with QnA.
I will be there with bells on.
If I have 2,000 bucks, hum I will finish both end of the greenhouse I got 4 years ago in a deal. Then I could grow thing bbn inside this winter and start seeds innanlarge quantity if I have some sort of heating thing. I live in TX in zone 7b, we get very cold here and sometimes we get a good amount if snow and ice. But is not all the time. Maybe a week during the winter get very cold.

I'm gonna be the odd man out and say the hoop house. You can make more money upfront more quickly and the following year purchase half the peonies you want more of and then the next season the rest (or all of them if it's a good season of selling!). You'll be getting all of it in a few years span then while being able to grow with your business.

In all honesty, I think I would do the hoop house first. Because the potential income from the hoop house in the first year would provide your new peonies. It would only put your peony plan back by one year.

I grow most of my flowers and sell seeds on Etsy, now I have a small yard in a mobile home park and lots and lots of kitties, that was how I started collecting all the seeds and decided to sell. I am not rich by any means but for me it keeps me active and gives me so much to look forward to. I love flowers so much and I only have a small stand shelf/greenhouse, I would get the hoop house if I were you! I winter sow OUTSIDE and love doing this in Feb.....

I was not board, at all. Listening to you thinking through choices, regarding the future path of your business, is to me, exciting. I just want to say, never underestimate the joy of being able to choose. You have worked very hard to get where you are right now. Hard work, commitment, is paying off for you, and to see it, is exciting. Plus you love what you do, having choices now makes all that you have accomplished even sweeter.
I want to start flower farming. I have been seed starting, and succession planting, since late June, so not long. Nothing is planted in the ground yet, so that is not good. 3, 128 trays of sunflowers needed planting over a month ago. I have been working on my beds, that is going so slow, bc it is so hot. And actually, my other obligations have drastically affected my ability to spend time preparing the beds. Terminal, illness in my household, also caring for my grandson fulltime. I really started, to seed start, eventhough it was late June, to see if I could succession plant, get organized in that area of the business, get some practice. It was exciting starting so many seeds, experiencing a few common plants I have grown before as a gardener, you know, like a 6 or 8 pack of this or that, never had started them from seed before. So really my goal was to try succession planting, and I have some what achieved that goal. Began a list of habits to develop, and gardener habits to kill, slaughter, obliterate. Habits that will not lead to success as a flower farmer. And I see from this experience, I need a much better over all plan, and broken down details that supports that plan. Also, I badly need at least a tiller. I really, really, want one of those bed makers, really. The 2470 mulch layer! YES! But, I also do not have a tractor, so there is that. I would be happy with a tiller, with the potato hiller attachment to make the raised beds. I have been searching online used, found a couple in Michigan, there have to be some to choose from here in Virginia.
Nicole, I wish you and your family the very best health, and success with all your work, hopes and dreams. Thank you for excellent content. 🌻

I am having so much fun watching your flower farm adventures! AND I'm learning so much! Thanks for sharing your bubbly personality and your experience with us. I've set a reminder on my phone to remind me of your LIVE, so exciting. My question is about weeds in the wildflower patch. I tried one this spring in an old hayfield and it was a very embarrassing FAIL. I started with a clean slate, planted my wildflower seeds and waited. Immediately the weeds began an attack. I couldn't attack back because I couldn't even see the wildflowers yet! Eventually some very strong willed flowers poked their heads above the weeds. At this point, I weed whacked the weeds to try to prevent them from heading out and causing more weeds next year. But since that attempt I have given up, waved the white flag. The weeds won the battle. I wish you could see the pathetic patch so you'd know how very discouraged I am! You'd understand. I can get rid of current weeds in the patch, but how in the Heck (not the word I reeaallly want to use here, but I'm keeping this comment family friendly LOL) do you keep weed seeds from germinating?????

Hi Nicole thank you so much for taking the time to help me be better in growing flowers. 😊 Here are my questions.
    1. soil mix for flower seeds starts? - why is it better then lets say off the shelf?
    2. how do you fertilize your flowers once you plant?
    3. how do you keep flowers looking strong and healthy once you cut? I live in Texas and we have super hot summers. lol
    4. have you been confronted by someone that wanted to know how you came with the price?
    5. how do you build a relationship with a florist?
    6. what are the top 10 things that one would needs to know?
    7. can you recommend books, classes, and other youtube people to learn from?
    8. would you consider doing a teaching class every 4 months or so?

The link I sent you is about a guy who lives in an area where 45 below is normal in the winter. I priced the materials and equipment rental to do it an I can make one for less than $2400. It will give me year round ability and will help me expand my fish growing season without having to shut down for winter. The fish poop from my tanks I use to fertilize my garden. For me fish are primary and flowers and veggies are secondary. My summer electric bill is about $125 a month, in mid winter it is $500 a month, I figure it will pay for itself in less than two years. Love your vids.

I just found your channel recently and you were talking about lights down in your basement I assume where you said it was kind of dark to try to do anything. I just want to let you know what I discovered with my house plants and orchids an extra light is LED light bulbs are absolutely wonderful! I bought a couple floor lamps at thrift stores took the shades off put a hundred watt equivalent daylight not soft light by daylight LEDs into them and wow I can't believe how much light I have from those two floor lamps in addition in my bedroom where I have a lot of blooming plants... I have a back problem so I spend some time in bed so I bring my orchids in here that are in bloom so I can enjoy them when I wake up and go to sleep and take a rest... I also have a couple table lamps four of them that don't have shades two of them have hundred watt equivalent daylight LEDs and two smaller lamps have 60 what equivalent LEDs in them. I also have a West window so on sunny days in the winter the sun sits lower in the sky and sometimes sunlight goes clear across my bedroom to the far wall. I also bought LED under the counter lights that are 40 watt equivalent and I have 5 them in my bedroom... Dollar General sold them but they don't have anymore at my store they were discontinued so I bought the last seven they had in addition 2 about 5 I already have. I need to get some more extension cords for multiple socket plugs so I can plug the rest of them in to use as grow lights. When I get up in the morning I turn all these lights on in my bedroom and if I fall back to sleep if it's 6 a.m. I wear a sleep mask because it's way too bright to try to fall asleep. And the living room I have for Led 100 watt daylight equivalent light bulbs but since it's the living room the shades are still on the lamps. The ceiling fan in the dining area has three hundred watt equivalent LED lights and it which add extra light to the house plants in the living and dining area

I love that you will be doing a Q&A. I am planning for my cut flower garden next year (on a much smaller scale 😂.) and I love the bouquets that you pull together!
Where do you buy your glad bulbs in bulk?
I can find most of the other varieties from floret and Johnny select seeds. Struggling to find a decent price on bulk glads and if I do, you need a wholesaler number. 😞
    AND
How do you plan your early bouquets? It’s easy to find things that will bloom in the summer, but spring blooming things are less available.
    Thank you! 🥰🥰

HOOP House!! Nicole, I totally get the idea of investing in Peonies, but in your zone investing in the hoop house seems like the importance of having a good tractor. It is a really important thing to have on your farm to make your farming life easier and to extend your growing season. You can add to your Peonies each year, but do that gradually. Having that hoop house will be a game changer.

I really like your personality. You shine brighter than a Sunflower! I would so be your BFF IRL. I vote- both. Because either way I feel like it's going to work out. If you get a Hoop House- more money. If you get more Peonies- more money. So soon enough you will have both either way. Peace.

Hi Nicole! Great videos! My question is what are your lessons learn about grow Lisianthus or "Lissies" ? You've touched on it in some of your videos but would loved to hear it again and has Gina shared anything with you regarding it? Secret please !! Hers are beautiful!Yours are lovely too!!Love to try growing them next year. Also, as an experiment, have you thought of digging up a few and overwintering them? Heard some folks have had success with that since they are a perennial in Texas. 🤷‍♀️Like you need another thing to do,lol. Thank you!!~ Joy

Can’t wait for the live! 💕 I think it’s the Peonies for the long term, but boy a high tunnel before winter would be a game changer for your next season, what a tough decision! Can you get a free or discounted hightunnle through a scheme of some sort? I feel like you have mentioned that in the past? Guess it might be a wait though? There is nothing like that to my knowledge here in Australia. 💕

Go for the peonies. I think you’ll be so glad you did in a few years since that is your dream. The hoop house is something you can get anytime. Just my two cents, but I’m also in zone 9b!
I’m also wondering if you would recommend Lisa Ziegler’s online grower school. I’m seriously considering it, her methods make a lot of sense to me. Thanks always for your videos, they truly make my day and your enthusiasm is infectious! ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Nicole! Your videos came up in my suggestions not to long ago. They are awesome! I watch them all.🙂 I vote for hoop house because you can use it right away to increase your production. Questions I have are how to you ensure there are no bugs/bees in your flowers? Also, do flower farmers carry personal liability insurance? I have researched this but can't find anything on the subject!!

I would highly recommend going with a high tunnel. I'm in your same growing zone and last year I grew anemones in the winter. This year I'm adding ranunculus. My question is how to you keep the basil from wilting in arrangements?

You already know what you need in your heart and gut. If the peonies require time then do that. A hoop house can be purchased the next time you have some extra $$.

Love your videos Nicole! As far as Peonies, I love them so from my childhood. I am in 9b so obviously not for me. My answer would be simply, you have planted 230 or so. At maturity each one will produce around 40 to 50 blooms. Can you sell that many? That is like 5 - 6 thousand blooms, divided by half for not being good to sell. I think I would go for the hoop house. You can divide the peonies once they get mature and those will produce sooner. Love you. Diane

Thank you for these amazing videos! I vote hoop house, you will be able to move things from the basement to out there so that you can start even more from seed as you grow your farm. My question for you is, how did you choose your flower school program? I am debating Floret and doing Lisa from The Gardener's Workshop Course. The Floret course is more expensive, but does that mean that it is that much better? Help!

    Hi, Nicole!
Coming in late on this vid with a snap question.
Wanted to try some and chose the silver in the Costa series….not realizing how there are 4 groups of snaps. Anyway, they’re sprouted! I’m in southern Ohio and will likely sneak a harvest out of them. But, did you have success planting them to overwinter in your zone? Love all the experiences and learning around growing flowers. ♥️

Hoop house is what I would do since you can get more spaces for plant starts and extend your seasons.....you can also take it off your taxes.....you could also make Christmas arrangements to sell from the hoop house.....giving you more money for plants....

I love your videos, I’m in Yorkshire,England and have a small cut flower allotment that I share with my daughter. It’s a fraction of the size of your venture, but we have been able to invest in a hoop house. So quite selfishly, I kinda hope you will invest in a hoop house too, so I can learn alongside you. But commercially the peony’s make more sense.
My question for live video- How are the David Austin roses doing?

hoop house for sure!!! it has been my saving grace my field has been painfully slow this year and the hoop house is loaded with flowers and with way fewer bugs. I don't think I would have made any money without it this year. I could go on and on about it but really I can't even think of any negatives. And Don't feel pressured to answer our questions you are one person with many hats and we understand!!! I don't even know where you find the time to video!! if I had to choose a quad ride with my fam or answer questions I would pick my fam. I agree with Abby would love to hear about flower school and if it is worth it and did you learn about weddings or events that would require more structure? I am considering an arranging course..... thanks

Logically I would have said buy the hoop house to get faster return on investment as this is a business and you need to increase profits to be viable. However, you have previosuly said you are not in this for just the money. Therefore, since you do have other source of income, it make more sense to "buy" time and get the peonies in the ground, hoop house can come next year. That way within a space of 1 year from now you'll have both purchases and your new peonies will be well settled in ground.

  • @ready2run2006
    @ready2run2006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I also vote for the peonies. I have a feeling you will be able to scrounge up the funds for the hoop house somehow but you may not be able to get those years back required to grow the peonies.
My question is how and how often are you watering your flowers? Do you have an irrigation system? Also, do you fertilize?

🌿💗 I’ve just discovered you today and I’m in love with your venture. I was seeking planting help with a joe pye weed, which led to looking for guidance on planting lisianthus from seed, and after a couple of your videos...you’ve made me even more excited about my seed order from a couple days ago which includes, celosia, and more.
I hope you’ve chosen to invest in the hoop house. I feel that is the way to go and will move you even further along. We tie ourselves to numbers (the 500 peonies), at least I do...but what if you reset your goal to 250? Bam! Mission accomplished! And invest a little in amending the soil and nurturing those you have. You are a winner no matter what.

Hello! I had a question about your lilies. Since lilies are a perennial bulb, obviously you want them to come back every year. When growing lilies for cut flowers, how can you get them to come back when you cut the majority of the stem off?

Hi Nicole!! My 9 year old daughter, Charlotte, wants to ask a question. She wants to know: “Where did you start selling your flowers?” She is helping me start this flower journey next year and is looking forward to starting a business. My question; “Any other advice on CSAs would be great. How did you first market your CSA and how did you reach others?” Thanks for taking us along on your flower farm. We love watching!! -Charlotte and Jessica

I wanted to know if when selling flowers do people prefer pollen less flowers. Looking more towards sunflowers. I see some with pollen and some without and if people prefer to have pollen less. To me I love them all and I just put a plastic mat under the vase. What is your experience.
