      As someone who went to Navy, the problem with the TO is that you have to consistently get 3-4 yards on every single play. If the QB makes the wrong read or someone misses a block that allows someone to get through and get a TFL the drive is almost completely shot. And if you are only advancing at 5 yards a carry, you have to run that over and over again. If you can get a QB that can run the option, but is also able to throw the ball decently, it can become extremely frustrating for defenses to face. The problem is trying to find that kind of QB that's willing to go to a service academy.

    The option used to be used to balance the playing field. Unathletic people could operate in the triple option. Maybe if we put the most athletic people in the offense it could dominate again.

    The triple-option is still an offense for teams that don't have the talent to run an air raid or a run-and-shoot offense. The fun thing is that you can run it out of the I-formation, pro set, spread, or wishbone. It's all a matter of preparation and trickery. Throw in some passing, and you can make DCs meltdown and make mistakes. We lined up in the wish bone, split out a tight end, put the fullback in motion, and caught the defense in a run defense unprepared for a deep ball. All it takes is imagination.

    • @newage-sports

      Jimmy Johnson playing SS as LB’s and LB’s as DE’s against the later stages of the wishbone was the start of the general downfall - defenses got more athletic. I also think people persevere over the fact this offense was run from under center, specifically. Between spread read plays, RPO’s, etc in the modern game, the core concepts of the option still exist and are very prevalent.
      I replied elsewhere, the option was meant to get athletes the ball in space, as defenses evolved, ‘how’ to get the ball in space evolved. But the concept remains.

      A year on, Army has transitioned back to a more traditional flex base. They still leverage some flexbone-pistol looks, but way more more like they were prior to the 2023 "modern warfare" experiment. Additionally, it's seeing a ground-swell at lower levels. Cal Poly and the Citadel in FCS, Harding absolutely dominating with it in DII, and a number of DIII and NAIA schools have adopted it. Even non-flex teams have used elements of Johnson's concepts. Kansas under former OC (now at Penn State) Andy Kotelnicki ran a ton of really interesting 3opt looks using both split RBs and by bringing WRs in as WBs on orbits. Really cool and fun stuff.

There's nothing tricky about attacking where the defense literally isn't ... unless you want to quote the Master-General himself: "All warfare is based on deception." If so, make sure to also quote "Attack weakness, avoid strength."
    Sun-tzu will always win, and the Triple Option will always succeed over time, because you force the opponent to make a decision. Once he does, attack the other way.

    • @ChrisM_1129
      @ChrisM_1129 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. The game evolves. The troller option/wishbone spread across football in the 60’s(?) and 70’s because it allowed squads like Oklahoma to get their superior athletes the ball in space. The game was played on the periphery of the field for the most part. Further, a great deal of blocking in a lot of schemes is cut blocking which is far easier than squaring a defender up. The flexbone became popular because it allowed for more misdirection via motions, fakes, and counters. This offense was never meant to be smashmouth - it was meant to effectively distribute the ball to playmakers to run in space. Lastly, option football is still very prevalent in college just not on every play from under center.
      Out of all the college football I’ve watched (and played, by the by), the triple option is easily the scheme most aesthetically appealing to me. But pretending players today have less mettle because every team doesn’t employ a series of fakes, counters, pitches, and edge runs from under center (because all of these things still happen just not like Oklahoma was doing in the 70’s) is pre-lapsarian nonsense.

    My memory of the option was that for the option to be successful, you had to throw it 12-15 times per game. This kept the defense from lining up with 8-9 in the box and single covering any wide receivers. Johnson seemed to throw it less and less. You want to take advantage of the single covering of the wide receivers and throw it deep a few times against that single coverage. That’s the one thing I wish Johnson had done, thrown it a few more times. I always thought Johnson was a great coach. I hate that he got pushed out. I would have kept him around. Geoff Collins was a complete disaster.

    I ❤ watching triple-option football...it's a different, entertaining type of offense. You mention Georgia Tech, and folks have mentioned Nebraska in the 90s but there was a third Power 5 school that was known for the triple-option in the 90s...Syracuse. They had some pretty good teams, winning the Big East a couple of times with it. Donovan McNabb came out of that system and had a solid NFL career. The Orange blew up some pretty good teams with the triple-option, Miami being one of them. Once Syracuse moved away from the triple-option, they have generally not been as good since.

    Up until last year Kennesaw State was the only other D 1 school in Georgia that still ran the triple option. During their first 8 seasons as a program KSU had a winning record at the FCS level. Up until last year, where they ditched the option and immediately started losing. Yeah, it’s a transition into a new system, but it’s disappointing to see a system that was such a mainstay in the state disappear. It seemed as though they were going to move up to C-USA with option, but not anymore. That just leaves GT.

    OUTSTANDING video!!! Very well done.....Football is about blocking and tackling, nothing more, nothing less. Teams who are successful run the ball well and are able to stop the run. The media, the analysts, the armchair coaches and critics have used their position to take potshots at the offense and those who choose to run it. It's OK for the service academies, but it will not work anywhere else. So, these so called "experts" shoot their mouths off at random because it's not exciting anymore, it's not creative enough, it doesn't spread the ball around enough. So, now the Air Force Academy is basically the only school at the D1 #FBS level running an option based offense. Kennesaw State is changing the offense and they will struggle to compete trying to be just like everybody else. Army is evolving and Navy, well, poor Navy does not know who they are anymore.
    NEVERTHELESS, the option can be run and is still run will success at many levels of football. Harding University in Arkansas, Salisbury State, Springfield College in Massachusetts are all VERY successful programs who will LOTS of games every year running the option. You either do things BETTER than everyone else or you do things DIFFERENTLY. If you have the best players you can do whatever the heck you want, if you do not, well you better be creative running the ball and stopping the run.
    Once again, GREAT VIDEO, very enjoyable. Two thumbs up!!!!

    Overall, I'm high on the PJ era at tech, but as time went on it was clear IMO that the more elite teams could still overpower tech (eg LSU, Iowa, maybe one or two others). I recall that in his first year or two, PJ had some of Gailey's recruits, and PJ did more with this high level talent (Nesbit, Dwyer) than Gailey could ever do. Then it seemed like PJ couldn't get quite that same level of talent, but the offense was mostly good and tech would 'over achieve', and then get into a bowl and sometimes get clobbered by a physically superior team (although I do recall Tech beating Miss State one year, that was a great bowl win). The biggest problems with the TO are IMO that the quarterback really takes a beating (high likelihood of injury), and that to do it well really requires elite level talent (but the elite talent mostly want to play in a traditional 'pro style' offense). But when the TO is clicking, it is really fun to watch.

I played at Navy during the 2016 season and watched a lot of their film in the off-season and to bypass that offensive line, especially in their up years, is a travesty.

    VT would have more acc championships if it wasn't for GTs triple option. This is the only offense Bud Foster couldn't figure out. He had to go to Iowa in the off-season to see how Iowa destroyed GT in their bowl game the previous season.

    • @monkeyb1820
      @monkeyb1820 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The biggest problem with the triple option at the ACC level is that teams with physically superior athletes on the D-line in particular could often snuff it out. LSU and Iowa really pounded Tech. It's basically like the TO let tech over-achieve, reach their top potential--but then they'd go to a bowl game against a team that had the type of speed and athletes to not get beaten on those various sweeps and TO handoffs...It would never happen, but if a Bama or UGA ran the TO, they would slaughter everyone. But these schools would never do it, knowing that the other sec schools would say, 'that guy's running some gimmick offense, come join our pro-style offense...'.

    I think yall got a good one in Coach Key.

    • @nerdstop5025
      @nerdstop5025 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The recruiting thing was a struggle. However, an underrated part of what made tech a difficult place to recruit at, and what I will give Collins a bit of credit for, is the fact that boosters saw Paul was able to win with less, and funding stopped coming through.
      Now, Geoff had a top 25 class ready to go in 2021, until he went 3-9 for the 3rd straight year, causing all those guys to decommit and talent like Gibbs to transfer out.
      Key is a breath of fresh air, a bit of an awkward goofball to the media who breathes football. The thing I feel is right with key is how he's been able to hire his staff, and bring positions we haven't had in almost 20 years. I really do think the gap might be starting to shrink again, and I'm excited for tech football again.

    The best summary of what the Flexbone/Wishbone Triple Options is comes from my best friend. He was an All-State QB who ran it. He turned the program around with it, from nearly being canceled to a powerhouse. Later, as a coach, he would use it to win our high school it's first state championship in fifty years. He called it football's knuckleball.
    "You will win you games with it that you shouldn't even be competitive in. And it will lose you games you circle as an automatic win on the calendar in June. Just like throwing a good nuke will give you a chance to strike Barry Bonds out, you will also give up home runs to backup shortstops hitting below the Mendosa Line."
    Johnson deserves a lot of credit for running it.
