Possibly your best show Wreck Talk. Excellent work. Good to see you not portraying CPJ as a deity. CPJ was as smooth as sandpaper and a bitter dude WHILE he was coaching at GT. This is not revisionist history, CPJ had worn out his welcome at Tech, and the very few thousands in the stands every Saturday were just as tired of CPJ as CPJ was of Tech. Definitely a mutual parting of the ways. CPJ offered his resignation and Stansbury accepted it immediately. That said, CPJ is one of the top 5 coaches ever at GT. CPJ left to program destitute for the clown that followed him. The program athletes could not transition successfully to CGC's offense, especially on the OL and QB. CGC proved that he could not develop players, teach techniques or plan a game. It was a disastrous 3 years and how he treated CPJ makes CGC look even worse (if possible). It was good to see CPJ back in the building last season and name put up on the ring for the CFBHOF.
I did not think I could like the Clown any less, but when I heard that they locked CPJ out of the build...that ticked me off. I don't know if that was the Clown's direct doing or who, but you don't treat a man who did what he did for us the way he was treated. As for the transfers, while I don't disagree that we need to reasonable, I have never had a problem with us maintaining our academic rigor and integrity. I am fine with some exceptions like we appeartly had under O'Leary, but I would want to know more about the transfer rules. As you point out, transferring into Tech is not easy - nor should it be. (And you are right...Patrick Skov and he was the B-back that replaced the guys who were on the 2014 Orange Bowl team...and no, he never really did that much). Yes, Stanford is a fantastic school, but what did he major in there? Was his major such that he had the necessary courses that he would need to jump into Tech coursework. I completely get Paul's frustrations, but at the same time, we would need to know more than just his GPA. I do agree that he is discounting the change out of the Triple Option. You could walk into UGAg and score 75-80 points every game with their talent, but it takes time to rebuild the roster to run a more common contemporary offense.
Remember in the Orange Bowl against Miss St., that was Goff Collins defense that we torched. Goff had already left for Florida to join their staff at bowl time. As for CPJ I wish he was still there. But I am 100\% behind coach Key. He will be just as successful as CPJ.
I remember Brent's comment from his intro presser WTTE "It's been a long time since I've recruited against Georgia Tech". That's the only negative I remember. Dunno when he said 'small ball'
Um... CPJ keeping Gailey's players and getting them to buy in should not be disrespected or underappreciated. As you said, players would transfer out when you bring in a SPREAD OPTION offense. Remember, the main difference is under center versus shotgun, which ties into his frustration in trying to explain what it is. I remember listening to Roddy Jones correcting commentators and it was gold! That being said, if CPJ doesn't get those players to stay... what happens? He has a right to side-eye Brent Key... I'm not going to fault him for that.
PJ s loyalty to Sewak- who shafted some great O Linemen in his last 3 years. As starters they went cpj w ideas sewak wouldn't try. Cpj benched them . Cpj was great on field coach and could see every thing that happened.
GT football showed great error when they pushed out Paul Johnson. However, his lack of defensive play in many games could not be overcome by his offense. Just lost too many close games he should have won as I saw it.
O’Leary had a much better tenure than CPJ at Tech. It’s just that FSU was basically what UGA is now and there were not divisions so you had to beat FSU to win the ACC
The triple option was the wrinkle we needed to make up for a less than elite recruiting. Going back to more traditional offenses I think we can all agree that our recruits just won't make it, take a look at us since the last championship 30+/- years ago. Wish PJ could've been more hands on with defense and kicking and I think we change a few more of those closer games to our W column...
First let me say that Collins was one of the biggest coaching debacles we’d ever seen. Todd Stansbury should never be hired for another professional job for how long he let that clown show go on. CPJ was a fine coach. The TO was a cool and fascinating offense to watch…. But when it was bad, it was REAL bad. I get he was a good coach. But I don’t understand the praise he gets sometimes. The way people talk about him makes it sound like he brought Tech multiple National championships. If we aren’t winning Nattys, then our next goal should be beating UGA right?? The guy only beat UGA 3 times. And those UGA teams in the past were nowhere near what they are today. Those teams were beatable, and Mark Richt OWNED CPJ. We might’ve beaten Kirby once, but that was year 1 and we barely scraped by. I hate celebrating being mediocre. I will never understand the praise he got. All I can say, “yeah CPJ was a fine coach. Can’t recruit, but he makes it work” that’s about all there is to say. It was way past due to move on from the TO. And now it seems like tech is still recovering. I love Tech, and I hate UGA. I want Tech to beat UgA so bad. I believe Key has us moving in the right direction
You leave out the fact that we're a D1 school that has a hard time recruiting against all the other D1 schools in the Southeast, and specifically in the Southeastern Conference. We're never going to be competitive with those schools on a consistent basis. We're too small and too specialized in our curriculum to be able to compete consistently with those other programs.
Yeah this is pretty much my take. Sure CPJ had an orange bowl, but he had the same win percentage as Chan, who we fired, while also not being able to recruit as well. I’m not sure that trade off was worth an orange bowl.
I would push back on his offense being some kind of glaring issue against Clemson after 2014. Those last 4 years Paul was there, Clemson went 55-4 with 2 of those 4 losses to Alabama teams who won the national championship (they also beat Alabama twice and dog-walked them by 28 points) and 1 to Syracuse on a sleepy Friday night in Syracuse with the starting QB out injured. Had Paul decided to come back in 2019, it’s a team that likely competes for the Coastal and would have rolled easily over the Citadel and Geoff Collins-led Temple. Would get blown out by Clemson and UGA, sure, but certainly would not have lost 45-0 to Virginia Tech and Justin Fuente, who was the coach referenced as calling it a total circus after having lost 3 straight to Paul 2016-2018.
Talked to a guy that played for him on the O Line. He says it definitley about the size o the line man. You can find his comment, he goes by Mojo Productions
I didn't have a problem with what he said about Brent - think you over analyzed his comments. I never though he was disrespectful because if it was said it was true and he was asked a question about Brent. I find his honesty refreshing
I think compared to Collins he seems like a straight shooter. My question is why bring up well he was on that staff while that was going on? Other than to imply he should have publicly criticized Collins.
@davidray1308 Agree with your take. Also agree with @wrecktalk that while CPJ could've left out that comment, it's probably from years of frustration of keeping quite about the clown that he just had to get that one out as a release. Also regarding "small ball", CPJ probably took it as something akin to Key referring to CPJ's football as little league football, not that his guys were physically smaller, so if that was the inference, then it's a bit offensive to CPJ.
Stingtalk and theswarm ....basically told me if I couldnt hold that opinion if I didnt have stats to back it up...that was during the covid year@@wrecktalk
Good she in general. I'm 0one of the trip fans. It's a myth that it can't be run because of rule changes; see Air Force.this last season. But some of the run oriented shot gun formations - like Army or Coastal Carolina or (dare I say it) Tech in the late season - would probably be Paul's choice, just like Monken. Oh, and about recruiting. True, Tech probably wouldn't have got King to transfer. But I bet Paul would have sold the farm to get Castlleanos and I bet he would have succeeded. It isn't that we didn't get good players; check the record. it's that the recruiting rankings are gaged to a different style of football.
Also did not really hear any dig at Coach Key. You are making way to much out of nothing. Key could not speak up as an assistant but CPJ also made a true statement. Both were correct.
The spread was necessary for GT. Due to the strict admission you wont get the talent you want. The culture of the school matters in recruiting. GT is a tech school who refuses to make sports important. The flexbone allowed them to at least compete. You see it now with how bad they are. Realistically youre not drafting the linemen needed to run a pro or air raid system.
Jeff Collins could have did a better job regardless of what you're trying to say he was too cocky and not humble that was his downfall Jeff had plenty of time to bring in recruiting classes to do better he was just simply did not get the job done so he was fired😅

Four things that limited Ga Tech success with the triple option over time. 1. Other teams and coaches figured it out. The players and coaches had seen it. And often the other teams would take a bi-week or schedule a weaker team who also ran the triple option. . 2. Our offensive line was too small compared to elite teams. Over time, it got to a point that the better football teams like Clemson and UGA didn't even need to take a bi-week for us because their lines just began to plough us over. The mis-directions didn't work when defensive linemen drawfed our offensive line. 3. Our quarterbacks seemed to regress with time. Typically, QBs would get better year after year as they got older and had more experience. Unfortunately, ours got worse. I suspect this was due to the number of hits they would take. 4. Recruiting. Ultimately, we were seeing less and less success with Paul Johnson and it was time to move on.
I’ve been a Georgia tech fan since I was 7. When we hired Chan Gailey I thought it would be a disaster but up until 2019 Chan Gailey had more active players from his tenure at Georgia Tech (from 2002-2008) than Paul Johnson did. Think about that for a minute. The best year CPJ had the year he has a cupboard full of talent left behind by Gailey. There’s a reason why no power 5 school even runs this offense. CPJ ran Tech into the ground. Collins was a strange dude but he inherited a mess. I always say this but had Gailey played ANYBODY at QB instead of Reggie Ball (who’s best season was his freshman year beating auburn) including jusr running Calvin Johnson out of the wildcat then Gailey would’ve been the head coach at Tech for as long as he wanted. He had figured out a way to crack the code and recruit at Tech much like Paul Hewitt. A lot of the incoming recruits are from Georgia and I like that. Even the good class or two collins had it was all over the lower 48
Actually, the triple option is great and the reason everyone doesn’t run it is it’s not exciting, from most fans perspectives. You take advantage of your personnel on the field. For example, you may run a full back dive for one or 2 yards on first and second down and then do a half back sweep to a speedy Roddy Jones on the outside for 15 yards, or he may go paydirt! From a football purist standpoint, like myself, I find it ultra exciting!
@@johnburns6761 remind me of the last coach who had multiple double digit win seasons and 2 Orange bowls berth , we had more success under CPJ than any other coach since Dodd
@davidcauthen37 Paul Johnson claimed he could win national championships with his offense and 3 star players. The truth of the matter every year recruiting got worse. The option caused Tech to be put a black list by top talent

The leaving coach is not responsible for the next coaching staff that comes in. CPJ got the chess pieces he needed to run HIS system. CPJ shouldn't be blamed about the difficulty in transitioning.
@TheKiman2 Paul retired on his own terms. Recruiting was flat because good players didn't want anything to do with it. The option eas the worst 11 year experiment ever in division 1 football.

CGC proved that he could not develop players, teach techniques or plan a game. It was a disastrous 3 years and how he treated CPJ makes CGC look even worse (if possible). It was good to see CPJ back in the building last season and name put up on the ring for the CFBHOF.
This goes outside of FB. But anytime I'm told someone is above critisism, I call BS.
And the congregation says, AMEN BROTHER!@@wrecktalk
Tracy Ham also threw for 306 yards in the 86 championship game
Remember in the Orange Bowl against Miss St., that was Goff Collins defense that we torched. Goff had already left for Florida to join their staff at bowl time. As for CPJ I wish he was still there. But I am 100\% behind coach Key. He will be just as successful as CPJ.
The fullback name from Stanford with the 3.2 was:Skov.
I remember Brent's comment from his intro presser WTTE "It's been a long time since I've recruited against Georgia Tech". That's the only negative I remember. Dunno when he said 'small ball'
Tech is pretty irrelevant without Paul Johnson, but I understand the transition to integrate into the new era.
Josh Pate is the KING of bad takes lmao
Wreck. Good video. I think he likes key. But mad he was buddies with Geoff. Fair.
I’m glad Paul Johnson got his Georgia Tech hall of fame award after the firing of Geoff Collins.
You should do a dynasty as Georgia State where Paul Johnson becomes their coach to take over Atlanta lol
O’Leary had a much better tenure than CPJ at Tech. It’s just that FSU was basically what UGA is now and there were not divisions so you had to beat FSU to win the ACC
Yep, FSU was the thorn in the Tech's side in the late 90s.
Canceling his key fob at any point is blasphemy
The triple option was the wrinkle we needed to make up for a less than elite recruiting. Going back to more traditional offenses I think we can all agree that our recruits just won't make it, take a look at us since the last championship 30+/- years ago. Wish PJ could've been more hands on with defense and kicking and I think we change a few more of those closer games to our W column...
Say what you will CPJ beat the Dawgs and Kirby that trumps all
First let me say that Collins was one of the biggest coaching debacles we’d ever seen.
Watch the live show from last night. I address that head on(why is CPJ above criticism)
Would get blown out by Clemson and UGA, sure, but certainly would not have lost 45-0 to Virginia Tech and Justin Fuente, who was the coach referenced as calling it a total circus after having lost 3 straight to Paul 2016-2018.
small ball is not about the size of the player but more about getting 3-4 yrds a play. its a baseball term
I'm still waiting on the message board mods to reinstate me after being critical of TFG and Patterdude.
you got kicked for that?
Stingtalk and theswarm ....basically told me if I couldnt hold that opinion if I didnt have stats to back it up...that was during the covid year@@wrecktalk
@danfarbecker2441 check out the show tonight I got into a spat with some guy on those forums today. We need to address some of this craziness
And I thought we had problems at FSU
Top 20 (not top 10 as stated) class by Gailey. They were ranked 18th nationally.
Also did not really hear any dig at Coach Key. You are making way to much out of nothing. Key could not speak up as an assistant but CPJ also made a true statement. Both were correct.
You’re right 15th on 247 we talked about it in the live show last night. But they’re not the only service and I swear one of them ranked it 10th.
He talking about dabo. Dabo loved Paul
Jeff Collins could have did a better job regardless of what you're trying to say he was too cocky and not humble that was his downfall Jeff had plenty of time to bring in recruiting classes to do better he was just simply did not get the job done so he was fired😅
If you think I was defending Geoff Collins I feel like you didn’t watch this video or any video I’ve ever done on him.
@@wrecktalk great content I just don't like nothing about Jeff Collins in the triple option was very successful at Georgia Tech being a Florida State fan that really scared us a lot
Not knowing anything about the GT situation… If CPJ had things going on so well there… why was he let go? (No shade, just an honest question…)
That’s a loaded question. He wasn’t let go, he retired… officially. There is still debate on that point. I personally think it was a mutual parting of ways.
The Fb was skov from Stanford. He wasn’t good. We played ND on the road and got trashed. That season was horrible.
Strange you don’t catch yourself when you say the wrong name
Collins was a clown but top tier player would have nothing to do with the option
@KS__99 to win national championship it's proven you need 50 plus percent 4 and 5 stars a couple of players sprinkled in won't cut it .
Look at the big picture not one beautiful blue corner
@@KS__99 Mediocrity is a disease. I liked coach keys statement in his pressure.
When the accepted the job that we were gonna dominate Athens. Georgia, send some money so we can buy some players.
@KS__99 when it comes to supporting a team it takes a village a hand full can't do it.
If a successful alumni donates 100k a year could you not see fit to donate 1% which would be $1000
Stop interrupting....let us listen to interview!
this video would have been a lot better if it weren't stoped every 10 sec
Thats why I linked the full interview in the description. This video is my take on that interview.
If the option is so great everyone would be running it.
@@KS__99 not everyone dummy
@KS__99 no one is running Paul Johnson's system
Wake up
Actually, the triple option is great and the reason everyone doesn’t run it is it’s not exciting, from most fans perspectives.
The ill-informed injections from the host made this unwatchable.
What was Ill informed?
Chan Gailey left tech in way better shape than Paul Johnson did
So what I would take Paul Johnson days again chan was and average coach coach CPJ took us to 2 Orange bowls and we were competitive with UGA
Without a doubt.
After watching this, it just makes me dislike PJ even more.
If anything, I thought he would at least always be truthful, but clearly, he's not completely ho eat either.
Wreck your assessment of all this is spot on.
The leaving coach is not responsible for the next coaching staff that comes in. CPJ got the chess pieces he needed to run HIS system. CPJ shouldn't be blamed about the difficulty in transitioning.
@@TheKiman2 Nick Saben left Alabama in better shape than he found it
@TheKiman2 Paul retired on his own terms. Recruiting was flat because good players didn't want anything to do with it. The option eas the worst 11 year experiment ever in division 1 football.
