Funny horseradish story.....we had an old Polish neighbor (always a good story). He was teaching my husband how to harvest horseradish. #1. "You harvest it in a month that has an R in it," so they harvested this batch in "Argust." (This is now the standard pronunciation in our house) #2. Buy a backhoe......those roots! (There are more stories about that backhoe....) #3. Put it in a blender with vinegar and salt (I can't tell you the proportions because old Poles just eyeball things. FYI...I'm also Polish) #4 Cut up some chedder cheese (no crackers just cheese) #5. Call the wives. #6. Pour the cherry brandy (they had a personal shot glass just for me) #7. Lie....and say because you harvested it too early, there's not much flavor. #8. Laugh your butt off as you watch your wife hit the floor because her sinuses are on FIRE 🔥 (I really should have known better with these two!)
😂😂😂 I am cracking up here. My father in law was a 1st generation Polish-American! He had so many great stories like this and I miss him tremendously! He would have loved this one! Many Blessings and thank you so much for the laugh!!!
I grow my own horseradish and make Fire Cider every fall. When I found out that even the Romans used this to stay well, I was all in. We take a shot glass a day and we are never sick. Knock on wood. Great video. Thanks
Because of your video regarding taking yourself off of thyroid medication I have slowly started that process myself. I have found a nurse practitioner who is eager to help me in this journey. so far I have been able to lower my dose twice and I’m almost at a place where I can go off of it completely! I would have never thought about going off my thyroid medication had I not seen your video. I thought this was some thing I was gonna have to be on for the rest of my life. It’s starting to make me wonder if I really needed it to begin with or if I could’ve gotten off of it sooner. I wish doctors would look at this and consider taking people off of medication‘s. Thank you for putting out these videos you are helping people more than you know
Doctors are only trained to medicate, medical schools are funded by drug companies. The best doctor figures out natural therapy, they're rare and probably afraid to talk so as not to lose their license.
Hi, Heidi, thank you for this video. Horseradish is an amazing plant, we use it a lot traditionally in my country - Czech Republic. We have many recipes for culinary use, we eat it raw - grated (alone, or with an apple grated with it. It tastes great and makes it milder) mainly with some pork, we also use it as remedy for colds. I also grow my own horseradish in the garden. A good way to preserve it is to grate it, pack it in a jar, cover with some vinegar, put a lid on it and keep it in the fridge, or a colder cellar and use it as you need. It keeps for months, maybe years. Try that one, it works great.;) I also put some horseradish when fermenting beetroot, they work really greatly together... also fermenting cabbage with some grated horseradish is very good.
Thanks for sharing. Every time I saw horse reddish plants in my garden, the signatures on dark green leaves attracted me and seemed to invite me. So today I cooked soup from the leaves and potatoes. Oh man you wouldn't believe me , after I consumed the soup, didn't I feel so good that I felt before. I have been trying different things to help my gut issues. 75% of my problems went with consuming one bowl of horse reddish leaves soup. As an old man at the age of 79, I am blessed with numbers of health issues . I leave it to your imagination. I am feeling very good and intend to carry on using different recipes for different health issues as I am a self - taught and self -motivated herbalist. The Lord has blessed me with skills and judgements in the use of herbs.Amen ❤
When I learned from Homesteading Family’s channel that horseradish is one of the best herbs for urinary tract infections, I started buying a prepared horseradish that has no high fructose corn syrup or other additives. I think it is just preserved in vinegar. When I feel a UTI coming on, I mix a heaping tablespoon horseradish with about half cup of sour cream and eat it as a dip with pretzels. Usually within a day it is gone!
I'm a nurse.... that is pretty silly.... water is also toxic in high quantities. i drive my own dr crazy cuz i go to see him when he's needed but he thinks trying to use food, herbs and spices to make yourself healthy is nonsense..... until i got really sick (ear/sinus infection, strep throat and bronchitis) after falling into a creek right after the 7ft of snow we got here in Buffalo last month. normally it would've put me in the hospital cuz i have asthma... in fall i started drinking tea every morning with fresh ginger, fresh garlic, fresh ginger, fresh horseradish, cayenne pepper and raw honey... i beef drinking this every morning without fail. when i got sick i was over it in one week instead of my usual 3 months or more. THAT got his attention cuz he's been my dr for 20 yrs and I've never gotten better that fast... i LOVE horseradish raw cooked doesn't matter. as i wrote this im eating home-made from scratch horseradish mac n cheese.... it's awesome. i only use horseradish mustard. and i go through jars of horseradish mustard.... have loved it since i was a kid. helps clean your sinuses out pretty good too....
I dug my horseradish yesterday. Mid-Missouri. I wash the dirt off, remove any bad spots, cut into chunks and put into my food processor. I blend it with vinegar; enough to make it hold together and put into pint and 1/2 pint jars. It keeps very well in the refrigerator for well over a year. Yes, it is very strong. I do all the processing in my big metal pole barn, with the big doors wide open and I still have to take a break now and then to let my eyes clear.
I’m growing tons of horseradish, however, we harvested ours last year and blended it and added vinegar but it wasn’t spicy at all! Is there a better time to harvest it?
@@susieq725 Horseradish needs a couple of hard frosts to move the nutrients from the leafs into the roots. The leafs will look badly frosted and wilted. They can then be dug anytime from then until spring. Here in Missouri, I dig during November before the ground freezes.
Thanks Heidi for the link to your Playlist of videos of healthy herbs and such. I'm fixing to binge watch it. Just wanted to thank you for all the great info you provide. My family and I are starting a healthier journey and your channel is my favorite!!!🤗
These smart people who feel the need to correct you tickle me. It reminds me of a passage in Scripture: “proclaiming themselves to be wise, they became fools.” I like that you bravely address these issues and don’t shy away. ♥️
Good morning Heidi. I definitely agree that horesradish is so much better for what ails you than OTC medications or prescription drugs. Thanks for sharing and have a great Tuesday.
Thank you. Been growing horseradish for years. I just move it about as it roots so easy. I find in my climate the plant fizzles out and is small when it's not divided. I like its looks - it just a pretty strappy leaved plant that looks nice in the garden. Probably, i should harvest some and dry it instead of buying horseradish powder, I mean duh. I use it to make sauces for beef. And I use it to one of my potato salads. It's a delicious changed to the traditional.😊
Yes horseradish is fun to watch grow, and spread out, started with one, now have 1/4 of garden full. This year has been the hottest. Love it hot, reminds me of my grandpa when he used to make. I freeze dry the horseradish, came out wonderful. We put and use it on everything, roast beef is the best. I forgot to say, this season we grated up a beetroot in it, lovely pink color.
And one more thing. One of the grandfather's jokes was asking his grandson if he wanted to smell a jar of freshly grated horseradish... When the grandson smelled it, the effect was cleared sinuses and a lot of laughter in the family.
I planted horseradish last year that I got from a friend. I make fire cider with it and now that I have my own growing I’m excited about what I can make with it. Thanks Heidi for all your wonderful videos.
I’m happy to hear the health benefits! I’m not surprised bc of garlic. I have a horseradish crusted roast recipe that’s great. I put a bunch of raw horseradish in the food processor and froze in mini ice cube trays. I just use it straight from the freezer.
Now I am excited for this coming year. I got plants / roots from a guy in a neighboring town by posting an ad online. Side note.... another guy seen my ad requesting horseradish and he called me and asked that if I find some, if he could have some and he would even pick it up and deliver my share to me! What a boon! Free horseradish and free delivery! Okay... I have to add this story. My mom told me that my brother had always been curious. She was cooking horseradish outside because it is so strong. My brother, who was about 5 at the time, kept wanting to see and finally mom let him look in the pot and he fainted! That didn't stop him though, he loved horseradish!
Ah fire cider is something I need to make! I currently have bronchitis (I get it every time I get a cold just because of my asthma) so now I'm excited to put horseradish in there. In my old town, I had local elderberry syrup lady who made amazing fire cider and whether I took that or her regular elderberry syrup, all it took was 3 days taking it 3x a day and whatever I was sick with was gone. Herbs have such amazing healing abilities. Our Heavenly Father truly knew what He was doing when He created the plants on this planet. He planned these plants to work even for us in this day and age. It's truly an amazing grace.
And yet another use of horseradish in Poland: it is added to pickles, especially pickled cucumbers (horseradish leaves or root), bread was also baked on horseradish leaves.
Yes, this is about fermented cucumbers (spring water, rock salt - 1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water - fresh cucumbers, dill with seeds, preferably dried, garlic and horseradish root or leaves, sometimes blackcurrant leaves)
Years ago I used to get sinus infections frequently. I also had a polyp in my nose, which the "commercial" doctor wanted to remove. After a bit of research I said, "No thank you!" Then we discovered horseradish. I would take a spoonful of raw horseradish and blast my sinuses when it got bad. Nothing better can rid you of that totally plugged up feeling! And, I believe that also led to my polyp diminishing.
My grandma was born 1878 and a homesteader NE of Calgary, they came from US. She grew so much, made sauerkraut in a big vat, etc. 10 children over 20 years, several that didn't make it. All that's left of the homestead is the horseradish plants that took it over. She was deaf and mom rarely talked to her so I never got to know her well, I suspect phone calls weren't possible as grandma was deaf, and mom and dad were dairy farmers so visiting was difficult with family. We as kids never got sauerkraut, so I was surprised when mom said she loves it, dad didn't😆
I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos, but for several years before the diagnosis just was told I had hypothyroid. I chose not to do medication but used kelp and dietary changes to heal that. It took only weeks for my symptoms to completely resolve but was about 8 years before I was able to stop taking kelp without symptoms returning. Today I use diet to handle my Hashimotos, but avoiding raw horseradish is not one of those changes! We grow our own and I love it. I am excited to try fire cider.
Toxic horseradish interesting... In my country, ground horseradish is sold in stores (Poland). We use it as an addition to cold meats, sourdough soups ("żur" /ʐur/). It is an ingredient of the addition to sausages, meats, especially for Easter, "ćwikła" /d͡ʑvikwa/ (cooked milked Red beets and ground horseradish)
This is hilarious timeing because last night my husband and I opened up some horseradish for our roast and we were talking about the possible health benefits 😊 Thanks!
I hear you on a lot of responses from friends and others who just like to hear themselves voice opinions! But, they do not know the subject they comment on. I have doctors who actually talk of the benefits of natural remedies, I made remedies for customers that asked when I had my own business, and these remedies worked when the prescriptions didn’t! God Bless you and keep the Faith !
I love these videos, I glean so much from your knowledge, which then leads me to research more. I purchased calendula seeds from you last winter. They are one of my favorites now. Looking forward to having more around the garden next year AND actually using them, along with my other herbs I've been planting. So much to do and learn and I just feel like there's not a lot of time. God has it all though. Have a blessed day!❤
I love horseradish- especially if it’s strong enough to clear your sinuses. 😊 Good thing a little goes a long way. This is another one that I still need to get for my herb garden, but right now in Florida, it’s still pretty cheap to buy jars of prepared horseradish. Many Blessings! ❤
@@marytatom4519 contain it, I tried that, it did not like it. But where I thought I dug it all.... I have lots of places it comes back, can't kill it where I don't want it😂
Thank you for your work on these videos and presenting this wonderful information. We place a little bit of raw ground horseradish on our ham sandwiches.
i like horseradish. i use the leaves when making my green leave broth. and like it shaved on red meats. i am going to look further into med applications, thanks for the info.
Heidi, there is no more an arrow to click on. Just click on "MORE." Omgoodness was I shock to hear about eating raw brassica. My doctor never told me that. Thank you so much for sharing that with me. 💐🙏🇺🇲
Sorry, rewatching, I remember years ago I went to a place I think was Arby's and loved their Horsey sauce! great on roast beef sandwiches!!! but I too love the stuff!
Thank you Heidi.🙂 Although I'm not a big fan, I find myself wanting this or ginger at this time of year when it's cold outside. 😊 Love and blessings!🤗💜
Slathered on sandwiches, toped on my steak with a beer, in a tea with honey, in a salad dressing which can also be poured into sub sandwich. Its great to clear the mucus with warm honey, lemon and brandy.
I Love to eat it on or with many foods, like meat, fish, as a dip for nacho chips, with mashed or fried potatoes, etc. Just got my horseradish into its 3rd year form where I initial planted it. Got to harvest some soon before the snow flies here in W. IL..
I put some in capsules about 20 seconds before you said so... :D Anxious to try and see how it helps. Also, making in a sauce. Love the flavor. As for "healthcare", let's call it what it is: sick dependency, aka medical field. Valuable info, thanks!
Umm your timing is perfect. Iv got two roots that I HAVE to process today... iv been so busy...I live in Horseradish capital of the world...so I'm a bit biased to the awesomeness of that beautiful root. I'm now getting busy with my eye goggles.😆
🌞Good morning Heidi I agree with you I don’t think any one can eat a large amount of horseradishes at once not even a 1/4 teaspoon with out coughing it takes your breath away it is good for you in the right amount I’m thinking of making some fire cider for my self great video today.
I have a half gallon of firecidar going now with my home grown horseradish in it. Also cook it in meals and make sauces Also, in the springtime when the leaves are just young, I will use those in my salads 😋
Ways our family uses it; make our own sauses, we like them potent. Cocktail sause, sweet horseradish pickles, dehydrated, it's in my fire cider right now, great Christmas gifts (small jars of sauses made with vinegar/water keep in fridge 6 months or longer but simply lose potency). When I'm about to get sick I'll crave horseradish condiments especially pickles or ill put it on celery or really anything. For sure helps my digestion. Ok I'll shut up now
Was looking up ways to get rid of a chelazion in my eye, dont want surgery, and came across horseradish. To eat that is, not put in my eye. Anyway im in “modern medicine” and the longer i am there the less modern it seems. Love your channel. Also many things are toxic in large quantities. Moderation is key. Would be interested if you have any home remedies for chelazion, Ive had mine for 2 months, the longest one has lasted, hot compresses have not helped as they usually do. Ive also been adding castor oil to my compresses, no luck. I’m going shopping now for horseradish.
This is one of those things that no matter how good it is for me, I'm not eating it! I've tried to like it. I just can't! 😆 PSA- If you grind it in a food processor do NOT take the lid off, stick your nose right down in there and take a big sniff! Trust me! Just don't do it! I truly thought I was going to die for a few minutes. 😂 On the plus side, my sinuses have never been so clear in all my life. 🤪
@@guynorth3277 I just do not like it, even in small quantities. I like other spicy things, but horseradish is a no-go. I sniffed it because I was expecting to smell it when I took the lid off of the food processor, but I didn't smell anything at all. So I was curious and went in for a closer sniff. Unbeknownst to me all of the death gas was lurking right at the surface of the bowl just waiting to get me! 🤣
I have a sauce I make using caramelized onions and horseradish as a sandwich spread and boy is it yummy, it must be refrigerated however 🙏 Kendra... Never thought of using it as muscle rub. Jinnie from homestead corner has a recipe for making homemade Vaseline using only olive oil and bees wax... 🤔🤔🤔
Yes, you can use any oil mixed with beeswax to get a similar consistency. Just like I do with the vapor rub which the store bought version typically contains petroleum jelly: th-cam.com/video/v1Nmut-GXa8/w-d-xo.html
@@enascott5963 it's really just a dump and taste... But I caramelize the onions, sauteed the horseradish in at the end of cooking and salt pepper and a little lemon juice and some mayo then blend it together. I hope this helps like I said it's kinda just dump and taste 🙏 Kendra
Funny we eat horseradish fairly often, several times a week because my husband is allergic to garlic, and onions. I have problems with my thyroid but haven’t noticed any problems from eating it.
It is only a problem if it is raw but if you are wanting to heal your thyroid, cutting out all raw brassicas and only having them cooked is one of the several steps to take along with cutting out all fluoride, including Teflon pans, and much more which is all listed off in the thyroid videos I linked to in the description box
I suspect from all the places I tried to get it out, a piece of root left in the ground grows back. I started mine from store bought, planted the top with bits of green on.
Very interesting as I never use it, BUT I have a low acting Thyroid so should be eating it cooked then? I have no specific reason for not eating it, so will try some
How do I dehydrate it? Chop it or slice it? Or grate it? For how long? How long will it last in a mason jar? What is the best way to store it the longest?
I have lost my sense of smell and as a result I love spice and horse radish is a welcome sensation. I got COVID in Dec of 2022 and used the Navage nasal irrigation and then regained my smell then I realized some food I typically eat I didn't like lol odd. I just reordered another Navage system and will restart those
We make cocktail sauce that is half catsup and half grated horseradish. I don’t know if catsup is on your no-no list but it’s great on seafood, to top meatloaf, hamburgers, fries… almost anything you use catsup on. I also make a mayo based sauce, same proportions.

It was only said to be toxic if eaten raw in high quantities, though still silly, haha
As a kid we had horseradish, hand grated, every winter on soup beef.
I'll be growing my 1st roots this year even though I can get it right down the road, I cannot wait.
I like horseradish. I'm growing it in the garden and am looking forward to my first harvest next year.
Hi, I put it in my fire cider too, and stick blend. And in your mayo that you taught me. Thanks for the video.
Plan to grow some here in Tennessee, a friend told me to put it in a pot since it went crazy in her garden and spread all over.
I totally agree with you. Thank you for such good information.
Have a blessed day!❤
I love horseradish on my pot roast & sometimes mixed with ketchup on my pot roast.
I love horseradish- especially if it’s strong enough to clear your sinuses. 😊 Good thing a little goes a long way. This is another one that I still need to get for my herb garden, but right now in Florida, it’s still pretty cheap to buy jars of prepared horseradish. Many Blessings! ❤
when you grow it contain it. it is now abundant and it creeps underground i love it.
@@marytatom4519 thank you!
@@marytatom4519 contain it, I tried that, it did not like it. But where I thought I dug it all.... I have lots of places it comes back, can't kill it where I don't want it😂
@@kleineroteHex yep, i just dig it, mow it. the root will exhaust. you made me chuckle as i feel ya!
@@marytatom4519 😊😊😊 one I tried to transplant/harvest, the root went over 4 feet under a stone slab 😊😊😊
Fascinating!
I've only thusfar used it in a culinary manner, but after your video I'll be jumping on the investigatory bandwagon! 😁😍😎
I been eating healthy since the 1970 herbs and plants i love great video
Thank you for your work on these videos and presenting this wonderful information. We place a little bit of raw ground horseradish on our ham sandwiches.
Bunch of thanks, Heidi.
This video is so helpful Heidi. I’m excited to make some fire cider for all my loved ones Thank you ❤
Thanks for reminding me to use it, a lot more. I use the young leaves too.👩🌾🌱
i like horseradish. i use the leaves when making my green leave broth. and like it shaved on red meats. i am going to look further into med applications, thanks for the info.
10:37 wow this is soo interesting and helpful. For hypothyroidism.. Don’t eat Brasikas raw.. cook out the goisigin (?) don’t eat the veggies raw 🥦. ✨
Heidi, there is no more an arrow to click on. Just click on "MORE." Omgoodness was I shock to hear about eating raw brassica. My doctor never told me that. Thank you so much for sharing that with me. 💐🙏🇺🇲
It really depends on your smart device, some, like iPhones, still have an arrow.
Sorry, rewatching, I remember years ago I went to a place I think was Arby's and loved their Horsey sauce! great on roast beef sandwiches!!! but I too love the stuff!
Love horseradish! Especially in my fire cider.
Good video , I enjoy horseradish , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Great info and love horseradish! I even put it on a sandwich or have some on the side with dinner 😊
It is great on baked beans!
Another wonderful informative video, thank you Heidi !
Thank you Heidi.🙂
Although I'm not a big fan, I find myself wanting this or ginger at this time of year when it's cold outside. 😊
Love and blessings!🤗💜
Thanks so much for such a great video. Amazing info! - just wondering if you have a video or recipe for the kimchi you make? God bless you! 💕
Yes I do: th-cam.com/video/dlc551xJGqk/w-d-xo.html
I loooooove horseradish! Glad to know it's so good for me. 😁
I love horse Radish , great Video
I just made a batch... it helps with heartburn for me. 4 weeks is what I do. master tonic or fire cider
Slathered on sandwiches, toped on my steak with a beer, in a tea with honey, in a salad dressing which can also be poured into sub sandwich. Its great to clear the mucus with warm honey, lemon and brandy.
I made the Russian tea, friendship tea, I think it's fabulous thank you so much for that recipe ⚘💯🙏🤍
Horse radish! 🥰 need to learn how to grow and use it.
🌞Good morning Heidi I agree with you I don’t think any one can eat a large amount of horseradishes at once not even a 1/4 teaspoon with out coughing it takes your breath away it is good for you in the right amount I’m thinking of making some fire cider for my self great video today.
Nice information, thank you . I put horseradish in my oxymel. I am interested to learn about you fire cider.
Thank you. ❣️
I have a half gallon of firecidar going now with my home grown horseradish in it. Also cook it in meals and make sauces
Also, in the springtime when the leaves are just young, I will use those in my salads 😋
It is in my pukka elderberry syrup I just remembered....
great topic as I'm looking for ways to get HR in my diet. HR is good in coleslaw but I'm going to check out the sauces. Thanks.
Horseradish roots are hard to find, so I may try to grow it.
I bought a few roots at a Polish store and planted them. The soon sprout leaves.
Ok I'll shut up now
Very interesting. 😊🌱💚🌻🐝
I love horseradish.
U can also eat the leaves blessings
Yep, I use them when making cucumber kimchi
PSA- If you grind it in a food processor do NOT take the lid off, stick your nose right down in there and take a big sniff!
I like it mixed with mayo and ketchup. Great with beef n onion pies.
Raw broccoli is also toxic in large quantities.....
As is kale
:) thanks Heidi 😊
I wanted to ask if one can consume the green leaves? And if so, raw, cooked, or both?
Yes, you can use the leaves either way. I use them to add to fermenting cucumbers to add flavor and retain the crispness
I love horseradish but don’t get it often since I’m the only one who likes it. Never realized it could be so beneficial. Phil
Do you have a recipe you would share?
@@enascott5963 it's really just a dump and taste... But I caramelize the onions, sauteed the horseradish in at the end of cooking and salt pepper and a little lemon juice and some mayo then blend it together. I hope this helps like I said it's kinda just dump and taste 🙏 Kendra
MIGHT is a big word...Its VERY hard to over consume raw horseradish, you'd have fire at BOTH ends😂
🤣
I use horseradish mustard in potato salad
love the stuff ,had a plant for 20years,, sadly i have become allergic to the mustard family ,sob`s
Always learning from you Heidi. Do you sell Horseradish seeds?
I suspect from all the places I tried to get it out, a piece of root left in the ground grows back. I started mine from store bought, planted the top with bits of green on.
No, I do not sell the seeds but yes, the easiest way to grow it is from a small piece of root
Lady you have some beautiful hair
Thank you :)
@@RainCountryHomestead ❤️❤️ your welcome
Oh, yes, the very young leaves are good in salad, too, to add some pep, and the young leaves are also good (in small quantities) cooked with cabbage.
Very interesting as I never use it, BUT I have a low acting Thyroid so should be eating it cooked then? I have no specific reason for not eating it, so will try some
Yes, it would be best to cook it in your case
How do I dehydrate it? Chop it or slice it? Or grate it? For how long? How long will it last in a mason jar? What is the best way to store it the longest?
Please see this video: th-cam.com/video/qxDpBL7To48/w-d-xo.html
I have lost my sense of smell and as a result I love spice and horse radish is a welcome sensation. I got COVID in Dec of 2022 and used the Navage nasal irrigation and then regained my smell then I realized some food I typically eat I didn't like lol odd. I just reordered another Navage system and will restart those
Is horseradish used in tartar sauce and spicey mustard !
It can be
My daughter ate “large” quantities when she was pregnant. She ate approximately a jar a day for a few weeks 😂😂😂
And I am sure that baby turned out very healthy!
I've NEVER eaten it...mainly because I have allergies and the sauce probably invariably has added things I'm allergic to like dairy, mustard or chili
It is a good thing that I have a whole playlist on many more beneficial herbs that are not related to horseradish
We make cocktail sauce that is half catsup and half grated horseradish. I don’t know if catsup is on your no-no list but it’s great on seafood, to top meatloaf, hamburgers, fries… almost anything you use catsup on. I also make a mayo based sauce, same proportions.
I was thinking that right before you said it! Who is that much in one sitting?😂
Right? And many do not even think of how stupid such a statement is so they avoid it entirely!
Remember the Powers That Be told us Coffee Was Bad, then They Told Us Eggs were bad. Blah Blah Blah. I love Horseradish.
Dihydrogen monoxide is toxic in high quantities, too.
Yep! haha
