DIY: Troubleshooting and changing a ballast for fluorescent lighting T12/T8/T5 process is the same

  • The process is the same for any fluorescent light ballast T5, T8, or T12. Here I show the process of troubleshooting a T5 ballast and changing it with a new one.

    How old was that light? I thought ballasts typically last 20 plus years

      I believe it was about 8 years old. I have seen them go bad in new fixtures to old ones from the 70's. For the most part the majority of them last reasonably long.

      @@SolidElectricalSolutions OK good, I initally thought it was my switch so I swapped that out, still nothing so figured it was the ballast. My volt tester still seeing power to the fixture. Thanks for the reply!

      @@SolidElectricalSolutions So I swapped out the ballast, and yup! That was the culprit. Our light's not that old, probably about the same as yours, 8 - 10 years. Good to have light again! :)
