2 prong outlet to 3 prong? Do or Don't?
มุมมอง 5572 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I explain why you cannot change 2 prong ungrounded outlets to 3 prong outlets, unless there is an equipment grounding conductor. Sometimes I over explain but I feel it is better to give the reason why rather than a simple yes or no. I hope you like the video and find it informative. 10 Tips for hiring an Electrical contractor

    I have a main panelboard which includes the meter and the main disconnect for 200 amps. This box has room for only 8 breakers but also has pass-thru lugs at the bottom of the box. These pass-thru lugs carry power (200 amps) to a subpanel. The main panelboard as well as the subpanel are Square D. Do I install the whole house surge protector in the main panelboard or the subpanel or both. Please advise.

    Actually not always. I bought some old equipmentand it blowed quickly just because they were rated 220V and the mains is 240V. One, an old Philips amplifier stopped working after one week, its preamp had Zenner 5W diodes that burned when used at 240V; another, an old HP lab power source also rated 220V instantly burned some opamps in the regulation part because the applied voltage was higher than max rating for them. An tube (valve) radio, just recapped, burned one tube filament after few weeks of use because instead 6.3V it had 7V at filaments. Many old power adapters with transformers ran hotter when used at 240V. All aplliances that gave problems (burning, running hotter) were powered through transformers. So, not, an 10% variation for the mains can actually destroy your equipment.

    • @SolidElectricalSolutions

    • @peteasmr2952
      @peteasmr2952 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the Hair Dryer is brand new and was purchased in Europe. Then it should automatically comply with EU standards which is 230 +- 5-10% to account for the country’s that still use 220 mostly the south, and 240 the UK while most of Northern Europe has switched to 230. You should be able to find this specified in the manual.

    One guy explained to me that basically for the most part voltages are used just to determine which type of electricity is rated for that appliance if the appliance says 110v or 120v, then you know you can use your normal AC outlet in your home. if it says 220v or 240v then that means you need to have double rail electricity going to an outlet, I'm sorry I do not know much about electricity and electrical systems I was just trying to share information that I learned

      @@123elvislives3 phase in Europe is generally 400v on a wye transformer with 230 phase to neutral and 400 phase to phase. Northern Europe gets 3 phase to the home but only Norway still has the older IT nett 230 3 phases from a delta transformers. However they are slowly switching to the new TN nett system that is now standard. I can’t speak much for Spain but I doubt it is much different. Europe changed the standard from 220 to 230 + / - 5%-10% in 2008. So if the amp was made before then the tolerances might be out of range. But a lot of older audio equipment often has taps on the transformer inside often with a selector for 220 and 240 as the UK is 240/410. So there usually is a way to change between the two if it’s tolerance is smaller. If the device didn’t specify try to find the service manual. I hope by now you have found out the tolerance for the amp. As even in the UK the voltage can get to 245. So I doubt it was an issue but never know without seeing the spec sheet. If the Amp states it can be used in the UK I suspect all you have you do is change the cord. But id still suggest trying to find out for certain first. If your opening the unit up and can safely see the transformer it might state on it or have the taps necessary for 240. Maybe a part number but that could be hard to track down depending on when it was made. The taps may not be identifiable so the service manual should help. It may also not have them. If it was made after 2008 it should comply with the new standard but I don’t see why it would state 220 then. Good luck and stay safe be cautious and if you aren’t sure what your doing find a shop that can help.

    I consistently have 125 volts measured at the outlets. I have audio amplifiers that don't like the higher voltage. Would that be something to contact the utility company about, and could they do anything about it?

    • @SolidElectricalSolutions
      @SolidElectricalSolutions ปีที่แล้ว

      The utility has a certain range they legally have to provide it within and 125 is about the threshold I have seen, but you would need to contact them to find out that exact number. You can always put in a step down transformer to get it into a range that they like.
