    I LOVE colouring with Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pens and with the Staedtler Multi-Ink Pigment Brush Pens. The pigment-based inks tend to stay on the surface of the page longer than dye-based inks and that gives me enough time to do some colour blending even on non-treated/non-sized paper. When a viewer mentioned that they had seen a set of pens/markers offered by TooliArt that stated they were pigment-based, you know I had to try them out. :)
    Watch and find out - is this set of 36 pens (for just under $20US) truly a set of pigment-based ink pens??
    Here is a link to the set of 3 videos where I talk about and demonstrate Pitt Pens and their Staedtler cousins. :)

    Thank you, Connie! I watch your videos consistently and find them so helpful! But I have never taken the time to comment. Thank you for all your videos! You explain things so well-it must be the teacher in you!

    The Zebra Metallic Brush Pens are characterized as being “pigment ink.” They are quite opaque. Other Zebra pens are described as using “dye based ink.” I own a set of 7 of the metallic brush pens. Zebra sells a “set” of 41, but it only has 6 colors, according to a complaining Amazon customer. Kind of fascinating stuff. I messed around a little with the Pitts and the Zebras. I got interesting streaks and striations, but little blending. Thanks for your deep dives.

      I think metallic water-based pens are almost always pigment ink as dye ink is, by nature, usually translucent and metallic pens (and white pens) are usually opaque. But I could be wrong. :)
      Glad you liked the video! :)

    I love the Steadtler pigment pens and they work great on Lulu Mayo book paper. Best in small areas not full backgrounds.

      They work so wonderfully on smooth paper, don't they? :) And yes - large spaces can get streaky. Enjoy your Staedtler pens! :)

    You are right, that same barrel is used in sooooo many other brands of water based markers. I think I paid $30 CAD for a set of 120 and they look identical, just a different brand name. It's kind of disappointing to see that from Tooli-art

    Good video, thank you! I have the Staedtler and Pitt combo (copied your swatch order!) and use them exclusively on my Sarah Renae Clark planner coloring sections. I also use them on many coloring pages that have illustrations on both sides. I love them!!

    I feel so bad :( I was the viewer who saw these on Amazon. But they advertised them as pigment based and I thought of you…I hope you return them! I want to write Tooli art and tell them how disappointed I am in that description. I love their paint pens and didn’t expect this from them.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Please, please don't feel badly!! That's what I'm here for - to test things out to potentially save you guys from purchasing things that aren't what they seem. :) I'm glad you pointed them out to me so that I could take a better look at them! I did send them back and Amazon will refund me so no harm done. :) And you're right - one wouldn't expect this sort of misstep from a company like TooliArt. I left an Amazon review stating that I thought the pens were mislabelled and don't contain a pigment-based ink so that, hopefully, others won't spend their money on something that isn't what it claims to be.
      I appreciate you making me aware of the markers - please don't worry yourself! :)

    I wonder if they meant they're 'highly pigmented' as in they are bright and colorful, not that they have pigment inks. They definitely look like white-label brush/fine nib markers we see all over the place! I hadn't realized the ones you use in your video are pigment based and that's why they behave so differently. I kept trying to do the same with my water-based markers and not getting the same results even on the same paper!! I do have one set that works better/closer to the pigment ones, and it's the thick-barreled set from Ohuhu. I find them to be less streaky than other water-based markers I have, and I CAN get better blends on small areas with them. I don't think they're pigment ink though, but their formulation seems different than the other ones I've tried.

      Ah - yes, lots of the colouring that I do is with Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pens or their Staedtler cousins, the Multi-Ink Pigment Brush Pens. Those are both true pigment-based ink pens. :)
      True - TooliArt might have been referring to the the fact that the inks are highly coloured but to say "pigment-based" means something different (to me, anyway :)). It could be a translation thing, though - maybe they didn't realize what they were saying. :) Thanks for chiming in!

    I bought a set of the Staedtler pigment pens. I use them easily with my Pitt pens. I use them mainly for details and sometimes to add a bit of color over top of pencil work. They are quite useful for colorists, IMO. I am still building my set of Pitts. I’ll hit up Beaverton Blick again in October with a list to buy more in OR w/out paying shipping or sales tax. I’d love to find more Staedtlers! Or other pigment based pens. Thanks for sharing what you found!

      I use both the Pitt Pens and the Staedtler pens for the bulk of my colouring - so easy on the hands! They are (fingers crossed :)) coming out with a 60 set of the Staedtler pigment pens in July so there should be 24 new colours in that set. I've got the big set on pre-order. :D
      Glad you enjoyed the video!

      @@susanmorgan5591 I preordered mine from Amazon Germany but now when I go back to look, they're only being sold by a third party seller that doesn't ship to Canada. I'm hoping that still means my original order is ok! I think you can also preorder them on Amazon UK but they're quite a bit more expensive than they were on the original Amazon Germany listing directly through Amazon.
      This is the listing on Amazon Germany currently: www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B0CTKPMY8V/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    They must have been mis labeled on Amazon. The box said water based.

    • @colouringchemist
      @colouringchemist  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Very true - there was no wording about being "pigment-based" on the packaging. It's too bad they have them listed that way on Amazon, though - a bit misleading. :)

    Hello Connie May I ask whether the full set of Staedtler have all the colours. The smaller sets do they have different colours compared to the full set 💐

    • @jicolourist

      As far as I can tell the little sets are all part of the large set. So you would have duplicates if you bought both.

      Jody is correct (thanks, @jicolourist !). As of now, there are 36 colours total in the Staedtler pigment brush pen line and all of those colours are in the 36 set. The little sets are just smaller subsets of the bigger 36 set. Staedtler is supposed to be coming out with a larger 60 colour set in July - we'll see! :)
