These look good but then again so do my old (I don't say vintage, I say old) lenses from the 1970s. I paid $400 for an entire set and the quality pretty closely matches these. The reason I share this is because I think far too many young filmmakers are convinced to buy stuff they don't really need. If I gave my set to Armando, he'd create beautiful stuff. The true beauty is Armando (and all filmmaker's)brains, creativity and vision. Carpenters don't obsess over TH-cam videos about hammers. They use what they have to build. We should do likewise.
THIS!!!!!!! Ive been one to rat race with cameras and have been in debt for 3 years paying off equipment when I could have just saved so much money buying something smaller form than what I bought
@@CringePanda Got 2 sets. The one 1️⃣ speak of is Canon FD. Bought before prices went up. The other is Minolta MD set. Both excellent. Some old Pentax and CY Zeiss too. Bottom line is many old cheap sets are excellent in my eyes. Mind you I’ve been slowly buying cheap deals for 18 years now. Garage sales etc.
As an owner of these lenses, what Armando said in this review is 100% accurate. For the price, you simply cannot beat it. Every time I use these lenses, I feel inspired. And that’s how you should feel every time you pick up your camera. Great review as always brother!
These are awesome, my only fear is wildly random quality control. I've heard a lot of people say they have had loose or grinding mechanics in certain ones, but I'm wondering if that was the initial releases and if they have gotten any better. If they have, I'd love to buy some
is it possible for you to make a comparison of nisi athena’s vs the dzo arles 🙏 i’m trying to figure out if the extra money equal better image quality in this case
You're shooting on fullframe cameras, but will this lens look good on a super35 like komodo or C70? with a focal reducer maybe? Is it even worth it if you aren't getting the full quality of the lens?
@Armando Happy to hear about your experience with these on super35 (as I have a Blackmagic Ursa 12k that I was curious about paring these with). ALL of the examples and TH-cam videos I've seen have ONLY been with full frame cameras. I was worried about the loss of "character" from the outer edges of the lens. I currently have a set of Xeens (classic). How would you compare these to the Arles?
Hey, awesome lens and cinematography! My FX6 should be arriving next week!! Are there cheaper lenses that can be adapted to the FX6 that would have that kind of character? I hear people say Helios or Canon FD...what do you think??
Thank you, in regards to "cheaper" lenses not really. These lenses are truly special, the only thing that comes close are Arri Supreme Primes or Zeiss as I said in my video and those cost 10x more. Canon FD and Helios are specialty lenses, I wouldn't even put them in the same class. Also there's only 1 Helios lens, where you have a full set of 10 with the DZO.
I did a lens test for a movie I'm shooting. Tried the arles... don't know if people are just not use to other cine lenses, or what... but I was NOT impressed. They weren't good. Ended up going with zeiss nano for the film
Strange because they’re very similar to Arri Signature Primes. In fact someone on TH-cam did a side by side comparison and I’d argue they were almost identical. The difference was 98%.
@mondobytes I use signatures quite frequently. They aren't in the same ballpark. color rendition isn't close, And the set I tested which came directly from dzo themselves (they told me where to go and what lenses to use) were mushy . I guess you could say both sets have limited breathing. But beyond that? Arles are def in the budget lens catagory. I found the nisi athenas better (albeit a stop slower)
@@dp_zee I dunno man, that has not been my experience and even seeing the video Cody made the Arri are not 10X better: th-cam.com/video/KO7NhqnkL50/w-d-xo.htmlsi=t_rKHdw3EYF3usfu
Around 4:00 You said the vignet is Part of their Character. Am i wrong? The Footage you took from the driving Truck is amazing and These Lenses are very interresting. I understood that you like the vignet. I was just surprised about the vignet. I watched many Reviews about them, but no one mentioned the vignet.
@@claudio6032 Got it when I saw your original post with the question mark I understood it as you weren't aware they had vignetting even though I mentioned it in the video. It's definitely a characteristic that I'd prefer to add in post but it doesn't bother me that it has it.
DZO.. is truly coming up to the "Big Boys Hollywood" Lens...
always amazing to see your videos.

Yup, mount is interchangeable.

Where are these sample scenes from ? A movie shoot ? Is it done by DZO or you ? Is this a real production or just sample footage for the lenses

We just need a 27 or 28mm still :P
On the Making Of of the Gentleman Series i saw they used a 29mm with the Sony Venice.
