With introduction of CMINDS at IITB and YSAI at IITD, the test as well as interview were completely different.
At both places they asked me things related to core Mathematics and Statistics including Probability, Linear Algebra, Statistics, Calculus, etc.
Additionally at IITD, we had 3 coding questions of 10 marks each. At IITD, scoring approximately 50% in written test was enough to get into interview
Note: I got selected at both the places and is joining IITB for direct PhD

Dada, if someone got 7.4 CGPA during BTech and during Direct-PhD in IIT manage to score 8+ CGPA during course, will he be considered for PMRF fellowship? Plz tell what can one do to increase their chances???

Direct entry is diffcult. you can go for lateral, for that you need 8.5 in PhD first year

Yes
1) try to get as much good CGPA as possible (preferrably 9+)
2. At least a paper in first year of PhD (even if you are not first author).
3) A strong Research Proposal
4) A strong LOR

Try to prepare Linear Algebra, Probability, Data structure algorithms and basics of ML

@@bumblebee9978 I am not sure about MS by Research but atleast all the MS students who's GATE score I am aware is 750+.
For PhD, qualification is enough but ya you will be having an additional test and assignment along with what it is for MS students before interview
