If they had arrested the woman right then and there to begin with, they would have never found the kid. That's the scarier part of this.
They would have, because someone would have done a complete run through of the house so it could be condemned.

That's true, however the amount of time between arresting her and going through with procedures to get it cleaned up may have taken months, long enough for the child to starve

maybe it’s bc i’m the child of a hoarder, but i have barely any empathy for this woman. not many understand the trauma that is caused by growing up in the home of one. many parents have mental illness, and i’m not saying that the ones that get help, and truly try their best shouldn’t be parents. however when ur in ur parent’s/parents’ house, and constantly subject & surrounded by their mental illness where there is no way to run from it is traumatizing. most of the times when the hoarding is bad, even in ur room they will find a way to hoard their stuff in ur own space. robbing u of having a space where u can express urself, do activities, etc. it’s truly a nightmare, and it breaks my heart how many children r living in those conditions where the child and parent/parents aren’t receiving any help.

I didn’t go through it but I got no empathy either.
I was also a child of a hoarder. Well, sort of. it wasn't as bad as this lady, but it was getting there. I had no space for my own things, and I had no privacy either. I always got excited when we moved somewhere else because that meant we'd have to pack everything and store them away at our new home. But eventually, it gets messy again. I've become a bit of a minimalist. I've grown to not get attached to everything I have, and keep only what I need.

There’s also a difference between being a hoarder and a child abuser. I would have sympathy for her if the kid wasn’t in the picture but mental illness doesn’t get to be an excuse for child abuse

When you think about it, Burges approach probably saved that kid. Think about it. If they had arrested her right at the door, they wouldn't have heard the boy. And, I doubt she would have said anything, so he would have died down there. Because they came back later and walked in to the house, they heard his screams, and saved him. Burges method is what saved the day.

@Jessica Sveen and before her house can be condemned an inspector has to do a walk through of the house before he can signal the crew to tear it down, I am pretty sure that a well trained inspector would've heard a child whimpering.

i still have a slight hoarding problem but my gf was the reason why i got so much better. i was abandoned by family and kept the littlest things that reminded me of them so i know there’s a place in their heart for me. since I’ve been with my gf i got much much better and for once im proud of myself. and that im loved by my gf and her family. some people have different reasons but mine is because no one ever cared. my psych and therapist help me so much to improve my life. now i don’t feel clustered emotionally. physically didn’t affect me but the emotions did. im proud of myself!

My aunt is a compulsive hoarder. She saves anything cardboard: boxes, toilet paper tubes, milk cartons, packaging, etc. She says she saves it for her grandchildren's school projects. She has stuff taped to the fridge from 20 years ago, and the tables are covered in framed photos, so I don't know where they eat. When her father died, she had all his old furniture moved into her home, and now you can't get around the downstairs.
My aunt was the same way but she also collected broken glass broken mirrors and furniture home aid supplies everything. I was trying to get into a bedroom one time and sliced my thigh open on a huge chunk of mirror glass.
I have a small habit of the same, but it is far more minor compared to these situations.
@@audrab27 Do what my uncle does: wait until she's out, then stuff as much junk as you can into recycling bags and drive it to the waste center yourself. She rarely notices what's missing.
The same with my stepdad, though not as severe.

Becoming a hoarder is not as far fetched as most ppl assume. Go through a hard moment in life alone without support of anyone, stop cleaning, stop caring depression turns to something worse n boom you are now smegel from Lord of the rings but with EVERY item you touch it becomes "my precious". Some ppl have it some ppl don't but it'll show it's face during your hardest times in life. It sucks.
I totally believe you👍👍. I'm all what you mentioned but not a hoarder. I only have the necessities like a recliner, pillow, blanket, my meds, enough clothing, 1 bowl, 1 cup, fork&spoon, and shelter😂😂.

There is truth in that.
I have been through some hard times in my life and let my environment and my personal hygiene suffer.
From my experiences with hoarders, it is triggered by a tragedy or sudden, traumatic loss. That's why they feel the need to cling onto things, fear of devastating loss. The people I know who are suffering from hoarding have experienced the tragic death or suicide of a loved one, and their hoarding is a way of clinging to things so they don't have to ever feel the loss they felt ever again.
That’s very true. My dad struggled with loosing his dad, then his only son, my brother, died very unexpectedly. He ended up as a hoarder.
It's an illness, there are a lot of people like this, such a shame.

It is enough for choice for them but when kids or family members or animals are at risk because of them it makes it hard to have pity but. You are absolutely right this is a illness and a pretty bad one.

You are not arresting her for being messy your arresting her for literally creating a health hazzard, seriously hurting many familys financial situation. Putting lives in danger including her own and a multitude of other reasons. Hoarding is very dangerous for everyone involved.
Not to mention it’s a breeding ground for roaches, flies, mosquitoes, rodents, snakes, mold, bacteria, wasps, termites, fleas, tics, etc… and all of that is right next to your house just waiting to come over. Not to mention the structural, electrical, and pipe damaged that can’t be repaired because no one can get to it.

You can arrest and charge a hoarder, but getting a conviction for any of those charges might not be happening.

The moment that there was the strange noises leading to more investigating should have been the key to call for more backup. If you don't know how many people are in the house, you don't just keep going gunho with just the two of you and no one else on the way at minimum.
After a while it does get like this, my dad has been a hoarder my entire life. I am 23. When I was young it was so bad that I couldn't stay with him and I stayed with his neighbour downstairs instead. He couldn't sleep in his bed because he'd piled stuff on to it. There was a 10cm wide path he has left on the floor between his kitchen and the sofa. You couldn't shut the bathroom door because there were years worth magazines and newspapers in front of it. His bath was useless and filled with stuff, he hadn't ran it in years. His desk was covered in mugs that he'd hoarded filled with pens that he hoarded. Anything and everything was important in some way that only he knew. We had tried for years to help, the local council cleaned his flat for him once and within six months it was back to being filled with stuff. It is traumatic to grow up in this environment, never knowing order or cleanliness. People think that this level of hoarding is rare but it's not.

it's a vicious circle of depression. Depression wanes and tires you, too tired to clean, then sh*t piles up, mess makes you feel bad, fall deeper in depression, next thing you know the mess is so big you can't even know where to begin. Give up on yourself, next circle of Hell.

@@JustinAdamson270 My argument is that living in such a mess is a clue of depression or similar mental illness, not that suffering from depression allows letting go of cleanliness. Depression is lived differently from one person to another. It can range from alcoholism, mutilation, apathy to crying for no reason and suicidal ideation, fatigue is well inside that spectrum. Your argument is similar to ''cancer didn't kill me so cancer is not an excuse to die''. It's what the illness does. It makes everything tedious.

One of my friends used to live next to a hoarder at a older condominium many years ago that went up in flames shortly after he moved to a cheaper apartment and that person's suite burnt to the ground because it was a literal fire trap. That person did survive but with severe burns (+ other wounds). Just because you can keep stuff doesn't always meen you should, if it's something very important like a Rolex your grandfather passed down to you then keep it, there's a really good chance that there's a bunch of stuff that you don't exactly need, that someone else somewhere else could really use/have.
if you are dealing with a person with hoarding issues it can be difficult on all parties involved. set small goals. try asking them to sort a pile for keep, trash, donate, etc. do one box per day or week whichever one is more doable for them.
please stop saying the female cop's approach saved the kid... a coincidence isn't a save. they were fortunate the lady let them enter. as far as I know after in hoarding cases either property manager or police go over the home and therefore would've found the child. doesn't always happen that way and this is fiction and most hoarding situations are not like this.
Sure people go over but it could be days or weeks before that happens and the kid could die in the meantime. It’s not exactly high priority to go over to an uninhabited property to inspect damage
I call BS. I had to clean up a house that was a hoard. It was SO this squalid. Sure, there were no missing persons kidnapped, but there were so kids living in squalor. If I had it my way, dfcs would have been called. And how many stories of people being found dead in their hoards? It happens all too often.
And i think it's more the cop had the compassion to enter and try to help the woman rather than just slappimg cuffs on her and leaving. Being a good cop is more than making arrests and writing tickets.
Arresting the woman the first time would have meant documenting the house the first time they went out. They saw through the door opening when she first opened the door, they saw that evidence of the health code violation that they are out there for continues on inside the house. They had plain view doctrine enabling them to just walk straight through the house wherever they pleased since the reason why they were out there to begin with was the mess that they can clearly just see doesn't have an ending point anywhere in the house.

I was terrified the woman was hoarding a bunch of kids in the basement. It ended up being one kid but still...terrifying. And to think if they arrested her in the first place they would have never found the kid. 😶🌫️😱

They should show this to the officers. How personal convictions will get in the way of doing right by those who are the most likely to fall to abuse. Because cops have. A bully mentality so they see bullies as equals. Psychology doesn't lie.

as a child of a hoarder, i've never been in a situation like this, but i can tell you that hoarders' view on their kids is almost the same as how they feel about their hoard. my social security card is lost in a garage with stuff piled up to the ceiling, so was my birth certificate, so were my baby pictures. and none of that was ever the hoarder's fault, according to them. some of them can't love a child, and yet they can't let them go.

because of the yard fines .. it takes longer for services to come out easier to get the cops , that's why cops are overworked and there's not enough social workers .
My friend's mom was a hoarder she couldn't even invite anyone to her house and it smelled disgusting she always spent the night at my or other friends house she loves her mom but she wasn't going to live in that place and her mom wasn't willing to change so she moved out after graduation she now lives with her boyfriend

I know its an illness my sister had it and her husband im a neat freek so when i went to her flat there was numerous arguments between us because i couldn't understand it and wouldn't we were not brought up like this.When we all lived at home she was always sweeping always cleaning.We dont know what happened in her life for her to turn out this way.Its very frustrating for someone looking in aswell as the person going through it.I loved her so much she had an operation on her back and it all went wrong sadly she passed i miss her everyday i wish i was more sympathetic than so self righteous 😔
I can tell you one way it can happen: depressive episodes. You fall into a rut, you leave things because you don’t have the mental or physical energy, things pile up, then you don’t know where to start, and even thinking about starting makes you feel sick.
some people when forced to live with over zealous neat freaks where love is conditional on HOW you do not WHO you are it triggers something inside them so they don't want to clean ever again because its painful being told it's not good enough= you're not good enough . My Bio mom was a a tidy person , but she's wasn't obsessive like her mother . When she had a mental illness of sever depression though she couldn't clean

This is history for people who will develop a hoarding issue in America is astronomically large. I think just off the top my head without really looking it up on that it’s something like 1 in 3 and that’s a huge amount of people. Now granted not everyone who has a hoarding issue gets this bad however, a lot do.

Clearly a separate comment from what was seen here. I have lately been wonder how much has hoarding become a problem in the modern world. I can understand the easy collection of stuff and then feeling overwhelmed with the idea of cleaning it up. Like a mountain you cannot move but at the same time the inability to function as well must be just as terrible. What I cannot understand are those that keep adding to their mountain and are willing to. I think that is the thinnest line that separates many people. Mental illness is no joke and just as tragic when it affects others.
@Gi Gi this is definitely worth talking about. Most are the elderly but one can argue that this can be a learned ability too. I can also see like you said the issue of cheep products being available to build up.

Actually, they legally cannot do that. They need a search warrant which they do not have meaning that they technically broke the law and any evidence found will not be charged against her because it was an improper search
This is very much a "TV" hoarder. You'll see some stuff around and papers but it's all very cleanish. Real hoarders have mountains of piles with flies, rats and cockroaches around with the house under threat of being condemned.
The biggest reason of hoarding disorder is they can't prioritize things. Not only letting thing go.
But anything, health, schedule, routine etc.
They don't know where to start or what's the next step. They don't know what to keep, what's less important.

That's what happens when hoarders are treated with patients and kindness. You have to treat them like the disgusting animals they are. People think they are victims and they use that to their advantage.

My house has not that much stuff so at least I can walk in my house If I see floor because I get anxious about me having a full house with too much stuff if I don't want to keep it. My house is not going to cause me anxiety when I can't walk safely

I see for saying, why did they arrest her right away? If they arrested her right away, they would’ve never found the kid he would probably have died of starvation or dehydration.
This is what happens when cops have a soft heart on people,yes it's ok to show some compassion as a police officer but when it stops you from doing your job that's when it becomes a problem...
That also comes down to what is their job? Should we be expecting police to serve the community? Or to just arrest people?

this is a great representation of why police are and need to be harsh. obviously these shows arent real and what they show in the shows isnt always accurate but, this shows that every situation needs to be handled with force. Not dancing around egg shells all day to make people feel safe and happy.

She would probably have slammed the door on their faces and lock herself in, forcing them to go inside, where they will hear the boy. Or once in the precinct, she would beg to go back, knowing the child's locked in the room, scared that the cleaners will find him or that he'll run out of food/drink.
@@iagreewithyou3478 Yes, it was a happy accident the boy was found. The issue with jailing in this case is that mental health issues shouldn't automatically be a crime. It seems to me it would more productive to have a doctor help, rather than throwing someone in a cell to just get worse and worse. As for the last bit, I'm gonna go ahead and suggest that going that deep into speculation on her actions is overdoing it a bit, given she's a character written into a television show.
@@spellbound_1 When they are jailed, it doesn't mean it's the end for them. The system is finding ways to introduce intervention/treatment. And by forcibly removing them from the premises, they can have the house cleaned.
And all those assumptions of her actions are not farfetched. They were based on her actions later, and how people with issues like her are most likely to act given that they have something else to hide (other than her trash).
And as you said, this is a show, many dramatic things happen in a show.
@@iagreewithyou3478 actually it's very rare for people to get actual help in jail. Jail is not meant to help you, it's meant to punish you. It's why we have such a high rate of people reoffending
