  • Aram Khachaturian's Waltz from the Masquerade Suite, presented at the New Year's Concert on 27 December 2022 by the Makris Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Predrag Gosta.
    MORE ABOUT THE COMPOSITION
    -----------------------------------------------------
When the renowned Aram Khachaturian was tasked with composing music for a play titled "Masquerade" in 1941, he faced quite the challenge. Set to premiere at Moscow's Vakhtangov Theatre, this play was inspired by the poetic genius Mikhail Lermontov. But it was one piece, a waltz, that truly tested Khachaturian's skill. 🎭✨
Can you imagine the feeling of hearing a beautiful waltz that dances between joy and sorrow? That's what Nina, the play’s heroine, felt. And that's what Khachaturian aimed to capture. However, crafting that "perfect" waltz tune was no easy feat. Desperate for inspiration, Khachaturian turned to his old teacher, Nikolai Myaskovsky, who offered melodies from Lermontov's era. And while they didn't directly inspire him, this dive into history led Khachaturian to a breakthrough, creating a waltz that flowed effortlessly after.
Fun fact: He dedicated that waltz to Alla Kazanskaya, the talented actress who brought Nina to life. 🌟
But here's the twist-right after "Masquerade" hit the stage, it was abruptly halted due to Germany's invasion of the USSR. A masterpiece, born amidst challenges and cut short by history.
