Wolfgang A. Mozart: Requiem - Lacrimosa & Amen
newly edited and completed by Michael Ostrzyga ( @MichaelOstrzyga )
Recorded on July 1, 2022 at Berlin Philharmonic, Germany
In the 1960s, a sketch by Mozart of an Amen Fugue surfaced. It can be assumed that it was intended for the Requiem when Mozart wrote it down: Not only is there a sketch for the Rex tremendae and the Magic Flute on the same page, written like the Requiem in 1791, but there are also striking compositional references to the Introit. Moreover, Mozart did not work on any other work during this period in which the word "Amen" appears. The arrangement of the reeds in Mozart's manuscript, as has sometimes been pointed out, does indeed leave far too little space for an extensive fugue at this point, but the exchange and insertion of further reeds was common and also occurred in Mozart's work. It is surely no coincidence that in the years immediately before his death Mozart devoted himself to Handel's Messiah, which concludes with an extended Amen fugue. For the overall architecture of the Requiem, such an Amen Fugue, roughly in the middle of the work, can form a supporting pillar which, together with the pillars at the beginning and end of the work, Kyrie and Cum sanctis tuis, forms a great arched architecture. In the Amen Fugue, which was realised for the new edition, Mozart's view of Bach is particularly evident, partly because it is also very clear in the Kyrie Fugue.
It is impossible to imagine what Mozart would have invented, or perhaps had already invented. Nevertheless, the new addition was about the thought experiment of deducing the extent and nature of Mozart's instructions from everything that exists in someone else's hand. In this way, it is possible to derive - only incompletely, hypothetically, of course - instructions for completing the Requiem as a "whole", based on Mozart's presumed intentions in the form of general procedures, melodic material, contrapuntal constellations, harmonic progressions, instrumental accompaniments, concrete borrowings from older works by Mozart or Handel and Bach, and so on. Once I had uncovered this "composing backwards", I tried to compose the Requiem forwards again, starting from the music Mozart had written up to his death and the influences he bundled in the Requiem. ~ Michael Ostrzyga

Under the roof of Collegium Musicum Berlin, some 450 students and staff of Freie Universität and Technische Universität are gathered to follow their shared passion for music. With most of the musicians having no professional education in music, our two orchestras, two choirs and one big band take great pride in their high level of achievement.

This song will play in the credits at the end of the world.
No, it will be Dies irae
Agnus die, choral version.
That could be coming.. 🙏
wow... you said a mouth full......,
Not just a song but parts of the Prayers in the Mass for the Dead in the Traditional Roman Catholic Mass of the Latin Rite.
Mozart's "Lacrimosa" from the Requiem in D minor is a hauntingly poignant masterpiece that transcends time, echoing the profound emotions of its creator's final days. The mere 45 seconds Mozart crafted before his passing encapsulate a spectrum of emotions, from sorrow to awe. The fact that this unfinished symphony endures, with his students completing the composition, speaks volumes about Mozart's enduring influence as a teacher and the timeless resonance of his musical legacy. It's a testament to the power of art to evoke chills and stir the soul, even centuries after its creation.
Beautifully put
So true
Serious question: why do the pieces always get introduced with the key e.g. Dm?
@@user-fe9vh3fi9c Mostly so that it's easier for the composer to write it without having to manually write in sharp or flat notes. It also denotes the "mood" the piece is supposed to be played. Hope this helped!
I want this to play on my funeral….it’s on my will. Genius Amadeus.
Why oh way so fast? It is Requiem for goodness sake! What was this woman director thinking.
Take the vaccine
talk about hybris
@@marcellogenesi6390It still sounds beautiful
Me too.
So sad and so beautiful.
Those requiems were funeral themes! They supposed to be sad but Mozart took them to the interstellar level!
Lacrimosa, a true blessing to my ears 😭
Süssmayr, who wrote most of it, would be pleased to hear that.
I don't care that Mozart couldn't finish it. He was the one who started it. And that's good enough for me. Magnificent piece of music!
Love to have this for my funeral.
And who would think a university orchestra could be this good
Well they are training to be a professional musicians. 😉 Any musician at university level has to be good otherwise they wouldn’t make the cut haha.
Magnificent Mozart, amazing choir and orchestra ,never get tired of listening to this wonderful music !
Love i❤t
fantastic version, one of the best!. the rhythm, pauses, the voices... spot on!!
Oh I don't think so.. very good but not (the) best. The rhythm goes a bit too fast. I listened many versions of Mozart's Lacrimosa but Karajan's version is ONE & ONLY. No one can compare with him (except of Mozart of course)
Thank you for your feedback!
As an amateur orchestra, we feel very honoured to be mentioned in the same sentence as Karajan. ☺️
GÖ
This is far too fast for a lamentation prayer. It sounds magnificent at 75% speed. A shame modern musicians feel the need to rush through piece like speed demons.
@@rashakor nice tip! If only youtube didn't ruin the sound☹️
This was so beautiful it made me cry.
Surely one of the finest performances & best recorded versions ,of one of the greatest pieces of music ever bestowed to humanity. Bravo !!!
Fun fact: 0:40 are the last original 9 bars mozart written in Lacrimosa, the rest was written by someone his wife hired. If you listen closely you can hear the difference in pitch.
Whatever
By his pupil
No wonder the best parts are the first 40 seconds. The rest is meh.
Stunning in its power.
Imagine if he had finished it...
Ano 🤍🕊️
@@CarlosHamilton1947 Very yes!!!
I agree!
I honestly think that honor goes to Dies Irae Verdis Requiem 😌Buut lacrimosa is still really good
Wow wow wow. My heart was beating out of my chest and it brought tears to my eyes. Brilliant piece of music. 👏👏👏👏❤️❤️
I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, And decided to play around with the sound setting with some music. For the "vocal" equalizer setting, I chose this. Literal chills, and it felt like I was right in the center of the room as this was playing, surrounded by the awe inspiring sounds of the orchestra and the chorus. This has got to be one of my favorite performances of this piece now, it is just Absolutely perfect, there is no other way to describe it. Bravo!
Try that with some quality stereo floorstanding speakers.
Out of this world. Just beautiful music for the soul.
Out of this world ,genius Mozart ,magnificent choir and orchestra !
The genius of classical composers is an endless source of inspiration. Their ability to create intricate, emotional masterpieces is a testament to the boundless creativity of the human spirit. 🌟🎵*
Bruh my eyes were teary, so much passion conveyed.
Immortal Mozart...
Immortal music
if this song was a drug, i’d unapologetically inject it into my veins everyday for the rest of my life.
Exquisite, thank you 🙏
Absolutely beautiful!

Wonderful, a sense of lift and amazement.
I really like this version. The vocals aound very clear and powerful.
Absolutely beautifully arranged!
OMG! I am speechless!
Wunderschön 👌🏼👏
Sublime !!! El último vuelo del alma !!✍️
Donka was only conducting the choir.
As the orchestra knows "the drill".
All in all MESMERISING.
Thank you :)
Exactly, clearly conducting only the choir. The orchestra runs by itself...
Was für ein toller Auftritt! Beeindruckend.
beautiful... blessed if watch live...
Simply amazing
Masterpiece Bravo
Espectacular!!!
Magnific!❤
It's really unbelievable that someone sick and bedridden would write like that...5000 IQ.
Una belleza!!!!!!! Gracias
Excellent!
This beautiful work of art and emotional turmoil always makes me wonder why we as a society think music isn’t worth the investment for the few of us to pursue it. We need this in our lives.
SO BEAUTIFUL
Maravilloso
Maravillosa interpretación.
Splendid!
Yes and conducted by Karl Böhm is great
Beautiful!
Beautiful!!!😍😍😍❤❤
Amazingly beautiful tugs at the heart strings.

He was a genius. My mom took me to see the movie Amadeus, when I was 10. I didn’t appreciate it then, but what a prodigy he was.
Perfect
Nossa!!! Que lindo!!! 😍

D'ailleurs Mozart n'a rien compris à Bach ....

Thank you ❤
Genial maravillosa
Hermosísimo y muy profesional

To those who are saying this is too fast.
You were not there. You were not part of this.
Stop finding what's wrong and try to put yourself there in the moment without preconceived opinions on what it should sound like just because you heard someone else do it slower.
This is beautiful.
It is... too fast. What, you were there? It doesn't matter if you're there, it's still horrible.
This song was written to be used in church. Lacrimosa literally means mournful. If you play it this fast you clearly don't understand the meaning of the song or why it was written.
You may still like it, but don't expect everyone to like it just because "we weren't there". It is too fast compared to what is was meant to sound like.
@TwiceEvery14Days
You are missing the point.
You were not there, means that you were not Involved in the creative process. It doesn't mean that you have to be there in order to have an opinion. I understand that the original piece was slower. It was meant to convey an emotion that only a slow piece of music can convey. This is a facsimile of the original. It is not at the original speed intentionally. It is intentionally sped up in order to create a different emotion in the listener. To miss this is to miss the forest for the trees.
People are hung up on what they have heard before and are missing out on what is before them.
@@d.b.s.6381 your original comment was more ambiguous, but ok. As much as you like the "creative process" of speeding up a song, other people may just as much like the original version more. I like the original piece and the meaning it conveys. I don't like this sped up version because I can't find anything meaningful in it. I don't care if it was intentional, this (obviously) reminds me of the original piece, but the essence of it is lost in this version. This fast version has no special meaning to me and doesn't sound as beautiful as the original. I have no problem with you having a different opinion, but that doesn't mean everyone should have that same opinion. You like it, others don't.
@@TwiceEvery14Days
I respect your opinion.
You make a good point.
It's a point I would make if the roles were reversed.
Some people will not accept this work.
Some will not find it as beautiful as I do.
That's beautiful in itself.
Your opinion is just another avenue of beauty.
Please provide a link to a version of this piece that you find just as beautiful.
I will listen and hear with an open heart.
I was in district chorus for high schoolers last week, and we performed this song. I can confirm that it was both fun to learn and beautiful to hear on video. Hands down my favorite song I’ve learned in choir ☺ Especially because it was SATBB, which means all the harmonies are absolutely stunning 🤩
Genius work. Makes me cry when I listen to it.
Thanks!!
Espetacular 🙏
C'est magnifique Grandiose
Hermoso, lloré.

MUITO BONITA ❤
¡¡ Sencillamente sublime !!
heavenly!
I love the fugue! I will be listening to the rest of the Ostrzyga completion soon.
One of the greatest komponists ever near Bach, Händel, Mozart war ein Genie !
Maravillosa composicion
You know, I've only sung this once - in a mass choir to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers.
Fascinated by this version!
Nice😊
Astounding
