200mph Flat Out in My Ford GT!

- There is absolutely no discussion that the new Ford GT is fast, really very fast indeed! With some empty stretches of the de-restricted German Autobahn, and a supercar with a top speed in excess of 200mph, let's see what it's got! There's even a dedicated V-max mode for the purpose...
Ford introduced the new GT to race at the Circuit de la Sarthe, home of the 24hrs of Le Mans and a track that famously includes the Mulsanne straight with an importance on top speed. With an exceptionally heavy focus on the aerodynamics front, and despite it having a relatively small 3.5l twin turbo V6, the official top speed of the road going new Ford GT is 348km/h or 216mph.
To reach such speeds, it offers a number of different driving modes including a very specific V-max setting that to date I have never tested out. In this mode it takes the lower ride height of the Track setting, lowering down by 2 inches or 5cms onto the pushrod suspension setup, but in V-max it will keep the wing flat to the rear deck, significantly reducing drag at high speed but also decreasing the amount of stability for the rear end of the car.
Having taken my Ford GT to numerous race tracks including Silverstone, Nurburgring and Hockenheim, it's now time to see if it can join the 200mph club on a de-restricted section of the German Autobahn if conditions allow. With the Sport Cup 2 tyres inflated to the recommended 2.65bar pressures for high speed running and a number of driving modes to experiment with, a fascinating opportunity to learn about the car and its aerodynamics awaits.
In Sport mode, sitting at normal ride height and with the wing up, the car pushes on easily to 300km/h (186mph) but feels like there's not too much more to go beyond this. With the suspension lowered but wing still up it quickly gets to 324km/h (202mph) on the dash with the numbers continuing to climb. When in V-max mode fully, it clearly has more to give but conditions did not to discover where it might end up.
As with all cars, the dashboard has a built-in over read of the speed; this is a legal requirement that speedometers must never risk under reading and as such it is very normal that all cars will give a more optimistic readout. The use of a GPS based system will confirm an accurate speed, and an opportunity to see how far off it is on the car.
Things nearly went pear shaped thanks to one of the Ford GT's favourite habits - running out of fuel far too quickly! Thanks to having 656hp and a tiny fuel tank, the car needs to make frequent visits to fuel stations and this time around it came down to just 1km to empty...

Weaving between the two lanes is far more dangerous when you're going 200 mph, than just staying in the fast lane. No one is going to be coming up behind you when you're at that speed, even on the autobahn. Staying in the left lane is safest when doing a max speed run over 200 mph.

Tim, since you purchased this car, I have always stuck to my guns in saying that it is one of the most special cars in the world. This and now your SLS BS are both above reproach. For me, the Ford GT is as desirable as a Bugatti or Pagani. i’d have to disagree, the Ford GT has way too much clout and isn’t impressive whatsoever but definitely props to the owner for paying double the money of a McLaren 720S or 488 Pista when those are faster everywhere
@@zeezy21 It is not about the speed at all. Agreed, the Pista is a fine supercar but still does not have the pedigree, history, or looks for that matter. It's just another Ferrari. The 720s has the speed but ultimately is a pile of junk compared to the Ford. 720s is worth about 150 grand used if that. Ford GT can fetch over a million used there are many reasons for this and it has sod all to do with 'clout'. Oh and one more thing, how can you say that the Ford GT's performance figures from a V6 engine are unimpressive?
@@zeezy21 It's Ford. Them of all brands designing a supercar is the equivalent to your 90-year old grandfather drawing a picture for you to hang up on your fridge, you just cannot get mad. You're paying for a reliable supercar, something of which won't require service NEARLY as much as a Ferrari or Mclaren, and will be significantly less expensive to maintain
Doesn't matter if it hits 200 or not - even at a standstill the GT looks like it's moving at 200mph.
You've made your GT _so_ unique with all those touches. The paintjob was special in and of itself, but then the exhausts, the wheels, seats, paddles. Amazing car, Shmee.

Traveling at high speeds isn't scary but it definitely uses your energy. I've noticed many times after blasting down the autobahn for a long while that I'm drained when I stop for fuel, ect
I have hit 200Mph on the Autobahn many times and yes, it can be a bit nerve wrecking, you better give it 100% attention to everything you are doing and what might come up real fast.
The very first time my American wife experienced what that feels like, I though she was going to pass out, she was that nervous.

the car needs a very long straight to get to its claimed top speed but the tank is not big enougth to enable the car to reach it cause it'll be empty before !!

Alen Albanna yeah I’ve even driven 10km when my car said 0. I think though in a qualifying or race situation you want to have the lowest weight which means running the fuel pretty low so I bet the car is pretty accurate even at low levels.

Tim, this is your best video ever. Germany is the best place other than a track for a car TH-camr. There is a segment of the Autobahn in eastern Germany that was an airstrip. While in Germany I was told it is a favorite segment for high speed runs. Brilliant video!!!

That is about the coolest thing I've seen on YT. Always wanted to blast down the Autobahn in something insane like this. Just to see the road and countryside is incredible. The evil Fuhrer did something good after all and it may be the only thing - oh well the Panzers and the Messerschmits were great models to build as a kid. and what D.F.R.Eng.Ferry Porsche did with the 356 and 911 was amazing as well, but these roads are just breathtaking! I have to say, I wouldn't have in a million years thought that of all the cars in the world I would choose this car to be my unicorn. It is a absolute beautiful car. It's a piece of art! I love the technology that's been put into the car, I love the way it looks, handles, sounds, The way the dash is all laid out it just an absolutely perfect car. It does it all. Like I said this car is beautiful and in the car world it is the Mona Lisa of cars.

haha. 187 is my max on the bike (only when as safe as poss obviously), 174 (unlimited) in the e46 and 170 in the e92 comp (deffo limited). Would live to hit 200 but i drive an L200 pickup at the moment so guess i need a steep hill.
