  • A terminally-ill girl wants her ashes spread with her late mother. But her father wants a 'selfie' casket.
THE HEREAFTER is used with permission from Ryan Noufer. Learn more at / ryannoufer .
Olive is a young teenager with a terminal illness. Resigned to her life ending, she wants nothing more than her ashes to be spread with her mother's. But her father has different ideas: he wants his daughter to be buried in a new product, an expensive "selfie casket" that takes photos of the dead and posts them to their social media accounts from beyond the grave.
Olive is opposed to the idea, but is so drained from her illness that it is difficult for her to assert her will definitively. The casket's high price may be a formidable enough obstacle to keep her dad from following through with his plans. But when he gets the company that makes the casket involved, all bets are off.
Directed and written by Ryan Noufer, this riveting short balances two distinctive veins in its deft storytelling. There's a definite edge of satire in its portrayal of how social media and its imperatives have penetrated even the most taboo corners of human experience, imagining a world where nothing is truly sacred in terms of mass exposure. This aspect of the narrative is well-written and sharply imagined, injecting a dark, absurd humor into Olive's serious, sad situation and a sheen of uncanny brightness and gleam in the cinematography.
But the film doesn't lose sight of the more emotionally resonant family drama, where a terminally ill young woman must confront her dad's inability to accept reality, let go and allow her the last measure of peace she wishes for herself. Despite Olive's wishes, her dad refuses to listen to her wishes, persisting in his push for the selfie casket, an idea that's ghastly to Olive (and the audience.) But people around Olive have accepted it wholeheartedly, not even questioning the logic. This is a dystopian world where you can be an influencer, even after passing, and everyone accepts it. But Olive doesn't, and she must muster all her remaining life force to resist it.
Actor Cailyn Rice's delicate yet fiery performance is the emotional anchor of the story, with her growing disbelief and feelings of betrayal and emotional abandonment grounding us in the tragedy of a young woman dealing with a terminal illness. The deepest sadness of all is how alone she feels during this time, with her father refusing to even understand his daughter's perspective. Instead, actor Patrick Fabian portrays David as a dad who just doesn't accept what's happening. Not delusional, exactly, but stubbornly steadfast that this selfie casket will mitigate the loss of his daughter. As a result, Olive must take drastic measures to assert herself before it's too late.
As a result, the ending of THE HEREAFTER is extreme, memorable and shocking, much like the film itself. But it's also logical within the storytelling's commingling of satire and tragedy. It speaks to Olive's conviction, especially in a world where nothing is sacred, private or off-limits to the algorithms of content consumption. It is the ultimate act of resistance for Olive, and it is uncompromisingly on her own terms.

Burning alive is one of the most agonizing ways to die, every nerve in her body will be screaming for what feels like an eternity of dehumanizing agony. She only wanted to join her mother as ashes. Her father left her no choice but to suffer for the end she wanted.

Very effective film and conveys its message well. My only criticism is the cackling ghoul salespeople all through it. I think it would’ve made a more effective piece if they came across more seriously rather than seeing this as a lucrative joke. Still, very frightening and I don’t blame the daughter in the slightest for her choice.

    This is just too bizarre!
But some people have thought that my first wife was a bit bizarre. We met when she was nineteen, got married when she was twenty. Her twenty-first birthday was her first day in the Strong Memorial Hospital Cancer Center. By her twenty-second birthday we knew she only had a couple of months left. The day we were told, we sat surrounded by a few people from the hospital, and my wife suddenly told me she wanted to donate her body. Thinking of organ donations, I immediately said that her body would be useless since she was so riddled with cancer. After a pause, one of the Administrators said "While actually, being that we are a teaching hospital tied to the University of Rochester, her body would be the most precious gift she could leave behind." My thoughts wandered in bafflement 'til my wife looked me in the eyes and said "If even one student becomes a better doctor for having had my body to learn from, it will have made this whole ordeal worth it."
I finally collected my thoughts around highschool science classes and how we had dissected several species. I was repulsed for only a few moments, then suddenly overwhelmed by the sacrifice she was offering. Her body already ravaged with metastasized bumps in constant need of radiation, I knew that cremation would be her choice, and any further damage done by studying her body after she died would be relatively inconsequential. We both gave our consent and completed the paperwork.
The day she died her body was transported to the hospital. As promised, they had use of her body for about a year and a half, at which time I was able to pick up her ashes and we were able to have services, burying her in a space provided by her foster family that had raised her since she was three years old so that she could evermore rest in peace in their family plot at the cemetery.
If anyone reading this is ever interested in making similar arrangements, please contact your nearest University Medical Center. If they do not have such a program, they should be able to put you in contact with a university that does. Remember, "If even one student becomes a better doctor...".

Damn. Wasn't expecting that ending. 😮 Sad thing is, her contract would have to be honored since the gas and bed wouldn't burn her completely. She'd still be able to be displayed in the selfie coffin.
Great premise for a story, but pretty ridiculous in reality. I'm sure there'd be a niche market for it somewhere. Can't say I'd want to witness a body slowly decomposing in a coffin, especially someone I cared about. Not a fan of open casket funerals either. Better to have the memories of the deceased as they lived, than the painted corpse in the coffin.

Right? I think many people think that bodies that are preserved by embalming last forever. Boy, they surely DO NOT. The embalming is usually just for the viewing which generally happens within a week or two at the most. This was an interesting concept, more like a fairy tale or an allegory.

I had never seen open cascade until i came to canada. I think it's ridiculous and absurd. To empty the guts of a human being, put make up on him, have clothes etc and people walking by looking at the corpse. It was better if it was at least like old time and this happened only at the first hours of death. It's just another money making scheme from funeral parlors.

This is absolutely horrific. I took it as a more or less satirical view of the crassness and superficiality that plagues our world. How in the world can a father be so insensitive to his daughter's wishes? How can he pressure her so strongly when she is sick and dying? And the company reps were so awful, Sleazebag and Bird-Brain, as I thought of them.
Maybe a bit of respect for the terminally ill is in order. I'm not in tip-top shape myself, and when I told my son that I wanted to be cremated, he didn't even want to think about it. It's simply a prospect that we both will face as best we can. We won't make a clown show of it.

Ryan: This is an excellent film! So called “loved ones” should never ever cross a dying person’s last wish no matter how weak they’ve become. I see the terminally ill as a disadvantaged part of society who should be protected from exploitation and discrimination and neglect. Her father used her love as a tool to betray her; so, the situation that evolved was entirely preventable if he had honoured her last wishes. Again…excellent short film. ❤Diane, Vancouver, Canada. Obviously absolutely horrifying to watch, gave me Black Mirror vibes in the best/worst sense, because I'm not entirely sure that this will remain fictional.
Also interesting to see a take on the way some people turn their grief into the dying person's problem. Sometimes this happens, where it essentially becomes the sick person's responsibility to stay strong for their family members, especially when the dying person is a child, because the family can't handle it in an appropriate way. I'm glad that Olive got what she wanted in the end, the right to choose what happens to our remains is the last choice we get to make, and it should be honored.

Absolutely brilliant and extremely thought provoking. One thing that did stick in my mind though is feeling slightly sorry for her father, despite most of the comments berating him for the decision he made - admittedly he did come across as rather mercenary for seemingly wishing to cash in on his daughter's untimely death, however I can somewhat relate to what he said about wanting to hold onto a piece of her after she leaves this life, and it was clear that he was terrified to lose her and for every trace of her to disappear, as is often the case when you lose someone you love. Unfortunately when it comes to death and the grieving process, there is never an easy way of overcoming, and I love how this short attempts to address this dissonance. Bravo. ♥️ P.S. Loved seeing Patrick Fabian again!

Wow such an interesting and clever idea to explore. With really great cinematography and acting as well!

This may be the most sick and twisted drama that I've ever seen. Even Stephen King couldn't conjure up this from the depths of his depraved imagination.

Definitely seen many better short films here on Omeleto, and shared this channel with so many people, but this one isn't going to be one of them.

Definitely seen many better cases of criticism, where it's actually constructive instead of pointless complaining, but yours isn't one of them.

I would have done exactly the same so kudos to the girl, the only sane person in this sad story.
When you're dying and even have to deal with a father that's a freaking psychopath, that's the only thing you can do.
Great short that perfectly shows how sick our society has become.

I understand but I also understand the father he was being selfish but what so many people are missing is his pain and how selfish she's being yes the father went overboard with his persistence but so did she this is a film about selfishness in grief not just the father
