I had two interactions with MG dealerships about a year ago when I was looking for a test drive of one of these. The experience was so bad my wife wouldn’t even entertain the idea of test driving one in the end. I had to admit if their sales service was so poor I shuddered to think what their after sales service was going to be like. Maybe I was just unlucky but the vibe I got was ‘disinterested’. I've had my MG4 Essence 64 for just under a year now and have not regretted my decision at all. So cheap to run with charging at home from the 3 pin plug being the usual for me. A trip earlier this year I travelled over 2100 Km using "expensive" public charging cost $220 NZD. A similar trip in my Suzuki Swift a few years ago cost over $400 in petrol (nearly $600 at todays prices) The MG4 isn't the perfect EV, but a friend reckons it's as good and maybe better than his Tesla Model Y.
Official economy of a 07 Corolla is 7.4ltr/100km. U91 is $2.58 so that is19cents/km. I would have thought it would be a bit worse in hilly Wellington but 16 probably possible if careful. Of course EV should include RUC of ~ 8c/km on top of the charging costs.
Suzuki Swift 4.8ltr/100km @ $2.58 ltr for 2100km is only $260. RUC for EV for 2100km is $160 plus recording fee(s) ~$12. So for 2100km in NZ Suzuki Swift..$260 MG4 ...$392 (220+160+12) RUC and Fast chargers destroy the economics.
They're smart, ev's are just not ready for prime time. I wouldn't even consider one for at least 5 years, lousy range, lousy infrastructure, terrible resale. They do burn really nice though.

I think you’ll find that the right hand drive MG 4’s are actually assembled in Thailand as right hand drive. No conversion necessary. Thailand has for years been making the vast majority of utes/pickups for the Australian and NZ markets so they’re already well versed, ie at minimal extra cost, in making them compliant for our markets.
Interesting it is now late September and MG are discounting by around 25%. Only 2023 models that are probably minimum 12 months old. Must have quite a lot of stock that did not sell.
Plus 10 years / 250,000km warranty. For a city car it's a no brainer. But even if you live outside the city and you're doing 300km a day, then the 64kWh is going to save you a ton of money.
Here in NZ purchased my MG4 51 Excite exactly 1 yr ago. With rebate cost £19,300 or $37,750 AUD. But hey if they drop it $10k, I have an agreed insurance payout value of $45k. Say no more!
Careful they don't unilaterally drop the "agreed" value without any reference to you or notification and you only discover on renewal and when you question they give you the run around and jack up the premium. BTW how is the RUC working out in NZ? Do people pay it yearly or as you go?
Melville MG (WA) is offering MG4 51 Excite for $31k drive away and with the still existing $3.5k WA gov. rebate, the drive away price is something like $27.5k, but only until the end of September?? All that after I bought mine for $40k just a few weeks back. I was expecting EV prices to drop, but not by $9,000 and that will make a few customers very unhappy like previous Tesla buyers. My dealer John Hughes even increased the price to $41k!
EU have tariffs on Chinese EV, in order to protect ICE cars. Australia does not, as we do not have a car industry anymore. Our Gov stopped subsidizing the ICE car sectors more than a decade ago.
@@vanhocwong6689 These are the prices BEFORE the tariffs become effective. In some countries they try to conquer market segment, and squeeze out legacy manufacturers, by accepting huge negative margins. In other countries people have to pay “normal” prices.
Seems to me, the only way that ev's can be sold is when they are heavily discounted. All subsidised by taxpayers and the CCP. I suspect Karl Marx would approve. Ironic perhaps, considering he was German born and the German auto industry is closing factories and laying off workers. Up the workers!
The lower price is because they are “dealer demo” where the dealer has licensed the car and claimed the state rebate of $3,500. If you buy it new it is $31000 and you claim the state rebate.
Sam. Please tell me that you don’t think that dealer demo is the same thing as new. The prices quoted are for new 2024 vehicles with the full 10 years warranty. Those sales on car sales are secondhand and not new! The discounts will push down the price of dealer demo cars… it’ll be hard for them to sell at higher than a new 2024 model.
I think we have just hit that tipping point where EVs are going to be cheaper than ICE vehicles I paid about $10,000 more for my MG4 in January than I could buy one for today and it still seemed incredibly good value then
The MG4 51 Excite undercutting most ICE vehicles in its class is a strong move. With hatchbacks like the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30 in the low to mid $30k range, the value proposition of the MG4, especially considering its lower running costs, is undeniable. If MG can maintain pricing around the $30k mark even after the promotion, it'll keep pushing EVs into a competitive space that ICE vehicles will struggle to match. Well done, MG!
Not for a long time, I'll keep my ice car going until the wheels fall off. And when they eventually ban them I'll buy a new ice car and run it for 15-20 years more, you're talking 2050 or 2060 minimum.
@@antwnpowell there will gas/certainly diesel for the next 100 years. Because of weight issues diesel tractor trailers aren't going anywhere. @electricviking not quite. Former car dealer here. This happens for all makes regardless of how good a car this may be. It will have a corresponding impact on resale price and trade in valuations.
My cousin will be furious. He paid almost $50,000 for one a year or so ago. This is outrageous. No wonder people are avoiding these things? HEVs are outselling BEVs 2 to 1, in Australia this year. I'm pretty sure Sam does not mean his comment about returning an ICE car to be taken literally. I, for one, don't take anything he says literally. He is one eyed, in favor of ev's and anti ICE cars. But that's OK. He's made his choice and I've made mine.

Electric vehicles have obvious advantages in maintenance costs. This is mainly due to the simplified structural design. Electric vehicles do not have complex mechanical parts such as engines and gearboxes, so there is no need to replace conventional consumables such as engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, etc. the maintenance process of electric vehicles is relatively simplified, mainly focusing on circuit inspection, screw tightening, and replacement of wearing parts such as brake pads, air conditioning filters and tires.
Unfortunately no chance for such prices in EU. MG is going to have the higest level of tarifs 37.6% on top of current 10% in EU so no chances for price cuts in the near future.
@@kolo22551 The tariffs for MG EVs have been slightly reduced (though this won’t necessarily be the final ones). Plus, MG also makes some cars with an internal combustion engine (which are not affected by the tariffs), so it will be possible for MG to launch to the Bulgarian and Baltic markets.
And 0-100 is a metric that can be done anywhere, you can't exactly list 'lap times' for all cars, which one track in the world are they going to be using? If a hatch doesn't turn very well it's not a hot hatch.
I would be even more concerned about buying this car. Why the drastic price reduction? Is it a fire sale? Are they going out of business? Are they making any money on it? Is this like a Fisker Ocean firesale? I keep my cars a long time. I want to make sure it will be supported.
Whole bunch of new EV models and brands coming to Australia soon. MG obviously have too much stock. If they don't get rid of them soon they will be left with them depreciating in their yards.
Why would anyone want a vehicle that has more supply than demand , made in China and all the limitations of an EV ? When you factor in the coming depreciation , the total cost of ownership will be much higher than a Toyota Corolla ,a Mazda3 ,,internal combustion car , which have proven strong resale values.
Clearly they are not selling in sufficient volumes. If these types of prices become normal legacy auto in Australia is about to get hurt unless they drop their prices.
Toyota have positioned themselves as premium price segment, but no longer getting value for money, they are relying on their reputation from years gone by. I rejoice at the prospect of cheaper car prices.
Its too late for legacy auto - chinese EVs are too high of quality and too cheap - they wont keep up over the next 2 decades because the race started 2 decades ago.
Can't Americans go to Mexico, buy it, and drive home? I suppose there's legal BS? For a while car dealerships in northern France sold "British" cars, because it was cheaper for Brits to buy them there and import them!

This kind of discounting will kill EV’s. People who paid full price will be absolutely stuffed with this. Same as Tesla’s. The Chinese manufacturers will take over the Australian market and we’ll be left with no choice.
MG , please start selling these in Japan. Cars like this will encourage Japanese to start buying EVs and force Toyota etc to ramp up production of EVs 😂
Turns out, today ( Sunday the 22nd September) there is only one in WA for that 27.000 price and has 1.500 kms. But there are a lot at the 30.990....which is a drop of 10.000.....ouch for anyone that bought it a month ago... Again, only till the end of October!
Just wait until the US puts its boot heels to Australia as it has done in North America and is doing to Europe. You won't be gloating about cheap Ev's and solar when prices double.
Nobody should be surprise these ev are getting cheaper to built a lot less input then say a ice car the labor along save these ev car companies a ton of money.
My question is, why are MG dropping prices if they could sell it at the higher price? Clearly people are not buying them. I think the anti-EV FUD has escalated to the point that the only way anyone will consider buying an EV is if the price is slashed. What just happened in Lebanon has also highlighted that lithium batteries are highly explosive in certain circumstances, and maybe that has put people off somewhat as well. Whatever the case, lower EV prices are a good thing, and hopefully a lot of people are going to get themselves a nice brand new EV that will cost less to buy and even less to run. Good on you, MG, and I'm sure they are just clearing out their showrooms before the competition arrives in the next few months. PS I wonder if the drive away price has factored in the state EV rebate, hence the difference between what the media says and what Viking is saying?

The experience was so bad my wife wouldn’t even entertain the idea of test driving one in the end. I had to admit if their sales service was so poor I shuddered to think what their after sales service was going to be like. Maybe I was just unlucky but the vibe I got was ‘disinterested’. I don’t know if the commission is really low or they just expected that these cars would just sell themselves but either way it put us off the brand at any price.
@robsengahay5614 I call 100% BS on your comment, probably a paid one from the $1.6 billion anti-china fund from the USA state department

I've had my MG4 Essence 64 for just under a year now and have not regretted my decision at all. So cheap to run with charging at home from the 3 pin plug being the usual for me. A trip earlier this year I travelled over 2100 Km using "expensive" public charging cost $220 NZD. A similar trip in my Suzuki Swift a few years ago cost over $400 in petrol (nearly $600 at todays prices)
The MG4 isn't the perfect EV, but a friend reckons it's as good and maybe better than his Tesla Model Y.
I'm calling bs buddy.
I was recently driving my 07 corolla around Wellington for around 16c/km average.
This sounds like it,s a real "working " car for the average Joe Soap.
So for 2100km in NZ
Suzuki Swift..$260
MG4 ...$392 (220+160+12)
RUC and Fast chargers destroy the economics.
I used 7.0l/100km and paid average $2.3/ltr between 28/8/24 and 8/9/24.
Such good price, and with wide selection of EVs in Australia, the EV adoption rate is still around or under 10%? What's wrong with people?
They're smart, ev's are just not ready for prime time. I wouldn't even consider one for at least 5 years, lousy range, lousy infrastructure, terrible resale. They do burn really nice though.
@@chris-t-4569 Predicting depreciation is like predicting stock prices. In 5 years, your ICE car could also depreciate even worse than EVs if society becomes more acceptable to EVs, and during this time, you also burned a lot of fuel money.

The reason for this pricing I guess is handing out MY23 models before MY24 release (allready available in continental EU)
Amazng value! Good for couples or a single person, however too small for families....
Interesting it is now late September and MG are discounting by around 25%. Only 2023 models that are probably minimum 12 months old. Must have quite a lot of stock that did not sell.
That’s cos demand is low, hybrids rule
Plus 10 years / 250,000km warranty. For a city car it's a no brainer. But even if you live outside the city and you're doing 300km a day, then the 64kWh is going to save you a ton of money.
They are only discounting them because there is an oversupply and have to make space for next years models.
Not a bad reduction in price.
Even at 30k Aussie dollaroos it's still great. They are €27k starting price here in Ireland. Hopefully they will drop them some more here soon.

Long range version is €41935
Basic version is €32935

EU have tariffs on Chinese EV, in order to protect ICE cars. Australia does not, as we do not have a car industry anymore. Our Gov stopped subsidizing the ICE car sectors more than a decade ago.
@@vanhocwong6689 These are the prices BEFORE the tariffs become effective.
In some countries they try to conquer market segment, and squeeze out legacy manufacturers, by accepting huge negative margins.
In other countries people have to pay “normal” prices.
If you buy new in WA at $31k then you can also claim the $3500 rebate so $27.5k. Think QLD has a rebate scheme too, not sure about other states
I drove one a brilliant car apart from a scary lane assist. Designed in London, apparently.
I think we have just hit that tipping point where EVs are going to be cheaper than ICE vehicles
I paid about $10,000 more for my MG4 in January than I could buy one for today and it still seemed incredibly good value then
$10k gone!!
Your equated prices are incorrect. On car sales, the cheapest in South Australia is $31k. There are demos at $27k in WA.
yes cheapest 77 I can find is $46k not $41k
I love my Xpower. ❤❤ unlimited warranty.
ICE is dead - 16000€ wow.
Not for a long time, I'll keep my ice car going until the wheels fall off. And when they eventually ban them I'll buy a new ice car and run it for 15-20 years more, you're talking 2050 or 2060 minimum.

It was not the batteries exploding, they hid tiny bombs inside the devices.
