Wing Mario over the rainbow is a small course above the clouds in the Super Mario world! Collect all the red coins on the different clouds and cannon islands using the Wing Cap!

Finishing up getting all 120 for the first time and this game’s dogshit camera and controls really made me appreciate how great Mario Odyssey is in all aspects. 64 is still hella tight tho lol
Honestly same, I’m glad I finally played 64. I didn’t enjoy it but it made me really appreciate and enjoy Odyssey anymore.

The camera and triple jump piss me off

The amount of fist-pumping I did by only just now beating this level is indescribable. Like the Angry Video Game Nerd after a really hard game. It's taken me a good 24 years to finally get around to getting all 120 stars. And so naturally the last two were the two insufferable wing cap Castle Secret Stars stages. This being the very last star to collect. Yeah....I fell all the way back to Earth a lot.
This was, without doubt, the most frustrating part of the game for me. Yes, you don't lose any lives, but having to swim OUT OF THE FUCKING MOAT AND THEN RUN ALL THE BLOODY WAY BACK UP TO THE TOP OF THE CASTLE FOR THE FIFTIETH FLAMING TIME IF YOU FAIL was just intolerable at times. This was one star for some reason that I just lost my patience with twenty five years ago and NEVER managed to get once.
I've just last week got an N64 again and am at 117 stars after three days play, but still need the vid to help here, cos I'm struggling again and the memories are flooding back! I STILL CANNOT EFFING DO IT! I'm determined at 39 to finally get 120 stars which I never managed back in my youth. At least I beat my record of 115...
Still got the 100 coin stars for the final two courses left as well. Oh dear...
@@Atrus233 I actually didn't find the wing cap star itself that bad, but this was just indescribable in terms of frustration. I mean, I've blasted through the game faster than I ever expected after not playing for years and years, but there's some things I guess you are destined to never do, and maybe this is one of them.
I'm at about my 25th attempt so far and still only got 7 of the red coins.
And now I finally understand what you're talking about! After all my ranting here I watched the video and then got it on my first attempt (OK I'd made about 25 attempts before watching the vid!), and just gone completely mental in my living room with joy...
OK then, only the two hundred coin stars on Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride to do and I've got them all for the first time ever! Now this'll be frustrating....

-boots you back to the hubworld forcing a long trip back upon failure

Yep, this is Mario 64’s version of Sunshine’s floating leaf level
Atleast Sunshine doesn't boot you back to the hub world except when you get a game over, so stock up on lives to save yourself from doing the two minute wonky hitbox boat trip. Atleast the leaf room can be cheesed, but it's still hard.

Let’s be real, this star wouldn’t be that bad if that one red coin inside the clear cloud, every time I finally touched it the camera would go wild and I’d get lost and struggle to find a landing

My brother discovered this level and refused to tell me where it was.
He was a bit of a jerk when we were younger.
Anyway, I would ask him from time to time to let me play this board because the music, sky, and the feeling of flying felt so good.

As far as I remember, this is the only Secret Course where Cannons are used.

The red coin under the lower hanging vine was above that cloud. Same cloud as the 5th one collected in the video for me.

Yeah this one is different from mine because on mine the 2 coins are on the same cloud together.

FINALLY I GOT THIS GODDAMN STAR! It took buying 3D All-Stars, playing it for a while, leaving it for a few months, coming back to it, leaving it again, and coming back to it once more before I got it.
SAME! This star is a pain in the ass.
It only took me three or four tries to complete this level and I manage to finally finish it! :) thank you!

But seriously, he could have played the game back then easily. Literally any phone or tablet or computer or laptop could emulate it back then, and good Bluetooth controllers to play the game with on these devices are cheap.

matthatter56 I agree about the 100 coin star in the clock, but I found pyramid puzzle much easier than this one. If you miss the three platforms at the top you just have to climb back up to the top. If you fall in this level, you get kicked out of the castle and have to go back in and make your way all the way back up to the level.

Me personally I was stuck on Pyramid Puzzle for over an hour (likely an hour and half or more). I already have poor depth perception IRL and the camera in Pyramid Puzzle doesn't help at all. So yeah well over an hour of falling climbing falling climbing.
This star however (watching this guide) took me only a few tries. 10 to 20 minutes max.
Again these unique experiences gaming such an awesome medium.

This manages to be more frustrating than the entirely of Special Zone in Super Mario World.
Also this copy seems to have moved the position of one of the red coins. In the OG cart I have from the 90s, there's only one coin below the highest cloud with the green poles, and two on top of the cloud instead of one.

i like the vibe of this one more than the rainbow ride this one has a more mario 64 feel to it and the other one had more of a zelda 64 feel to it cause that one had more zelda 64 like textures a flying medieval ship and some kind of medieval interior too(in the house)this one also has the wing cap mario 64 music which fits the sky more than the slider theme
I remember seeing a clip of this video in a top 10 (0:25 - 0:31 specifically). I had never even heard of Mario 64 before watching it.
I tried to beat this to no avail. Never got to meet Yoshi. This and that underwater maze broke me.

The wings have worser controls than the planes in gta San Andreas
If this level was in Banjo-Kazooie or Spyro then it would a piece of cake because both the bear and dragon's flying power ups don't control like a drunken airplane

I played a bit of mario 64 as a kid early 2000, since i liked playstation more than nintendo back then and i dont remember the controllers camera and mechanics being thaaat clunky, i found it weird that the camera was awful most of the times but flawless on level/area 15 rainbow course. (been playing 3d collection) the wingcap is an amazing addition but the inconsistency made the levels frustrating (which is why im here on the wingcap video commenting) sometimes when you want mario to fly slowly to reach a area within a level safely, he just gets a boost out of nowhere and either you miss the platorm or land too fast that mario cant stop the at once the momentum when he lands that he ends up falling on the pit. Or when you dive to get momentum to reach a high platform while flying he doesnt get it, ruining all speed you had and makes reaching even the lowest platform impossible to get to, and probably youll end up falling onto the pit. Lol and one gets so salty.
The worst Star in Mario 64 by far. The Wing Cap is the worst aspect of this game and this is its crowning achievement of awfulness. You can barely see let alone control where you're going. And the worst part is how the game kicks you out of the castle every time.
And the fact you need to do the stupid triple jump to start flying is the cherry on top

Worst power up in the game. It's not flying, it's falling with style.
Best power up metal cap it has the best theme
I play this level super fucking carefully. I get a flight cap, look around for the nearest red coin, and fly/blast my way there and repeat. It takes forever, but it's a very stressful level. Sure it takes 10 minutes, maybe longer depending on how paranoid I am being, but I find it has a 95% success rate depending on how risky I am with ground pounding the next cloud. And the thing is, this isn't a very threatening level. The main annoyance factor is the harsh punishment for falling... but you don't lose a life at the very least. And yet, its the hardest level in the game and not really all that hard... just harrowing and annoying.

Strangely, 1 of my red coins was in a different location. You had 2 hanging from the vines where I only had one, but a second one on top of the same cloud.

True. I am playing through it again on the Switch., and the camera is the shits and controls are too twitchy.. But, imagine if you were a kid in the 90s and only have played the 2D Marios. Then you play this game that let you explore a big world with secrets everywhere... It was AMZING for its time. .

Corona Melon Indeed and it was pretty hard back then. But that’s no excuse to not make proper controls and camera work for 3D All Stars. They even refined and retuned the games on the first All Stars. So keeping these controls and camera angles after 20 years is a sorry excuse

At least they made this a bit easier in the 3D All-Stars version: they put one of the vine dangling coins on the cloud on top of it.
It's like that in my N64 cart version from the 90s too. (Just beat is a minute ago.) I have no idea what version this video is from.
I just completed it on my n64 version with only one vine coin.
If you guys think that this level is hard on the N64 console then try this level again on the Switch Online Expansion Pack because the camera drifts up as your using your wingcap!!!!!

I literally just completed this! It took me a few tries but I completed it. All you have to do is follow the rainbow and use the cannons wisely. Pretty easy level honestly.

I still wonder how I managed to pass this level. It is a difficult level.
I did this first try. Yeah it’s a hard star, definitely one of the hardest but I wouldn’t call it THE hardest. Stuff like snowmans land 100 coins feels leagues ahead more difficult.
I disagree, getting 100 coins on snowman's land is easier. I've got it after a few tries but I can't get this star. The flying mechanic is bad.
This is the only star from the castle's secret stars that I can't get. I have 14 of the 15 castle secret stars.

How do you triple jump in place like that? I can double jump in place, but Mario doesn't do the third jump unless I move forward.
The third jump at a standstill only happens when you're wearing the Wing Cap

Honestly really overrated in terms of how difficult it is. If it didn't put you outside of the castle whenever you mess up, nobody would be complaining about this mission. Yeah it's a little tedious but as long as you aren't overly reckless and do it carefully, it's not hard at all. There are WAY more difficult stars than this, the hardest would have to be rainbow cruise 100 coins.
100 coins in rainbow ride and blast to the lonely mushroom (without using the flower guy method) are the worst stars in the game.
the camera in this game is what keeps me from enjoying it. Its horrible

Tried doing this star on 3D all stars. But controls av inverted for both sticks and i can't get the camera to work with me. Only star i need to get 120 stars for my first time ever. Good video though.

This was my 89th star that I got just now. Good lord, I kept falling back into the castle grounds and the rage was growing. I finally got it on what I think was my 7th try. Never before have I experienced such BS falling in a game such as Super Mario 64. Even though that happens, this game is still hella fun lol

Jesus this took me like 45 minutes just to get the stupid thing. this is by far one of the worst stars in the game. this and of course anything from shifting sand lands and lava land. especially shifting sand Land. I'll play this level 120 more times then play one more shifting sand land star.
