I was suffering from pains in my left and middle part of my chest 5 weeks sgo, my friend past away from a heart attack just 3 weeks ago. I was suffering from a lot of pain along with alot of Anxiety and panic attacks, then was diagnosed with costochondritis, was not sleeping for few days. Was Suicidal at times as just wanted it to go away. If you are reading this, it has been 2 months and I feel 80% better. You can get through this. You have to mentally be strong, only you can do this. Harder then said, but you are in control.

This brought tears to my eyes. I used a softball, wrapped up in a towel and I almost passed out. My chest is sooo tense and inflamed... I pushed through. I didn't do much, just laid there, but it felt like I was lifting a 1000 lbs. After a few min of laying there I loosened up and started to move the arm of the rib that hurt. POP!! The tears of pain turned into tears of joy as I inhaled for the first time in years without feeling a stabbing pain in my chest. I work in software and sit at my desk all day/ all night. I get up and stay active, but I hurt. A lot. It's getting to the point where I spend more time doing pain management than software development. I've done this same movement before, but with different intentions. Thank you for taking the time to walk us through. I'm so ready to heal and begin to enjoy life again. This last year, my central nervous system has been overloaded with pain and I'm grumpy/angry all the time, then I fall asleep. I want to get back to life again. I'm only 28. Thanks again
EDIT: you can even notice in the picture as my Avatar, I'm slanted due to that being out of place. Best of health to you and your loved ones, Sir.

Grant, I woke up at 3:30a this morning with the worst stabbing pain in my rib; I couldn't take a decent breath, and crawled out of bed. I started searching for ANYTHING and came across this video. I grabbed a tennis ball and did this technique for about 15 minutes. I got a lot of movement and I was able to deep breathe and the pain was gone. I'm checking in with my chiro again later this week but I had to thank you for putting this out there. Good video. I would recommend putting the lacrosse (or other ball) in a knee high sock then hold onto the top of the sock and sling it over your shoulder. Find a spot and lean against the wall and move up and down the area for a nice massage. Find another area on the other side of the spine. You can either do a trigger pt release or massage with this technique.

This is great video form this young Man. Costo is more pronounced than most people realize. Poor Postural habits is a big contributor. But also you should check out a few more things: Your Thoracic Spine ( I have T9 & T10 disc bulges and thinning discs) & Dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees. Scoliosis is counted short by many doctors ( a Mt. Sinai Spinal Surgeon who I consulted confirmed that in Spades. The twistyed and curves spine definitely affects the nerves flowing through the spine at every level). A few years ago, after feeling particularly Bloated for days and some right side rib pain, I went to Urgent Cae. After the Sonogram, they told me that I had a number of Mobile Gall stones in the Gallbladder. fter going to my Doctor - I was advixed that the Gallbaldder should be removed. My GI dr confirmed that and told me that you would be a risk of a stone getting trapped in the Bile Duct. I had the surgery - removed my gallbladder. I asked the surgeon: How was it? . He said thare were a Few stones, No Sludge, and No Inflammation!! What? Was it removed Unnecessarily? He wouldn't admit that - but after the surgery healed (done with minimally Invasive means), I still had the Rib Pain!! When the Costo erupts - it affects my Diaphragm and Beathing difficulties are a result. Note that I have numerous spinal issues including Facet Joint arthritis, and both Cervical and Lumbar Instabilities od Stenosis and disc bulges with OA on vertebrae. Cervical Instabilities are a Significant Contributor to Maladies that erupt in your well being. Tinnitus, Chronic Sinusitis, ear pain, Temporal headaches, TMJ issues that flow into the Chest Wall, even IBS / GERD as well Bladder and/or Bowel Incontinence. Major Nerves - The Vagus Nerves run from the Brain Stem through the first 2 Cervical discs (Atlas and Axis) and then meander through connecting all the vital Organs to the Parasympathetic Nervous system. I'm no Doctor. You don't a medical Degree yo do your own research about your Body and bodily functions. I'm 71 YO and suffer from spinal issues for many years that have affected my well being.

Pain is essentially our brain's interpretation of threat, and something like the vaccine logically shouldn't cause something like costo, but it can elevate some symptoms that may have been on the verge of coming on, but hadn't quite reached that threshold yet. If that makes any sense at all?

It’s like an ache or pressure not severe stabbing pain but wears you down after a while. Basic heart tests check out as fine. I also started playing tennis in VR two months ago so there was a fair amount of twisting which I’m taking a break from to see if it settles down. I tried lymph massage from a therapist but the last visit made the pressure worse and gave me some nausea.

Thank you so much for this video which i just came about by chance. I never heard of costochonditis before but when you described it I thought, that's what I'm experiencing. I've been to the doctor several times and got a comprehensive check up, x-rays, ECG, among other tests and then told there's nothing wrong but still did not get much relief from this rib pain. It would die down on it's own then flare up a couple months later. I followed your recommendations in the video daily and within a week I'm finally feeling a huge change. I'll continue researching this condition and finding ways to prevent it from returning❤

I've suffered with chronic costochondritis since August of 2013. I've seen 3 physical therapists, 2 doctors at my family practice, an orthopedic doctor, 2 different pain management facilities & that has amounted to approximately 8 providers between the 2 facilities, and no body has been able to help the debilitating bouts of pain that I get when I have a flare up. A flare usually lasts from several days to several weeks & I struggle to breathe, move, walk & just do daily activities like sit, stand, get in/out of the tub, sit on toilet, get up from the toilet, life can be hell during the flares. I will try your suggestions tomorrow, as I am currently having a very bad flare right now, which is why I found your video. It's similar to the 2 PT doctors that do physical therapy posts, and they did a video 5 years ago suggesting similar techniques. They just were not as in depth with their explanations, for us layman's, so to speak...as you are. 😁🤣😂 Thank you for your post.

Man! Thank you so much!!!! 🙏🙏❤️This is crazy! So I fell at MMA training, on my shoulder, and I felt a snap or pain in my left shoulder and left rib under the nipple/chest. I work in a office, sittning badly in front of the desk for 10+ years. Also havent been training MMA for 13 years, I got a scan at the ER, they found nothing at all, no advice and some pain pills. I just gave this a try having pain for a week, man this worked in a mattet of seconds. I can take deep breaths, still have some pain, but I feel the difference! 😮Amazing!!!!! I used a tennis ball on my left scalpula muscles, they where stiff at first and then the got a bit relaxas, and my breath and pain in the chest got better and better. Just after a few minutes!

I've had Costo on and off for over two decades. Usually the pain isn't terrible or constant, but it's there, like a malevolent friend. I only went once to a Dr. about it. Though he was a quality Dr. in other ways, he simply ordered an X-ray, saw nothing ominous, declared it Costochondritis and said "we don't know what causes it. Good luck.'" I often attibuted it to a stress response, but for some ignorant reason I never thought of connecting it to my near constant issue of tight, sore traps, stiff neck, and poor posture. Recently, I've had much less stress but the Costo seemed worse and didn't respond much to my go to strategy of ice, heat, or aceptaminophen. I finally (and very recently) started explorting on YT and found Grant's wonderful videos. Thank you so much for bringing light to this issue. I am certain now that for me, it's global, not local. I am one of the 50% whose pain is parallel to the front. My traps are a mess, and indeed the tennis ball is torture on the traps (in a good way!) I can only do 5 minutes at a time, twice a day. I know from the past if I force myself to continue the agony for 20 minutes I will burn out and stop. I am not planning on stopping this until my Costo is in the rear view mirror. I finally have hope this can be conquered and I continue to work on proper posture to maintain the gains. Thank you, Grant.

Keep up the good work TDub! Whatever strategy you can sustain is a good one. Stress is always an interesting sidebar to costo. Hi Grant. May I ask about "stretching to the end of the range" during the Costo tennis ball exercise? That really "gets" it as in misery. I've only been working the left side as that's where most of the tighness usually resides. When I strech with the left arm behind me or to the left or right, it's very painful. No pain, no gain, right? If I stretch with my right arm, it doesn't hurt much. So, should I keep moving the ball around the left side , breathing deeply and attempting to push to the end of my range? Is it necessary to do much work on the non affected side? Thanks--TDub

    • @YourWellnessNerd
      @YourWellnessNerd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey mate! Everyone is a little different, but you've got the gist of it. The idea with the exercise is to find those restricted areas. One side is often more affected but there may also be a few subtle ones on the other side. As long as someone looks for the restriction while still respecting where it hurts (they can be opposite sides) thats when the exercise is most helpful. Moving the arms around is just a way of ramping up the effectiveness of the exercise again! I always say you only go as hard as you feel comfy tolerating

Had this for nearly 2 years on and off.
I decided to look at it holistically this time and noticed that it begins on my left side under my chest but always seems to leave (after a week of doing nothing) with a pain in my back.
The reason i messaged you was because i bought a TENS machine and found that by putting the 4 pads on different places on my back, in seconds one of the pads pinpointed me to where the actually damage was.
Just thought this trick may help you speed up the treatment with your patients.

@@azizlebeau619 Hi there. Any tens machine will be fine, just use it where the pain is but also then move on to the ribs on your back.
At some point one of the pads will land on a point that will feel slightly different (in my case under my left shoulder blade on my back). The sensation isn't pleasant, it feels like a dull ache.
The key to all of this is just stopping what you are doing for at least 3 weeks and trying to work out what is the major contributor to causing it to recur.
In my case it was the seat in my car and the routine i had got into in Lock-down of lazing around on my bed in the evenings in a slouched position.
I know how scary it feels, at it's worst i genuinely thought i had a serious internal organ problem but the nerves in that area are all linked so you have to let the whole torso heal.
Please, believe me, it is worth it. Your health has no price, try to get time off work if possible and just stop everything, it will go, you will feel it changing after 2 weeks and by a month you will just feel it slightly in the background so go easy.
After a month i was back riding my bike big miles again and now 3 months it is 95% fixed. I know that an injury while building my house was the route of the problem (something went pop) but my car seast was what was causing it to keep returning.
Please try, i would love to think that i could gain something from that horrible experience and helping somebody would be a great reward.
      Look after yourself, John

I got costochondritis from holding a heavy load out in front of me with my elbow straight for too long and strained this area. A PT folded a hand towel and put it on one side of my sternum and pushed down gently for a couple seconds and repeated several times. It moved this joint and helped the stiffness in my thoracic spine at the same time. It was very tender but took care of the problem quickly. The pain creeps back in if I strain this area again but I get someone to mobilize my ribs in front again and it resolves. Thank you for reminding me how important good posture is…I know I’m pretty hypermobile and don’t stand or sit up straight like I should.

    Oh wow
I might have just found the answer to my mystery complaint. I think it might be caused by breastfeeding through the night in sometimes awkward positions, although I try to minimise discomfort. My doctor wouldn't even see me because I said the dreaded words "chest pains" and I was advised the emergency service wouldnt want see me either, unless I was having symptoms at the time. The symptoms have been occasional and fleeting but worrying, so it was unlikely I would have symptoms by the time I had got to hospital and waited hours to be seen. So I've just been in limbo.not knowing what to do. It has been troubling me all day today though lower on my ribs. Then when I thought it had gone it changed sides! And was really painful. I have googled in the past bit just got a list of possibilities and nothing jumped out at me. It just occurred me to search on youtube. Hallelujah! This jumps out at me. Thank you so much for providing this info.and advice. I will eventually trick the doctor into seeing me hopefully. I've just been invited for a routine check up. I will call it rib pain this time. I feel so much more hope seeing this and knowing there are things that might help me and professionals other than doctors that could help me too. Thank you thank you thank you.

I’ve had to sleep sitting up but neck positioned not so straight, especially as during sleep I end up sliding down. I have had to wait for the healthcare system to even accept me and now WOW! Very good video - I've been twice to the ER in the last 3 months thinking the consistent chest pain I was getting was a heart issue - but both times all the tests for my heart came back fine. The doctor advised it's a most likely a muscular skeletal issue but did not diagnose me officially with costo - but watching this video and getting an idea of other people suffering from this horrible thing (it literally feels like a heart attack when the symptoms come on - stretching has definitely helped but I will definitely be trying this exercise) - anything for pain relief as I have had this for almost 6 months steady. I'm not weight training anymore and almost completely stopped drumming because any physical exercise aggravates the area. Do not wish this condition on anyone - it can be very painful at times. Wow. Years ago started getting these knots in my shoulder blade. I put this wooden knob in the basement and periodically would go down there and jam it into my blades to eventually free up the tension. Recently I've developed this itch in my shoulder blade and one page suggested this was nerve related (pinched?) with no solution. So, I've been over the past couple weeks down there doing same jamming this thing into my shoulder area hoping to stop the itch. Yesterday, on one of my light jogs, the ribs on my right side felt like they were tearing apart each time my foot hit the ground. Excruciating pain. I tightened up every core muscle I had and was able to continue, but feel like there's some swelling and definite pain still in that area. All this to say your ball and my wooden knob I think are on to something. Hopefully using your info I'll be able to make some improvements. Thanks

@@YourWellnessNerd Crazy thought - given I was already just recently doing some intense pressure into this area on my upper back what are the chances that led to a newly developed issue on my front rib cage? Sort of one issue's cure is a different issue's beginning?

Thank you so much! I've had issues for years with this but a few months ago fell on ice, catching myself on a railing with my right arm. It took about 4 days for the flare up and all the pain occurred on the left side. Because I knew I tore the right side I was mistakenly trying to fix the side I knew I injured, only making it worse. When I feel my front rib cage, the right side (the side I injured) is definitely sticking further out by my sternum... I obviously needed to push the left side of my back forward with the ball but wasn't putting 2 and 2 together. 🤦‍♀️🙏 I can physically feel my front rib cage lining up more already. Ps this was after an awkward hospital visit to rule out other heart conditions... Apparently where the pain is radiating makes it more difficult to find the source sometimes 😣the last thing I want to say is, the massage has helped and the popping of the chest that feels soooo tempting, was definitely making more pain for me.

Due to coronavirus our general practitioners here in U.K. are not seeing patients face to face so all I’ve had is two triage telephone conversations, so no physical examination, and his diagnosis on the phone with multiple prescription medications. Thank you, that is a thing that really helps, I found another every day. I do pec stretch, Tai Chi (from the Channel "Begin with breath Tai Chi", he is a physical therapist) and Animal Flow every morning (last one is very demanding and sometimes painful but I think will help my back long term). I thought of heart issues and becaue of hurting little bumps around my ribs of breast cancer, sooooo much fear and struggle but it is all because of the long term harmful positions I spent my days for years.

I had shingles rash which appears under my breast area and although I have received Shingrix the rash periodically returns. Stress. I have been dealing with the pain in my sternum and ribcage for years which I attribute to soreness from the shingles in that area. Now I am having back ribcage pain. The stretches have helped. I realize I need an hour of daily stretching to feel better. Funny how no matter how much I stretch, I did not think that same stretching in that area was just as important.

Hope you’re well! The thing to consider with EDS is that it’s usually a whole body laxity and does require something to pick on to generate pain or injury. In short the concepts in this video are still the same it’s just those with EDS may need to hyper vigilant compared to others without it!

I’ve taken careful consideration of the cause of this condition that’s bothered me since March of this year. I had serious back spasms in February…I spent a month holding in my upper stomach muscles whenever I moved the wrong way to hold the spasms at bay. I believe I just overused my ribs, upper stomach muscles, tendons in that area…etc. and this is my healthy 63 year old body counteracting that holding and overuse of my abdominal muscles and tendons around my ribs
