  • Thanks to 3D Resin printers, 40mm miniatures are packed with great detail. But can they be cast in bronze? I took my Phrozen Sonic 4K, printed a mini by Archvillain Games using Bluecast X10 Castable Resin, and gave it a go.
    I also took a look at build plate adhesion problems and suggested my own technique of using a printable prime coat.
    Enjoy! 😁

    Your prime coat idea is simply genius and I'm a little surprised no one has done it before. I suppose having a full build plate kind of qualifies, but you definitely get credit in my book.

    It is amazing what you can do with a 3D printer and castable resin but don’t forget about the two furnaces and vacuum chamber also. I’ve got a Mars pro and am currently saving up for two furnaces and a chamber. Your videos have been great help in my research and I’m sure that when I get my hands on all the required equipment they will be helpful in the experimentation process as well! Thank you!!!

    I do the same thing as your prime coat, I have a file I just drop in and center that's the size of the plate, and 0.15mm thick(3 layers). I will sometimes change it's size in Chitubox if I am doing a small project, to somewhere around double the main objects footprint. Works like a charm. I've found no need to increase my base cure time though.

    I love how informative your videos are, thank you so much producing such high quality content. I am a sculpture and jewelry teacher in the US at the high school level. I am looking into including 3d printing into my jewelry program. I really like the Elegoo Mars Pro 2. In your opinion - should I start off with one printer and see how it handles the work load of my students or should I just buy two off the bat? I imagine that you can print several pieces of jewelry at a time (5,10, 15)?
    Also, what do you recommend is the best casting resin?
    Finally, do the freshly printed pieces require washing and curing like normal printing resin? I am also thing of purchasing the Elegoo Mercury Plus 2 in 1 wash and curing machine as well.
    I know these are a lot of questions. I will understand if you can't answer them all. Either way, I am very appreciative of all that you do.

      @VOG thanks for your vids, great for us live steam guys. Do you think 1100 degrees C max for the electric furnace for silicon bronze is enough heat, or should the furnace be able to heat to, say, 1200 degrees C? Most electric furnaces on the market only get to 1100 degrees max, I fear this is not enough for silicon bronze. Your thoughts? In your experience can the controllers be “hacked” to get to 1200 degrees C?

    • @gongarcia4071
      @gongarcia4071 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      80 grit. You need that texture. 800 grit would be pretty much like polishing it which is the exact opposite of what you want haha

    • @michimatsch5862
      @michimatsch5862 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The basic elegoo is just 200. The pro is just 250. It's really nothing considering the detail.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, honestly, 80 grit. Some use 60 grit. It sounds harsh but you should only be using consistent "firm" (not hard) pressure and it's metal after all. In the unlikely event that it scored it badly (it won't), then just switch to 200, then 400, then 600, etc, but really, the results you saw here were 80 grit paper. It works.
      I use 600, 800, 1000, 2000 grit on my models and jewellery, so I know the difference 😁

    I love the built in prime coat. I printed 12 solid models on my Phrozen Mini and had 7 fail at some point (4 never even started) and the others still were a little warped. Printed it with the prime layer (no other changes) and had 12 perfect models.
    Follow up question - This isn't really applicable in your case with a raft and supports, but for direct to plate prints, have you considered doing tabs to the print (like you see in CNC cutouts) to make detaching the prime coat easier in post-processing? It would be something that would be done in the design phase instead of Chitubox, but I think it would be wonderfully easy to clean up. I would love Chitubox to even add a feature built in with a few different options for this style of support structure.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Aaron. It's a very simple idea but it works very well. Some people say "what a waste of resin," but as you've experienced, you waste MUCH more when you have a failed print.
      I like the tabs idea... it's a clever touch. But I'm lazy and I like easy. If you watch a few more of my videos you'll see the prime coat appear quite a lot. It's thin and comes off the plate easily. After a quick wash, I easily bend and snap it into manageable sections. Only then do I reach for the cutters.
      But if you give your idea a go, let me know how you get on 😊👍👍👍

    Thanks for sharing. Really interesting level of detail you can achieve. I am VERY new to metal casting with plaster. Have done few ALU in green sand. Well will give it a try! -and now I found you and realize you have done some fantastic experience with lost wax and use of plaster. Have now printed my first ring in castable resin and have had great success in making my own vacuum chamber for both plaster and mold! Actually I have made two ovens both can reach 1300 deg C. -one with PID regulation and other with Segment progs. So it should now be possible to make a first bronce cast..:) I have one mayor question...What temperature is advisable to raise plaster mold into before puring in metal (mounted in vacuum)? I guess melting point temp. of the specific metal? or what can you recommend. Another question...:) will the plaster mold be unuseable if cold down after vapour the wax (after segmented heated) for making the pouring in metal later? Hope you have time to help me out before I enter maybe many false paths...from a Danish Fan...

      You sound very industrious. Well done!
      Temperatures vary but you want the flask lower temp than the crucible, typically between 400 and 600c. It depends a lot on the metal and on what you're castings. It's a matter of fine-tuning until you find what works for you.
      Best of luck 😁👍👍👍

    Hi VOG, thanks for your vids, great for us live steam guys. Noticed the bronze solidified partly on pouring.

    • @vogman
      @vogman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually Darin I have that set at 1020C and I find I'm getting closer to perfect now. Hotter is not always better. It's a funny process, you want it solidifying the moment it lands... if it sits just a second or two in can oxidise and spoil. So believe me, for Bronze, 1100c is working just great 😁

    A quick question...how hot is the flask, when you put it in the vacuum for pouring? Gaskets?

    • @vogman
      @vogman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I drop the flask down to around 450C but this is one of those personal choice things. I've heard stories of temperatures between 350 and 650. The gaskets cope at the lower temp end quite well but do not replacing after several casts.
