I only started watching this for two reasons George C. Scott in the thumbnail and that he was dressed like Sherlock Holmes which intrigued me. This is awesome and I've reached the point where I found out she's Watson. It just turned into a book you can't put down.
I Absolutely Love This Film . I remember when it came out. George C. Scott and Joanna Woodward are great in this. Thank You Thank You for putting this up.
A John Barry soundtrack Ive never heard, plus George C Scott and Joanne Woodward? What a treat. Every time I see Joanne Woodward I marvel at her brilliance. Its easy to see why Paul Newman fell in love with her. She has an enigmatic quality that is irresistible.
I found a deleted scene. Look for They Might Be Giants 1971 Supermarket Scene posted by Max Douglas. The Nuthouse director shows up but so do Holmes friends.
Blaise Pascal once famously stated, "The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing." This quote encapsulates the complexity and mystery of human emotions and desires.

This version lacks some very important scenes, such as the supermarket scene at the end, in case you're wondering why parts of this movie suddenly move to a different scene. Total 12 minutes is cut, shameful
@RussellKenny-y2m I saw this many times at the Elgin theater in NY, they would play it on a double bill with the Seven Percent Solution or the Private Life of SH or another Holmes movie. The Elgin would pair movies with a common theme for $1.50 back in the 70's
@@imilliemedina666 We did similar in the 70/80's in England at an old picture house, they pulled it down a few years back to build shit houses with no character.
My mom liked it a Bit more than i did. As a feature safe to air on TV, a year or two prior to the "ratings system," it would "be On" a lot. for decades, i scoured for a VHS, then DVDs- but not that enthused to order a BluRay of it. Just curious about the Lack of it. why never widely sold? too dreary? it DOES kind of "fizzle out," like Cyndy Lauper, Jeff Goldblum and Peter Falk in Vibes. i call the type: "Front-Loaded."
True. Seems like they had idea how to end it. Billy Wilder would've found a way. Perhaps: Scott to Woodward, "Nothing's elementary, my dear Watson." THEN the screen goes black.
I would like to have seen Mildred's love heals Justin's grief so that he can find himself. Then they go to a justice of the peace and the people who followed them are their witnesses. The assassin and the nuthouse director go to jail and the brother repents so his wife comes back to him. Justin gives instruction to the suicidal young man so that he is able to pass the bar. Justin and Mildred continue to cosplay as Homes and Watson just for fun. But I'm an optimist and prefer happy endings
@@barbaraferron7994 I'd have preferred, instead of that silly, overlong march up Columbus Avenue to an enigmatic black hole, an ending in which they track down an actual Moriarty, and send him tumbling over Niagara Falls, where on an impulse they get married. Trouble is, despite first-rate acting by both stars, I don't think a single spark between Patton on Paul Newman's beauteous beloved ever really came across on the screen.
A movies without a definitive ending... Did David Chase take inspitarion? Final scene has allusions to both wedding (I do) and funeral (walk near danger...I'm not afraid because you're with me - Psalm 23:4, valley of the shadow of death verse) ceremonies and to Revelation 6 and 19 (he's coming on horseback riding like a king, each also alludes to grapes of wrath). There's a much deeper cosmology to this movie than is first apparent. It is hinted at from the very beginning - Scott's character, a judge, is named Justin Playfair.
Arthur Conan DOYLE wrote the fictitious Sherlock Holmes series. ----he was British ---you would not think so watching this American caricature --version --credit is given to Goldman ??----huh ?

Good story and good acting from the leads. A lovely movie. Thank you.
What an excellent movie! Even M. Emmet Walsh popped up! He's been in everything.
this movie is pure gold. I can't believe I've never seen it before

Terrific movie. Loved it years ago and still do. Thanks.
I love the title. It would make a great name for a pop band!

That was a fun movie if you give it a chance. Like a romantic comedy with a big twist that just keeps working.
Rue McClanahan from The Golden Girls!! HAHAHAHA!!! AWESOME!!

Scott's best movie after " Patton. "
Thanks
It has to be shared because it's wonderful !
Omg it's Strickland he actually never did have hair. Hahaha that just made my day
I always had a feeling that he never had hair! This movie proves it!
CC can be found on other copies on youtube
Scott was in Patton a year prior in 1970.
Great film also !
"GRANDPA !!" ❤ 2:55

That's sad, I would like to see the supermarket part :(
@RussellKenny-y2m Apparently almost all the versions out there including Netflix have big chunks of the movie missing.
@@imilliemedina666 Have to track the original down !

Q: When Holmes friends are following him on the way to the Kiosk who is the young dark haired guy that takes Mrs. Playfair's suitcase?
That was the sketchy movie theatre attendant, played by F. Murray Abraham.
Was the B2-12 on the glass pane behind George Scott's head intentional?
Reference to 221B Baker Street ?
Would love to have watched this but no subtitles 😤
😔
I loved this movie but the ending was a let down. It doesn't make sense to me. I wanted a better wrap up at the end.

How many Sherlock Holmes live in the Big Apple now , with a female Dr. Watson ?? . Thanks/regards . Moriarty ! .
(all of them.)

@RussellKenny-y2m YES I agree ---I can avoid this awful parody -- and watch the original British Sherlock Holmes and various versions --quite easily !
Why did he just show up at the asylum hallway ?
His brother sent him there to try and get him confirmed insane, so he could claim all his money and estate.
