This game was the reason I knew how to play the game when I was a kid. It didn't matter though, nobody else in the whole school or neighborhood knew how. People just used them as status and trade barter.
So true. Even when you did find somone who knew the rules they would still bullshit, like: 1. "I used a pluspower on my Exeggutor, therefore i do 10 extra damage for EVERY COIN FLIP!" (Regardless of outcome for each individual flip, of course...) 2. "Oooops, hahaha! Sorry bro, i forgot FOR THE SEVENTH TIME that you can only have 4 of any kind of card other than basic energy. Wooops, sorry bro! We're still finishing the match, right?" 3. "What do you mean 'double normal energy is not a basic energy card', they're energy cards! Hahahahahahha, you're stupid!" (Typically argued when using Energy Retrieval etc.) 4. "Alright, my Lapras will use Confuse Ray, coin flip for confusion! *TAILS* That one doesn't count, cause my friend coughed during the flip, flip again! *HEADS* Yeah, take that, your Pokémon is confused!" I also remember a kid using Elekid's Playful Punch as an "extra attack", even though the card stated "this ends your turn": www.pokemon-cards.net/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/gen1/GEN1E022.jpg Oh the violent arguing/fights i would cause over these situations... I still enjoyed the trading and the few less-bullshitty kids i got to play Pokémon TCG with though, it was fun...
HAHAHA long ago, I learnt the difference between multiplier and addition attacks, but in an unfair way, my opponent play his multiplier attacks like an additional ones, where he hit tail 1st, and when I called he cant flip anymore, he still wants to and manage to defeat my pokemon, and that my friend is when I retire from playing (still collecting though) [my point is, its no fun to play if they don't know how to really play it, and back then Im such a sore loser hahaha] fun times *playing this tcg than IRL*
I would honestly guess this is either cause how it was recorded or to save space, but they shufle noise can be activated at a later time so i dont think its the second one
This is hands down (hah) one of the best composed Game Boy songs of all time. Extremely catchy tune, and, unlike a lot of video game music of its time and earlier, it doesn't start to loop until about 2:10 into the song. That's legitimately impressive and great composition there, especially on such limited hardware and for one of the core tunes in the game. It's especially great that the song is so long since the duels in the game typically are pretty time consuming, so the music doesn't tend to become grating like a shorter composition might. *TL;DR: This song is fantastic and the composer (Ichiro Shimakura) should be commended for the work that was done on this song and soundtrack as a whole.*
+TackyRackyComixNEO good point that i hadn't bothered thinking about. I think that standard held throughout the whole game, but that it especially made the difference here since this is the most repeated tune
@@raeomew Yes! It really is a lot like those. I love those soundtracks too, those two are probably among my favorite video game soundtracks. Kirby's Block Ball's music has some really intricate pop melodies that I never get tired of, and Fantasy Zone's music is in a league of its own. I'm glad those were the two you mentioned :)
Ahh... I remember. I was eager to have a Pokémon game for the first time when I traded one of my gbc games to a friend and he told me he would bring his "Pokémon" game to school next day and would give it to me. After some days of him not coming to school, I decided to visit him at his house and go on a small journey through the mountains where I lived to his house. When I arrived, he was like "oh dude, come here! I have it here!" And when I saw that it wasn't Pokémon Crystal... and less even, Pokémon Red or Blue... I was extremely disappointed. Then I decided to just pop it in to the GBA SP and start it because, well, why not? Little did I know, that from that moment onwards, I would create some awesome experiences and moments with it and its great soundtrack. I'll say it now, this soundtrack sounds catchier and better than Red/Blue's stellar one. But well. That's why I come back for this one often.
Well I had just gotten hold of a Gameboy and went to the shop to buy a good Pokemon game. I thought I bought a Pokemon game like yellow blue or red but I found out I bought the wrong game. Anyway first I didnt like it but then I began to like it. Still playing :d
Well my story is quite a bit similar when I was in 6th grade (now in 12th) I wanted to play a Pokémon game everyone did on Mobile (emulator) or their Nintendo systems while I didn't have one like XY/ORAS or a smartphone neither. I saw a virtual console Pokémon game for cheap in the e-shop and bought it with just a little bit of money left on that account I thought it was like the mainline games I was very dissapointed when I found out it's a card game but still gave it a shot it was difficult and I never finished it my 2ds is dead now BTW accidentally slammed it on the ground. That game may not be a mainline game where you catch and train but I still had a great time with it winning in two gyms and trying to draw the legendary Zapdos every beginning. This game is nostalgic for me cause this game showed me that whatever your situation is be happy with what you got.
Just played this game for the first time in my 20's and wow this theme is amazing from a structural perspective and from a gameboy limitation perspective. Obviously the theme you will hear the most needs to be good but wow this goes on for long before looping which is so rare for this era. a whole 2+ minute loop
I feel like this game had one of the best soundtracks of the early Nintendo days. Every track is insane. Espesially when you consider what they had to work with
Isn't it weird that this game-- a game about a trading card game-- can be so memorable and so much fun? The music is even fantastic. It makes me smile.
This games brings me back to 2001 and 2002 when I played this game a lot next to Yellow and Gold/Crystal. I loved sitting in the garden with my GBC and playing this game. Reason why Gen 1 Pokémon are more familiar than the others.
I literally just started a playthrough of this earlier after so many years. Of course I went with my favorite Squirtle and Friends deck. Love this game to bits. I listen to this song while working from home too. Gets the brain cells going.
came across this music the other day... i was surprised of the musical intensity that lies within this piece and the whole soundtrack of p. trading card game.... these are not just little pieces in my opinion. if they were performed by an orchestra, people would never guess they originally come from a videogame!
@es Of course, if playing against human players, that was a dangerous strategy. Oh, what's that, you have a hand of 32 cards, most of which you desperately want to use? Imposter Prof Oak, all those cards now go to the Discard pile.
I've got no particularly deep connections with this game. Used to own it as a kid and played it when I've got bored of other pokemon games. But the sound and composition of this soundtrack really got ingrained into my memory, to a point where I want to have this play on my funeral or something. It's truely impressive for its time and seems great even for today's standards. Can honestly not express the amount of joy the song gives me.
I remember even as a child when I played this game I thought this song was awesome. It was one of the reasons I ended up playing so much of the damn game.
I played this game exactly one time when I was 8 or something at my cousin's house and I still remember this song. So damn catchy. (It makes me want to play the game...)
i got this game at the age of 5 and i thought i wasted my parent's money but after 2nd grade i learn how to actually read and this game was a unforgetable one. i am glad ppl didnt forget about this game =D
I can see people preferring the Club Master or Grand Master theme. The latter in particular is probably the best theme in isolation. It might be easier to create music for important opponents because the stakes are high, so you can make it all dramatic and stuff. You know exactly which mood you're going for. However, given that the normal duel battle music plays the most throughout the game, it has to convey a variety of things without overdoing it. It can't be too laid-back, but it can't be too serious either. It has to be just right. And it is. That's why I think I have to hand it to the normal duel music to be the best track of the game.
My childhood! Tears instantly falls down my cheeks... ;-; I remember loving this tune so much that I would occasionally leave my game boy speaker on my ear. Remember getting $1 headphones at the 99 cents store to listen this and pikachus thundershock in Pokémon yellow. It was so cool. :D
