Something interesting to me is that the theme has this grandiosity of a big, official challenge, but the melody around the 0:58 mark is happy and quaint, underscoring a sort of idyllic world, only to roll back into more of that more intense edge again. It's fitting for a game that's not about actual physical battle, where everyone's ultimately just there to have fun together.
This song is amazing. The dynamics, the different instruments, the melody...my favorite handheld game song (even better than Pokémon's gym battle theme and some of Donkey Kong Country's themes, IMO), and possibly even one my favorite tunes for a boss from any game I have played, along with Molgera's from Wind Waker, and the Hive Mecha / Incinerator Drone and Metroid Prime first form themes from the first Metroid Prime. (Haven't played many PlayStation games.) Great childhood memories!
I think the grandmaster theme is better. Not only is the grandmaster theme even more dynamic than this one, as dynamic as this theme is, but the music also builds up more, until it gets to the climax, and ultimate restarts. It's just so satisfying to hear the music build up at the end and the restart. Moreso even than in this one. Although I do love this theme a lot too. It's why I'm here now.
My favorite song in the game. This game had some of the best music and gameplay on the GBC. Reminds me of dueling Murray and his Pokemon Centers and Chanseys (UGH!). I still like to play this and Monster Rancher Battle Card (another awesome card game for the GBC).
Hudsonsoft devved it, why didn't they do more? Like when it came to YGO, that franchise got umpteen fucking releases, while the Pkmn tcg grew and grew like crazy, probably even more than YGO... It must have seemed incredibly daunting.
Dunno if you've played it yet, but there is a sequel (Pokemon Card GB2), it was just never officially released in America. Up until a few years ago, you could dig up a semi-translated rom which had only the parts required to complete the game translated, which sufficed, but now there are full English translations out there and they're easily accessible. It's everything you ever wanted from a sequel, I'd say it's to the original what Gold & Silver were to Red & Blue...all the cards from the first game, plus all the Team Rocket sets we had IRL, and a good chunk of Gameboy exclusives from what I remember. There's a whole new island with a bunch of new gyms, there are even a lot of battles where your deck has to meet certain requirements, like a basic example being your only energy could be Water, or you could only have Colorless Pokemon, I think one said your deck had to have 4 Rattatas, or 4 Magikarps, something like that...it was an interesting way of forcing you to experiment with different decks and use cards you might not otherwise, instead of just making what you think is the strongest deck you can make or the most optimal counter to your opponent. Between that and just the sheer amount of cards available, it delivers a ton in terms of strategy and deck building. Anyone who was a fan of the original game and wished they could have played a sequel should definitely check it out.
After hearing this again yesterday I just had to search for my copy and play it. The battery still works and I just beat two Leaders today. Feelgoodman
I love love LOVE this tune to pieces. Almost as much as I do the first Smithy fight tune from Super Mario RPG, and that's loving it a LOT. Sad that today's games' boss battle tunes can't measure up to the best of the 8- and 16-bit era greats.
@@Uma-ThermosDarkwing Duck boss battle (NES), DKC2 boss battle (SNES), all MGS1-3 boss battle tunes (I already forgot all about MGS4 except for how much it bored me 🥱). Megalomania from Live-aLive (SNES) even though I’ve never played the game. Of course, last and most, all boss battle tunes from SMRPG sit atop them all. I wish I had the same love for the Chrono Trigger and FFVI soundtracks as everyone else seems to have, even though Yoko Shimomura also composed those. Which soundtracks do you like?
This was a surprisingly good game, despite how lame the idea seemed. And this is a surprisingly good theme. I've had an idea of combining (a much more exciting version of) this theme and Bombing Mission from FFVII in a medley. I'll have to put that together someday.
I'm suprised Nintendo hasn't made a version of this game for DSi with the more modern cards and wifi features, it probably because they think the Pokemon TCG series isn't as popular as it used to be. If they did make this for DSi or even the 3DS, it might just knock Konami and Yu-Gi-Oh! for a loop. I know one thing for sure, they ever make another game in this series and its as fun to play, simplistic and has as good music as the first 2, I would gladly buy it and play it again.
:DDDDDDDDDDD I was looking for this song for the longest time...every now and then it would come back into my head and I'd be humming it forever! Especially at the 0:58 second mark!
Damn, I would LOVE to hear a rock or metal version of this track. This probably one of my favorite songs from this game. 2nd goes to the extremely weird imakuni theme.
IKR!? I wanna play it SO badly as a VC download! I'm STILL waiting for this game! I used to play it when I was 10 years old! I don't care how much it will cost, it would be worth the wait!
Instead of releasing weird mobile games, I really wish Nintendo released another TCG RPG for the Switch. It would sell gangbusters like every Pokemon game on the switch, I don't get why they don't do it, its the perfect platform
@immunitytothedark i still have mine after 10 XD and its the japanese version, thank you ebay and a dad who doesn't totally read the descriptions XD i had to learn to play a fully japanese game where reading is pretty important, at age 6 XD and right now i have the sucker in my super game boy on my snes and i'm listening to the song right now!
Took me forever to find this. I was listening to "Shadows" by Lindsey Stirling and the first few notes in that song are some notes from here. After I figured out it was this song I was thinking of, I nostalgia'd so hard.
14 years after this game has come out, and I picked it back up after about 7 years of not using it, and popped it in my old Game Boy Color. Holy shit, nostalgia trip.
The hero squares off against the mighty evil villain, the fate of the entire planet to be decided by a single trial by combat and... What? It's just a kid's card game? Then why the epic battle theme?
@papermarkis that's not the point, playing the original version of a game can just be as fun as playing the remake. I am a retro video game collector and I understand the fun of playing the original cartridge, and also there is money to be made with the old games. If you disagree with me then look at how well older games sell on nintendo's virtual console and Sony's psn
Let's flip a coin to see who goes first!
YOUR OPPONENT GOES FIRST.
***** *Resets* YOUR OPPONENT GOES FIRST. *resets* YOUR OPPONENT GO- *resets* YOUR OPPON- *Resets* YOUR O- *resets*...
Haha, yep, I remember my pathetic 12-year-old-self finally figuring it out... I didn't know that what the action was didn't matter, though! :)
+Parasectesque I always flipped it right when the pikachu side of the coin would come up. Worked like a charm.
+JDLupus this had me dying because I did this when I six years old hahaha fun times
***** Hahaha, you and me both :)
that entrance sound + the shuffle + this theme = magic
not gonna lie, i expected to play the 'VS screen' sound and shuffle in my head, such a silly thing to get hyped for but it is!
The shuffle sound effect in this game is one of the most pleasure inducing sounds in a videogame.
It's been 20 years and I still remember this theme.

(Haven't played many PlayStation games.)
Great childhood memories!
They should either remake this game or reuse some of the music as a tribute.
reminds me of one of jackals themes for NES
This music is among the BEST boss battle tunes I've heard, and I've heard quite a bit. Among my top 5 no doubt.
Pokemon TCG's Music was underrated for its time in my opinion, I would love to hear modern remakes of the music from this iand the Japan only sequel.
All Pokemon games do an incredible job in making your spine having chills, knowing you're now fighting an important duel. This song is perfect.
Man, does this tune set a mood. It says to us: You better make sure you make every move count, otherwise you're done for.
And that perfectly fits the TCG, one wrong move can and will cost you the game
The chorus melody is so simple yet evokes so much drama. Absolutely lovely.
no one gives credit how good the attacks sounded in this game. tops every pokemon game except pokemon silver (super effective)
This song honestly has the same flow as all of my favorite main series games.
*songs from main series games
Definitely one of my favorites. Not just for this game, but all vgms as a whole.
... I swear this game overall has a better soundtrack than ANY other Pokemon game out there.
Right??? So wild
Still the best song from the whole game. This honestly should've been the grandmaster theme
Commenting in 2023, not sure why the soundtrack from this game ramdomly pops up in my head at times lmaoo still 🔥 many years later
This still slaps
What they managed to do with the limited sounds of the Gameboy was amazing.
Eternally.
I wish this would play at a club as a social experiment lmfao I'd be out there rippin' it regardless
This song still randomly plays in my head sometimes. I'm 33 now 😅
I'm 30 yld and for some reason this song randomly pops in my head when I'm solving a difficult problem at work.
My favorite song in the game. This game had some of the best music and gameplay on the GBC. Reminds me of dueling Murray and his Pokemon Centers and Chanseys (UGH!). I still like to play this and Monster Rancher Battle Card (another awesome card game for the GBC).
you sound like my rl brother xD
Honestly I'm thinking about remaking this song. This soundtrack has been in my head all weekend for no reason
Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. JUST DO IT. MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. do it pliss.
its been 4 months man, wheres the upload?
c'mon dude ! Let's do this!
I've got your back dude!
Haven't heard this song in YEARS, just went to this video and the entire tune. Memories
This game was so amazing that even if you barely win and get deeper into it, you could say it was a true classic.
Whenever I play any sort of card game (Pokémon, Yugioh, Poker) I play this or just play it in my head like today 🤣
They need this theme in super smash brothers.
Edward Vey I agree but I like the grandmaster song way better.
Joseph Pereida no the base battle theme is the best
@@9xxxmusicxxx9 nah, imakuni is where its at
Considering how Nintendo loves to milk Pokemon, they aren't releasing a TCG game soon. Maybe never again. They'd have already done it.
+Leo Stephan Pokémon Trading Card Game Online is a thing, you know...
+Nicolas Poriau But it's not a TCG RPG like the Game Boy ones.
At least we have this one on the Virtual Console, though.
Hudsonsoft devved it, why didn't they do more? Like when it came to YGO, that franchise got umpteen fucking releases, while the Pkmn tcg grew and grew like crazy, probably even more than YGO... It must have seemed incredibly daunting.
me and my friends all got high and started rapping to this beat lol!!!!
good times!...damn im stupid.
This is one of the cooler pokemon songs for sure, needs to be in the next smash or something
Grandmaster duel is better
This kept popping up in my head, and i could never place it. I literally looked for 10 years.
This puts a smile on my face
Greatest piece of Pokemon music in its franchise
0:57 why I came here
^
I'm all about that 0:16 lyf
Composer absolutely snapped with this one
Did so well w the limited layers of the gameboy.
You fuckin know it
Finals in a tournament with this song would making it epic
Epic game, epic times.
Back when Base Set beasts like Hitmonchan and Electabuzz ruled the court (and of course Scyther!).
de arrepiar, mesmo após tantos anos, ce é loko!!!!!!!!
Tinha zerado esse ano finalmente, tava com preguiça de jogar
I still have this game, but an remake whould be so nice! ;)
Why has there been no reboot yet!?!?!?!
If you have a 3DS, there will be something like that on thursday. This game is going to be re-released for the virtual console.
Because there are now too many cards in existence to program into a single game.
Your comment is 2 years old but there is a game called Pokemon Trading Card game Online for pc, Mac, iOS and android tablets for free
There are yu-gi-oh games with every single card in them, why should it be impossible to create a pokémon trading card game with every card?
Dunno if you've played it yet, but there is a sequel (Pokemon Card GB2), it was just never officially released in America. The goosebumps. What a jam.
omg 2018 bumpin this first time in 9 years
this game has one of the best music from the rest of the pokemon games

Love this I even still have this cartridge, and I was born in2001. I never did beat it though
This was a surprisingly good game, despite how lame the idea seemed.

This game is stiff my fav Pokemon game ever, with incredible tunes such as this one. Thanks for uploading.
@french jesus it's a typo, it's still, not stiff.
@french jesus says the guy wasting his time pointing out typos in 6 yo messages thinking he's funny
This track helped me beat the club masters.
The best video game about the best card game about the best video game ... Brilliant!!
the basic beat sounds like the music for triple triad. :,D

There HAS to be an orchestral version of this song. Its just so beautiful.
This would make such a bad ass hair metal song.
Too bad that modern Nintendo music lost that vibe that old Nintendo music had.
Whoever dislikes this couldn't beat the Water Club Leaders Lapras
I play this game mostly for the music, but the gameplay itself is pretty good too.
This song is so epic.... i turned up my voulume of my computer.... OMFG Its so epic! better than the red gym leader theme
The start of of 0:57 reminds me a little bit of the marvel vs capcom 3 main menu theme
So ready to here this on the Switch
This was a fun game, the thing I remember the most is curbstomping the rest of game after I got Charizard. XD
Damn, I would LOVE to hear a rock or metal version of this track. This probably one of my favorite songs from this game. 2nd goes to the extremely weird imakuni theme.
Here you go.

Yea, it’s called Muse - Uprising. Which this song stole from.
You're joking right?
IKR!? I wanna play it SO badly as a VC download! I'm STILL waiting for this game! I used to play it when I was 10 years old! I don't care how much it will cost, it would be worth the wait!
Whenever i heard this music i always thought "FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU" because the club leaders used to always smash me.
so much win in this game
literally crying rn
How does this game still have the best music after all this time?
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 best song ever, I bump this in my head when I play a game in our locals
omfg, i love that part too, its a fucking and nostalgic eargasm, that simple.
Instead of releasing weird mobile games, I really wish Nintendo released another TCG RPG for the Switch. It would sell gangbusters like every Pokemon game on the switch, I don't get why they don't do it, its the perfect platform
I love this game my sister used to play it with me,
Slaps no cap
The muse has some explaining to do 😂😂😂😂

Still don't know what blud is waffling about here
this SLAPS
I played this game so much I knew exactly which frame to initiate the coin flip in order to win it.
the start reminds me of triple triad from ff8
this theme is so cool
BRINGS ME TO HAPPY JOYOUS TEARS. i can do ANYTHING!!! 💪
my friends and i always have tournaments and play this theme on the last two players. im always one of the two players in our championships lol
The very beginning kinda sounds like "wimoweh wimoweh"
THE MEMORIES! THEY BURN!
Remake for 3ds pls i need this
Europe has this game for the 3ds T_T
You can download it in the eShop :P
+MAZZ0Murder We can?
Yeah, I have it on my 3DS...the original though, not a remake.
海外ではリメイクというかVCは出てるの?
The intro is noticeably similar to “Shuffle or Boogie”, the card battle theme from Final Fantasy VIII....
14 years after this game has come out, and I picked it back up after about 7 years of not using it, and popped it in my old Game Boy Color.
Holy shit, nostalgia trip.
Who is listening to this in 2021?
i can wait to fight the boss *dead on turn 1*
I heard this alot after dueling murray many times
The hero squares off against the mighty evil villain, the fate of the entire planet to be decided by a single trial by combat and... What? It's just a kid's card game? Then why the epic battle theme?
@StarCreme You make a good point there.
i play this music while im playing pokemon trading card game online lol gives it better taste
I would replay club master duels just to hear this track, all the other member duels were meaningless to me.

This is because this music is not used to distort it as parody or other shit. This is an imperturbable music. :)
100% awesome
Why haven't we gotten an updated version of this for the 3DS?
Ahhh now this opens the flood gates of Nostalgia~
You'll be surprised. Pokemon Card GB2 has some amazing music! Search it on youtube.
@Izanagidonutz WOOT WOOT!
Fuck it's like they got Hans Zimmer composing the music for the game
