Sanyo M9903K Repair and Tape Mechanism Service. Rare Boombox

- Hi folks,
Here's a very rare and cool old Sanyo Radio Cassette! It had potential, but needed a major service and clean - especially to get the cassette deck up and running. A fun unit to work on, and the sound quality of the unit really is great when finished.

@@DeePaignall I honestly don't know. It's difficult to say because so many models are rare now. I absolutely love my RC-838, and these are mega rare in the UK - but still readily available in the US. Mind you, the RC-545 and 646 are rare. I also have a couple of Aiwa 955's which you don't see many of. I'll have to make a video of them all at some point. What about you?
@@retro_restos Great to hear your viewpoint thx, my 1st box was a 5150 (the schools' I got to take home!) so that's special but the 5250 is great(er). I love bass so a B90 Kaboom is nice to have. Just got an Aiwa W7 which is really neat! Luv 'em!

what size/brand/type of screwdriver are you using, i'm having trouble finding one that can reach? i have the same boombox. also, i have a lot of flutter, could it be the belt?
I imagine the flutter is the belts and/or pinch roller. Possibly (rarely) flat spot on the motor.
I almost always use long screwdrivers (not sure of the brand). These were originally to adjust motorcycle carburettors/empty float bowls due to the long reach - I find them so essential for boomboxes that they're almost all I use. In fact, I reckon I spend nearly 100% of screwdriver use to be the long PZ2 and a bit of long PZ1. I keep meaning to find a JIS set for the 'Made in Japan' stuff - but the regular pozis seem to work. Also, I find that long screwdrivers help to keep better visibility for viewers when I'm filming, as they keep my hands out of the way!

Is it possible to put some higher quality speakers in it? And what size belts does it take?
You can upgrade the speakers. They are 3 ohm - I think 4 inch. You just have to be careful about depth and clashes with the internals (most boomboxes have shallow speakers. I didn't catalogue the belt sizes for this one, but I explain how to measure them up in some of my other videos - but a cheap way to get it right is use a cheap multipack set to get the right fit, and measure those for decent belts. Hi how did u adjust and calibrate the tape speed please
Hi, thanks for watching. I didn't adjust the speed on this one. It was running correctly by ear really. As the mechanism is a simple one (mostly geared), and the motor has no internal trim, I just went with it. I don't recall seeing a remote trim pot on the board, but to be honest I didn't look for one as it was running well. I don't have a schematic for this one, so couldn't say for sure whether the speed can be adjusted. Is yours not running correctly?
@retro_ restos mine runs just a pinch slow. Enough to be annoying. And there does not seem to be a way to calibrate the tape speed on this model.
@@hawk4366 yes, I don't think there's a trim pot, even in the board. Belts ok? Spindles running nice and free? Motor voltage good?
