A 500hp V8 Swapped Miata is the Best Idea Ever

  • The formula has been around for years: big motor swapped into small car. So what’s the best possible combo of those two, while staying street-able with common parts? An LS3 in a Miata, duh. Biggest engine in the smallest car. Flyin’ Miata has been perfecting that recipe for some time, and this ND Miata is the pinnacle of their work.

      I have found and saved the rarest Mazda FC RX7 ever made! Now this car is rare. Really rare! Let me break this down really quick...
      Ever heard of the rare 100 GTUs rx7s? Only 40 have ever been claimed and only 7 are confirmed at the time of this posting! Here are the rarest rx7 FC3S models:
      1500 10AE Turbo models
      1400 infini
      1000 winning limited
      150 final edition convertible
      100 GTUs...
      out of that 100:
      83 red on black
      10 black on black
      7 white on blue
      There was only 100 GTUs models created between 1989 and 1991.
      If you own one of these rare models sign your car up to the registry list here on any of the rotary forums!
      There are rumors about a restamped GTUs model...
      The entire origins GTUs owners thread on the rx7club was modified, icemarks claims deleted, registry list changed to have a confirmed section and the mods agree there are not enough GTUs models to have the restamped.
      Icemark cites himself while making up the claims almost 20 years ago. 😆
      There are no restamped GTUs models, only GTU. Stop spreading false information. There are only 100 GTUs models made, only 40ish have been claimed to have been found, only 7 have been confirmed!
      www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-general-discussion-323/very-rare-detail-fc-1129229/
      If you have a real GTUs you can register it here!

    I absolutely love the idea of this.
    A small, light, RWD car, with far too much power and not enough grip.

      @Alpha Wërks they are really cool, but it ruins the weight balance unless done right and the suspension is entirely reworked and upgraded aggressively. and it is 100% a cheat code , itll make a half ass driver make themselves feel really good and like they can drive anything wich is very dangerous when they get into something that is much much less forgiving

    • @perryleduc1954
      @perryleduc1954 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Alpha Wërks absolutely , theres a kid by me that has one and drives it like a cockwobble, and is just a danger to himself and anyone else with a few hundred feet of him at any given time, but your right it doesn't take much to fix it but most people either don't try , or dont know enough to understand that it isnt right, a good buddy of mine swapped a vw vr6 turbo into his miata and with a little weight balance work i think its how they shouldve come from the factory! its amazing.

    • @chandlereastham
      @chandlereastham 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Perry Leduc it really doesn’t change the weight balance much at all a aluminum ls only weighs like 50 pounds more than the steel 4cylinder i had a ls swapped 97 miata and you couldn’t even really feel the difference besides all the power

    I know that pain. Many years ago I swapped a 2003 Mazdaspeed protege 2.0 turbo power/drivetrain & ECU into a ‘99 protege (1.8 NA). The wiring, and getting the electronics to work with the rest of the car (gauges, lights, fuel system, ABS to non-ABS, harness incompatibilities, etc.) so that it could be drivable and pass inspection was an absolute freaking nightmare. Wiring diagrams literally the size of a kitchen table with print smaller than 08 font. _Lots_ of cutting, splicing/soldering and retrofitting sensors. And that was for a same make/similar platform swap. Can’t imagine how much of a pain the dissimilarity here must have been.

    Keith philosophy behind the setup for this car just blowed my mind. All boxes thicked for me. Great work. The only thing not mentioned in the chat was the weight distribution - how far off it is from the original design? Main thing for me that makes mx5 so fun to drive.

    • @jakekiedaisch2279
      @jakekiedaisch2279 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weight distribution is actually not that different. It's 53/47 for the soft top, and 52/48 for the RF. Stock was 51/49 soft top, and 50/50 RF. And overall the car only gained 300lbs which brought it from 2300 to 2600lbs.

    • @spdcrzy
      @spdcrzy ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Ladybirdsin16mm
      @Ladybirdsin16mm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jakekiedaisch2279 Yeah but it's not just about distribution, you now have 300lbs more weight in the front, on the front wheels. Tho I read the LS3 weighs 403lbs. It's hard to find the weight of a standard MX5, but it's possible that the engine has almost doubled in weight. I know americans love to their V8's into everything, no matter how small, but it must affect the handling, theres no way it wouldn't

    • @spdcrzy
      @spdcrzy 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ladybirdsin16mm they've braced the entire frame of the car so the chassis is actually stronger and stiffer than before. So because the weight distribution is virtually unchanged, it actually makes it handle even better.

    For the kind of driving I do, particularly on windy roads, I would prefer a four-cylinder because the car would handle tight corners better. The V8 throws the Miata's perfectly balanced weight off.

    • @shadfletcher6815
      @shadfletcher6815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree,I always thought a v6 or a rotary would be better suited for the Miata than the 4 cylinder which is underpowered or a v8

    • @trashbandit2449
      @trashbandit2449 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's barely heavier than the four cylinder. 40 pounds I think

    • @Ladybirdsin16mm
      @Ladybirdsin16mm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trashbandit2449 The LS3 is 403lbs. It's hard to find the weight of a standard MX5 engine (200-300lbs), but it's possible that the engine has almost doubled in weight, and thats right on the front wheels. I know americans love to their V8's into everything, no matter how small it is, but it must affect the handling, theres no way it wouldn't

    • @trashbandit2449
      @trashbandit2449 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ladybirdsin16mm the numbers I'm seeing on mx5 forums is it will add 120 pounds to the front, 60 pounds to the back (LS trans is heavy). Something to keep in mind is the mx5 engine is cast iron, compared to the ls3 being aluminum.
      I have seen before that it doesn't mess up weight distribution as much as you'd think. But weight distribution isn't a big deal anyway, most of it has been just marketing. Unless it's a wild amount, it won't change handling. Weight distribution from side to side is far more important than front to back
      I don't remember where I saw that it was 40 pounds so I can't back that up. I don't believe that is correct
      Edit- v8 miata is roughly 55/45 compared to the factory 52/48. By moving the v8 back towards the firewall people have numbers like 52.6/47.4

    How did it affect the balance?
    I'm sure on paper it is fairly dramatic due to the weight, but specifically how did it feel from the driver's seat?

    • @dylanandersen9318

      LS's dont weigh nearly as much as people think they do. They're an Aluminum, pushrod, smallblock. Naturally they are very compact and light due to this, especially compared to most OHC engines. That's why they're so popular for swapping

    • @Ladybirdsin16mm
      @Ladybirdsin16mm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dylanandersen9318 Yeah but it's not just about distribution, you now have 403lbs more weight in the front, on the front wheels. Nobody's even mentioning how awesome a resurrection of rotary engines would be for this kinda swap. I know they have issues, but,
    A. It would fit
    B. The weight is better suited for the car.
    C. True Mazda fans would actually approve.

      I been saying the ND RF is perfect for a 26b swap. More power than the LS, just as much potential, about as reliable too. Much easier to rebuild. And weighs less.
