  • Flyin' Miata has been the go-to name for V8 conversions for all generations of the Mazda MX5 Miata. Now, they've shown up with their newest build, a brand new 'ND' Miata with a 520 HP 6.2L LS engine, complete driveline upgrades to back it up, full suspension, bigger wheels, better tires, and thanks to the magic of CANBUS, everything works, from the automatic climate control, to the keyless go, to the bluetooth. It's a furiously fast and remarkably balanced package that absolutely blew us away.

    2600 lbs, all the power you could ever need, big brakes, suspension.... Why the hell can't the OEMs do this? Kudos to Flying Miata.

      Well, I'm sure that they could if they wanted to. It's just way too small a market for their interest. Heck, look at Ford cutting sedans in the US. Last year's Fusion sales (I think about 220K) is in the ballpark (didn't look it up) of all Mazda vehicle sales in the US (slightly under 2% of US market). And Ford already has some sunken cost, which won't be saved, continuing sedans overseas. SUVs just too profitable, so that is where all their effort is going. Small markets are (generally) for small companies.

      2600 is to heavy. And to me it kills what a miata is subpost to be. Very light and nimble, now compared to a normal sized car 2600 is considerably light. I own a 2005 mx5 and I'm planning on swapping it with a j37 v6. Which has 200 hp more and weighs lighter than the stock engine. So now I have more power and less weight. So now I dont need to put heavy duty parts into it. And my car could possibly be faster.

      There is a concept, a philosophy behind the Mx-5. The point is not to go fast, it's to have fun at whatever speed you're doing. A big part of that comes from running the engine all the way through the rev range, squeezing it for all the power it can provide, which is not much, bit feels inredibly rewarding. Now check this video. I doubt he went over 3.5K (except on those staged straight accelerations). It's more powerful, yeah. It's good for highway or straight line pull, yes. But is sucks in the slow twisties, which is the whole point of the MX-5 philosophy.

  • @MrBybz
    @MrBybz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +546

    The price of all the parts is astonishing high by themselves. The brand new motor, trans, and harness alone is 13.8k not to mention the 2000 for v8 roadster subframe kit. 2500 for the fox racing coilovers and at least 1000 for the diff. 2500 for the rest of the rear end driveline 1000 for the little big break kit. Exhaust is another 1000. The moroso short oil pan 1000. All of this for brand new parts is around 24k and that's missing a lot of small things that add up to possibly a couple more grand. If you had a non specialized shop charging the typical 75hr at no less than 100hrs that's 30+k. Flyin' isn't some random shop though they are the v8 miata guys with years and years of RnD. I own a 06 mx5 and have crunched these numbers too many times. I've also sourced junkyard engines and parts and it still comes out to no less than 10 grand for a d.i.y. swap with a way more sketchy result. So for everyone here saying it's too much cost for the resulting car hasn't simply done the math.

      no you guys are wrong. I have built my 2016 ND MX5 so I have lots of experience with this. Mine is a way better built, more reliable, faster, all quality parts, so let me explain my built to you, I put a ferrari badge for 5$ on mine, so my built cost 5$ + the MX5, and because it's now a ferrari it's a lot faster. but of course I saved over 9000$ of labour by doing the badge swap myself.

      Don't bother trying to explain to all the 13-25yr old Forza players who have never ever personally owned, let alone driven, a high performance fast car that hard earned money went into modifying and doubling the power while making it beautiful and reliable.
      These Forza kids drive Elantra or Corolla sedans that mommy gave them rather than trade in.
      Trying to explain to these kids the difference between chp and whp alone will drive you insane. lol
      Flying Miata would be MY go to company if I had the money and wanted a V8 ND generation Miata RF( I love the look better). Just like Singer would build my old 911 up-coversion to modern spec drivetrain and built motor.

    Flyin' Miata, and a few other businesses like it here in the U.S. is seriously one of the best things about owning a Miata in the first place. They offer high quality parts for literally anything you could want for your car from full fledged engine swap kits, turbo kits, suspension kits, and many many more things. I bet they charge over $150/hr. and that car has easy $15k in just engine/trans/rearend. and whatever parts you take off your stock ND either sell or they may give you credit. don't compare the miata you can build with a junkyard LQ engine,old T56 trans and some random rearend..yea you could build old miata for under $15k yourself....I've bought few things from Flyin Miata and they have always been top amazing quality and great service.

      Remarkably cheap considering the amount of integration and reliability testing required. It's not just a matter of throwing parts at it until it works, designing a car to work as a unit despite the immense complexity of its suspension is no mean feat. The chassis is the most difficult part, and not just the process of engineering the mounting system for the powertrain.

  • @ducfandan1117
    @ducfandan1117 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wish I could get this past wifey. Such a well-done reengineering... this is no mere “swap”. They’ve done the entire powertrain to handle the output, they’ve done the brakes to whoa it, they’ve done the suspension to control it, and they’ve done the CANBUS work to integrate it. And I love how the exhaust work sounds burly without being droney or obnoxious. Mature power, no cringe-worthy cheap noises. Fantastic work, Flyin’ Miata team! 👌🍻

    Guys, $50k plus car isn't that bad when you consider this is a brand new 100% custom car. It is really well balanced meaning you don't have like a 80/20 weight split. You have amazing turn in and excellent power to weight. If you want a cheaper v8 miata then buy a used one. They can be found for under $20k all day long.

    Just love these FM guys... Keith is near God-like status in so many different (and non Miata) communities. I've been a fan since they were in West Orange NJ (Only 2 towns away from me then) and the things their "stuff" can do for my '93 (now turbo) Miata is nothing short of a miracle.. I've dropped a tick over 300 HP from a 1.6 liter engine.... Did you get that? A bottle of milks worth of displacement. And the car is 150% drive-able, next to no lag (2871r bb- and soon a billet upgrade) and is an absolute blast to drive at 2275 lbs with fluids. On a cool night, when the intercooler is extra happy (cold), I can smoke 2nd gear and even the top of 3rd!!!! Anything over 300 is useless (but entirely welcome)... I'm calling them tomorrow for a new downpipe and turbo manifold.... Simply can't wait!!!!

    I might not be a popular opinion, but the LFX V6 engine will fit the Miata's character so much better. You still get twice the power of the stock engine. Also the engine is lighter than the V8, has the weight distribution further back, revs higher, leaves space in the engine bay, and sounds so good (it basically sounds like a GTR ).

      bacongobbler Mazda car with Chevrolet power train. Shouldn't be too challenging for a good independent to spanner. Support for LS crate stuff is excellent and once in a blue moon you'll need a part from their inventory but that is true of most unusual cars and Flyin Miata have a good track record. See little to fear here.

    Yep. Been driving a Miata since 2003 had a '96 NA and now I have a 99 with a FM Suspension FM springs, sways and Koni yellows. Also Enkie RP-F1 9.9 lb 15" wheels. This with a hunter balance and proper alignment does wonders for the way the car handles. I have no power mods of any kind im all stock other than that. I can't deny there are times I wish I had more power but this modification more than makes up for it in terms of how i drive my car.
    This LS3 mod is VERY expensive. I'd be more interested in any FM upgrades for the existing engine like a SC or Turbo for the ND or any other generation Miata. Be a lot cheaper, this LS3 mod is overkill. Even a entry level turbo on any Miata is overkill enough but MUCH cheaper. To each their own I guess if you got the money. I always wanted to get a turbo or supercharger but California so its pretty much forget it.

    Totally unrelated story that I have nowhere else to share it: I blew the clutch on my daily driver, a Ford Ranger, so I've been sailying my brothers '93 Geo Metro since he doesn't really use it. It has a three-cylinder (94 hp/62 lbft of torque from the factory mofuckaaas) so it has a really riled-up idle sound. Some dude in a late 90's-early-00's Mustang pulls up, so I give him a rev just to see what happens. He looks at me, smiles, and revs. We wait, and both mat it as soon as the light changes. He smoked the shit out of me, but it was a goddamn good time and it reminded me of how much fun the car community car be. Never in my life did I think i'd drag race a dude in a fuckin three cylinder Geo Metro of all things lmao

    +thesmokingtire If you're into track days and having fun on the weekends with a car, is the juice worth the squeeze to build or buy a v8 Miata over a C6 or C7 Vette? I've been trying to figure out what will be my next fun car and both these cars are on the list of possibles. I've driven both but never actually driven what I'd consider a well-sorted LS swapped Miata. I'd expect a shorter performance ceiling with the Miata but since it's lighter it'd be easier on wearables it might net me cheaper fun in the long run while still retaining a somewhat livable experience on the street. I'm not in love with the looks of either but I am a fan of the performance and fun, along with the ease of LS parts. Matt, since you drive everything under the sun do you have any thoughts that could help?
