Problem with streaming is, they can TAKE AWAY your favourite shows without warning (to some degree). Hence why piracy exists. Especially with the death of physical ownership of media and games.
thinking of take away some shit you never bought like a show you can view on netflix as theft is the reason i think there should be educational tests with terminal results if you fail.

Ownership doesn't have to die with physical media.
I buy nearly all my games on GOG or Itch. I buy all my music on bandcamp. Bandcamp gives me straight up MP3s and flacs, and GOG will give me offline installers which I can store indefinitely.
There's hopes within the gog community of the company retrying video again (though probably unlikely), but if you have floatplane, they offer a clear download button.
Ownership is not synonymous with Physical Media. They're simply two things that tend to get conflated

Went back to Arrrrrrrrrr when Netflix stopped carrying real movies.
This is exactly why I went back to physical media like Blu Rays. Not only is the video and audio quality better because it's uncompressed, but I can watch what I want, when I want, without having to pay monthly. I only pay to watch what I want. Plus, many Blu Ray nowadays have digital codes which allow me to "stream" media when I really want to. So, physical media for the win! I still think Best Buy made a mistake getting rid of physical media.
I don't think Best Buy even cares if they made a mistake for axing physical media sales.
all video is compressed. we have never used uncompressed video outside of editing, and today with 10 and 12bit color, 4k resolutions, storing and streaming that data uncompressed is unrealistic. We can just use bitrates so high that there is no perceivable loss.

With all the dark colored shows/movies everyone is making more and more of, I hate those black/grey serrations you get while streaming. It doesn’t matter how fast your internet is, it’s bound to come due to intra/inter frame compression

Life pro tip: join your library and rent dvds from there if they offer the service. Mine does it for free, as well as offering some streaming services.

@@sumomaster5585 technically they could make copies of the DVD's since they have poor encryption and programs like MakeMKV can decrypt the disk into a single container file for archiving / storage. I used Make MKV to make legitimate backups of my blu-ray discs that I own to stream in my media center.

Sure maybe if you want something specific you'll have to go in, but it's not like the library is some major hassle. Pick up 5 movies for the week and don't deal with internet limits or poor streaming quality or issues if you don't pirate from a good site.

I don't have subscription of any streaming services, I just watch shows and movies whichever I like on free movie website because I watch some shows from every streaming it's not feasible for me to buy subscription of literally every streaming services.
In some cases it truly does anger the customers when said service just makes a horrible show. I know Crunchyroll awhile back made a terrible animated show that felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be which angered so many people that rather then focusing on making the service better or acquiring more licenses CR was using their money to fund that lol. Don't forget HBO canceled so many promising animations just so they could put all their eggs in the wonderful basket that was Velma lol.
I used to pirate more, but they do need SOME money so I often have subscriptions and then give out the login info to as many people as I trust. That's why Netflix is going from $20+ dollars a month to $0 soon. The others will most likely stay. 🤷♂
or just stop watching all together, same goes for video games, programs and whatever else they try to milk, most of us simply quit it all and moved on with our lives, I suggest you do the same ... there are millions of other things to in life then be a vegetable and pay for vaporwave
I canceled **all** my paid streaming subscriptions a couple of years ago. If it's not on a free streaming service, you're probably not going to see it at my house. Half of the money I save goes towards buying DVDs and BluRays of shows and movies I like, that I then rip to my local network to watch on the TV.
I know a guy called Tim who used to do that with VHS tapes. He thought he had outsmarted us all with entire libraries of TV shows and movies he paid handsomely to build. Don't be a Tim.

This is the natural conclusion of "if it's important to you, have a copy you control" and "without paying customers this all goes away". It's pretty alarming that physical media distribution of home video is getting pulled from stores just as people are starting to rebel against the enshittification of the streaming that supposedly killed physical media.
I'm not sure about these arguments sometimes. Like, physical things will be taken away from you by nature eventually. If I had an important file to me, where will u put it? In a box, or in online storage where the are backup servers and redundancies? I would do the second one. Now with Netflix and the internet in general, it will certainly last longer online than in your physical anything. I get that it is annoying that the content changes platforms regularly, but I often thing we just conflate "the old way" as being "the only way". Like TH-cam is a great service with a ton of educational content (I have learnt so much math and coding and computer science from it) but it was once free and as soon as they want money for it people go "no this thing must be free, it's my RIGHT to get this thing for free cause it was one free and I feel like I own this thing" but you don't. It was a privilege to get it for free for so long, not your birth right
Yep. And this is why I just dumped all my streaming services. I noticed I rarely watched any TV anymore, I kept them around so my adult children could watch them through my subscription but when the companies cracked down on that, I simply canceled them at that point. Why have a service you rarely use and can't be used by someone else? Saving about $300 a year and I'm happy with that.

I don't know but when you have a C-suite earning millions they don't understand that people don't want to or can't pay 100 dollars to watch all the shows they want to watch.
I expect that piracy will see a major resurgence soon and all the companies will be crying not knowing how the public can be so mean to them.
One thing the music industry understands at least is that you can have several services but they need to have all content.
I wish it was as easy as it is in music but I imagine it is a lot more complicated. When an artist releases music, they choose what platforms to release to and they don’t work out some license deal for that. With video streaming, the service pays a lot for the licenses to stream shows and movies. Spotify doesn’t pay to get artists’ music, they just pay (measly) royalties for streams that occur
@@FergiesHuman not really music is also highly consolidated. Sony and Universal own a large percentage of popular music. They could have gone the route of TV and just have Sony+ and universal music max or whatever.

I called it when this shift first started. When it was one or two BIG streaming services with shows from multiple studios it was a good deal and made sense. But now since every single studio/producer/channel has their OWN streaming service, and their content is only available on their service, it's just as expensive as cable to get all your favorite shows. Its always going to go in this cycle unfortunately.

It doesn't have to go in this circle, look at spotify, they were able to make a deal and everything is on one platform. But owners of video content for some reason don't want to make any deals, they are acting like little kids and then they are surprised that number of subscribers is not growing anymore, you just need more and more streaming services to watch everything you want to watch and at some point, you will have to realize that it's a nonsense and piracy will win again.

Creators are now moving towards a patron only business model. Social media is fu**kd.
The new trend slowly gaining popularity is that creators use their copyright to target social platforms instead of regular people.
If social media, like TH-cam permits engagements on their content then the platform would have violated copyright. All kinds of engagements are reserved for patron only platforms.
This means these big tech platforms will have to remove user engagements feature from their site for most content.
Lets see how these tech tycoons like copyright now 😂.
In the old days, with DVR, I was spending over 120 in my area for cable. And now we can pick and choose what ones we like, skip months, all shows are playable when I want them/no waiting, and no commercials (I won't go back to commercials). And all still cheaper than that. I remember when everyone complained and wanted it this way. It really is a good thing.
It’s crazy to me that piracy is higher quality and more flexible than a service you PAY FOR. You’d expect the best service you’ve ever had but here we are.
That sums up ESPN+. It is genuinely harder to access the content I'm paying monthly for than it is to view it on a streaming site pirating it. ESPN is so laggy inconsistent and often times I have to refresh / login again to access the game I want to watch otherwise I'm just clicking the play button repeatedly until it starts playing. Absolute joke.

I pay for Disney Plus, but they can't even get the Audio right, I paid for surround sound so I should get it. Everyone else can do it, Netflix, Prime, Stan, ect... But Disney? Nah they mess it up and it's always so quiet.
It's literally easier to just pirate the Disney Plus episode than try to work with that jankyness. I might as well just cancel the service since it doesn't even work properly.
@@UltimateGattaisee, with Netflix though, the most you get is 5.1 surround, unless you pay for the top tier plan. AppleTV and Prime will give you Atmos if the native content supports it
Funny... I'm in the grey area, I pay towards Disney & Amazon prime (video/delivery) and pirate content I can't gain access too and I agree with yo OP (pirated content delivers high quality movies and TV shows/series) better than Disney, Amazon, netflix, Hulu etc.
It's extremely frustrating. The whole idea behind "cord cutting" was so that you didn't have to pay for the channels you didn't watch. TH-cam TV when it first came out was $35/mo. It's now $75/mo with a lot of added channels/services that' I've never watched a single time. It's exactly back into where cable was years ago and is becoming the new "cord" that may need to be cut.
Which is why people are switching to on demand and FAST only instead of live paid bundles.
Have we really cut the cord tho? We still need cable to connect to the internet... We just trade one cord to another!
the only reason I still have an audible subscription is that I pick only the audiobooks I want and they don't add on extra fees or things I didn't ask for, and so far nothing I've listened to has disappeared out of my library. It probably will one day since it happened to kindle customers, but options for physical media or freebies on the high seas are still easy to come by.

Also, Netflix's active pursue of blocking their own paying customers and georestrict them as much as possible, reinventing the way to check only to make it harder for their own paying customers to watch content available in the platform is one of the most self-hurting activities I've ever seen.
When people were complaining about cable 10+ years ago and heading to the "new" Prime or Netflix, I predicted this exact same thing. Individual apps would start bundling due to people picking and choosing (or doing what I do and rotating subscriptions)... to get all of the channels cable offered, you'd have to choose between a more expensive solution or live with fewer channels... The only benefit is the 'on demand', which is admittedly a huge benefit.
Netflix canceling Inside Job mid production of season 2 was the final straw for me. I’ll dock the boat again if they can ever figure this shit out. Until then, I’m sailing. 🏴☠️

This is my problem with a streaming service’s original content. Unless it’s a self-contained movie or miniseries with no sequel hooks whatsoever, it’s hard to get invested, because you don’t know if it’ll get a sequel or another season.
It’s so bad it’s making me miss the old days when you followed a show for so long and then the network gives you the middle finger by way of a lousy finale.
I spend $30 a year on Netflix. When there are multiple seasons of something I want to watch, I buy a $30 Netflix card and binge watch. They NEVER EVER have my checking account number.
And here is why I still buy DVDs when I really want to watch something.
Endless numbers of rewatches, no ads and no one to take the content offline bc it already is.

There are so many advantages to this! Its for example also faster to pull up a movie on dvd compared to starting the "smart" tv and then prime inside of my tv.
But i disagree on the ads part, some dvds have unskippable preroll ads and i have no clue how they can be unskippable if they are physical media but i guess my dvd player plays along with that bs.
@@fabianletsch1354 yeah. That is something I forgot about until I got back to Blu Rays just this month. What I do is that I just put the Blu Ray in and let it run while I set up other things or scroll on my phone or something. Plus, I found out that typically it's the first title like the Disney Castle or Paramount that is unstoppable. Everything after that initial company intro is completely skippable, though it won't always let you get to the menu immediately. Just skip and skip
@@fabianletsch1354 DVDs and Blurays are definteily way better than streaming shows. As for the pre-ads on the discs, I find that 99% of the time you can skip them in like 3 seconds by advancing the chapters.

The Netflix prices cited are inaccurate. Netflix streaming wasn't $9 in 2007. It was $8 in 2011. It was $9 in 2014.
Great video... need a part 2 about the tech cost increases associated with Streaming bandwidth costs, Storage in multiple data centers, network cross linking link upgrades, and the tech of logging into some services is easy as a QR code, and services like Hulu it's like pulling teeth to remember and type your password into every device. At this point I think we have 12 streaming devices in the house, so re-logging in is a pain.
It's frustrating to see streaming services become more and more like cable, with rising prices and limited content. I miss the days when Netflix was a game-changer.

I got 4k HDR Netflix for $14 a month when I got my first 4k TV and was able to share the account since I cant watch 4 streams on my own. Now to do that is $30. Inflation cant explain that kind of jump, but greed can. The most expensive movies on Netflix that bring in almost no viewers is killing their costs and its why all the really good shows that take time to find an audience get cancelled in season 1.
I got fed up with streaming services producing a shows that have just one or two seasons then cancelling it and leaving me hanging.I’d invested my time in those shows. It would be like buying a book with the last two chapters missing and not knowing that until read the book and find the last pages blank. You wouldn’t buy the book. So now any new shows I don’t bother watching no matter how good they appear to be until I know that all the seasons have been produced to finish the story. The other problem is the licensing of shows where I get a few seasons in then bang it’s gone, because the streaming service has lost the licence. Or like prime have seasons 1 to 4 available as part of prime membership but put season 5 onwards under a paywall.

supporting 4K was a loss, but a minor loss when only select content was 4K, and only a small percentage of users adopted it. supporting that same loss at scale isn't feasible. Although it's hard to say how much netflix would be losing since they still make money hand over fist, it's probably better to say their profit margin would be thinner...
Think, that without Pirate Bay we still been stuck with cable TV in the old form, things like Netflix came as a response to file sharing (not piracy) of pirated movies (piracy), the guys at the Bay pointed out that if companies gave folk what they want for a good prize folk tend to go for what is legal and put them in less risk, that worked... a short time, now Netflix and so start to act like old companies and once more is "The Way of the Pirates" more luring to regular users.

Really great video. Recently I went back to blu-rays specifically because of how much of a shitshow streaming services are, and I'm really loving the experience.
Don't know if this would interest you, but something cool you can do with the right computer is host those blu-ray movies on a server after ripping them. Plex (but they have some controversy, Jellyfin, Emby, Kodi with plex, etc. it's called a Home server, and they offer apps on iOS, Android, consoles, smart TVs, etc. so you can watch the movies you own anywhere.

That's really the best way if you care about picture clarity. All streaming services compress video in some way. Plus you actually OWN the movie.

Well duh... that's why I wrote what I wrote.
Try this experiment! If you have a Blu-ray player OR a computer that will play Blu-rays: Start the Bluray of a film you like, THEN find it on streaming. Switch back and forth. You will quickly see that most of the streaming services LOOK LIKE CRAP compared to the Blu-ray, and the bigger your TV the bigger the fidelity gap is between the two!!
Its cause the bitrate in many streaming services is garbage. The resolution might be 1080p or even 4k but the bitrate is too low
When I decided that I am earning enough that I can afford paying for movies, bought netflix.
It felt as if I switched back from 1080p MKV to RMVB.
I cancelled 1 week later and jumped back into the ocean.
They lowered the bitrate to cope with increased demand during COVID lockdown and I don't think they ever raised it back up again.
i have dowloaded movies that look better, streaming uses a much higher compresion than a Blu Ray Player and if you can download one (they are in short supply) there is no compresion at all when you play it back on the PC.
i did not know any of this but i have a decent pair of eyes and it was very clear to me, then i found out why.
Hardly surprising when you look at the bitrates involved: 1080p video on TH-cam uses 2Mbit/s bitrate. BD will do up to 48Mbit/s.
This is why I honestly still prefer to get physical copies. True Lies, for example, popped up on like 3 different streaming services due to various licensing issues. For the longest time the only source of the video I had was the original DVD release of the movie (which arguably the quality is worse than VHS) Now it's back on Amazon Video where I get to pay $19.99 for a digital license to watch this video so long as Amazon holds the rights to stream it...I'd rather pay $20+ for a physical copy so I can enjoy it for however long I possess it.

I think pushing people toward the ad supported tiers while making the other ones far more expensive was extremely predictable. It was only a matter of time before all streaming services went back to the most obvious and easy money which is doubling down and getting money from the customer and money from advertisers. We were all the fools for thinking we were past that silly us forgot we live in a capitalist society.

This is why I have a Plex server with 200 movies and shows on Blu-ray. I pay once - own forever. Plus, since I'm not a parent yet I can "bulk up" my library for when I do have kids they don't feel extremely left out.
However, I do know they're gonna ask "Why don't we have Netflix?" and "Dad, my friend said to checkout this show but it isn't on Blu-ray yet!"

that can be a reason to go visit a friend's house. my parents didn't fall for a lot of my childhood FOMO, but I still had plenty to keep myself entertained without being stuck with old, outdated stuff either.

I have 2 issues with streaming that make it so I will probably never go back to paying for services.
1. Inconsistent libraries. This is not an issue that streaming can solve, but as a paying customer, I don't care. I don't want to have to tell my child the show they have been watching got geolocked because of copyright.
2. You can't download shows. I understand why, but imagine if steam only let you play your games online. There would be a lot more piracy in the PC games space.

I love Plex and Jellyfin. I don't watch sports or awards shows so there's no time-sensitive content I'm missing, I don't have to deal with forced video quality limitations, I can have as many screens going as I want, I don't have ads, I don't have to "check in" at a home location regularly, and I can view what I want wherever I am in the world without fear of it suddenly disappearing. At $42 a month for streaming services, that's $504 in a year. You can build a server for a good bit less than that and it's paid for itself in under a year.
I think people would be shocked at the video quality of just connecting an antenna for old school HD TV and it's free

I mean there's always the free ad supported streaming services like Pluto TV & Tubi. Pluto is owned by Paramount and tubi is owned by Fox.

With cable you also have to pay to "rent" the equipment and pay insurance if you want service when something breaks. This reason and 2 year contracts is why I will never go back to cable TV. My wireless company gives me Netflix as a perk, I pay for Paramount+ and Max. Wont have Disney+ again
One of the main competitions of soccer here in Brazil is broadcast in Prime video, the Brazil's cup (between clubs) also some games of NBA is broadcast in Prime.

Certain services refusing to function with VPNs is icing on the cake.
If you're talking about circumventing geo-fencing - they sort of have to be seen to be combatting it somehow. They don't have the rights to show a US customer something that they only have rights to in foreign markets, for example.

Password sharing I get, but circumventing geo-blocking still requires you to pay for Netflix so why should anyone involved care about how the end user consumes the content as long as it doesn't negatively impact other users experience? Netflix get paid, the people involved with the creation of the show get paid and the customer gets to watch the thing. Who is losing what? Nobody has ever explained that in a way that's like "ohhhhh, yeah i can see why that's an issue". There's always a "yeah, but why do they care" aspect to the explanations. Geo-blocking for payment I understand, regional pricing is important but easily abused. Actually enforcing region locking your content does not make sense other than "politics", which just means somewhere some people couldn't agree on something that probably has no significance all because the people in charge of these deals think they are the most important person in the room. If you think ego is not a factor in these deals, you clearly have not been around any of these people for any significant amount of time.
I think this is yet another case of big companies thinking something irrelevant is why they're not making as much money as they could. You converted pirates to paying customers just to push them back to piracy. Bravo streaming service, bravo. You recreated the very problem that you almost solved because of what exactly?

@@Giliverwell yeah it's cheaper to pay to show it in one places than all places. It's always been that way. I can buy the same DVD from two different countries and its by a different distributor. Even VHS was like that. If my company only cares about the US market I am not going to pay extra to show it anywhere else. Even radio was like that. There are even videogames like that. I would have to realistically set up extra servers and staff overseas to make the streaming good there too. We would probably have to get every country to agree on consumer rights for this to ever go away.

There really is no perfect solution to content consumption. Movies and TV are very expensive if you pay and well not every movie or TV show is pirated, and you have the added concern that if you do pirate you might get your door knocked down. 😂

I'm not sure about all of you, but my local library can get dvds and bluray of almost any movie or TV show that I could ask for. Music CD's and disk games for major consoles too. All for free. Just saying.

live sports was the big issue with getting my parents to cut the cord. Sure they get the local news same as always, but suddenly when it's a football or baseball game, they don't know what region this device is in and can't stream the game to it without a separate subscription

At least some of these (like Disney) are easy to avoid. Others are kind of hit and miss. I'll sometimes visit a friend's house to watch a show that's on a service that they have and I don't and vice versa. More and more lately I'm just giving up on some of these entirely and doing something else like watching TH-cam videos. As for cable I haven't had that since 2009. I don't miss it at all
Yup. Cable is nothing more than 24-hour marathons of one show punctuated by 10-minute commercial breaks. What made cable cool (niche channels with curated content and no commercials) is gone and will never come back.

Yep, the vast majority of content across the spectrum is literally either movies, reruns or some other syndicated crap/reality TV.
You can get 99.9% of the content out there for free and it's better because you don't have to wade through hours on hours of ads and the quality is literally perfect. I think somebody explained it perfectly, back in 2008 during that writers strike is when both cable and network TV became heavily dependent on reality TV and it's never really changed only gotten worse.
All the channels that had all the good content have completely leaned into the absolute lowest common denominator crap. And yeah it's not ever coming back.

I could’ve swore Netflix streaming first came out in 2008, but I guess I thought that because that’s when it first came to the Xbox 360, which is how I used it on my new 36” 1080i (720p) “flat screen” TV in college, which was still pretty rare in 2008, especially for college students. NETFLIX AND CHILL BABY! We were breaking new ground. I’m not joking either, kids nowadays wouldn’t understand. For poor college students, being able to watch movies for free on an HDTV was comparable to going to a theater and this magical experience. It was also a status symbol. I had to work my ass off that summer to buy that TV. And as a student it saved a lot of money if someone invited you over. I lived right off campus and I would invite women in my apartment complex and on my shuttle route all the time after class in the evening. A lot of times (>90%) it was just friendly, but you know how women be sometimes if they’re having a good time and become comfortable. An HDTV with Netflix was the best wingman I ever had in college, and I was just an average looking kinda nerdy guy going to school for web design and development. Never really realized until now how much I owe to that app!

Netflix was amazing when it got better (before it was limited since you needed to rent a DVD: since not all movies and shows was on their service), when so many companies paid Netflix for their movies and shows on it.. this lasted what? Less than 2 years? And then then said, "WHOA! I can make my own streaming service..."
The point about inflation is sound but consider wages. If the median wage hasn't grown at the same rate as the average inflation then inflation is moot.
At the end of the day, a majority of Netflix's customer base are people who has to sacrifice somewhere in order to pay for Netflix

The problem I had was that Netflix increased their price 3 times (or might have been 4) within just a few years. And then they got critical about sharing, even though we were paying for the 4 screen plan. So we finally took a break from them. But I do like their content.

Their price more or less increased only with inflation. Unfortunate but that happens when your revenue stagnates or even falls during high inflation times.
@@1337Jogi Yes, I watched it. Regardless, if they had raised their price once as a larger jump that would be fine. But multiple times within a year or two is ridiculous, and it was probably making up for past inflation, but it was certainly rising faster than other costs over that time.

Also the argument that "it's just keeping up with inflation", isn't reasonable to me. It's a reasonable idea, if and only if everyone's paychecks are indexed to inflation, too. Corporate profits should be okay to fluctuate. Infinite growth is ruining everything.
Let's also be aware, Netflix was the ONLY streaming service.. that still offered 480p content.. for almost $11/month. And finally recently removed that service.

Legit, the cable-ification of streaming is why I have decided to just start getting the physical media now. I buy it once, I have it forever, I can share it with friends, if I don’t like it I can sell it on ebay, and in the long run I’m saving money since I only really can watch a few hours of content anyhow.
This subject was very helpful and insightful, times are hard and decisions need to be made, what do you ready need and what you don't need right now.
I have genuinely not used any streaming platform except my self hosted emby server for more than a year now. I have new episodes from all services hours after they release, i have new movies before their blu ray even releases, i have it all in max resolution, everything tailored just how i like it. I can watch it whenever, wherever and whatever i want and that forever. Sure it costs a LOT to buy storage & builda NAS as well as to rent a server so you can access it remotely without grilling your bandwidth, but when you do it with your family or friends you basically pay the same as the other services with the benefit of it being way cheaper per person and as i mentioned you have everything you like forever.
And after a while, once you add up the money saved from all these canceled services you end up way ahead. Consumer equivalent of mounting solar panels on the roof, haha.

I pay ~40 € per 20TB of storage and a small 5 € ARM64 server to run emby - works like a charm with proper caching and some Linux voodoo.
Doing this with the whole family, per Person it is just like one cheap Service instead of before where everyone had three or for Services for themselves.

I wish I could cancel. Over the years I acquired Netflix, Hulu, Disney, hbo max, peacock and prime(already have it for hours much I order from Amazon) and I'm suffering for not being able to watch South Park currently on paramount, but I'm sure I'll get that too eventually just for that...
The reason I keep it is because my mom is disabled, on limited income and home all day with not much to do, watching her shows keeps her somewhat happy. And over the years I've let her use my accounts. The new Netflix shit hurts, not gonna lie.. $27 to have a 2nd location, oof.

The funny thing is there's a ton of people who don't want sports channels and they're willing to pay the current rate not to have them or a slightly reduced rate. Because well there's like 1000 channels just in sports contact that you're never gonna watch 24 seven.
you have no idea. you may find a couple general sports channels in a base subscription, those are teasers. I am sure they are included at low cost. They are designed to entice you to buy the sports addons. football, hockey, soccer, golf, racing, they all have a half dozen or more channels dedicated for each. So for sports watchers it is always more expensive.
Streaming is infinitely better than cable TV. People have used streaming for so long that they don't remember that cable TV has ads and you can't watch a show whenever you want, you have to wait for it to be on TV. However streaming has no ads and you can watch any show at any time.

my vote's for "upgrading to physical," because nothing can beat having the media you're trying to watch in hand. no network latency issues, no chance of it being taken down unless MPAA starts sending enforcement squads after people, none of that. streaming will be for ephemeral flops you didn't want to watch all that badly anyway, physical copies will be for the good stuff in good quality.
cord cutting is all about min/max your money you can afford monthly as you're entertained. Someone complaining that they're paying $70/month for several streaming services.. and think they should just go back to cable is damn ridiculous; and probably just a sales rep trying to sell cable.
Many people uses their library card for physical media, purchase physical media, use 1-2 streaming services a month.. and then next month cancel those streaming services and use different ones.
I would also suspect sooner or later... these streaming services would want to put a stop on cancelling quick. Such as a contract that you can't cancel in x number on months.

So true, it made me go back to my Ship flying black colors. It was too annoying paying a sub for 1 show then leaving that app dead for 1-6 months until something good came up. And looking elsewhere for something to watch. Enough was enough. ISPs bundle 3-5 streaming services with some high speed plans and that is Cable TV.

Same here, plex and youtube I am all set. All for less $ than a case of beer per month.
And these libraries can be switched around whenever these companies want. And we can’t do a thing about it because we don’t own anything. Sure; we pay for it; but we don’t have any control over it.
This is why I still have physical media for my favourite shows.
Also, with every major company buying the smaller companies, therefore narrowing the competition; the increase in corporate concentration will drive prices through the roof one small increase at a time.
All while using the cover word, inflation, to protect their asses and wallets.
You're forgetting one thing--though, perhaps you never had cable...? The prime distinguishing factor between the two is that with cable there was usually a contract involved--you were stuck with them for a term. Mind you, there could be reduction in packages...but, you were in their clutches for the duration.
With streaming, you can turn things on-and-off at-will and never be beholden to anyone in that way. Even if proportional cost of all the services are starting to approach those special cable channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime) back in the day, you can still turn ALL of it off whenever you want. No strings.
Between that and a la carte in Vudu and Amazon video, I'm a pretty freaking happy camper.
By the time you pay for your internet and maybe 2-3 streaming services, it pushes to the price point of cable.
I rotate my subscriptions. I keep it to between roughly 2-3 services at a time. As long as there isn’t a contract - like good ol cable - I’m good to go and always have something new. to check out.
I have a strong feeling streaming services will require contracts to subscribe eventually. Then we will have come full circle and be back to straight up cable 😂
Just buy Blu-ray copies of the things you want to see. They can't take it away from you and really, unlike music where it's 3-4 minutes between changing tracks, getting up every 2 to 3 hours to change a disc isn't really an inconvenience.
I don’t know anyone who owns physical music who switches tracks every song lol! I think most people buying CDs and LPs are listening to full albums, so 3-4 minutes should be 30-40 minutes. But I agree with you, blu ray is great, and so important

Yeah, if I'm listening to a CD, it's because I want an album to play through. If I want to hear a specific song, I play a FLAC rip off of my phone.

I've been getting more into physical media, or rather local digital files of my legitimate copies of media. Building a NAS in a month or two with my tax refund since I'm running out of space.
Gonna pay off in the long run. I'm less worried about the cost of subscription services, and more about media preservation. I had one childhood online youtube series get purged when Google Video died, lost the files, and I am NEVER going through that again, especially not to a streaming service trying to avoid taxes.

Yeah, but Steam has it's own issues like the inconsistent banning of games. You can't get Dungeon Travellers 2 or 2.2,but you can get the first one? Assuming they don't ban the first one later down the track before it releases.

I did the same. I watched Prime Video less and less, because their newly produced originals never met my (mostly low) expectations. It reminded me of the cheap productions every average tv channel offers. I switched to buy blu ray and dvd again when there are special offers or discounts. At the moment i haven't subscribed to any video streaming. I don't miss much, i have some movies and tv shows i like already on bought discs, but most days i don't watch tv anyways.

OK....Not sure where your numbers came from, but...... My cost for Netflix is $24.99, Hulu bundle $24.99, Apple+ $9.99, Amazon is $14.99. The Apple stuff is broken up, so I'm not entirely sure of the exact cost as I type this. Add Spotify and Audible at $16.99 and $16.00 respectively, and you have a "cable bundle". Now, add the fiber internet to carry this cornucopia, and we're back to cable TV, which is what I believe they intended, all along. YOIKS!
